Mt. SAC Transfer Challenges/Issues

• CSU Los Angeles admission modifications have severely impacted Mt. SAC transfer rates reducing enrollment by 117 students from 2016-2017 to 2017-2018. CSULA once was the 2nd

ranked CSU campus behind Cal Poly Pomona, now it ranks 3rd.

• UC admissions climate has focused primarily on the Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) student, requiring high GPAs and specific-based majors (only offered via TAG). By enforcing TAG, UC continue to create an equity gap among students accepting the highest performing student and offering them priority towards their admissions.

• CSU admissions is focused on regional admissions (prioritization) by giving priority to their students based on GPA and major course completion. Mt. SAC students seeking to transfer outside of the region have a decreased chance of admissions, due to the minimum GPA admissions criteria placed on non-local students.

• The Transfer Center has been without a Director for approximately two-years, impacting the leadership and general services for students and efforts.

• Only 31% of Latinx students transfer to UC.

• Mt. SAC ranks 5th among California Community Colleges transferring students to both CSU and UC, in 2017-2018 with a total of 1,837.

• Cal Poly Pomona has increased their acceptance and enrollment of Mt. SAC transfer students each year since 2016-2017. In 2017-2018, 817 students transferred which is a record high.

• UC Irvine and UC Riverside have increased their acceptance and enrollment of Mt. SAC transfer students. UC Irvine is now the #1 destination for Mt. SAC students to UC.

• Over 50% of Mt. SAC Latinx transfer students attend a CSU campus.

• 45% of Asian American transfer students attend a UC campus.

• African-American/Black students have a higher % transferring to UC at 4%, compared to CSU at 2%. The numbers may seem insignificant but it means that programs such as Aspire, Men of Color Initiative (MMI), and Equity efforts are making a positive impact.

• Added two Transfer Specialist within the past two years to increase services, eliminate equity gaps, and address transfer initiatives and partnerships.
