Honours and Awards

Univ. Merit scholarship during graduation (1979-82)

ICAR Sr. Res. Fellowship for Ph.D. (1986-89)

Fellow of Indian Phytopathological Society (1995)

Member of REC of National Research Centre for Seed Spices, Ajmer w.e.f. 2009.

Project Associated/ handled

ICAR regular project : AICRP on Maize since 1993

Adhoc Project:

a) Pothogenic variation in BSDM and its utilization in characterization of resistant in Zea

mays (Co-PI)- completed.

b) Standardization of cultivation Techniques in Sarpgandha (Rauwolfia serpentine)

funded by DRDA.

c) Developing high yield heat tolerant and disease resistance maize inbred lines and

hybrids for urgent and future cereal and mixed crop live stock system under CSISA

(Central System Initiative for South Asia ob. 5) project of CIMMYT.

I. Area of Research: In research, I worked in following research projects at CSKHPKV, HAREC

Dhaulakuan till May 31, 2006.

1. Studies on Erwinia stalk rot and foliar diseases of Kharif maize and post flowering stalk rot (i.e.

Fusarium stalk rot and charcoal rot) and common rust in rabi maize with special reference to

identification and characterization of resistance sources.

2. Identification and characterization of resistance sources of vegetable crops (i.e. tomato, calcoasia,

chilli, cabbage, cauliflower) and spices (i.e. turmeric).

3. Management of Erwinia stalk rot and foliar diseases of maize Taphrina leaf spot of turmeric,

Phytophthora blight of colocasia, stemphylium blight of garlic and potato blights.

1. Indian Society of Plant Pathologists (Life Member)

2. Indian Phytopathological Society (Life Member)

3. Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology

4. Himachal Journal of Agriculture Research

5. Gaurav Society (Crop Research)

Technology generated:

1. Recommended collar rot resistant varieties of brinjal (Kt-4 and T-3) for cultivation in Zone-I

and included in package of practices of the university.

2. Recommended Taphrina leaf spot resistant variety of turmeric (DkhT-6) for cultivation in Zone

-I.

3. Recommended an effective fungicidal spray schedule (Tilt 25EC/Score @ 0.1%-2 spray at 20

days interval after initiation of the disease) for the management of Taphrina leaf spot of

turmeric.

4. Dipping of wheat seed for 6 hours in 0.01% solution of Contaf 5 EC resulted in significantly less

loose smut incidence. The treatment cost Rs. 6.00 per quintal seed. It has been recommended

for inclusion in the package of practices.

5. Sources with multiple resistances were identified amongst coordinated materials and 400

inbred lines of maize against Erwinia stalk rot, brown stripe downy mildew, maydis leaf blight,

Fusarium stalk rot, charcoal rot and common rust. Genotypes with multiple resistance are

Page 3: Dr. Akhilesh Singh - Hill Agric Singh.pdfSingh, Akhilesh and Singh D.V. (1991). Common scab of potato caused by Streptomyces aureofaciens: a new record from India. Indian Phytopath

being used by respective breeders. Inbred lines CM-205, DKI-22A, DKI 137A, DKI 138, DKI-

9406, DKI 9422, DKI 9453, DKI 9553 and many others are being used in hybridization

programme. From 1999-2006, successfully conducted 120 trials comprising 2342 stocks

during kharif against Erwinia stalk rot brown stripe downy mildew, maydis leaf blight, BLSB

and 40 trails comprising 617 stocks during rabi season against Fusarium stalk rot, charcoal rot

and common rust and identified resistant sources against these disease. Data sent to the

principal Investigator (Pathology) Directorate of Maize Research for further utilization in

breeding programme.

6. Seed Treatment of maize seed with Apron XL 35WS (2.4 and 3.5g /kg seeds) has been found

better for the management of BSDM of maize and it has been recommended at the National

Level during 47th Annual Maize Workshop at VPKAS, Almora w.e.f. April 17-19, 2004.

7. Application of bleaching powder @ 16.5Kg/ha at the time of sowing, earthing up and tasseling

for the management of ESR of maize and it has been included in the package of practices of

CSKHPKV, Palampur.

8. Ridomil MZ (0.25%) was found highly effective to manage Phytophthora blight of colocasia

and this fungicide was also found highly effective to manage Stemphylium blight of garlic and

potato blights.

9. Maize hybrids KH-101, KH-517, PSCL-4640, PSCL-3438 (1999), Girija comp. (2001) and DKH-

9705 (2003) have been identified /released for cultivation in low and mid hills of HP.

10. Identified Bajaura Makka-1(L-173) for Zone 4 during maize workshop at UAS Dharwad on April

10-12-2009.
