Great-Scapes!Saturdays: September 24, October 1, 8; 10-11:30 amYoung artists will create pictures of mountain ranges, crashing oceans, and bustling cities. We’ll visit great works depicting landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes for inspiration before using paint, pastels, and more to create great-scapes of our own. Instructor: Carey Hernandez

Make ‘em Laugh!Saturdays: October 15, 22, 29; 10-11:30 amIllustrator David Shannon creates funny pictures to tell stories that make us laugh. We’ll look at original artworks from several of his books, then create goofy characters and hilarious self-portraits. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson

Comics: Beyond the FrameSaturdays: September 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8; 10 am-noonJoslyn Members: $60; General Public: $70 Many of the artworks in the galleries only show us a snapshot of a story. In this class we will look at some of the Museum’s favorite artworks and ask ourselves what happens next. In the studio we’ll learn to use the skills of a comic book artist to tell our readers what’s happening beyond the frame. Instructor: Fredd Gorham

Canvas Painting: Stencils & StuffSaturdays: September 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8; 1-3 pmJoslyn Members: $60; General Public: $70 Learn to combine funky painting techniques like

stenciling, printmaking, and spray paint to create a finished canvas painting full of fun shapes

and color. Instructor: Dan Crane

Clay: 2D to 3D Saturdays: October 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19; 10 am-noonJoslyn Members: $60; General Public: $70Transform a flat painting into a three-dimensional work of sculpture while learning basic clay techniques. Each student will choose a favorite painting from the galleries then pinch, model, and form clay to show us what it would look like if we stepped inside. Instructor: Andy Smith

Drawing: People & PerspectivesSaturdays: October 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19; 1-3 pmJoslyn Members: $60; General Public: $70Take your drawing skills to the next level in this class that will use examples in the galleries to guide us to accurately render what we see. Short exercises and extended studies will teach us to better understand facial proportion and architectural angles. Instructor: To be determined

Figure SculptureSaturdays: December 3, 10, 17; 10 am-noonJoslyn Members: $50; General Public: $60Pop artist George Segal will provide the inspiration for this class that will teach students to make lifelike works of sculpture using plaster gauze. We’ll learn how to keep our sculptures from falling over by building supportive armatures that allow each figure to stand, sit, or move with life. Instructor: Pamela Conyers Hinson

Watercolor(A) Fridays: September 16, 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21 (B) Fridays: November 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9, 1610 am-12:30 pmJoslyn Members: $105; General Public: $115 Explore basic watercolor painting as you work from photographic observation. Learn how to mix and overlay colors, create transparent washes, and practice a variety of brush techniques. Experienced students will enjoy working in the studio with a knowledgeable instructor as a resource for questions or critique.

Getting Started with Digital PhotographySundays: September 25, October 2, 9; 1-3 pmJoslyn Members: $40; General Public $50Learn the ins-and-outs of digital photography and how to make the most of your camera’s settings and functions. Students will spend time in the studios and in the Museum’s public spaces to take pictures and explore the photographic possibilities. Students need to bring a camera.Instructor: Jim Ferguson

Life DrawingThursdays: October 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $100; General Public $110Better understand the basics of anatomy and body structure through a series of drawing studies. Draw from nude models, using a variety of materials and figure-based exercises, to gain confidence creating mass and accurate proportion. Written parental permission required for students under age 18. Instructor: Ron Sykes

Acrylic Painting: Stylized FiguresThursdays: October 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $120; General Public $130Artist Hayv Kahraman arranges her flattened, stylized figures to create thoughtful compositions with carefully balanced space. This class will encourage students to experiment with style and abstraction while working with a clothed model to compose acrylic paintings on smooth wood panels similar to those we will see in a special exhibition. Oil Painting: From Photo to PaintSaturdays: October 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19; 1-3:30 pm Joslyn Members: $120; General Public $130The process of interpreting a photographic image in paint can be an intimidating challenge. Learn image transfer techniques and strengthen your compositional awareness as we transfer images from an exhibition of photos by Andrew Moore to canvases in order to create finished oil paintings. (Students may also work from personal photographs.) Instructor: Katrina Swanson

Photography Road Trip: The 96th Meridian Sunday: October 23; 12:30-5 pmJoslyn Members: $90; General Public $100Photographer Andrew Moore traveled the 100th meridian to capture the landscapes, homesteads, towns, and people of the Nebraska panhandle, Dakotas, and beyond. After seeing Moore’s photographs, our journey will take us North along the 96th meridian, through the neighborhood of Florence and along Highway 75, to document people, architecture, and landscapes as we pass through Fort Calhoun, Herman, and Decatur, Nebraska. Chartered transportation will be provided. Students need to bring a camera.Instructor: Jim Ferguson

Life Drawing: The Draped FigureThursdays: December 1, 8, 15; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $70; General Public $80This life drawing class will focus on the interplay of fabrics and the human body. Models draped in fabrics will challenge students to capture the mass and form of the dressed figure.Instructor: Ron Sykes

Watercolor: A Crash CourseThursdays: December 1, 8, 15; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $70; General Public $80Dive into the depths of watercolor painting in this short series that will present basic watercolor techniques and offer time for experimentation and practice. Students will learn to stretch and prepare watercolor paper, how to mix and overlay colors, and a variety of paint applications. Instructor: Matt Jones

Plaster SculptureSaturdays: December 3, 10, 17; 1-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $70; General Public $80Construct an armature or cast a found object to create a plaster gauze sculpture in the spirit of Joslyn’s George Segal installation, which presents everyday objects and observations in a way that forces us to reconsider how we see the world. Cut & PasteSaturdays: November 5, 12, 19; 10-11:30 amCreate a mixed media collage that combines elements from artworks we find throughout the Museum. We’ll “copy and paste” bits and pieces from artists like Dale Chihuly and Claude Monet and mix it all together on a canvas by drawing, painting, and pasting. Instructor: Carey Hernandez

Printing PatternsSaturdays: December 3, 10, 17; 10-11:30 amIn this class we will learn to create printing plates and stamps to make lots of art with pattern. We’ll print patterned shapes to produce fancy clothing for figure drawings and even print on t-shirts to make clothing we can wear. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson
