FROM THE HONORS COLLEGE MANAGER

Dear Friends of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College:

I am pleased to present this annual report highlighting the successes of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College

for the 2011-2012 academic year.

This academic year has been one of many triumphs for the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College at Palm Beach

State. It began with the selection to host the Florida Collegiate Honors Council Conference for the first time in

Palm Beach State’s history. We were able to showcase our students and our community and increase our

visibility among other state honors programs. Yet, our biggest reward was having the highest honors

graduating spring class that received Honors College Distinction. Increasing the number of graduates has been

a goal for the Honors Advisory Board and we were able to see our due diligence with policies that have

changed over time to continue to improve the program. We also were thrilled to hear that one of our very

own graduates, Ms. Maria Chapado, was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship among 10

other students in the nation. We also had several students go on to attend many prestigious institutions with a

full transfer scholarship until they graduate. These institutions include Emory University, Columbia University,

and University of Chapel Hill.

The Honors College continues to develop innovative ways to promote the program and will continue to seek

students whose main goal is to be challenged with our curriculum and seek to graduate want Honors College

Distinction. Honors students were able to contribute their ideas in March 2012 by developing an Honors

Student Ambassador Program. In an effort to bring awareness to students of the benefits of the Dr. Floyd F.

Koch Honors College, the Honors Student Advisory Council developed this program for Honors students to

come to classrooms and give a ten minute presentation to inform of the requirements for admission and why

they should join. I am very happy that students are taking an active role in continuing to use their grassroots

efforts to encourage students to join us.

As we move forward to the upcoming year, we look forward to starting August 2012 in a new building where

the Honors College will have a dedicated administration and classroom space.

Cheers to the future,

Marcella A. Montesinos

Mission of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College In keeping with the mission of Palm Beach State

College the purpose of the Honors College is to provide a challenging and supportive academic

environment in which students are encouraged to think critically, demonstrate leadership, and

develop ethical standards. Honors pursues an interactive learning experience where students

acquire a creative and comprehensive understanding of concepts in an interdisciplinary and global

context. Palm Beach State Honors students and faculty share a commitment and civic responsibility

that extends beyond the classroom to local, national, and international communities.

LEARNING

The Honors College currently provides students with an option to obtain

Honors credit by adding an additional component to their non honors

class if an honors course is not possible for them to take. The Honors

Project is designed to go above and beyond the classroom, with

professors mentoring Honors students throughout the semester. In 2011-

2012 there was a total of 77 Honors Projects completed.

Table 4 provides the list of the professors/mentors who guided Honor

students in obtaining Honors credit. Beside their name is the number of

Honors Projects they mentored throughout the academic year. The professor earns $125 for each approved

project.

7. In the following space, please make any comments you wish regarding the Dr. Floyd F. Koch

Honors College at Palm Beach State.

The Honors College has definitely gotten better since I first started attending Palm Beach State. The program has expanded and become much easier to use for students.

Nancy McDonald is an angel.

MORE HONORS CLASSES; MORE CLARIFICATIONS ON HOW TO OBTAIN POINTS, AND EVERY MEMBER SHOULD BE NOTIFIED ABOUT TRIPS. SMALL CLASSES WERE THE BEST PART!!

Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College at Palm Beach State has given me the opportunity to challenge myself and has been able to better serve my educational needs. The courses provided more vigorous courses and smaller class sizes in order to connect better and have better discussions in the classroom.

In one word superb.

Being part of the Honors College was the best decision I have ever made. Classes were challenging enough to bring up the best of me and my classmates, but yet they were a lot of fun! In addition to that, the involvement in multiple activities at school and in the community made me a better person.

It was a great experience being a part of the Honors College, however at times it was also extremely stressful simply because I did not even find out about the Honors College until I was half way through my Associates degree. With that said I do not regret joining the Honors College at all.

The instructors were phenomenal, always there to help and really wanting to see students succeed. The personal attention and real tenacity held by the faculty is a wonderful attribute. I will recommend the school and the more specifically the Honors College to anyone looking to further their education. Having transferred to a university near the West Coast, I have learned first-hand how different this country is as far as education - And quite frankly, if PBSC had offered the Bachelorette Degree I wanted/needed for medical school, I would not have left.

I'm am sad to be leaving

The ladies in the Honors College office in Lake Worth were very nice and helpful to me during my Honors experiences. I will miss Betty Dente, as she was a very likeable and kind person to me.

Marcella Montesinos is also very nice and helpful. I think the Honors projects that I did helped me in ways that will reach beyond the degree. The research that I did will stay with me forever. It was a lot of work, but I am happy to have been able to write the research papers that I completed and to be mentored by the professors with whom I had the opportunity to work alongside on these projects: Dr. Paul Labine, Ms. Tcherina Duncombe, Dr. Richard R. Shreve, and Dr. David Bethea.

I had a great time working with all of my professors on the research paper projects: Dr. Paul Labine, Ms. Tcherina Duncombe, Dr. Richard R. Shreve, and Dr. David Bethea. I will miss Betty Dente in the Honors Office in Lake Worth. She was a very nice person to me, and I feel that she was a very valuable asset to the college as is Marcella Montesinos, the Manager of the Honors College at the Lake Worth Campus. Marcella was also very nice and helpful. I find the Honors College very beneficial.

I am really glad I had the opportunity to be guided by professors such as Terry Randolph, Dr. Mc Gavin, Bobbette Wolesensky, and Pamela Pannozzo. I had the opportunity to use what they taught me in the internship I am doing now and I know I will keep using them in other areas of my studies. I would advice to promote more the honors college and give the opportunity to many eligible students who could benefit from it. The first thing to do is to make sure the college advisors know about the program and can direct students to it. I have been witness that most of the times they do not do it.

It was a great program to go through. I only wish I was more involved during my year there.

The Honors College has helped mold my post-secondary experience and education. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunities that the college afforded me both as a student in the College and as a graduate. Thank you!!! The Honors College truly went above and beyond my expectations as a college student.
