KEY QUESTIONS
• Does this conditioning step simulate the efficiency drop
seen in charged filters?
• Do we plan to eventually adopt the international test
standard?
• Does the current motion as stated provide adequate
detail?
![Page 11: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Does this conditioning step simulate the efficiency drop seen in charged filters? • ASHRAE 1189 RP showed that 100% of the 15 filters
tested in-situ showed a definite decline in efficiency. • “Therefore, it is of crucial importance to have information
about the efficiency baseline, i.e. the efficiency which corresponds to the discharged state of the materials.”….VTT.
• Degradation of efficiency varies depending on particle size, wet vs. dry, humidity, particle composition, elapsed time, etc.
![Page 12: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Outdoor Air versus Exhaust Air • “When the exhausted indoor air was used to challenge the
charged filter materials, much weaker efficiency decrease was observed compared to challenge with outdoor air”…VTT
• “This supports the assumption that charged air filters may perform better in the air re-circulation systems, especially if there are no fine particle sources inside the building”…VTT
![Page 13: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
![Page 14: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Do we plan to eventually adopt the International Test Standard? • It is doubtful that the ISO committee will adopt the
Appendix J method. • If the ASHRAE adopts the international standard this will
be the second Baseline change since Std 52.2-2012. • Old test reports become obsolete just as with the previous
change. • We lose a lot of comparative data. • We need to step back and think about long range
planning.
![Page 16: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Does the Current Motion as stated provide Adequate Detail. • The cost of testing will go up but how much? • Can everyone’s need for new test reports be
accommodated in a timely manner and are we going to guarantee that no company will lose business because independent testing could not be obtained for a bid.
• Do we still present MERV or just MERV-A results.
• Is there a Timetable for the roll-out?
![Page 17: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

……Just the Facts
Some in-‐service filters decrease in efficiency
Extent of decrease dependant on media and contaminants
Appendix J lab conditioning step can cause efficiency decrease Lab-‐to-‐Lab reproducibility debatable Time to meet conditioned criteria can take up to 2 to 3 days Extent of decrease may be higher or lower than in-‐service filters Exposure to IPA vapor can cause efficiency decrease Circulating air/IPA vapor chamber creates uniform environment Lab-‐to-‐Lab reproducibility should be verified in circulating chamber Time to reach minimum efficiency approx. 1 hour IPA vapor reduces efficiency to the minimum value IPA vapor is as effective as IPA liquid immersion , or more so
![Page 19: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Condi1oning or Discharge ?? Potential Choices 1. Do Nothing, continue with Informative Appendix J 2. Change Appendix J to Mandatory 3. Add IPA Vapor as Appendix, retaining Appendix J as Informative 4. Replace Appendix J with Informative IPA Vapor method 5. Replace Appendix J with Mandatory IPA vapor method • If Appendix J is retained as Informative or made Mandatory, major
changes in 52.2 test procedures will not be necessary. Dust loading portions conducted on same filter as conditioned.
• If IPA vapor method is added as Informative or Mandatory, major
changes to 52.2 may want to be considered. Dust loading portions may, or may not, want to be conducted on discharged filter.
![Page 20: Draft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52nafahq.org/wp-content/uploads/DraftMeetingMinutes522SeattleJune-2014.pdfDraft Meeting Minutes ASHRAE SSPC 52.2 MOT ‐ General Ventilation Air‐Cleaning](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5cc9a0a088c99348378cc645/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Possible Major Changes to 52.2 IPA Vapor discharged filters can have lower efficiencies than filters
conditioned per Appendix J. Changes may be desired because of extent of IPA vapor discharge.
Effect of IPA vapor on dust loading not established. (More study on effect of Appendix J also needed?)
Test of two identical filters may be considered. First filter will be for initial test and subsequent five dust loading/efficiency tests, Second filter will also be for initial efficiency test and re test after IPA vapor exposure. Dust loading will not be performed on this second filter.
MERV curve may be established by minimum of numerical average of First
filter values, including dust loading, and Second filter discharged values. If First filter values drops below Second filter values, First filter values will be used directly.

Residential In-situ loading vs. ASHRAE 52.2 MCE & Appendix J • Evaluated 3 different types of electret HVAC
filters. • Measured initial efficiency of test filters • Installed each type of filters in 3 or 4 different
homes. • Removed at 90 days (EOL) to measure fractional
efficiency in the lab • Performed ASHRAE 52.2 testing on companion
filter for each performance level

Recommendations
• Conduct research to identify/develop a test aerosol that is representative for residential home environment.
• Use the average efficiency , average of initial, intermediate and final efficiencies, for reporting residential filter MERV value.
• Separate the air filter standards for commercial and residential applications.
