PRODUCTION OF WORKING DRAWINGS
I. VIEW SELECTION
A. Top D. Left Side
B. Front E. RearC. Right Side F. Bottom
1. Materials 1/8" or less require only one view
2. Cylinders, Cones, Spheres require two views3. All other objects require at least three views
II. ADDITIONAL VIEW SELECTION
A. Primary Auxiliary ViewsB. Secondary Auxiliary Views
1. Views not considered one of the primary six views
2. Angular cut surfaces on objects require a primary auxiliary view
3. Compound angles (cut in two angles) require a secondary auxiliary
III. SECTIONAL VIEW SELECTION
A. Full D. RevolvedB. Half or Quarter E. RemovedC. Broken Out F. Offset
1. Used to clarify confusing hidden lines2. Shows internal parts of objects by turning hidden lines (that have been cut) into
view lines
3. One view will show the cutting plane line (where object is cut)4. One view is shown normally
5.
One view shows how the object looks after cutting (interior materials is sectioned)(Section l lines represent type of interior materials)
6. Full means to cut object totally in half

IV. DEVELOPMENT OR INTERSECTION SELECTION
A. Parallel LineB. Radial Line
1.
A layout is a flat sheet of material to be folded up to create a 3-dimensional object2. Objects that have 90-degree corners require parallel line developments3.
Objects that are cones, pyramids, or other geometrical shaped objects are
developed from a point in a circular pattern
V. DIMENSIONING SYSTEM SELECTION
A. Unidirectional
B. AlignedC. Arrowhead style
1. In unidirectional system all numbers read from the bottom of the paper (written in
a normal position)
2. In aligned system numbers are read from the bottom and right side of the drawing(numbers are written perpendicular to dimension lines)
3. Aligned system used on extremely large drawings4. Arrowhead styles include open arrowhead, closed arrowheads, dots, and diagonal
lines (slanting to the right) or no arrowhead at all
VI. SELECTION OF PICTORIAL REPRESENTATION
A. Isometric
B. Oblique
C. Perspective1. Isometric - Sides drawn at 30 degrees to right and left of vertical
2.
Oblique - Sides drawn at 45 degrees to right of front view3. Cavalier - All measurements in full scale
4. Cabinet - All measurements in full scale except width which is in half scale

HOW TO MAKE A THREE VIEW MECHANICAL
DRAWING
You have learned to draw the FRONT, TOP and RIGHT SIDE VIEWS of an object. To make aThree view Mechanical Drawing you must learn how to place these views on your paper incorrect relation to each other. To help you understand how to do this , the Orthographic
Projection Paper shown in Figure 1 is used.
How to Use Orthographic Projection
Paper
1. Draw theFront View of the object
pictured in Figure 2 in theFrontViewarea of the paper (See A in
Figure 1) . Note the heavy corner
shown in the front of the picturedobject is the same corner as the
heavy corner on the paper.
2. Draw the Top View of the object
pictured in figure 2 in the Top Viewarea of the paper (See B in Figure
1) . Note the heavy corner shownin the top of the pictured object is the
same corner as the heavy
corner on the paper.
3.
Draw theRight SideView of the
object pictured in figure 2 in the
Right SideView area of the paper( i i ) h hi

Basic Rules for Dimensioning
1. Place the dimensions between views where possible.
2. Place the dimension line for the shortest lengthnearest the outline of the object. Parallel
dimension lines are placed in order of their size,
making the longest dimension line the outermost.
3. Place the dimensions on the view that mostcompletely shows the characteristic contour of the
object. Note that in figure (C) this practice cannot becompletely followed. The width dimensions must go
below the rightside view, where that part of the shape is
shown best.
4. Place dimensions in line where space permits.
