It is the year 1875 and Jonathan Harker, an English solicitor, travels to the mountains of Transylvania where Count Dracula’s castle stands.

Jonathan must do business with the Count: he wants to buy a house in England, but Jonathan does not feel comfortable at Castle Dracula. Strange things happen at night and Jonathan begins to be

afraid for his life. He is right: Count Dracula is one of the Un-Dead, a vampire that drinks the blood of living people…

But you must go, Jonathan. The Count is rich and perhaps he will

give you more work later.

Mina says:

Jonathan agrees to go but he does not know the terrible danger that was waiting for him in Transylvania

He arrives at a little town called Bitstriz. Transylvania is a strange and beautiful country. There are mountains, trees and rivers everywhere. Somewhere in the mountains is the Count’s home, Castle Dracula

Jonathans goes to a hotel to wait for the coach which will take him to Castle Dracula

When the people learn he is going to Castle Dracula, the room becomes silent and everybody looks at him afraid. The hotel keeper’s wife gives him a gold cross to protect himself

The coach travels up into the mountains. When the sun goes down and everything is dark, he hears a terrible sound of wolves howling.

The Count invites Jonathan to eat and drink something in a big and dark room. But Count Dracula neither eats nor drinks. Later, they sit by the fire and talk. Jonathan looks at the count carefully

Count Dracula’s description: his English is very good; his face is extremely white; his ears are like the ears of a cat, and his teeth are strong like the teeth of an animal. There is hair in his hands and his fingers are long. The smell which comes from him is terrible: like the smell of death. Jonathan feels afraid of him

During daytime Jonathan cannot see the Count, only at night. There are no servants in Castle Dracula. Jonathan finds a letter on the table:

Go anywhere in the castle, but some of the rooms are locked. Do not try to go into these rooms. Count Dracula

The following day the Count has all the papers for his new house in England. There is nothing to keep Jonathan in Castle Dracula, but the Count does not want him to leave.

Jonathan and the Count speak about England. The Count has plans to go there. Stupidly, Jonathan speaks about Mina and their plans to get married soon. The Count wants to see her photo

There is no mirror in all Castle Dracula. One morning Jonathan is shaving standing in from of a mirror that Mina has given him as a present. Jonathan feels a hand touching him from behind. It was the Count but he cannot see him in the mirror! Accidentally he cuts himself with the razor. Blood begins to run down his face. Dracula watches at him hungrily. By chance the Count touches the gold cross at Jonathan’s neck. His face changes. The Count takes the mirror and breaks it.
