1 Dr. Stefano Ubaldini, Short CV Dr. S. Ubaldini is senior research scientist, Member of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute of Geotechnics of the Slovak Academy of Science (SAS) and head of the Hydrometallurgy and Electrochemical Laboratories of the Institute of Environmental Geology and Geoengineering of the Italian National Research Council (IGAG-CNR). He is Member of the Operational Groups, in the framework of the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials (EIP RMs) of Horizon 2020, as representative of Academia, research institutes and think tanks https://ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/eip-raw- materials/en/members . He has been appointed to take part of the Governance of the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials (EIP on RMs), as a Sherpa member for Science Europe at the European Commission, in the framework of the High Level Steering Group/Sherpa Group of the EIP on RMs. He took part, with the mandate of the European Commission, to the Governance of the EIP on RMs, as Sherpa member - for CNR - of the High Level Steering Group/Sherpa Group. Relevant skills, scientific activity and experience Dr. Ubaldini’s main area of expertise is in hydrometallurgy and bio-hydrometallurgy. His activity has been carried out mainly in the framework of the primary and secondary raw materials (mineral and materials industry) for over 25 years, including fundamental research, hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy of low-grade ores, metal extraction from solutions, precious metals recovery with novel leachants, treatment of waste materials, process development and design. His special interests are the interdisciplinary approach (mineralogy, leaching kinetics and solution chemistry) to the problems involved in the extraction and the recovery of metals values from primary and secondary raw materials. Dr. Ubaldini has a wide experience in the preparation and management of research projects in the ambit of the development of hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical operations, to recovery base and precious metals from wastes and ores of different origins and energy recovery from industrial wastes in order to valorise them.     Dr. S. Ubaldini is senior research scientist, Member of the International Scientific Advisory

    Board of the Institute of Geotechnics of the Slovak Academy of Science (SAS) and head of the

    Relevant skills, scientific activity and experience

    Dr. Ubaldini’s main area of expertise is in hydrometallurgy and bio-hydrometallurgy. His activity

    has been carried out mainly in the framework of the primary and secondary raw materials (mineral

    and materials industry) for over 25 years, including fundamental research, hydrometallurgy and

    biometallurgy of low-grade ores, metal extraction from solutions, precious metals recovery with

    novel leachants, treatment of waste materials, process development and design.

    His special interests are the interdisciplinary approach (mineralogy, leaching kinetics and solution

    chemistry) to the problems involved in the extraction and the recovery of metals values from

    primary and secondary raw materials.

    Dr. Ubaldini has a wide experience in the preparation and management of research projects in the

    ambit of the development of hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical operations, to recovery

    base and precious metals from wastes and ores of different origins and energy recovery from

    industrial wastes in order to valorise them.

    He has participated to 15 EC projects and managed R&D projects with funds from industrial and

    governmental resources; he was scientist responsible in EC projects: H2020, Raw Materials &

    Recycling, Brite-Euram, VII FP, Life-Environment and INCO-Copernicus and INTAS.

    Dr. Ubaldini is author of more than 200 publications on national and international journals and

    Main projects Dr. Ubaldini is currently scientist responsible of Bilateral Cooperation Projects with international

    research institutions.

    From January 2020 he is the scientific responsible of international Project in the frame of the

    Scientific Cooperation Agreement CNR/SAS, funded by the CNR and the Slovak Academy of

    Sciences and entitled: “Recovery of critical raw materials from industrial wastes by advanced

    methods” (years 2020-2022).

    From January 2018 he is the scientific responsible of Project in the frame of the Scientific

    Cooperation Agreement CNR/ASM, funded by the CNR and the Moldovan Academy of Sciences,

    entitled “Thermodynamic optimization of innovative processes developed to valorize industrial

    wastes containing valuable metals”(years 2018-2020).

    From the year 2017, he is the scientific responsible of CNR Project n. DTA.AD005.044, entitled "

    Innovative technologies for the recovery of precious metals", relating to the Design Area: 5 -

    Technologies and Processes for the Environment.

    Since 2016, he is the scientific responsible of CNR Project n. DTA.AD005.044, entitled "Metals

    Recovery by low grade georesources", relating to the Design Area: 5 - Technologies and Processes

    for the Environment.

    He is the scientific advisor IGAG-CNR for the international research program Italy-Brazil

    "CAPES", in the framework of the initiative "Science without Borders".

    From 2013 to 2017, he has been Italian scientific responsible of 2 Projects in the frame of the

    Scientific Cooperation Agreement CNR/SAV, funded by the CNR and the Slovak Academy of

    Sciences, entitled “Development of innovative processes for the valorization of spent batteries ”.

    From 2014 to 2016 he has been the Italian scientific responsible of international research program

    carried out in cooperation with the International Science & Technology Centre (ISTC) of the

    Project entitled “Innovative reserve savings technologies of rebellious arsenic-containing gold ores

    processing”, conducted jointly with the VI Nikitin Institute of Chemistry of Tajik Academy of

    Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan, supported by Russian Federation.

    From the year 2012 to the year 2015 was the Italian scientific responsible of international research

    program carried out in cooperation with the International Science & Technology Centre (ISTC) of

    two Projects, entitled "Ecologically pure new technologies of persistent arsenic-containing gold

    ores processing” and "Innovative new ecologically pure technologies of persistent arsenic-

    containing antimony and gold ores processing with application of nanosorbents for sewage

    treatment ", conducted jointly with the VI Nikitin Institute of Chemistry of Tajik Academy of

    Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan, supported by Russian Federation.

    From 2009 to 2015 he has been the scientific responsible of the CNR Project entitled “Recovery of

    heavy metals from wastewater”.

    From the year 2010 to the year 2012 he was the Italian scientific responsible of the Project n. 1 of

    the Scientific Cooperation Agreement CNR/SAV, funded by the CNR and the Slovak Academy of

    Sciences, entitled "Development of sustainable physicochemical and biological-chemical processes

    for the remove of metals and metalloids from the waters and soils”.

    For the years 2009-2011 he has been the Italian coordinator of the International Research Project

    entitled: “Development of environmental technologies to remove heavy metals from industrial and

    municipal wastes”, in the framework of a Scientific Cooperation agreement between Italian

    National Council of Researches and CONCYTEC (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería of Lima-

    Perù).

    From the year 2007 to the year 2009, he was the Italian coordinator of the International Research

    Project entitled “Development of sustainable physicochemical and biological processes for the

    remove of metals and metalloids from the waters and soils”, in the framework of the Scientific

    Cooperation agreement between Italian National Council of Researches and Slovak Academy

    Sciences.

    From 2007 to 2009 he has been scientific responsible of the CNR spontaneous free theme research

    entitled “Valorisation of agro-industrial residues by re-using with hydrometallurgical processes”.

    In the framework of the S&T Co-operation Programme between Italian Republic and Republic of

    Slovakia for the years 2004-2007, he was the Italian coordinator of the Project “Study of relations

    of mineralization, acidity and autochthonous bacteria occurrence in acid mine drainage”.

    Dr. Ubaldini has been scientific responsible of the contract INCO - Copernicus2 n. ICA2 - CT2000-

    10042 (A New Integrated Biological Process for Agricultural Applications of Wastewaters sludges)

    and of the contract INTAS - 01-2063 (Enhanced Electroremediation of Radionuclide and Heavy

    Metal - Contaminated Soils and Wastes ) .

    He managed R&D projects with funds from industrial and governmental resources; he was scientist

    responsible in 10 EC projects: H2020, Raw Materials & Recycling, Brite-Euram, VII FP, Life-

    Environment, Eco-Innovation, INCO-Copernicus and INTAS.

    He has been Component of the Steering Committee of International Projects, financial supported by

    the European Commission.

    Current research interests

    Its current research interests are primary and secondary raw materials, with particular reference

    versus the hydrometallurgy and biometallurgy of low-grade georesources, with the main aim to

    recover base and precious metals and to develop sustainable and innovative technologies for

    processing of industrial wastes (spent catalysts, industrial tailings, batteries, WEEE etc.) and mining

    residues, coming also from abandoned sites, and treatment of waste waters.
