Project Location

• Route 4 near east village boundary of Merizo

• Near west village boundary of Inarajan

• Over Ajayan River at Ajayan Bay

Ajayan Bridge Replacement Project No. GU-NH-0004(118)

Project Overview

• Existing bridge constructed in 1968

• Existing is a single span CIP concrete bridge

• 2004 Inspection showed substructure and channel rated in serious condition

• Need to replace structural deficient bridge over Ajayan River

• New bridge will be longer and wider

• Channel will be armored for scour and erosion resistance



Key Project Features • New 105’ single span Pre-stressed AASHTO Girder Bridge • New pre-stressed concrete pile foundations for improved

scour vulnerability • Armored channel banks • Wider bridge which includes 2-12’ travel lanes and 8’

shoulders • New concrete bridge railings and approach slabs • Approx. 350 ft of new pavement • New striping, signs and guardrail for improved safety and

access • Relocation and accommodation of existing utilities on the

new bridge

• Environmental Mitigation • Within coastal tidal area • Nearby wetlands need to be protected (Section 401 &

404 permits acquired, permit conditions to be implemented.)

• Archeological monitoring • Biological monitoring prior to start of work • Turbidity monitors will be used during construction • Construction BMPs will be included

• Catchment platforms • Protective netting • Silt screen fences • Turbidity curtains



• Construction Staging • The existing bridge structure will be removed

• The existing piles will be removed and capped at mudline

• Existing guardrails will be replaced

• Pavement will be removed and replaced

• Heavy construction equipment needs to be assessed before it can cross the existing bridge

• Traffic will be maintained during construction

• Existing bridge will be removed in TWO phases

• New bridge will be constructed in TWO phases

• The new Aplacho bridge will be wider and longer (approximately 79’ span).

• Superstructure Type: Pre-stressed AASHTO Girders

• Substructure Type: Reinforced Concrete Spread footing

• Reconstruct road approaches: 400’ north and 700’

• DPW considering redesign of the abutments to be Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge System (GRS)
