is fit the new black?

In recent years, we have seen gyms, diet shops and wellness programs cropping up exponentially across Riyadh. Every week, there’s a new workout class or new diet plan to try, all of which promising amazing results.

Hence, for November, we decided to come out with a health issue that’s attuned with the fit and fab high everyone’s getting into lately. However, as we started to put our thoughts together, we’ve come to a realization. At Destination, we don’t agree that fit is neither the new black nor that healthy is the new skinny — it shouldn’t just be a trend or fad, being healthy is a lifestyle.

And so, for our annual health edition, we sought to inform and inspire you with pages full of can-do ideas about how to live a healthier and happier life. We have articles that would motivate you to make the right choices for your wellbeing.

We start you off with the most important meal of your day, breakfast! With our top list, you’ll have no excuse not to grab a bite in the morning. We’ve also sprinkled in some quick and healthy recipes for stay-in moments.

From breaking juicing myths to acing your run at the supermarket, there’s something here to tweak your eating habits for the better.

Being healthy also means making time to move around and giving your body the attention it deserves. Exercise isn’t just for gym buffs, as you’ll see in our top list of fun workouts.

Last, but definitely not the least, take the time to read about Abdullah Al Quraishi, the Saudi who has turned his personal weight-loss journey into a business that’s changing lifestyles for the better. In addition, gain a new perspective on life through the story of Obie Melibary, a young boy battling cancer whose teaching us all to smile a little more.

thumbs up to RESTAURANT PROVIDES FREE FOOD TO THE NEEDY

A Riyadh restaurant has gone out of its way to make sure the hungry are fed, and no questions are asked. A seafood restaurant owner posted a sign saying “If you do not have the money, you can place your order here for free,” in the window of his business offering food at no cost to individuals who ask for it. A restaurant spokesman said: “The restaurant owner decided to present this offer from his restaurant to anyone who cannot afford to pay for their meal after a fire broke out in the premises and, thank God, escaped without damage.”

Restaurant staff do not ask questions and the owner considers the offer ongoing charity. Some restaurant patrons test the staff by asking for free food. When the food is given, many simply pay, noting their surprise that the restaurant owner is true to his word. Many families have benefited from the restaurant’s policy.

Municipal leaders, private businesses and the public in general should take collective responsibility for the deaths of a father and his 5-year-old son, who were killed recently in Jeddah by toxic fumes after the boy fell into an open sewer pipe. The manhole cover was missing and the boy tripped and fell into the hole. His father attempted to rescue his son, but both victims died while inside the tank. A passing traffic patrol officer attempted to rescue the victims, but it was too late.

SHOPAHOLIC:fancy OR FEARSomE?

These are some of the many questions asked by recovering shopaholics during their treatment from what is better known as Compulsive Buying Disorder (aka CBD).

“Shopaholic” is a fad term that is largely associated with elevated purchasing power, chic and trendiness. The term is popularized by Hollywood and the media often ignoring the unpleasant true beneath it. E-commerce made our lives much easier and afforded a mushrooming world population access to global products at the click of a button. According to US National Library of Medicine, it is estimated that the disorder affects up to 8 percent of the general adult population in the US. About 90 percent of those affected are female. Data on Saudi Arabia are not available.Shopping addiction sometimes isn’t treated like a serious behavioral disorder unless it coexists in a patient with substance abuse, clinical

depression or other obvious behavior or mood issues.Nonetheless, not all compulsive shoppers require therapy or medical intervention. CBD has wide degrees of severity and most trendy shoppers do not fall in the alarming category (maybe because they can’t afford to!). Like all compulsive behavior, overspending can be addressed by the person him/herself and can be tamed into full recovery using many techniques. One of the best that I know of is taking a closer look at the underprivileged. If you think you are continually

overspending go and reach out to the poor, visit the ill and charity organizations in your area (don’t just browse online). Listen to their stories and lend a helping hand.

There are many more tried and proven suggestions to help control overspending, but this is one form of healing that touches deep into the soul and reminds us of the vanity of material possessions and the real values in sharing and giving.

By Jou PabalateIt is always inspiring to come across a Saudi entrepreneur who is committed to creating positive change in the lives of others. Abdulrahman Al Quraishi sets an example of such commitment and how one can turn a personal struggle into a story of triumph over adversity. As the founder of Après Maroc (also known as Baad Al Maghrib), the first Saudi company for life enhancement designed for the Middle East, Abdulrahman shares with us how he’s determined to change lives one trip at a time…

Who is Abdulrahman Al Quraishi? It is hard for a person to introduce himself for as long as he is in a continuous journey of self-discovery. But I could definitely say that at this stage of my life, I’m the founder of a Saudi company that focuses on lifestyle enhancement and improving the quality of a person’s life. I aspire through my work to contribute in building the self-esteem of those we serve.

What made you decideto create Après maroc?I have spent the past decade of my life as a trainer and a consultant in the field of psychology specializing in

change my lifestyle and I wanted to share my experience with others, but this time it wouldn’t be through conventional courses and lectures. On the contrary, we have turned it to a life journey wherein participants would have the experience along with the experts in order to provide the best environment.

Wherein the participant is trained on how to choose food that suits him without going through diet and deprivation. We rebalance that side so that he will learn his food portion and the right time to eat; therefore, he will live the experience of eating healthy and will see the immediate results on his skin, hair, health and activity.

Through it the participant will discover himself; therefore his self-esteem will improve, he will also let go of all the pressures that he faced through his previous lifestyle, and will gain the skill of building future goals and life planning while being confident and independent.

What makes it different from other weight-loss or life enhancement programs from other parts of the world? We’ve built the Après Maroc program based on the latest scientific methods in lifestyle enhancement through specialized experts in three main pillars in the human’s life:

The rates and statistics of diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, etc., show that there are defects that should be addressed and spread the awareness of the danger of having a bad lifestyle and its effects on people.

So awareness comes first in solving that problem. Most people live their lives the way they’re used to and maybe they didn’t get the chance to educate in nutritional programs, physical activities and how to enjoy sports.

Where is Après maroc now as an enterprise? What does it do or offer exactly?Après Maroc is a Saudi company, and its main office is located in Riyadh. It was established in 2013 and currently there is another branch in Marrakech, Morocco.

Après Maroc provides a full program in enhancing lifestyle in two weeks through a trip to Morocco. And starting 2015 we are going to launch four trips per year so that we can provide our services to those who need it.

What do you think are the major health/lifestyle issues people in Riyadh are facing? How do you think these issues can be resolved? The latest studies show that Saudi Arabia spends more than SR 500 million in curing diseases related to obesity. Personally, I see Riyadh as a city similar to other capital cities in the GCC; the biggest challenge is the lifestyle itself that leads to bad habits. These habits result in obesity, diabetes, depression and a lower quality of life.

We have done fuve trips since we started and we met a lot of amazing people throughout it. Meeting new people and being part of their change while witnessing their success stories might be one of the most important reasons that makes me enjoy Après Maroc.

He had a near death experience four years ago, which made him fear flying and used his car as the main means of transportation and traveling. We started his program in Riyadh (his hometown) before traveling to Morocco. Our main aim was to fulfill the first goal that is getting him from Riyadh to Morocco safely, and Alhamdulillah we succeeded in breaking his phobia and he travels fearless now.

Smile forBy Jou Pabalate This is story of Obada and his family. He enjoys playing, going to kindergarten and listening to the stories of Captain Underpants. He has a contagious giggle that could light up the room. Obie is like any other 3-year-old boy except for one thing: He’s an awesome cancer fighter.

Prior to his diagnosis, Obie was a picture of health. There was nothing out of the ordinary that indicated a storm was brewing inside him. In fact, if it wasn’t for his parents vigilance to regularly take their kids for checkups to their pediatrician in Jeddah, days or even months could have passed without knowing what was going on.

Fayiz Melibary, a dentist by training but now pursuing a career in marketing, was in Jeddah, his hometown, for work. His wife, Nuha, kids, Malak and Obie, joined him for a two-week family vacation. Little did they know that on March 19 their lives would take an unexpected turn.

Obie had to take a break from school. He still makes time to do his assignments and reading is one of his favorite activities with his mom and dad.

Page 29: DR Issue 21

DESTINATION RIYADH 27

“It was an almost perfect day,” recalled Fayiz with a half smile and a momentary sigh. “We had just spent the morning and afternoon at the beach but had to take a break so we could take Malak (his daughter) and Obie to our favorite pediatrician for a routine checkup.”

It was during this visit that the doctor noticed that Obie was pale and felt that his liver was enlarged. The pediatrician was thorough and immediately ordered for a CBC (blood test) for Obie, hoping to rule anemia as the cause.

A few days later, Obie’s parents received a call from the doctor. He found the initial results of the blood work distressing and asked that they rush him to the emergency room. Both having a medical background, Fayiz and Nuha knew that something was wrong when a hematology oncologist entered the room. Nonetheless, they tried hard to keep positive and hoped for the best.

What ensued over the course of a week was but a preview to what life would be like for the family in the next three and a half years. Obie was to be prodded and pricked by needles more than an average person would experience in a lifetime.

On April 1, the news no parent wanted to hear became a reality. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) also known as Pre B Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

As per the Mayo Clinic’s definition of the disease the word “acute” in acute lymphocytic leukemia comes from the fact that the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones.

The “lymphocytic” in acute lymphocytic leukemia refers to the white blood cells called lymphocytes, which ALL affects.

ALL is the most common type of cancer among children. While it remains to be a leading cause of death in children, it must be noted that ALL patients have 80 percent chance of survival when treatment managed effectively.

I was reluctant to ask how Fayiz and Nuha felt when they received the news; knowing well that no words could fully explain what they’re going through. Nonetheless, our conversation had to face the orange elephant in the room:

“You want to know how I or rather, we felt?” Fayiz said in a shaking voice. “It was like we were sitting in the living room and a train, out of the blue, decided to crash in and park there. Up until that point, there were days when our biggest worry was not knowing what we would like to eat for dinner.”

The train wasn’t going away anytime soon. The reality of it all was daunting but Fayiz and Nuha knew that their focus had to be on their son. One of the first things they did was to make Obie understand what was going on with him. They tried their best to explain to him what the tests were for and the medicine he was taking.

SmileURBlessed is one of the support groups that provide smiles to different pediatric cancer wards in Riyadh through fun activities, gifts and awareness campaigns.

At the onset of his journey, the doctor advised that Obie’s head be shaved, since hair loss was one of the possible effects of his chemotherapy. While this may seem like the simplest issue at hand, it an unforgettable experience for a boy who loves his hair and his family:

“Obie is the kind of kid who likes to dress up and he had beautiful thick curls,” Fayiz fondly describes his son. “We asked for his permission to shave it off and after some convincing, he agreed.”

Getting the deed done was not as difficult compared to what happened after. “I want my hair back, mama. Put it back,” said Obie as he looked at the mirror. Upon hearing this, Fayiz immediately picked up the razor, sat down in front of Obie and told him to shave his head too.

The two took a selfie together to commemorate the father and son moment. Much to their surprise, when Fayiz uploaded the photo on social media, it went viral and prompted the trending of the hashtag: #Smile4Obie.

Fayiz admits that one of the ways he found to cope with Obie’s cancer was to share their

experience online, mostly to raise awareness. While he had only asked for folks to support through words of encouragement and for bald people to send them photos so they can share it with Obie, followers took it a step further.

In the days that followed, strangers, including those who had hair started to share their photos of getting their head shaved with Obie, a response unprecedented in Saudi Arabia. From within the Kingdom and outside, videos, images and fan signs started to pop up in support of Obie’s fight.

While she is a private person by nature, Nuha created the Smile4Obie account on Instragram to chronicle Obie’s fight against cancer. Their intention is mainly to raise awareness for children’s cancer and shed some light on what parents, loved ones and the patients are going through.

I had the opportunity to accompany Nuha and Obie for his treatment at King Fahd Children’s Cancer Center. She has not left her son’s side from Day One and as Fayiz has accurately put it, a strong woman who has taken charge of their battle with cancer.

“When cancer strikes, it doesn’t just affect the person who has it. It’s something that impacts the whole family,” says Nuha. “Admittedly, we feel blessed for having the medical training to keep up and know what’s going on.”

While they still have three years of treatment to go through, the last six months have already been an enlightening experience so far for Obie and his family. Being asked at what lessons they’ve drawn out of their battle so far, the two replied,“We are now living one day at a time. When something like this happens to you, it’s life changing. You learn to appreciate every moment. You gain perspective as to what truly matters.”

Dr. Sami Al Otaibi, founder of SmileURBlessed, fondly called "Dr. Underpants" by Obie. He's Obie and Malak's favorite storyteller.

Nuha tries to give people an update of their battle against Obie's cancer through the @smile4obie account on Instagram.

In 2010, Humans of New York sparked a creative movement that spread worldwide. Simply put, the project aimed to capture the lives of its city’s inhabitants through photography. The concept eventually found its way to our capital through an expat photographer responsible for creating “Humans of Riyadh.”

Can you tell us about yourself and what camera you use?I’m Terence, and I can be really awkward at times.

I could really relate to the quote that he shared. He was amazed by what I was doing, especially since I’m an expat. He thought it was the kind of project a local would or should be doing. Later on, I found out that he also writes, and he wrote about me and posted it on his blog. We actually got along well.

Have you faced challenges trying to do street photography in the city?

Thinking about doing street photography in the city is already a challenge. Knowing Riyadh is a very conservative community; you cannot go out there and take photos just like that. I am set to break the boundaries of religion, culture and tradition. So I really need to be aware of the consequences. I also heard about the not so new law that it’s okay to snap photos of iconic places for the purpose of promoting tourism but I’m snapping photos of faces, which can be controversial to some.

To my surprise, I haven’t encountered any problems so far while doing the project. Hopefully I won’t. What I’m actually doing is also known as street portrait photography, I guess asking permission to take someone’s portrait helps to NOT get me into trouble.

What made you decide to create Humans of Riyadh? I just had to do it. The decision came from the fact that I love learning more about other cultures and knowing Riyadh has a very diverse community. Coupled with my enthusiasm in photography it just really pushed me to do it. It was not until July 2013 that I decided to really start Humans of Riyadh. I did a quick search to see if Humans of Riyadh already exists and found out no one has started yet. And so I did.

Who’s been your favorite subject so far? What was his story?

There was this guy whom I took photo of, he was fine with having his portrait taken. He was more amazed at the follow-up question where I asked if he could share something that inspires him, and he said, using an oft-told quote:

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”

I’m an introvert but I try to put myself out there and be social sometimes. I’m passionate about photography. I like being able to capture an image and go back to it over and over again. I’m currently using a digital SLR camera with a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Page 34: DR Issue 21

How do you approach people when you try to get their photos? Do you ask for their permission? Has anyone ever refused?

With a smile, I come up to the person and say hello. I would ask if they could spare me a minute or two. It’s very important that they are aware that I’m taking a portrait of them; so asking for their permission is a must. I even resort to sign language sometimes because of the language barrier. Yes, there have been encounters wherein someone refused. What’s surprising is that I didn’t get that many rejections. Two out of three it’s a yes.

Who is Nora?Well, I’m a musician that is still a work in process. I am 25, from Saudi Arabia, but lived abroad most of my life (Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Dubai). I’m not really sure what’s next, but a change is a-coming, for sure.

What kiNd of music do you make aNd What iNflueNced that?Mostly I make soul/R&B music that borrows a lot of elements from hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, blues, etc. The reason why I love these particular genres is because they have so much soul and groove, while still relatable.

hoW loNg have you beeN makiNg music aNd What made you start?I started singing from a very young age, when I was in middle school. I also have a background in piano, guitar, jazz and music theory because most of the schools I went to heavily supported the arts.

Nora, a Saudi singer based in Dubai, is a rare breed. Saudi Arabia is not known for its women pop artists, making Nora something of an anomaly. She took the indie route to discover the music world on her own. We caught up with Nora in Dubai for an interesting one-on-one chat.

Saudi Female SingerS: rare gemS

Singing was honestly a gift, it came very naturally to me. But I did experiment with opera singing in university, which allowed me to learn about my voice and how to use it more formally. In the last four to five years, I’ve started experimenting with songwriting and music production. But it’s still a struggle for me.

have you faced aNy criticism or aNy Negative commeNts from people iN ksa? I have had very positive feedback from people in Saudi Arabia. My family is not too keen on me doing music though. They are supportive of it as a hobby, but they don’t feel comfortable with me performing live and making too much noise about it. But I do anyway.

talk to us a little bit about your day job.I work at WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), an international environmental

NGO that works on environmental conservation and climate change issues. I am a communications officer there, and it’s my job to make sure people understand what we do and how it affects them. It’s great because it’s for a positive cause.

What is your opiNioN oN music you hear comiNg out from jeddah, from the hip-hop aNd r&b sceNe, that is?The scene in Saudi has been really impressing me! There are so many artists working together and supporting each other, creating quality music. It honestly blows my mind and they deserve way more credit, platforms and opportunities. I hope to see some more female musicians in the future, though.

What do you thiNk is holdiNg the music sceNe back?I think that lack of interest within the wider community holds musicians back,

especially in genres like hip-hop. There is a lack of platforms for artists to just go out and enjoy themselves. We kind of have to rely on big companies or brands to give us that opportunity, as opposed to some other places in the world where you can just go to an open mic and do your thing.

Would you be opeN to sigN a music deal? Not really at this point. Like I said, I do music for me. And it's not really a career option at the moment.

aNy last Words? The music coming out of the Middle East makes me proud. It makes me feel happy that a lot of the people I look up to musically and those who are breaking musical barriers and creating new experimental genres are people from here. And I'm very grateful to have access to them for knowledge-sharing and support.

even proven it’s the most important meal in your routine, as it affects your energy and brain activity levels.

1- ladureeStarting with the most expensive option available, Laduree is best known for their macarons and their pastel packaging. We think they should also be known for their breakfast because their french toast is top notch. We also recommend the basic club and the eggs benedict. Stay away from the hot chocolate, though, it’s too bitter/heavy for an empty stomach.

TIp: their sandwich portions are huge, so feel free to cut down on the calories and share. We are trying to be healthy here, after all.

3- piattoA newcomer on the breakfast scene, we were pleasantly surprised with Piatto. The menu is limited and we weren’t sure what kind of breakfast the Italian favorite would be cooking up, but once the dishes were served we were sold. Their eggs are fluffy, the french toast great, and they served the yummiest blueberry muffin loaf on this side of Riyadh. They also offer quiche, which if you happen to be a certain rat creature, you will be delighted with.

TIp: the service in piatto panorama mall is brilliant and the kitchen doesn’t close for prayer until they’ve served your order.

alternative: Kitchenation

This is our personal favorite, as the morning food in Bateel is unparalleled anywhere else in the city. They use fresh organic ingredients and everything feels like it was prepared just for you. Best of all is that the food has a Saudi twist to it. Presentation is pretty too. We absolutely love their Eggs Benedict, and the Arabian set menu (grilled halloum, fool, pita bread and labnah, etc.) is also recommended.

TIp: their chocolate milk comes in two parts, chocolate disks and hot milk. and it’s super fun to mix it together.

4- bab alyemeNSimple ingredients with the right mixture of spices and cooking style, plus a healthy preference for breads and cakes, make for a brilliant combination. Plus, everything is served wonderfully in small typical metal cooking pans. And their traditional Yemeni bread is so good you’ll be coming back for thirds! In conclusion, should you be looking for a traditional Khaleeji type breakfast, Bab Alyemen is the place to go.

7- kuduPerennial cheap favorite of a lot of Riyadhis who regularly eat out for breakfast, Kudu is a must-add to any LOCAL breakfast list. It’s quick, it’s everywhere and it doesn’t cost much. Their club sandwich is the best value for money in town. We love the steak and eggs as well, and for a quick waffle fix, theirs isn’t bad. And the hash browns are actually quite good.

TIp: set the hash browns on a napkin to drain the oil first, so you don’t clog your arteries.

Ah, the ubiquitous entry on our list. The ultimate superfood of Riyadh. The mountain of gold that will fill your stomach up and keep your body healthy and satisfied for the rest of your day. Fool. Oh, how we love you, fool, and your kind wonderful friend, tamees. How we love that you feed so many on SR 2. Oh, did we forget to mention that? Yep. You heard correctly. The cheapest option on our list really is cheap, as foul will only cost you SR 2, and a large round piece of tamees goes for SR 1, all freshly made. The best part? There’s a Fawwal or two in almost every neighborhood, making this the most convenient option on this list.

TIp: personally, we’re fans of gulabah more than the basic fool. pair them with falafel for an utterly perfect meal.

Okay, we lied. Fatburger wasn’t the only black sheep. We had another one, and it goes by the name of Herfy Café and Grill. You get why we were so very doubtful, no? It’s like telling us Altazaj opened a fancy restaurant that specialized in chanterelle mushrooms. But we tried it nonetheless, and as with Fatburger, we were pleasantly surprised. The seating still retains the air of a fast-food joint that spruced up a bit, but their portions are generous and food-wise it wasn’t half bad, especially for the price. They also benefit from the fact that Herfy has a line of bakeries to its name, as the croissants and muffins were good.

TIp: save calories and money and share one of their set menus, as one order is good enough for two people.

9- fatburger We won’t lie to you, Fatburger was the only black sheep on our list. I mean, there’s burger in the name! How well can a burger joint (and an unpopular one in Riyadh at that) pull off decent breakfast? Even though we showed up pretty skeptical, we left happy. Their pancakes were great! As was their omelet and their french toast. And the best part? Since people have yet to discover that Fatburger has breakfast, the place was absolutely EMPTY. Which is always a plus in our socially awkward eyes. Portions are huge, so feel free to share.

TIp: the tables in the back are open seating and there’s a large window that lets in natural light, if you’re the sort who needs airy spaces.

alternative: Johnny Rockets

Ah, IKEA. Is there nothing they don’t do perfectly? One of these days we’re going to find a way to accidentally get locked in there, you just wait and see. And it’ll make for the most epic article ever (Beloved IKEA, take a hint). IKEA’s lunch is already a tradition with furniture-searching Riyadhis, but did you know they had breakfast as well? And, as with everything else they have, it’s pretty neat. The cafeteria setup just makes sense, and the croissant is a great pair with the beef bacon and sausages.

how to shop and Not let your Wallet dropBy Johara Al MogbelThere is no place on earth more underrated than the supermarket. Seriously. Think about it, where else would you find carbs, protein, magic liquid (chocolate milk), vitamins, a fresh deli, shampoo, electronics, and occasionally clothes, all under one roof? It’s like Narnia! It’s like IKEA! Well. An IKEA without the furniture, that is. Nothing’s perfect. And you know what’s the best thing about it? Well, dwellers of Riyadh, here are a not-so-well-kept secret: We happen to be blessed with one of the cheapest grocery shopping this side of a planet! Fill up two carts and it won’t come close to half a trolley in Paris or London. Trust us. And to help you make the most of it, here’s nifty guide to navigating the food aisles of our lovely capital city!

don’t stick to one supermarket. It can be easy to get used to a certain place, especially when it’s the closest one to your house, but if you’re looking to save shopping around can be worth the extra miles and gas. Especially when it comes to cleaning tools and imported products.

for example: We’ve found certain French biscuits in Panda that were triple the amount in danube, and snack Pack pudding that was two times cheaper in danube than it was in Panda. Between danube, Panda, and Tamimi, we’ll think you’ll find something worth buying. There’s also al Othaim, Lulu’s, Carrefour and al sadhan, but Carrefour has downsized their outlets in the past few years, and Lulu’s specializes in imported.

do your homework. It pays to compare prices beforehand, quite literally. The most popular way to do

this is to check the bargain offers booklet every supermarket distributes, but you can also do this online.

Panda, danube and al-Othaim all have frequently updated websites detailing their products, and al-Othaim even offers online shopping. and do the math on bundled sale items, as occasionally the offer is either the same price or even more expensive than what the normal product goes for in other places.

buy generic brand or local products. Why pay full price for something just for the name it has stuck on it when you could get it cheaper and at the same quality? Panda’s hazelnut spread tastes just the same as Nutella’s, and it’s the cheapest option we’ve found in Riyadh thus far. They have an excellent range of other food and cleaning products as well. Danube’s hamburger bread is made fresh in their bakery and is the same price as other factory made burger buns, etc. And it’s the same with local products.

Buying local means that the taxes and shipping costs imported products carry will be dropped, so it much much cheaper. and in most instances the quality is better.

avoid baqalas (mini-markets) like the plague.Yes, they’re convenient and yes, sometimes it’s easier to just pick up your things from a shop across the road, but in the long run it’s more expensive. Convenience stores don’t have the same amount of traffic large supermarkets get so they can’t buy in bulk, hence slightly higher prices, and foodstuffs are usually just at the brink of expiration. Not to mention, there is no variety to speak of.

The only reason anyone interested in savvy grocery shopping should go into a baqalah is to get ice or to buy hard-to-find Baboo popsicle sticks. (Nostalgic food is the best.)

check food expiration dates.Okay, so mini-markets aren’t the only ones guilty of a little so-close-to-expiration-it’s-one-pod-away-from-a-mold-invasion selling. Sometimes supermarkets do it too. Especially on Buy One Get One Free offers. The super cheap imported cookie dough for SR 10 may look irresistible now, but are

you sure you’ll be able to finish it in a week? (Correct answer: Yes.).

make use of the ministry of commerce’s phone applications.Sometimes supermarkets slip up, and shady sales techniques are used or expired food is sold. Don’t let it slide! Take a picture of the price transgression and sent it to the Ministry through their handy apps, or to Riyadh’s Municipality if it was expired or mishandled food.

The more people that report infringements, the less corporations will be okay with committing them.

always tip the bagging guy, especially if he pushed your cart for you to your car.In terms of budgeting this isn’t a very good tip, but humanity-wise it’ll make the world a better place. Especially since baggers normally have low salaries. Plus, if you think of it in monetary value, SR 5 (the lowest decent tip) is basically just two Twixes for you. What’s two Twixes in the light of possibly influencing the financial situation of a man or a woman for the better?

Oh! and thank your cashiers. saying thank you is free, and it’s not their fault if the line is long, or if the prices are mixed up.

By Nada Al MegbilJuicing has become one of the fastest growing trends. It has been assumed to be as nearly miraculous for just about everything from losing weight to preventing cancer. Juicing companies are dancing in money and celebrities are advertising the juice craze. While moderately health-conscious people have been popping

raspberries and wheatgrass into their juicers; for others this has become a way of life. Juicing and juicing fasts have some health benefits but it’s not as all-powerful

as most people suggest, even health miracles have their drawbacks. So, is it health or hype?

So, the queStion iSto juice or not to juice?

if you decide to start juicing and you follow it all the way through,

you’ll probably feel a sense of accomplishment and the impression of freeing yourself from the control

cravings had over you. You’ll be receiving the recommended servings of

fruits and veggies, if not more. But if you’re going through with this, make it short. it’s not healthy or fun to restrict

your body from the other nutritious kinds of food it needs.

Juice diets help you lose calories.

fActSurprisingly, juicing fasts can be high in calorie content. Why? Because when you juice you are creating a concentrated version of the food that is low calorie. In order to gain the drink, you need a bunch of fruit and vegetables to get the juice and ironically the juice itself is what’s the highest in sugar. This can be dangerous for those with blood sugar problems and can lead to weight gain.

Juice fasts detox your body.

fActIt sounds pretty convincing but there’s no such thing, not for a juice diet or any other type of detox diet. The fact is our body does this already; our liver, kidneys and intestines filter the unwanted things we ingest and expel them through urine, bowel movements, breath and sweat. We don’t need to go through restricting ourselves to juice-only diets to eliminate the junk we’ve consumed.

Substituting fresh juice for food, gives the

digestive system a break while still providing the essential nutrients you

need for energy. fAct

Relying only on fruit juices may be a disappointment because they don’t have enough of a variety of nutrients and they lack bulk. This makes fasters feel hungrier instead of providing them with the fulfilling energy.

MYth #5

Juicing is more beneficial than eating fruits and

vegetables.fAct

Fiber in the fruit aids digestion, helps in keeping you regular and has the potential to prevent colon cancer, among many more benefits. When relying on juice to get your daily dose of fruit, you do not get this benefit. Without fiber in the diet, constipation, weight gain, blood sugar fluctuations, tiredness and nausea are inevitable, therefore sipping on juice from your stylish mason jars won’t equate to gaining the same nutrition as simply eating your fruits and vegetables.

MYth #2:

MYth #3:MYth #1:

Extended juice fasts are healthy for the body,

long-term wise.fAct

The negative health consequences of an extended juice diet are shocking. They include stoma chaches, hair-loss and the wearing down of enamel on your teeth. This occurs because a lot of fruit is high in acid and sugar. This allows you to be more susceptible to ruining your teeth, this causes as much havoc as sodas because of the high sugar content.

Not just because you really need to fit into those size skeleton jeans you have stashed in the back of your closet (on the off-chance you

morph into a model overnight), but because a little movement in your life can go a long way in your health. And that’s doubly important

when one lives in a largely car-dependent country. And guess what? You can fix your lumps and lungs without ending up like a sputtering

car in the middle of the highway with a busted engine! Without further ado, here are some effective ways you could work out without

feeling like you’ve just been hit with a cement truck.

tabata TRAININGTabata training is a method of workout that spans four minutes. Yeah, you read that right, four minutes. The idea is you work in increments, 20 seconds of intense movement and then 10 seconds of rest, in a total of eight sessions. The beauty of this workout is that it basically takes less time than it does to scroll down your twitter timeline, but at the same time, you’re working out daily, which does wonders for your muscles. Even more so than doing one giant workout once a week and then neglecting your body the rest of the days. Fit it into your before-going-to-bed routine to make it easier to stick to. For a tabata timer, search your app store. There’s a great one for IOS.

Tip For each session, do a different move. Say, fast squats for 20 seconds, and break. Then punches, then knee raises, then stomach crunching, then jumping jacks.

And that’s it for now! The only piece of advice left is, reading this article won’t burn you any calories so get up and get used to a routine and get moving!

YOU HAVE NO EXCUSES LEFT.

THE100 REP CHALLENGE This is the best secret we’ve ever picked up from our frequent forays into the crazy world that is those scarily fit people’s utopia. It gives your muscles a really decent

workout, burns calories, and is flexible enough to suit whatever body part you want to sculpt. And it doesn’t hurt at all.

Also, if you’re doing it alone, with a partner, or by yourself, go through the moves on a steadily increasing scale of 10s. So, using the previous list as an example (and without a partner), your workout would look like this:• 10 squats

• 10 squats + 10 bicycle crunches

• 10 squats + 10 bicycle crunches + 10 bicep curls

• 10 squats + 10 bicycle crunches + 10 bicep curls + 10 lunges

With a partner, the only difference is it goes like: you squat 10, stop and wait for your partner to squat 10. Then you squat 10 and do 10 bicycle crunches, and then stop and it’s their turn. By the end you’d have done 100 squats.

ADHD is defined as a neurological disorder that affects children and leads to excessive movement, impulsivity and distraction. Recent medical studies reveal that an estimate of 1.6 million Saudi children suffer from

the disorder. So what is it exactly?

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G

Page 63: DR Issue 21

DESTINATION RIYADH 61

We all know that kids have their moments of playfulness and at times, even rowdiness. We often say that it’s all part of being — well, kids. When there are children who can’t sit still, who never seem to listen, who don’t follow instructions, follow through anything or who blurt out inappropriate things at inappropriate times more often than not, some people simply conclude that they’re “hyper” or spoiled troublemakers. However, before reaching that conclusion, consider this: they may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

According to AFTA, the Saudi ADHD society, ADHD is a neurological disorder that affects children and leads to excessive movement, impulsivity and distraction. These effects continue with them until adulthood, although the symptoms may vary from person to person.

According to Reach2Change, an ADHD support organization, there are three major signs and symptoms of ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

“It’s important to note that these symptoms maybe noticed in individuals without the disorder over a period of time,” said Reem Al Jizawi, Reach2Change ADHD coach. “However, people with ADHD would have a feeling of continuous struggle and the symptoms have a debilitating effect on their lives as well as their relationships.”

THE THREE MAJOR SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADHDINATTENTION

• Doesn’t pay attention to details

• Makes careless mistakes• Easily distracted

and has trouble maintaining focus

• Frequently loses or misplaces books, homework, toys etc

• Spaces out frequently within a conversation or appear to not listen when spoken to

• Disorganized and has difficulty planning and remembering things or completing a task

HYPERACTIVITY • Constant fidgeting• Consistently unable to sit

still even when instructed to stay in one’s seat i.e. classroom setting

• Moves around constantly and excessively, runs and climbs inappropriately

• Talks excessively • Has difficulty relaxing

or playing quietly• Unable to hold emotions in

check, prone to tantrums

• May have a quick temper

IMPULSIVITY• Acts without thinking• Constantly blurts out

what they want to say in class before being called by the teacher

• Inability to wait for one’s turn in games and activities

• Consistently interrupts

MYTHKids with ADHD can’t

pay attention.

FACT They can focus

if they enjoy the activities they’re doing or are interested

in what they are hearing or seeing. It’s when the task is repetitive or boring that

they quickly tune out.

There’s still a widespread misconception that ADHD is a modern illness with pharmaceutical fad propaganda at its roots. Unfortunately, there’s also a flawed social stigma that boxes ADHD as a socially constructed disorder made as an excuse for bad parenting. In reality, the causes of ADHD are genes. Ninety-two percent of recorded cases cite genetics as a primary cause.

NEUROLOGICAL REASONS SUCH AS:• Infections during pregnancy,

childbirth or the first few months after birth.

• Lack of oxygen.• Brain inflammation.• Drinking alcohol

during pregnancy.• Smoking during pregnancy.• Chemical imbalance in

terms of dopamine and noradrenaline in the frontal section of the brain has shown links to ADHD.

HEADACHESHeadaches are one of the most common complaints and can range from mild to debilitating. Your first port of call for recurring and unbearable headaches is a doctor to rule out anything serious, but for a general headache, instead of popping a pill, why not try some henna? That’s right, henna. The thing mostly associated with weddings and Eid parties can also be used to cure your headache! (It could be argued that a wedding could be the cause of your headache, but anyway). Henna* has a cooling effect, so is most effective for headaches caused by heat, fever and too much exposure to the sun.

*Be warned though, that henna is a dye, so it may leave your forehead/scalp an interesting color for a few days.

The last time you had a headache, what was the first thing you did? Reach for two tablets of Paracetamol? Well, you

approved by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). All remedies mentioned have been taken from the book

DiArRHEAInterestingly enough, fast-food can be the cause of constipation, and it can also be the cause of its polar opposite – diarrhea! Usually, it is the body’s way of ridding harmful substances from the stomach. It can also be caused by stress or if it is frequent, there may be an underlying health issue. A person experiencing diarrhea must rehydrate as much as possible as the body can very quickly become dehydrated. This is of even more importance in a hot climate such as that in Saudi. There are numerous rehydrating solutions available from the local pharmacy, but why not give honey a try? We could fill this entire issue listing the benefits of honey as it truly is a superfood, but one of the many uses of it as mentioned by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is to relieve diarrhea.

*Continue drinking a few glasses a day until symptoms disappear.

CouGHA cough is a way for your body to rid itself of substances that are irritating the air passageways. Coughs are mostly dealt with using over-the-counter cough syrups, all claiming to relieve a cough within days. However, studies show that most cough syrups neither help nor hinder a cough. Our favorite superfood, honey, makes another appearance here. Sunnah solution A teaspoon of honey before bed can help to relieve a cough.

The focus, though, is not on honey for treatment this time, but instead on pomegranate.* Sunnah solution This luscious, beautiful red fruit can help a cough, either through eating the seeds fresh, or running them through a juicer to create sweet, fresh juice.*

*Steer clear from shop-bought juices as they are usually pasteurised with preservatives and sweeteners added, and thus not very effective.

So there we have it. A few natural remedies taken from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) for some common complaints. Before you reach for over-the-counter remedies, perhaps you could give one of these a try!

ConstiPATIONFeeling a little “bunged up,” to put it politely? A person is officially constipated if they have had less than three bowel movements in the space of a week. Fast food, and its lack of fibre and nutrients, is one of the biggest contributors to this irritating ailment and there are plenty of fast-food joints around town! On the whole, it’s not a serious condition, but can be very uncomfortable, not to mention embarrassing when you’re with company. There are numerous remedies to relieve constipation, ranging from increasing water intake to indulging in fibrous foods such as dates.

Cupping therapy, locally known as Hijamah (pronounced Hujama), is a form of alternative medicine in which local suction is created on the skin in order to remove toxic or bad blood from the body.

According to a hadith narrated by Jaabir, the Prophet (pbuh) said, “if there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire, as appropriate to the cause of illness, but I would not like to be cauterized.” (Reported by Al Bukhaari, 10/139).“The best times to be treated with cupping are the seventeenth, nineteenth or twenty-first of the month.” – The Prophet (pbuh), reported by Al Tirmidhi

BENEFITS OF HIJAMAH:• Promotes flow of energy

in the blood.• Removes toxins and waste

minerals from the blood.• Prevents diseases.

Note: Approximately 70 percent of diseases are caused by the failure of blood circulation throughout the body.

nutrition LABELS

The use of preservatives and food additives is prevalent in packaged foods sold in supermarkets today … how can we

know what to avoid, and what to get more of?

1. START HERECheck the servingsize and the number of servings per container. Ask yourself: How many servings am I consuming? This will help you adjust the information from the rest of the label to your eating habits.

4. THE NUTRIENTS (PART 2) Make sure you get enough of these nutrients. Vitamins, calcium and iron can help keep you healthy, and prevent diseases.

By Lena Obaid

2. CALORIES (AND CALORIES FROM FAT) This is the amount of calories in the serving size (mentioned in 1). “Calories from Fat” shows how many calories are taken from the fat component of the food. Generally: 40 calories is low, 100 is moderate, 400 is high.

3. THE NUTRIENTS These are usually the nutrients that we consume too much. Limit your intake of these nutrients — too much of them isn’t healthy. (Nutritionists recommend that you keep Cholesterol and Trans Fat intake to a minimum.)

5. PERCENT DAILY VALUES (These are based on a 2,000-calorie diet). Looking at these numbers can help you see how much of your recommended daily intake you are getting per nutrient in each serving of the food you eat. As a general rule, 5 percent DV or less is low, 20 percent DV or more is high.

By Rushda AbrahamThe inability to cope with frustrating moments in life can possibly lead to burnout and depression. Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental fatigue caused by excessive stress. It develops when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet demands. As the burnout continues, you may loose the motivation that led you to undertake on a certain role in the first place.

yourself beyond limits

Some personality traits that can contribute to burnout are perfectionism, a pessimistic view of yourself and the world around you, and having a high achieving personality. Is your target to live a well-balanced life? A lifestyle where you reach success in your field and are emotionally present, and actually involved, in the lives of your loved ones? If so, then

achieving inner balance should be your guide. Read on for steps on getting out of burnout.

PhysIcal ExErcIsEThe World Health Organization warns that by 2020, burnout and depression will be the second leading cause of death and disability in the world — mainly due to more stressful

lifestyles, violence and poverty. Exercise helps us deal with a stressful situation and it prepares us to better cope with future burnout and fight depression. In 1999, four health-related studies were conducted at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The research studied how regular exercise changes physiological responses to

stress from the brain, hormonal system and immune system. The results showed that regular exercise helps to reduce the negative effects of burnout and to improve the immune system. As we know, exposure to mental or physical stress increases our susceptibility to illness.

sPIrItual ExErcIsESad moments and misery are among major causes of burnout. Fortunately, Islam holds the answers to every worldly problem. Spiritual exercise is always the best way for a productive Muslim to fight any unpleasant state of mind and body, including burnout. The essential factor is an optimistic view of the self and the world. This is necessary to release us from such a state of burnout and any stressful situation.Remember that the Prophet (pbuh) related that Allah (swt) said, “I am with my slave’s thoughts about Me, so let him think of Me as he chooses.” The hadith emphasizes the importance of positive thinking in life.

The nature of this worldly life makes it impossible for human beings not to be intruded with some kind of adversity. This is a part of life. Realizing that any unpleasant moments or hardship strengthens our hearts, atones for our sins and helps to suppress an inclination towards pride and haughtiness will relieve our mind.

Furthermore, there are numerous scientific findings on the relationship between mental health and religion. Thayer, Newman and McClain (1994) found that religiosity and spiritual strategies were particularly effective for reducing burnout, nervousness, tension and anxiety. Moreover, it loaded on a pleasant distraction factor that was found to be the most effective strategy for mood change.

If you sense that you suffer from burnout, first of all, stop insisting of yourself to keep going. Start listening to your body, and it will tell you what it needs. Take on some of the strategies mentioned above and keep the faith that Allah (swt) is the best disposer of all human affairs.

As a Productive Muslim, how do you fight burnout? What tweaks and positive habits in your life help you maintain a balanced lifestyle?

By 2020,

takE BrEaks BEtwEEn BIg tasksBurnout leads your body and mind to a weakened situation. It’s important to avoid jumping from one stressful, time-consuming task to the next. Give your body and mind time to recover. Without such a recovery you’re placing a burden on your mind and body without having a chance to recharge, it’s exhausting!

Physical exercise, on the other hand, can help keep stress levels under control.

There is definitely something very Central Perk about Park South Hotel’s breakfast bar; good coffee on tap, comfy seating, homely and staring out onto a Manhattan street, it’s almost like the beginning of a decent US sitcom. It is in fact the perfect start to four exciting days exploring television’s most famous city, New York.

My guide to America’s “unofficial capital” is actually my wife, who qualifies by virtue of the fact that she possesses an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the city, weaned from hours of watching Big Apple-based films and TV shows.

Already, as we go over the itinerary, places are being introduced as “that cafe in the area where Carrie first met Mr. Big” (ala “Sex in the City”) and “You know, where Ross and Rachel ...” But in all honesty, I didn’t mind this one bit, that’s what New York is all about, right? Hell, I was still having trouble trying to stop myself yelling “are you talking to me?!?” in a faux American accent at every passing taxi driver.

Of course, New York is much more than a mere “pop culture pilgrimage” and with my extremely well-informed guide leading the way, I was able to get well and truly under the skin of the world’s second most exciting city (oh please! I’m a Londoner).

APPLEYORKText and photography by Tharik HussainThe whiff of a toasted blueberry bagel hangs delicately in the air before mingling with the rich, full-bodied aroma of coffee made from freshly ground Columbian beans. Outside, pedestrians in long overcoats hurry past the large oak French doors and the sunshine bounces off parked yellow taxis. A warm fire flickers beside me. I grab my large coffee cup with two hands and snuggle into the cozy, green armchair. In my head, The Rembrandts are singing “I’ll Be There For You.”

vintAgE MARKETS“They’re not what they used to be” was the impression we came away with having spent ages traipsing around trying to locate the tiny Hell’s Kitchen flea market (clearly these days the “flea” refers to its size rather than the condition of the goods on sale). When we eventually found the handful of stalls selling the usual collection of trendy clothes, old cameras, US licence plates and junk jewelery, it was on a spot the market seemed to be clinging onto. All around, huge scary machinery stared down at it like mafia bosses in an old Bronx movie, just waiting to pounce.

For a better retro hit and a far more interesting architectural experience head for the old Williamsburg Savings Bank in Brooklyn. One of the tallest four-sided clock towers in the world, the building is topped with a dome that has earned it the childishly giggly title of “New York’s most exuberant phallic symbol” (AIA Guide to New York). After deciding if

you agree or not – or simply falling about laughing, head inside where during the winter months you will find the Brooklyn Flea Market.

Whether you’re buying or just browsing, the market is a great place to stroll around and appreciate the curiosities on display. We spotted Masonic chairs, ancient New York photos and a classic American diner lampshade before heading down into the bank’s original vault – complete with reinforced steel doors – where we enjoyed delicious tacos from the gourmet food market. (West 39th Street between 9th and 10th avenues for Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market and One Hanson Place in Winter or 176 Lafayette Ave. in the Summer for the Brooklyn Flea Market)

ON TOP of THE WORLDAbsolutely nowhere is more famous for skyscrapers than New York City and nobody should pass up the opportunity to take in the iconic views from atop one of the many tall buildings that open their doors to paying publicans.

Cleverly, to avoid the queues at the more conventional spots like the Empire State building, my very sensible guide took us to the quieter and cheaper, yet equally impressive, “Top of the Rock” experience. It’s awfully romantic on the 70th floor of the Rockefeller Center where you can admire the world’s most famous skyline up close and personal without having to fight a zillion selfie-taking tourists. And that’s not even the best thing about this whole experience.

That happens later in the day when you meet a fellow tourist and are quite suddenly overcome by a warm sense of smugness as you listen to how the claustrophobia of maddening crowds at the Empire State almost led them to commit murder on the 52nd floor. The smug feeling will be complete once you have asked them how much they paid and walk off tutting (and $10 better off!). (45 Rockefeller Plaza between Avenue of the Americas and 5th Avenue)

GETTING HigHFor many years the disused freight train tracks between the Meatpacking District and West 34th Street, sat rotting high above the city. Now it is the High Line, one of the quirkiest and most beautiful urban walkways. The height of the original railway line provides a strange but interesting vantage to admire the city from, allowing you to stroll around peering nosily into people’s apartments. When you’ve had quite enough of that, you could enjoy the variety of art installations now lining the walkway from tiny ape sculptures and painted oriental heads to huge splintered mirror walls. These are complemented well by carefully planted trees, bushes and tall grass that attract urban wildlife.

Some of the wider sections of the path double up as venues for open-air entertainment and seasonal events. The real charm of this ‘‘new’’ New York feature is how the clichéd gritty, harsh, overhead train line of so many ‘80s movies that were set in the ‘‘ghettos’’ has been transformed into something pretty and wholly inoffensive. You probably didn’t see that coming when you were watching New Jack City. (The High Line starts either at Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District or West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th avenues) Crowds can get a bit thick at

Halal Trucks

HAlAl NEW YORKIf the visibility of “halal’’ food trucks is anything to go by, then despite the post 9/11 hostilities and the Ground Zero issues, the Muslims of New York are thriving. No matter what corner of Manhattan you stop at to try and decode the endless grid of avenues and streets on your map, look over your shoulder and there will be a smiling Muslim serving up a tasty shawarma or falafel wrap.

Even when you jump off the main island and head to residential boroughs like Brooklyn, heavily-bearded Muslims can be seen strolling to local mosques and popping into halal grocers, while loudly greeting each other with an “assalamualaikum akhih!” “It was tough, after 9/11, I didn’t want to come out of my house for several weeks because I was so scared of what might happen, but slowly New Yorkers showed what they are really made of and they realised that we are just like them and not to blame for all this crazy stuff,”

said a Pakistani cab driver as I sat next to him in the Haandi restaurant on Lexington Avenue. The front of this tiny eatery is always lined with yellow taxis, many of which are owned by Muslims of South Asian descent who know that the Haandi – which means cooking pot – is one of the best places to grab yourself a delicious curry cooked in that rare homemade style. It’s not much to look at, in fact it’s lack of concern for interior design will whisk you straight

by the queue of hipsters and stroller-pushing yummy mummies (maybe even the odd celebrity) waiting for a table. After you’ve finished tucking into your pricey but delicious NY brunch, pop down to the basement, where you can pull monkey-faces in a vintage black and white photo booth. (120 Hudson St., Tribeca)

BIG APPLE brunCH“Brunch” is that increasingly trendy meal eaten between breakfast and lunch. In New York, a brunch is a mix of sweet and sour favorites, usually involving eggs, bagels and pancakes and fast becoming an institution.

To indulge in such a cornerstone of Big Apple culture, my guide decided it was only right to seek out a worthy venue. That venue was Bubbys in Tribeca, a former pie-making kitchen whose name means ‘‘grandma’’ in Yiddish. My brunch platter had a toasted bagel topped with eggs on it, and then there were sides of fried potatoes, beans, a grapefruit and an orange. This was all accompanied by copious refills of coffee. Sitting on the corner of a smart looking residential street in this now uber-trendy district, Bubbys can be recognized

After hours of exhilarating driving, we reached the city of Najran. The roadside palm groves were replaced by concrete villas. The desert, too, proved elusive soon after. Najran is a bustling and growing city. Typical malls and commercial centers dotted the main roads with residential apartments sprawling behind them. We asked locals for directions, but many seemed to be unaware of the place. Just when we were giving up hope, we met a local who told us about a palace in the old part of the city – he wasn’t aware of its name, though.Once in the old city, it seemed like everyone knew the Amarah Palace; like they took pride in it.We were able to spot the gargantuan walls of the palace from a distance. We parked our car and made our way through the porch that was decorated with phoenix palm trees. Through the massive reinforced wooden doors we entered and reached the courtyard of the palace. A local SCTA staff was onsite and advised us to begin from our right, so we followed his orders and first reached a mosque. The palace is well garrisoned with keeps on each of its four corners. I tried climbing one but was only able to reach midway as the upper portion of the keep wasn’t accessible. Nonetheless from where I stood, I had a good view of the palace.

amarah PalacESouth Arabia’s Rich Royal Past

By Mohammed MirzaIt was one of those unforgiving hot summer days, but we still decided to travel to one of the hottest places in the country – Najran. The Amarah Palace, which imposingly stands in the South Arabian city, is what made us take the journey on a scorching hot day.

The palace was built in 1940 as the seat of

the municipality and court.

Part of the palace was allocated for the prince

and his family while another was for his

guards. It was planned and built under the

supervision of Prince Turki bin Mohammed,

the former prince of the Najran region.

However, just 17 years after the

construction of the Amarah Palace, a new principality building

was constructed in the Faisaliyah

neighborhood of the city. Thus, the palace

was left vacant and fell into disrepair .

Only in the past few decades has the palace

been maintained.

We then reached the rear courtyard of the palace and in the center was a well that apparently dates to the pre-Islamic period. As I looked down the well I saw that the walls on its lower part are made of seared clay blocks, that suggest that they have not been renovated and kept as they are.

We went through numerous rooms, which were reinforced with wooden brackets on the ceiling and had ventilators to let in air. An interesting thing we noticed was that almost every room had sculpted reliefs depicting typical Najrani motifs on their walls.

The most striking of all the rooms was the majlis. It had fine carpets, well-made cushions and exquisite lanterns adding to its grandeur. I then went to the prince’s residence, which had 17 rooms. It was a two-story building located at the rear end of the palace away from the guards’ rooms. It had its own miniature privacy wall. I entered the place and noticed that the rooms here were quite small and simple. It wasn’t that fascinating considering it was the royal residence – in fact quite similar to the guards’ rooms. But a remarkable feature here were the doors, they had elegant friezes running across them.

how to get there• If you are coming from the Abha – Najran highway, just before

you enter the main city look out for an exit that heads towards Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Road.

• Take this exit and set your odometer to zero.• Proceed for exactly 3 kilometers on this road and you will see a

small lane on your right. Take this lane and proceed straight in this small lane as it meanders through the old city. This road will eventually reach a major intersection after about 1.5 kilometers.

• From this intersection take a left followed by the second right. As soon as you take this turn you will be able to spot the palace on your right hand side.

GPS Coordinates: 17.4901728, 44.131895

Standing in the backyard is where we got the best view of the palace with the guards’ residence right in front of us. Through a small passageway we entered the dark corridor. On its walls were photos of the Saudi royal family and depictions of Najrani architecture. There were also some antiques lined up that gave visitors a glimpse of the day-to-day life of the former inhabitants. These included teapots, cooking utensils, textiles and other household items. We then climbed to the upper floors to the actual rooms. Inside lies a maze of anterooms and narrow meandering staircases. I almost felt like a child on a history trip – discovering secret passageways, clambering up hidden staircases, exploring room after room that opened into yet more unseen chambers.

By Rob L. WagnerPerhaps better described in an historical context as a sense of place rather than an actual gate, the Gate to Makkah – or Bab Makkah – is found in Historic Jeddah in the Al Balad District.

Recorded history of Bab Makkah is vague with little of its origins actually recorded. It’s thought to have been built during the Ottoman Empire with its brickwork and architecture reminiscent of similar structures in Damascus and Beirut. Perhaps most noticeable to students of Arabic architecture is the absence of any Najdi influence common in both western and eastern Saudi Arabia.

But the historic significance has less to do with the actual gate than area itself. Historic Jeddah can trace its history to the 7th century when it

became a major trade route that connected the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean by transporting goods to Makkah. While it served as a gateway for Hajj pilgrims who disembarked from ships at the Jeddah port for Makkah before air travel, its significance was first and foremost trade.

However, both trade and pilgrims allowed Jeddah to evolve into a multicultural city. By the 19th century, many of the district’s merchants built multi-story “tower” residences. Other buildings called “Wakalas” were constructed to accommodate wealthy pilgrims on their way to Makkah.

Today, Old Jeddah is a highly popular destination for foreign tourists and Jeddah expat community. While some of the historic residence are undergoing restoration, many remain in disrepair.
