Early Fall 2012 Newsletter & Schedule

In this issue of my Newsletter I would like to pay tribute to the religious orders whose spiritual charisms inspired the holistic component of my learning and test prep programs. Putting the charisms of these orders to practical use in the field of education—specifically, in my SAT Retreat, Slaying the Dragons of Standardized Tests, and Learning Skills programs—is not only an honor but also an opportunity to offer students a healthy option in their approach to standardized tests.

In Gratitude:…to the Medical Mission Sisters for their Healing charism: To be a healing presence in the heart of a wounded world. Standardized tests wound the hearts and minds of many test-takers who fall prey to self-doubt because of unmet expectation. MMS’s Healing charism boosts student confidence by guiding them to make healthy choices and showing them practical ways to maximize the body’s contribution to personal best performance.

In Gratitude:…to theJesuits for reformulating ancient wisdoms into one of the most effective methods we have for understanding the movements of God’s Spirit. Discernment of Spirits helps my students see themselves as God sees them rather than through the lens of harsh judgment, freeing them from

unhelpful attitudes and distractions so that they can more fully access and use their knowledge to solve problems.

In Gratitude:…to theOrder of Saint Benedict, whose charism of Balance is helping the young people in my programs, and their families, to understand the importance of living a balanced life in order to arrive at the test site healthy and prepared. In the words of a former student: Those who are not healthy within themselves are not healthy at the testing site.

In Gratitude:…to theOrder of Saint Basil the Great, whose wisdoms I use in my Learning Skills program to help families 1) understand the components of IQ, 2)honestly assess each other’s gifts and 3) nurture the intelligence of the whole person.

An article in the New York Times (Risky Rise of the Good-Grade Pill, June 10, 2012) describes how students, including students in the Philadelphia area, are using pills to help their performance on tests. In addition to performance enhancing drugs, sophisticated SAT cheating rings have also made the national news in recent months. My spiritual-academic programs offer test takers another option—to do the right thing by giving truth, health, and God a chance! I am in the process of expanding the reach of my programs so that they can help more students. Holistic Preparation for All High School Entrance and Scholarship Tests

Primarily a holistic program that provides a selection of Math, English and Cognitive problems. Holistic component prepares students physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to perform at their best on high-stakes tests. At least one parent must attend all or most of the sessions.
