What can be done about a street thathad a name that now doesn’t haveone? This is not a small, insignificantconnecting Street, it is a majorconnecting Highway that has beende-named, now waiting for a new one!The Old Bunbury Road, betweenLake Clifton and North Coolup, 26.5km suffered major surgery when thenew Forrest Highway, sliced it in half, ending up with two Old BunburyRoads, creating havoc amongstfrustrated tourists, delivery persons,Emergency Services and the PostalService. The Waroona Shire recentlyran a competition to re name the roadbetween the Forrest Highway andLake Clifton 5.3 Km, using only thefour names suggested by the Shire. The LOCAL choice is Lake CliftonRoad. (not on offer by the Shire).Proposal 1 KULARDA Road -Peppermint TreeProposal 2 WONNIL Road - RiverSwamp GumProposal 3 THROMBOLITE Road -Ancient Rock FormationsProposal 4 No changeNo announcement has been made butfor my two bob’s worth:Old BunburyRoad- West, just about nails it! TheOld Bunbury Road was the originaltrack between Perth and Bunbury, known then as just the Bunbury Road,
long before the South West Highway(1890 when the railway came) and theOld Coast Road. The rest area, atPeppermint Grove, was establishedbefore the 1870's when building ofhostel/lodgings/change rooms andbathhouse (added later for the'executive' traveller) were firstestablished by John Foreacre(Foreacre Street), the foundationstoday can still be seen at the highwayend of Peppermint Grove Road. Thisarea was the Horse Team change forthe Stagecoach, Cobb & Co., whooperated the Southwest service onbehalf of the WA Government. Theservice was unreliable as coacheswould typically wait at Perth or Bunburyuntil they were full or had passengers(which would sometimes take severalhours) and then depart. A team of tiredhorses pulled an English-built coachwhich was designed for short trips oncobbled roads, bumped and jolted itsway over bush tracks. In bad weather, services stopped altogether becausetracks were so overused and boggymaking them impassable. During winterit was not uncommon for horses tostand up to their bellies, or coaches upto their axles, in wet sand. The hardlimestone around Peppermint Grovearea, was a welcome relief for teams toeasily stop and start.

News From Father Jay
Welcoming new people into ourparish community is part of ourCatholic tradition. What is RCIA? TheRite of Christian Initiation of Adults(RCIA) is a process in whichinterested adults gradually becomemembers of the Roman CatholicChurch. Becoming a Catholic is a bigstep. It is literally a life changingexperience and one which should notbe entered into lightly. There areseveral stages and ritual steps in theRCIA process. As a formal time ofenquiry is set up in our parish, it willprovide opportunities for enquirers toquestion and explore many differentaspects of the Catholic faith.Toregister for the Enquiry SessionTuesday August 5th 10:00 – 11:30amplease ring Fr Jay 9733 1225 or Del9733 1201. 2015/16 FUNDING ROUND
The Dept of Sport and Recreation (DSR) are seeking applications from incorporated, not for profit community groups for financial support through the CSRFF.Through the CSRFF funding program, the State Government provides financialassistance to community groups and local governments to develop basic, sustainableinfrastructure for sport and recreation. WAY OF LIFEThe Apostle Paul
wrote somewonderful wordsto a Church in
Rome many yearsago and told them“therefore, beingmade right with
God by faith, we have peace withGod through our Lord Jesus.”What a privilege to have such peacethrough faith, which is a total trust inChrist. If we trust Him we not onlyhave “peace with God,” but also wecan experience the “peace of God”which shall “keep your hearts andminds through Christ Jesus.” Yes,He is able to care for us as we liveour life and look to Him in everysituation. He does this because, as the Apostlewent on to write,“the God of Peaceshall be with you.”May we echo someof the words of thehymn writer whichsay; ‘only trustHim,only trust, onlytrust Him now!!
Pastor Phill Brewster.
The Satnav - by Pam Ayres
I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car.A Satnav is a drivers friend, it tells you where you are.
I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life. It’s better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.
It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive.“It’s sixty miles an hour,” it says, “You’re doing sixty five.”
It tells me when to stop and start and when to use the brakeAnd tells me when it’s never ever safe to overtake.
It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green. It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front and all those to the rearAnd taking this into account, it specifies my gear.I’m sure no other driver has so helpful a device.
For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives it’s advice. It fills me up with counseling, each journey’s pretty fraught,
So why don’t I exchange it and get a quieter sort?Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I’m properly fed.
It washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed!Despite all these advantages and my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off.

Ifyou have any natural materials thatwould be useful for the playgroundplease let us know. Please talk to Megan LeRoy orCatherine Stone if you can be ofassistance. Thanks!
We are excited to be adding a NaturePlayground to our yard. We haveapplied for an ACTION grant(Alcoan’s Coming Together In OurNeighbourhood) to help pay for thematerials needed and to providesome labour. Fingers crossed we aresuccessful. Thanks to the Shire ofWaroona for the donation of mulchand for removing our green waste. We will commence preparing thenature play area during the schoolholidays. This will involve digging uplawn and garden beds, removing sometrees, laying mulch, logs and gravel. The help of you/partners/friends/relatives would be much appreciatedon Sun 13th and/or Mon 14th July inorder to get the preparation work
Dear EditorSo the Waroona Shire has decidedthere will be no green waste or vergepick-up this year. Over the years theyhave decreased the number of tippasses and I am now waiting to seewhat, if anything, they will do forSenior Citizens, because at themoment they do nothing. They arequick to raise the rates though. I amdisgusted and disappointed and I amsure I am not the only one.Carole Mason
Letters to the EditorDear MikeI must congratulate you on the recentissues of the Drakesbrook Despatch. This is what I visioned many yearsago as Waroona’s own newspaper, when a group of us talked about it.Keep it up!I am in Pinjarra Palliative Hospitalbeing well looked after until such timeas either I improve or otherwise till theend.Yours SincerelyDorothy Pitman
Dear MikeI noticed that the Shire Councilminutes have not appeared in theDespatch. Some people, probably asmall minority are interested inCouncil affairs. I recently spoke to aCouncil officer and he stated that wealways picked up the minutes at theoffice and that the Council minutesare also on-line.People need to know how the Councilis running the Shire. Some items mayaffect a lot of people.Thank you, Alan Calhoun
Editorial CommentItwas extremely pleasing to receive the letter from Dorothy. The fact that she took the time to writeto me whilst in Palliative Care means a lot to me. Dorothy is one of the original CommitteeMembers of the Waroona Community Newsletter and until recently when she was taken ill, was anactive member of the Drakesbrook Despatch. We all wish her well.Receiving the letter from Carol Mason has made me think a great deal about the implications ofthe Shire’s decision to cancel the verge pick ups. Personally I will not be affected, as I have myown Ute and regularly take green waste to the tip and use the 5 free Tip passes I receive from theshire to dispose of my rubbish. (I am told that residents in the Mandurah area have to pay everytime they visit their local tip) Many residents, however, do not have access to a trailer, or Ute andare now going to have a problem disposing of their unwanted goods and rubbish. Perhaps this issomething the Waroona Lions could consider as a project, or even just a group of CommunityMinded Volunteers. Maybe the Despatch could print a list of volunteers who are prepared to calland pick up your unwanted goods and take them to the tip, using your tip pass. This is just anidea. Maybe there are other ideas and suggestions. Let me know what you think and we can getthe ball rolling. If Carol is disappointed and disgusted, I am sure there are many more of you.In answer to Alan’s letter regarding Council minutes, in theory I have no problem with it, but thelength of the minutes would be a concern. We do pay for printing, so several pages of minuteswould not be of interest to many residents. However, should someone email me a copy of theminutes I could always select items that I think would be of interest to the Community. -Mike Whitney- Editor

Winter has well and truly arrived andwe have had some heavy rains in thepast week. The worse problem wasthe gale force winds on Tuesday 17th
June and it took three large innerbricks, a post and four bits of timberand a heavy piece to metal to keep theblue tarp protection in place tosafeguard the chooks. I am stillwaiting patiently for my friend Robert tocomplete my chook shed which isbadly needed, particularly at this timeof the year. It is half completed on hisveranda at present. Patience is a goodvirtue. Consequently I am still puttingin fresh hay every three or four daysdepending on the weather to ensurethe Eccles have warmth and drybedding. They must be content asthey are still laying six or seven eggsdaily and Penny the celebrity WyndotteX D’Uccle is still contributing everysecond day. Thanks to the departureof the wild birds my chooks are eatingmore grain and this is reflected in thequality of production. In the last two
Chooks, Chooks and More Chooksweeks we have closed off the entranceto the Atrium as we discovered asecret nest and five eggs which weredestroyed. Their free range time hasalso been put back to mid-afternoon.Boots, the family cat is still chasing thatelusive mouse and supervising when Iam attending the chooks. Leo theother family cat is too busy catchinglizards and other prey and now walkswith a permanent limp after beingclipped by a car a couple of monthsago. The treatment plan by Ron thelocal vet and staff was first class andmuch appreciated. Prior to the heavyrain I was raking loose hay into four orfive piles and the chooks lovedismantling the hay all over that yardand looking for that elusive treasure. They are better than a plough. Afterthe heavy rain “Wally’s Orchard”especially the new lime trees willcontinue to benefit from the mulchresidue and natural fertiliser. Iattended the Waroona Poultry Showas an observer last Saturday andenjoyed viewing the Poultry and Birdson display. Laurie, Kath and John plusother helpers were kept very busy. AsI am new to the poultry club myservices were not required and Iquickly departed to watch my beloved“Fremantle Dockers” take onRichmond Tigers and finish with a 20
point win to consolidate a spot in thetop six of the AFL.Waroona Poultry Club missed theservices of hardworking SecretaryKellie Derosa for the Poultry Show andlast week Kellie and husband PaulDerosa celebrated the arrival of a son.Congratulations to them and especiallythe proud Grandparents. Chickens aresure to be among the family petsraised by the Derosa Family. I am stillreceiving positive comments regardingthe chook articles and time to attendchookyard daily chores.Ken “Chookyard Farmer”.

A flying pig came on the scene. When he landed all were in awe,
The pig didn’t need a house of straw. The flying pig wanted to date,

Getting nowhere, hill or dale. The other pigs resented he could fly.
They laughed at him and made him cry.Market day soon came around,

Rolling out the newsYet again it has been proved that thebest way to prevent exotic pestspecies becoming established in WAis to spread the word, so that they canbe located and eradicated before theproblem escalates. Following recentmedia attention about an infestation ofwheel cactus found in Dowerin, amember of the public reported asimilar infestation in Yarloop to theDepartment of Agriculture and Food(DAFWA), whose officers quickly
removed it. The cactus has also beenfound in the Shires of Goomalling andKellerberrin thanks to local people.Another example of early detectionbeing crucial to controlling a pest isthe citrus gall wasp, first found in WAlast year. Currently it appears to beconfined to a small area. Vigilantorchardists and backyard growers canassist in preventing the insectexpanding its range, simply byspotting the tell-tale signs and lettingDAFWA know. Report any sightingsof wheel cactus or symptoms of citrusgall wasp presence, described in thismonth’s column, to the Pest andDisease Information Service (PaDIS).Ring Freecall 1800 084 881 or email[email protected]Wheel of misfortuneIn South Australia 35,000 hectares ofthe Flinders Ranges are contaminatedby wheel cactus (Opuntia robusta).Residents of WA’s south-west areurged to keep their eyes open for thisinvader, as it would thrive in thisregion. Birds eating the fruit spread itsseed in their droppings. The bluishgreen segments or ‘pads’, up to 40cm in diameter, are circular,
tree may experience dieback. Thepresence of this insect is indicated bydistinctive woody galls up to 250 mmlong and 25 mm thick on the twigs ofcitrus trees. These galls can containhundreds of larvae. The adultsemerge any time from mid-Septemberto early November. So far DAFWAhas only found a few galls the size ofpeanuts. Owners of citrus treesshould be checking their trees now forevidence of the gall wasp so thatthere is time to carry out controlmethods, if needed, by August toprevent the adults from emerging andbreeding. The movement of younginfested trees is the most frequentway of introducing citrus gall wasp tonew areas. DAFWA’s surveys inareas around the initial infestationsuggest the insect has not spread anyfurther afield. However, the wholemetropolitan area is being surveyed, with attention being given tocommercial and wholesale nurseries, and DAFWA has advised the localcitrus industry of the detection.
If you have a query or want toreport something unfamiliar, ringthe Pest and Disease InformationService (PaDIS) on Freecall 1800084 881 or email[email protected] If sending aspecimen include your contactdetails, where and when you foundthe specimen and any damage youobserved. Post to PaDIS,Department of Agriculture andFood, 3 Baron-Hay Court, SouthPerth WA 6151. You are alsowelcome to bring in specimens inperson. For further information visitwww.agric.wa.gov.au
distinguishing it from the more familiarprickly pear which has teardropshaped pads. It is not hard to imaginehow large infestation of wheel cactuswould interfere with agriculture, theenvironment and social amenity land.An unpleasant bunchMany opuntioid cacti, including pricklypear which is the common name forseveral species ofOpuntia, areWeeds of National Significance. Withsome home gardeners interested ineating cacti fruit it should be pointedout that one species (Opuntia ficus-indica), known as the edible pricklypear or Indian fig, is allowed to begrown south of the 26th Parallel. However, it is not an ideal plant forthe backyard. Its prickles can harmchildren or pets. Also it can host fruitfly and needs to be managedappropriately.Signs of citrus gall waspNative to eastern Australia, the citrusgall wasp (Bruchophagus fellis) is anexotic pest in WA. In 2013 a smalloutbreak was detected at Eden Hill, asuburb north-east of Perth. Citrustrees infested by this gall wasp cansuffer reduced leaf production andlower fruit yield. In severe cases the

Winter is certainly here! As the rainand cold weather settle in over thenext couple of months there are anumber of things you will need tokeep on top of. If you haven’t alreadydone so now is the time to checkdams, water courses, tanks, drains, gutters and roofs. Dams and watercourses can become contaminatedwith faecal matter, debris and evenchemical run off during winter rains.By checking to see if they are allworking correctly, you can minimiseflooding problems when moresignificant rain is received. Also byinspecting for blockages, damage, rust or other problems you can expectto capture all the rain to come withoutincident. Too many times we forgetthat safety should be our number oneconcern. In Australia in 2013 therewere 59 farm deaths reported and17% of these were children. Quadbikes and tractors are the main cause
animals off your property (see SLIS’s‘Biosecurity plans for smalllandholders’ available atagric.wa.gov.au/slis). For thoselandholders interested in learningmore about running a horticultureenterprise, the Small LandholderInformation Service recently launchedThe Horticulture Handbook – areference guide for establishinghorticulture enterprises in WesternAustralia. You can email[email protected] toreceive a free copy or any of theinformation sheets listed on this page. This time of year is also a great timeto incorporate organic manures intoyour soil, as there is less risk of flybreeding in July. If you have anyqueries please email or visit ourFacebook page atfacebook.com/DAFWAsmalllandholders and ask usa question. We would love to hearfrom you! Until next time, Jodie
of fatalities and injuries on farms. Lastyear quad bike related deaths werereported most frequently (15),followed by tractor incidents (9). Takethe time to know how best to handlethese vehicles and make sure youkeep them well maintained (seeSLIS’s ‘Handling ATVs on smallproperties’ available atagric.wa.gov.au/slis). Safety shouldalso be taken seriously when dealingwith livestock. Many small producersor livestock owners are unaware ofthe importance of biosecurity and ifyou run any number of livestock, youneed a biosecurity plan. A biosecurityplan should cover the steps you wouldtake when bringing animals onto yourproperty (e.g. inspection, identification), managing thebiosecurity risks already present onyour property (e.g. monitoringanimals, restricting visitors) and thesteps you would take when moving

Congratulations to Nurse Kellie on the birth of her beautifullittle man Deegan from all of us at Waroona Vets xx
We have seen plenty of dogs latelythat have ingested rat poison. In mostcases this has been accidental with apacket left out or a cupboard door notclosed. Unfortunately it is one of the
most common poisonings we see andwe have seen way too many lately!
Most rat bait products are anti-coagulants. The way they work is tointerfere with the animal’s ability toclot their blood and thereforeeventually cause uncontrolledbleeding and death. Some rat baits are worse than others.1st generation poisons such asWarfarin (Ratblitz) require repeatedingestion or a very large ingestion tocause an issue as they are shortacting. 2nd generation poisons such asBrodifacoum (Tomcat, Talon) usuallyonly require a single ingestion of asmall amount to cause a problem (insome cases as little as a gram) andcause problems for a long time asthey are long acting.Unfortunately unless you have seenyour pet eat the bait there are noinitial signs of toxicity. You will onlystart to see clinical signs of toxicity
Rat Poisoningdown and their elbows pointing out)then your pet needs veterinaryattention immediately.Other symptoms you may see arecoughing/panting (associated withincreased respiratory effort), bleedingfrom nose, eyes or mouth, bruising onthe gums or skin and/or swollen joints. If your pet exhibits any of these signsseek veterinary attention immediately. If badly affected some patients end upon ventilators as they can’t breathe forthemselves and chest drains toremove blood from their lungs. Theseanimals can become gravely ill veryquickly and at this point you may notbe able to save them.So whatever you do – LOCK UPYOUR RAT BAIT. If you have baitsout ensure that it cannot be knockeddown by rodents to end up in reach ofpets. Also beware that in some casesyour pet eating a mouse that haseaten bait is enough to cause toxicity. So if in doubt, get your pet checkedout by your vet.

usually 3-4 days after ingestion. Atthis stage your pet is in imminentdanger of bleeding to death and mayneed emergency intervention andintensive care to pull through. The good news is that if you haveseen your pet eat rat poison we caninduce vomiting and put your pet onthe antidote. The bad news is thatdepending on the type of rat poisonyour pet has eaten this can be twicedaily tablets for as much as 4-6weeks. And the worst news is theantidote can be quite costly for thelarger dogs due to how much of it theyrequire and for how long.If you haven’t seen your pet eat ratpoison the first sign of a problem isusually that the animal will becomelethargic (due to anaemia). Quiteoften the gums will go pale (white)and in the end stages may evenappear blue if your pet is bleeding intotheir chest and struggling to breathe.Bleeding into the chest or abdomen isvery common so if your pet’sabdomen becomes distended or theyseem to take more effort to breathe(usually while standing with their head

Waroona Football Club News by Forward Pocket: Round 11 on Sunday 22nd June 2014promises to be full of interest atMundijong Oval and crucial to theDemons hopes of playing finals in allthree grades for season 2014.ColtsCoach Glen Wilson gave an inspiredspeech at ¾ time and the colts camefrom behind to score an exciting ninepoint win against Halls Head prior tothe League General Bye. RowanGardiner went for a solo run whichresulted in a goal and Kohen Hart-Cole kicked the winning goal in thetime on period. Colts Vice- CaptainJosh Commisso was outstanding allnight and well supported by JasonAngi, Josh Reeves and Harrison Elliswas a focal point in attack. CaptainDamien Young and Daniel Snell wereother solid performers and the boyssung the victory song loud and strong.Brad Starr returns from a shoulderinjury to lead the Ruck and CalebSawyer a key position player as wellwhich improves the teams depth andthe Colts can secure 5th spot with awin away from home and putting agap between them and lower on theladder.Waroona Reserves will belooking for redemption after adisappointing ten point loss to HallsHead last playing fixture. A disastroussecond quarter when they wereoutscored five goals to zip turned thegame on its head and they still hadopportunities to snatch victory in adetermined last quarter. RockyCaruso comes in this week andBobbie Bury from the Colts givesthem more run but they will miss ViceCaptain Lindsay Wilson, Mat Mortimerin the middle of the ground and AdamSimpson’s run from deep in defencewill also be missed but Ryan Wilsonand Dean Shore add to the big manstrengths. The midfield mosquito fleetwill need to lift their intensity andCoach Jasan Hysen will be keen for ateam performance to secure a top two
Waroona Coltsplayers excelled atGreat SouthernColts Carnivalheld at Kulin lastweekend asmembers of thePeel CavaliersAssociation ColtsTeam. Peelnarrowly lost theirfirst game of thecarnival 8-9 (57) toGSFL 9-5 (59) in
the last game of the round robincompetition. They just fell short of “Backto Back” Carnival wins. Waroona Coltsplayers in the squad were; JoshCommisso (Captain),Jayden Caratti,Brad Bromley, Joshua Reeves, JakeWilson. Five Peel players were named inthe Great Southern Colts All Stars teamas well. Josh Commisso (Captain)Jayden Caratti, Chtistopher Lee(Centrals) Brodie Forrestall (Mustangs),Kalani Scarrott (Baldivis). Peel CavaliersColts squad is looking forward toparticipating in the Annual LandmarkCountry Championships in Mid July to goone better after finishing runners up in2013 to the South West.
position. Last week’s loss saw themdrop from top to third position.Competition in the ReservesCompetition is extremely close andevery game will count in the secondhalf of the season.Waroona LeagueSquadis geared up for a top of thetable clash and recording its eightstraight win on the trot against theBlues. Mundijong Oval is a difficultground to play on for visiting sidesand the Demons will need to nullifykey forwards Ryan Murphy (ninegoals) and Daniel “Buckets” Wilson(four goals) to give themselves achance of winning. The return ofDefenders Tommy Carroll and RyanCourt from injury is timely and UtilityAaron Payrits adds flexibility to thedefensive unit. Waroona will miss therun and creative ability of Joel ”Fishy”Catalano and Rhys Bloxsidge but stillhave enough running power with coltsplayers Jayden Caratti and BradBromley coming of age supported bypremier wingman Ben Mathews-Herald. James Staples returns after amonth’s holiday as a key forward andformer captain Adam Clancycompliments the team with hismarking power. Craig Callaghan the“Little General” is sure to have amajor say in proceedings and MatThomas is a big game player. CaptainBen Wright will lead from the front andsupported by Courtney Lakay. Onpaper it is the Demons strongest teamfor the year and a good start isessential to keep the Blues on theback foot .A win will set up Waroona’sseason in 2014 after finishingRunners-up to Pinjarra after fourconsecutive premierships.
