Plants Cultivation and Marketing” for Stake holders at Exhibition

Society hall, Vijayawada on 01.02.2018 organised by HRS, Venkata-

ramannagudem and funded by National Medicinal Plants Board.

Dr J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research, Representatives of NMPB,

Pharma Industries, traders and farmers from various parts of

Coastal Andhra Pradesh participated in this programme.

Study tour of Hon’ble Members of Board of management

Dr.Nukasani Balaji garu, Dr.G.Subbi Reddy garu, Sri B.Nageswara Rao garu, Sri G.Padmanabha Naidu

garu and Sri Popuri Sivarama Krishna garu, Honorable members of Board of management of

Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University visited ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru,

University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu from 4th –9th February, 2018 to study various ongoing research and

developmental activities in the Institutions. During the visit Hon’ble members interacted with the

officials and scientists to know about the approaches being followed by the Organizations for taking

up developmental activities.

Education

Agri Sports Meet

Students of Dr YSRHU, Venkataramannagudem participated in 18th All

India Agri-sports meet 2017-18 held at UAS, Bengaluru from 30th Janu-

ary to 3rd February 2018. Ms. B. Rupa, studying I year B.Sc (Hons)

Horticulture at J.C. Diwakar Horticulture college, Tadipatri was

awarded with bronze medal for securing 3rd position in High jump.

NSS Activities

NSS Special camps were conducted at Kadiyadda and Jaggannapeta

villages for 3rd year B.Sc (Hons.) from 06.02.2018 to 12.02.2018.

Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs inaugurated the camp and

explained the role of youth in community service. Dr. K. Uma jyothi ,

Associate Dean of the College highlighted the importance of NSS ac-

tivities. Activities taken up were Socio Economic survey, Clean and

Green, Anganwadi and Library renovation, Free Eye camp, Aware-

ness Rallies, Kitchen gardening, Digital payments, Adult Education, Training rural home makers in

jams, Ketchup and squash preparation, plantation programme and computer literacy programmes.

NSS Volunteers of CoH, Anantharajupeta participated in “Hariseva” an

activity of Chinmayaranyam, Yellaipalli village, Korlakunta in which poor

old age people are served with one day meal and rice of 8 Kgs each with

the donations got from the visitors to the ashram on

05.02.2018. This program will be conducted once in a month in the

Ashram through which, all old age poor people residing in the nearby

villages will get food security for their livelihood. Students got excited to see all the old age people,

who are happily involved in the program. Students got message and advice from the organizers/

Ashram committee to have responsibility to take care of their old age parents and family members.

Visitors

Dr. Sushma Arya, Research Associate, International Potato Center, South

West Central Asia, New Delhi visited CoH, Venkataramannagudem and

attended harvesting, yield estimation, organoleptic tests of potato clones

being evaluated by Sri. M. Paratpara Rao, Asst Prof (GPBR) as a part of

his Ph.D (In service) research project. Farmers, staff and students of

CoH, VRGudem participated in the organoleptic test and participatory

varietal selection (PVS) conducted as per the norms of CIP, Peru.

Dr. J. Dilip Babu, Director of Research along with Dr. D.V. Swami, Principal

Scientist (Hort.) & Head, PHTRS, Venkataramannagudem switched on the

“LSD- Mini Lab Spray Dryer” at fruit and vegetable processing unit on

03.02.2018.

Survey

Smt. D. Aparna, Scientist (Hort.) and Ms.B.Swathi, Research Associate (Ento.), HRS, Venkataramanna-

gudem conducted survey in medicinal and aromatic plants for area under cultivation, pest and

disease incidence in Bapatla, Dariwada Kothapalem, Kukalavaripalem, Nagendrapuram,

Subbareddypalem, Kothakokatapalem, Veddullapalem, Bhethapudi, Tulasinagaram,

Kavurivaripalem, Kothapalem villages of Bapatla mandal on 02.02.2018.

Training Programmes

KVK, Venkataramannagudem organized one day training cum

exposure visit to the 140 tobacco farmers of East Godavari district

of Andhra Pradesh for equipping with latest technologies in

horticultural sector on 09.02.2018. Dr.B.Srinivasulu, Registrar and

Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy Director of Extension addressed the farmers the

necessity of shifting to horticultural crops from tobacco. KVK

technical staff explained about KVK activities and protected

cultivation of vegetables.

Dr. M. Raja Naik, Asst. Professor (Hort), CoH, Anantharajupeta

attended a training program to input dealers as resource person on

04.02.2018 at KVK, Kalikiri, Chittoor and delivered a lecture on

“Advanced production techniques along with plant protection

aspects in marigold, chrysanthemum, crossandra and heliconia”

followed by a field visit to protected cultivation of chrysanthemum

at Epulabailu village.

Dr.E.Karuna Sree, Senior Scientist & Head and G.Shali Raju Scientist

(Ento.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem participated in distribution of

Bee boxes under Mini Honey Mission Programme at State Bee Keeping

Extension Center (SBEC), KVIC, Vijayarai on 02.02.2018.

KVK, Periyavaram conducted an on-campus training programme on

Milky and Oyster mushrooms on 02.02.2018. The farmers showed

keen interest to start their own production units. Dr. M. Kavita, Sr.

Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head explained the production as well as

processing aspects of mushrooms.

Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science), KVK, Venkataramannagudem attended a meet-

ing organized by TPMU-Velugu, ITDA, K.R.Puram on 07.02.2018 and created awareness about role of

small ruminants and poultry as livelihood source to the tribal women.

Technical team of KVK, Periyavaram, conducted training programmes

on “Preparation of vermicompost and vermiwash” and “Intercropping

in acid lime” in Pigilam village of Balayapalli mandal and explained

about nutrient content, preparation, application, uses of vermicompost

and vermiwash and also the advantages of intercropping in acid lime

along with water management.

KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted off-campus training programme on

improved management practices in cashew at D.N.Palem village of

Devipatnam mandal on 08.02.2018, . Sri P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist

(SS&AC) and K.C.Bhanumurthy, Scientist (Hort.) explained about the

nutrient and pest management to be followed especially for

T- mosquito bug infestation.

Technical team of KVK, Vonipenta visited Thotlapalli village on

06.02.2018 and conducted a training programme on “Importance of Soil

and Water Analysis, Soil Health Cards” and explained about nutrient,

management and establishment of vermicompost units.

Technical team of KVK, Vonipenta visited Chenchaiahgaripalli village on

07.02.2018 and conducted training programme on “Importance of Farmer

Producer Organisations, Soil and Water analysis, Soil Health Card” and also

application of recommended dose of fertilizers.

Scientists of HRS, Ambajipeta with the financial assistance of

Coconut Development Board conducted 6 days skill training

programme to the unemployed rural youth (19th batch) on

‘Climbing of coconut trees with climbing device and scientific

management practices on crop production, plant protection and

quality planting material’ from 29.02.18 to 03.02.2018.

On campus three days training programme on cocoa was conducted

at HRS, Ambajipeta from 2nd to 4th February, 2018 with the financial

assistance of Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development Board,

Kochi and explained the production, protection technologies and

marketing aspects pertaining to cocoa cultivation along with one

day field visit to Avidi village and demonstrated pruning techniques,

identification of pests and diseases for the benefit of the farmers. Sri. B. Nageswara Rao, Hon’ble

member, Board of Management, Dr.YSRHU has inaugurated the training programme in the presence

of Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research.

Sri. G.Shali Raju, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem

attended a training programme as resource person on ‘Integrated

Pest Management practices in cashew and mango’ at Ayyavaram and

Chadaraasigunta villages, Nallajerla mandal organized by

Department of Horticulture on 03.02.2018 and explained about pest

and disease management in cashew and mango followed by a visit to

orchards and interaction with the farmers.

Awareness programmes on INM and IPB

Dr.S.Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) and Sri. K.C. Bhanumurthy,

Scientist (Hort.), KVK, Pandirimamidi participated as resource

persons in awareness programme on INM and IPM in chillies at

Nandigama and V.R. Puram villages of Chintur mandal organized

by Department of Horticulture, East Godavari on 01.02.2018.

Integrated nutrient and pest management strategies and water

management through drip irrigation was elucidated to farmers. About 132 farmers participated in

this program.

Awareness programme on Nutritional Assessment

On 06.02.2018, technical team of KVK, Vonipenta have visited Thotla-

palli village for conducting Nutritional assessment among farm

women. The scientists assessed the farm womens’ nutrition intake

through various foods and their food habits and also observed the defi-

ciency disorders among farm women.

Vocational Training Programme

On 06.02.18, KVK, Periyavaram organized one day training cum

exposure visit on Mass Media for RHWEP students of CoH, Anantharaju-

peta at All India Radio, Tirupati. Officers of Dooradarshan Kendra

explained the technology involved for recording and telecasting radio

and TV programmes.

Field days

A Field Day cum farmers interaction meeting was organised

at HRS, Peddapuram on 01.02.2018 to create awareness on

improved package of practices in cassava and other

horticultural crops. Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension

presided over the function. Sri.Raja Suri Babu Raju, Munci-

pal Chairman, Peddapuram; Sri. Mutyala Veera Bhadra Rao,

AMC Chairman, Peddapuram and Sri Gudala Ramesh, MPP,

Peddapuram have participated in the meeting and gave

their valuable suggestions. Dr BVK Bhagavan, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Zonal Research Head,

HRS, Kovvur has participated and described briefly about research station activities. Scientists of

HRS, Peddapuram, Ambajipeta and Kovvur participated in the programme.

Scinetits of KVK, Periyavaram conducted training on “Azolla as poul-

try feed” at Kuppayapalem village of Dakkili mandal on 05.02.2018.

Dr.P.Manjari explained about the importance of Azolla as feed for

poultry and cattle and also its cultivation practices. Dr.Syed Rasool.

AD AH, Venkatagiri and Dr.Kishore Kumar, VAS, Lingasamudram also

participated in the programme and explained to the farmers regard-

ing various schemes and subsidies related to animal husbandry. Two demonstration units of Azolla

were also installed at farmer’s fields as part of FLD.

Diagnostic Visits

Dr. M.Kavita, Sr.Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head, KVK, Periyavaram visited

acid lime orchard at Kuppayapalem village on 04.02.2018 and

suggested the control measures of nematode in acidlime.

Dr. L.Ranjith Kumar, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Periyavaram visited chilli

field infested with mites at Chintagunta village of Venkatagiri mandal on

03.02.2018 and suggested the farmer to spray propargite 57% EC

@2ml/l @ 15 days interval.

Dr. L.Ranjith Kumar, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Periyavaram visited

paddy field affected with sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) disease

at Bangarupeta village of Venkatagiri mandal on 06.02.2018 and

suggested the farmer to spray of hexaconazole 5% SC @ 2ml/l or

propiconazole 25%EC @ 1ml/l of water at 15 days interval.

On 06.02.2018, Sri Bhanumurthy K.C, Scientist (Hort.) and Dr. N.

Srividya Rani, Scientist (Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi visited tomato

field at Peddageddhada village of Rampachodavaram mandal and

observed bacterial wilt and mosaic virus and suggested control

measures to farmers.

On 14.02.2018, Sri K.C.Bhanumurthy, Scientist (Hort.), KVK, Pandirima-

midi visited cashew cashew nursery at Kamrajupeta village of Gokava-

ram mandal and observed collar rot infection in cashew grafts.

Suggested to reduce the number of irrigations and soil drenching with

COC @ 3 g/l twice with an interval of 15 days.

Dr L. Mukunda Lakshmi, Scientist (Hort.) and Dr. T.Rajasekharam, Scientist (Pl. Path.), CRS, Tirupati

along with department officials inspected the sweet orange orchards at Durgi mandal, Guntur

district on 08.02.2018.

Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.), HRS, Ambajipeta

carried out field diagnostic visit of coconut gardens about

Rugose spiraling whitefly pest organized by Department of

Horticulture, Srikakulam district at Ravada village of Ranastalam

mandal, Garividi village of Vizianagaram district and suggested

the Ganoderma, Stem bleeding disease remedial measures to the

farmers on 07.02.2018.

On 06.02.2018, Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science),

KVK, Venkataramannagudem attended open wound case in non

descriptive cow at Venkataramannagudem village and controlled

bleeding with styptochrome injection, locally anaesthesized with

5% lignocaine, sutured the internal muscles with catgut & external

skin with nylon thread and finally administered with

inj.Dicrysticine and inj. Melonex, I/M.

On 01.02.2018, Sri.G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) along with

technical team of KVK, Periyavaram visited banana fields for diagnosis

of pests and diseases at Akulanarayanapalli village of Mydukur mandal.

The scientists identified aphid infestation in banana and recommended

spraying of imidachlorprid @ 0.3 ml/l or acetamiprid @ 0.2 g/l.

On 02.02.2018 and 03.02.2018, technical team of KVK, Periyava-

ram visited Settivaripalli and Musalnayapalli villages for diagnosis

of pests and diseases in chilli. The scientists identified powdery

mildew infection in chillies and recommended wettable sulphur @

0.3 % or hexaconazole @ 0.2 %. Also identified die back in chilli

and recommended spraying of propiconazole @ 0.1 % or azox-

ystrobin @ 0.05% or tebuconazole @ 0.05%.

On 08.02.2018, Sri.G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) along with tech-

nical team of KVK, Vonipenta visited maize field for diagnosis of pests

and diseases at Mudireddipalli Thanda village of Mydukur mandal and

identified maize pink borer infestation and recommended spraying of

chlorpyriphos @ 0.25 % or application of carbofuran 3G @ 8 Kg/acre in

leaf whorls.

On 15.02.2018, Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science)

and Dr. A.Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist (Fishery Science), KVK,

Venkataramannagudem visited poultry farm at Muddappagudem and

observed facial swelling & torticollis symptoms in Srinidhi birds and

suggested treatment with 10% enrocin liquid, megadox powder, vit-e

and selenium supplementation orally through drinking water for 5

days.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.) and Research Associate (Ento.), HRS, Ambajipeta

carried out field diagnostic visit to Kadiyapulanka village to estimate Encarsia guadelopae parasiti-

sation efficiency in rugose spiralling whitefly affected gardens on 15.02.2018.

Method Demonstrations

On 08.02.2018, Scientists of KVK, Pandirimamidi demonstrated

second schedule spray at flowering stage as part of demonstration of

T-Mosquito bug Management in cashew at Velagapalli and D.N. Palem

villages under TSP 2017-18. Plant protection chemicals and micronu-

trient mixture were also provided to 40 cashew farmers covering two

villages of Devipatnam mandal.

On 07.02.2018, Dr. A.Srinivas, Sr.Scientist & Head, Dr. S.Adarsha,

Scientist (Ento.), P. Raja Sekhar, Scientist (SS&AC) and Sri Vidya

Rani .N, Scientist (Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi participated in polam

pilustondi program conducted by Department of Agriculture,

Devipatnam mandal and explained about good agricultural

practices in various crops.

Front Line Demonstrations

On 14.02.2018 Dr. K.Ponnusamy, Joint Director, Directorate of Oil

Seeds Development, Hyderabad and Shri.S.Srikanth, Senior Technical

Officer along with Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy Director of Extension visited the

Cluster Front Line Demonstrations on Pulses and Oilseeds fields i.e.,

rabi black gram, sesame and summer groundnut fields in P.R.Palem,

Gunnampalli, Takkellapadu and Kommugudem villages and inter-

acted with the farmers.

General

Visits

Hundred Farmers from Payakaraopeta and Narsipatnam villages

of Visakhapatnam district made a visit to Horticultural Research

Station, Ambajipeta on 09.02.2018 as part of intra state exposure

visit and were briefed about the production and protection tech-

nologies of coconut, cocoa and high density cropping systems by

the scientists for getting higher yields and income and later on

explained the ongoing research activities during field visit.

Dr.V.Deepthi, Scientist (Agril Extn.), KVK, Venkataramannagudem along

with the RHWEP students visited Vishnu Radio Station at Vishnu Educa-

tional Society, Bhimavaram on 15.02.2018 and got exposure to recording,

editing and broadcasting of programmes.

A batch of 97 rural youth from various mandals of

V i z i a n a g a r a m d i s t r i c t a l o n g w i t h

Sri. V. V. Appalanaidu, Asst. Manager, STEP, Vizianagaram

visited CoH, Anantharajupeta on 07.02.2018 under the

program of “Inter district Youth exchange programme”.

Dr. M. Ramakrishna, Associate Dean explained them

about importance of Horticultural courses and the scope

for entrepreneurship in the field of horticulture. Dr. K. Swarajya Lakshmi, Associate Professor (H)

and Dr. G.Thanuja Sivaram, Asst. Prof (H) participated in the programme.

Meetings

Miss N.Srividya Rani, Scientist (Extn.), KVK, Pandirimamidi and

Dr.K.Venkata Subbaiah, Scientist (Hort.), KVK, Venkataramanna-

gudem attended 1st International Extension Congress, New Horizons

of Extension, Challenges and Opportunities at ICAR-CIWA,

Bhubaneswar, Odisha from 1st to 3rd February,2018. Arranged an

exhibition stall of Dr.Y.S.R Horticultural University.

Dr.TrilochanMohapatra, Secretary, DARE-Director General, ICAR-

New Delhi, Dr.A.K.Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), visited the stall and in-

teracted regarding the on-going activities carried out by Dr.YSRHU and appreciated our activities.

Dr. P. Subbaramma, Asst. Prof, CoH, Venkataramannagudem attended International symposium on

“Biodiversity of medicinal plants and orchids: Emerging trends and challenges” held at Acharya

Nagarjuna University, Guntur on 10.02.2018 and gave oral presentation on “ Effect of spacing and

fertilizer application on vegetative growth, herbase and essential oil yields of mint (Mentha viridis )

in red sandy loam soils of coastal Andhra Pradesh’’.

Dr. K. Uma Jyothi, Associate Dean, CoH, Venkataramannagudem attended a meeting on

“Gnanabhoomi” at District Collectorate, Eluru, West Godavari Dt. and discussed about the updation

of data in respect of Dr.YSRHU.

Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.) and Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.)

participated district level workshop on “Scientific coconut cultivation technologies/value addition”

being organized by Coconut Development Board, A.P. State Unit and Dept. of Horticulture,

Visakhapatnam district at Rambilli village of Visakhapatnam district and delivered lecture on coco-

nut scientific cultivation aspects and quality planting material production on 05.02.2018.

Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.) participated in one day district level workshop on

“Scientific coconut cultivation technologies/value addition” organized by Coconut Development

Board and delivered a lecture on “Scientific production and Plant protection technologies in

coconut” on 06.02.2018.

urban and rural development society (GUARD), Hyderabad.

Dr.P.Rama Devi, Scientist (Pl. Path) & Head, HRS, V.R.Gudem participated and gave an invited talk on

“First Report of Predatory Maggots (Mycodiplosis sp) Occurrence on Rusts of Two Medicinal Trees”

and Smt. D. Aparna, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, V.R.Gudem participated and gave oral presentation on “Genetic

Divergence in Acorus calamus” at International Symposium on “Biodiversity of Medicinal Plants &

Orchids: Emerging Trends and Challenges” (BMPO-2018) from 09th to 11th February, 2018 at

Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur.

Dr E Karunasree, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataramannagudem attended radio recording on

“Bee keeping in horticultural crops” at All India Radio, Vijayawada on 08.02.2018.

Awards

Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs received Dr. Anand Prakash award

for outstanding research contributions in the field of pest management

of horticultural crops especially coconut eriophyid mite at 16th AZRA

International Conference on Applied Zoological Research for Sustain-

able Agriculture & Food Security organized by Applied Zoologists

Research Association, Odisha and Department of Entomology & Agricul-

tural Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi from 9th to 11th

February, 2018. And Co-chaired the session- V, Economic Zoology and

presented a research paper entitled “Explorative Studies on Red Palm Mite, Raoiella indica a serious

threat of production and trade of Coconut in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies”.

Dr.N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scientist (Ento.) got 1st Best oral

presentation of Prof. P. Kameswara Rao Award for 2017-18 for

research paper entitled “Successful management of coconut black

headed caterpillar Opisina arenosella out break in Andhra Pradesh

through biological control” and Sri. G. Krishna Rao, Research Associate

(Ento.) got 3rd Best oral presentation of Prof.

P.Kameswara Rao Award for 2017-18 for research paper entitled

“Identification of candidate genes regulating pre pupal diapause of red

banded mango caterpillar, Deanolis sublimbalis” during “XVI AZRA Inter-

national conference on Applied Zoological Research for sustainable agri-

culture and food security” from 9th to 11th February, 2018 at Banaras

Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.

Dr.K.Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Kovvur received IARI

merit medal from Hon’ble President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovindji in

56th Convocation programme held at IARI, New Delhi on 09.02.2018 for

his research work entitled “Studies on plant regeneration in marigold

though in vitro culture of male and female gametophyte in Tagetes

spp.” He received his Ph.D. (Hort.) degree from Shri Radha Mohan

Singh, Union Agriculture Minister.

Dr. M. Raja Naik, Assistant Professor (Hort.), CoH, Anantharajupeta

received the “Excellence in Teaching Award” and Dr. K. Lalitha, Assis-

tant Professor (Agronomy), CoH, Anantharajupeta got “Best Doctoral

OBITUARY

Sri B.Chenna Reddy, AEO, HRS, Lam expired on 03.02.2018. Smt.K.Ruth Kumari, AEO, CoH, Venkata-ramannagudem expired on 11.02.2018. All the officers and staff members of Dr.YSRHU expressed deep condolences on the unfortunate sad events.
