What a great time of year! With the recent rain and warming weather, we can practically watch every-thing turning green. Golf season is here. The course came through a difficult winter with just some minor damage on four greens. Many trees on the course have been trimmed and Jesse Shaver and his team have the place looking great already. Also, check out the new furniture at the tennis courts. This is a nice improvement to go along with the fun that Kelly creates during the summer. It’s not just fun for the kids. Cardio tennis class is a fun way to get exer-

cise as well as work on your tennis game. All levels of players are welcome. There is a great selection of new clothing and equipment at the Pro Shop. Stop in and say hi to new dad, Ryan Reynolds, and meet Josh, our new Assistant Pro. I hope to see everyone soon, enjoying all that GLCC has to offer.

Dear Members, After a quiet, yet successful winter season, we’re ready to dive into the spring and summer months here at the Club! We are excited to have already added new members to the GLCC family this year. We know these members will all be a welcome addition to our commu-nity and a big part of a great summer to come! Speaking of summer, the summer programming guide should have arrived in your inbox. This guide will be your reference to all of the classes and activities we

have going on throughout the season. It is the best resource for information re-garding sailing, kid’s camp, golf, tennis or swimming so be sure to keep it handy. If you’re looking for an extra copy, you can always find them on our website as well. We’re pleased to announce that we have a good number of familiar faces returning to the club for summer sports and activities. Kelly Monahan is ready to get back on the courts with all of our tennis players, while Ryan Reynolds has already launched into another promising golf season. Tom Lechota is returning as our Adult Sailing Instructor, with Mike MacQueen returning to man the helm for the Junior Sailing program. Pamela Barden returns as our Kid’s Camp Direc-tor. Pamela has been working hard to prepare a fun season for the kids so get excited for another active and educational camp experience. This year Sarah Matthews joins us as our Beachfront Director. Sarah brings years of experience managing swim and beachfront activity. Looking to stay more in the loop with club events? If you haven’t already, make sure you find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for club updates. You can also verify your email address with Michelle to ensure you receive our biweekly emails and be sure to check the Gull Post on our website at gull-lakecc.com. We’re also introducing a new app to the club - “Clubster”. Michelle will go into more detail about it in her article. The club is full to the brim with activities, events, classes, food specials, parties and so much more during our summer months, so we want to keep you as informed as possible so that you don’t miss out. We look forward to seeing everyone at the club this summer!

Dear Members and Friends, Greetings from the grounds staff! This has been a wonderful and productive Spring so far with many nice changes and additions to your club. This season is off to a slower start than we have become accustomed to ex-periencing, the sun has been shining for many of the days but the air was still quite chilly. However, this did not stop many of our more determined members from polishing their early season golf games. The grounds team has been working very hard to get the golf course and club grounds into shape for the season. With the capital projects and renovations coming to a close for the sea-son, everything is growing in nicely and looking beautiful. The new tee renova-tions were a much needed update to the course and I think you will find them to be very beautiful with an amazing playing surface for many seasons to come. The seedhead control on greens, tees and fairways was good this season without much discoloration and bronzing. We received about 40-60% control of seedheads on the greens, which is about average for the state of Michigan. Con-trol of seedheads on turfgrass is a necessary evil and provides a much more con-sistent putting surface during the Spring months along with more healthy turf for the entire summer golf season. Please remember to do your part to keep GLCC special by fixing ball marks, filling divots, raking bunkers and keeping your carts 30 feet from the greens whenever possible. It is important to remember that after you rake a bun-ker, please place the rake back into the bunker. Also when you take a divot from the fairway it is important to remember that if the chunk of turf has soil still at-tached please replace that; and if the divot ends up in pieces, that’s when you fill with the provided green sand. The club is in fantastic shape and lets all do our part to keep it that way. As always, if there is anything my staff or I can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to call. See you on the course. Best Regards,

JESSE SHAVER Grounds & Facilities Superintendent

Dear Members, The April showers have done their job and greened up the golf course in record time. Last year we were not golfing until the last week in April, this years opener was almost 4 weeks ahead of last year. Jesse and his crew have been hard at work waking the golf course up and getting it ready for a busy 2015 schedule. The Golf Shop is packed with new fashion from Vineyard Vines, Tail, Adidas, Straight Down, Dunning, Greg Norman and more! We have more demo offerings in both Men’s & Women’s then we have ever had before with great companies like Titleist, Taylor Made, Callaway, Ping,

Adams and Bridgestone. Stop in to be fit for the newest products and to get outfit-ted into the latest fashions!

Both Men’s and Women’s Leagues are off and running, if you are just arriv-ing from the south, you certainly have plenty of time to sign up and participate in leagues all summer long. The Men’s Thursday Night Match Play league begins on June 4th, so get a team together or ask the Pro Shop to find you a partner today! Beginning on Sunday, May 24th and continuing through August 23rd, we have the new Couples League. The league will consist of 9 holes, team best ball with stable-ford points awarded to the teams. The league will be 13 weeks long (two 6 week halves & Championship) we will count your best 4 weeks of the 6 for the half win-ners. Dinner will be available in the Boat Bar following play. All couples league par-ticipants will receive 25% off of their entire first purchase in the Pro Shop following sign up for the league (excludes equipment).

The last Friday of every month we will be hosting Twilight Golf. The events will each have a theme, on course events, food & beverage stations as well as gifts for the champions. The cost will be $25 per person or $50 per couple, which in-cludes on course food, a complementary beverage station, gifts for the winners & cart fees. Costumes and fun are always encouraged! Our Monday outing schedule once again remains extremely busy. Most of the outings take up the golf course until at least 5 pm, so please try to call ahead before heading out on Monday’s to make sure that the course is available for play. On Thursday, May 21st we’ll be hosting the Junior Achievement Golf Tournament. The course will be closed from 12—5 pm. We will do our best to find you alterna-tive options for play that day at local area clubs if you had planned on playing on May 21st.

We look forward to an incredible and memorable summer in 2015!

Dear GLCC members, Spring has sprung and it’s finally getting a little bit warmer out. The docks will be in before we know it and the club will be bustling once again. I’m looking forward to my first summer at GLCC and to see many of you who have been down south for the winter. First of all, I would like to welcome some of our newest members: Michael and Sara Blow and their sons; Mason, Luke and Ethan, Ed Cunningham Sr. and his daughter Ella, Ed Cunningham Jr. and his children; Kaitlyn, Hannah, Emilie and Jackson, John and KT McCann and their sons; Evan and Liam, David and Kristine Briggs, Ken Brown and Cindy Lowell and their daughters; Sara and Samanta, Mike and Kari Van Ryn and their kids; Annika and Nate, Brian and Lau-rie Klok and their kids; Jacob and Alaina, and Emily and Jonathan Boyer and their daughter Grace. If you see them around the club, please introduce yourself and welcome them to the GLCC family! Secondly, we have some exciting news on the membership services side! In the past month, I’ve been working with a company called Clubster which spe-cializes in developing apps for many private clubs across the country. We’ve de-cided to customize our own “app” through this company and are looking to launch it to the entire membership on May 1st. Everyone will receive an invitation via email to join and it’s a very simple process from there. On this app you will be able to make dinner and event reservations, see what events are coming up, get up-to-date information about the golf course, tennis lessons, etc. It’s very user friendly and I think you all will find it very useful. Please look out for the email invitation and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Ahoy all! Spring is here, ice is gone from the lake,

and it’s time to look forward to summer.

New this year for the juniors will be a change of

instruction days in order to coordinate with the golf, ten-

nis and swimming camps. It will be Wednesdays and

Thursdays this year with Fridays open for the advanced

students to attend regattas. For 2015, Gull Lake is on the schedule Friday, June 26th to host

the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association regatta. We will have junior sailors from 8 sailing

programs in West Michigan attending. The Western Michigan University Sailing Team is out

and sailing! Their spring season is so short with WMU out in mid-May—they have to get sailing

while they can!

The Yacht Club spring season started with the “Burn Your Socks” party in March and

now looks forward to the Star Fleet 63rd annual “Tulip Time Regatta” the weekend of May 16-

17. This regatta is lead event for Star sailors in this region of the US and is always well at-

tended with Star boats from near and far. Following the Tulip Time will be the Memorial Day

Handicap on Monday, May 25th for ALL the local sailors...and begins the summer sailing sea-

son!

At this writing there is no word on installation of the docks just yet. In addition, there

will be some heavy equipment around the launch area as we are having the channel dredged

to allow better access under the “gin” or mast pole. We have been told this will be completed

by May 1st. Please hold off on bringing your boat out until after the docks have been installed

as they need a large area to move the sections in place and float them out. Moorings will go

in once the docks are complete.

A last note, new Michigan law lowers the boating blood alcohol limit to .08 and follows

along with the “Don’t drink and drive” automotive campaign. Also, be aware there is a state

law on “operation of vessels in counter-clockwise fashion” (324.80149). This is for the power

boat side of the house in that sailboats don’t get much say in how the wind blows! We have

heard talk of this over the last couple of years but haven’t heard of reports of issuance of

tickets.

The grounds are greening up, Lorraine has flowers going in the ground around the

buildings, sun is staying up longer. It’s a great time to come out, have dinner and stroll around

the grounds and enjoy the pleasant spring events. See you on the water...soon!

Gull Lake’s Sunfish Fleet is growing and invites you to join in our fun races. Sunfish will

be fun racing starting Wednesday, May 20th (weather dependent through the end of Sep-

tember). Sunfish may be sailed singlehanded or doublehanded. We have our Season Series

and also our Island Series which is comprised of the fall Island Race(s) we choose. The Fleet is

also hosting the 4th Annual Michigan Open Championship Sunfish Regatta on June 6-7,

2015. Our regatta is known for being fun and lighthearted, while at the same time having

some really good sailors participating. Visit our Fleet Facebook page for updates:

There is plenty of play and fun to be had this upcoming summer in and around Gull Lake. Our committees, departments and staff have all been concentrating on making the

summer of 2015 to be the most memorable one ever. We have many enjoyable events already going strong and some just heating up. Among these are Family Fun Nights, Wet & Wild Wednesdays, Thursday’s Burger & Brew Nights and select Sunday menus. Enjoying wonderful events are not mandatory at the club, but they can certainly be key for you and your family. Check your Gull Post or calendars for more information and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Numerous opportunities are presented to meet and socialize with friends along the way. These events can also bring a chance to meet the new faces we are welcoming to the club. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few dates in the months of May and June. May 10th is a very special day at GLCC as we pay tribute to all the wonderful mothers by hosting a delicious brunch where moms do not have to cook or clean. This event fills quickly, so please get your reservations in. Then, join us for the over-the-top fun on Memorial Day weekend, where we meet to help welcome the beginning of summer - expect lots of food, games and activities. Looking ahead to June 21st, we will be celebrating Father’s Day with a brunch or the option to join us for live music in the Boat Bar that evening. If you are feeling ambitious, join us for both! These events are just a few I took the time to point out in this article. I guarantee you will find much more to suit you and your families wants and wishes. In concluding my article, I would like to send out a warm hello and welcome to all new and returning members to GLCC. This is going to be a “fun-tastic” sum-mer and I am looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying the club. Warmest regards,

“Summertime is always the best of what might be.”

1 gallon of water 1 cup of Kosher salt 3/4 cup of brown sugar 1/4 cup of your favorite rub

BASIC BRINE RECIPE FOR SMOKING CHICKEN

Prepare smoker for smoking by heating it up and making sure smoke is rolling before

putting chicken in smoker. I recommend smoking at 240 degrees. Rub your chicken with

your favorite rub (I like to use lemon pepper or lemon rotisserie). Place chicken in

smoker and cook until the internal temperature is 160 degrees because when you brine

the chicken it acts like a cure. The chicken will also raise another 5 degrees or so after

you pull it out of the smoker. Please let it rest 10 to 15 minutes before eating as the juices

need time to settle in. Pulling or poking at it before it rests will make the juices rush to

that spot and leave the rest of it a drier texture. When you brine chicken you cannot

really over cook it, so relax, have fun and enjoy your favorite beverage!

Mix all ingredients together, making sure it is dissolved all the way

Marinate for 3-4 hours Rinse chicken thoroughly be-

fore smoking

My name is Sarah Matthews and I would like to introduce myself as the new Beachfront Director. I am a graduate from Central Michi-gan University with a degree in Recreation Administration, and have worked at multiple country clubs in the Grand Rapids area. The waterfront staff will be offering private lessons and five differ-ent sessions for group swim lessons. We will be having a swim clinic in July focusing on a different stroke each day and an inner club swim meet, ages 5-17 are welcome to participate. There will also be open swim lanes starting at 9 am for lap swim Mon-day– Friday. Looking forward to this summer season. Please contact me with sign-ups, questions, and concerns and remem-ber to check out the bulletin board for upcoming events!
