Students from grade 10, 11 and 12 went to a slum of sector 5, Uttara and offered free medical checkups to the under privileged. Two doctors and three nurses were present to carry out the required diagnosis and prescribe treatments. The volunteers worked very hard from 9 am in the morning to 4 pm and made the event a successful one. ROAD PAINTING _______ _____________ On the 10th, DPS STS School organised a road painting session for the students. It was an incredibly polychromatic and varicoloured event where students and even some teachers put forth their talent in colour. Head of Art Department Mr. Nasiruddin organised the event and everyone enjoyed it immensely.

MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY______________ ___________

On the 23rd, Mother Language Day was celebrated in the Senior School. The programme was held in the Senior School Auditorium. Honourable Vice Principal Ms. Madhu Wal graced the occasion with her presence and by showing her respects to the martyrs in the Language movement. Students performed patriotic songs, dances and poetry recitation reflecting the sacrifices made during the Language Movement of 1952.

BOOK FAIR_________ ___________

To encourage reading, the school organized a book Fair from February 12th to 14th at the Senior Section campus. The fair was inaugurated by our Honorable Vice Principal. This year PBS Ltd. Bangladesh and Gyan Bichitra, Bangladesh participated in the fair. A good number of Classics and Contemporary collections of books were available in the fair. Students were delighted to obtain access to such a wide range of texts.

The Bangla and the MAD Department organized an exemplary performance of DPS STS Senior School Students at the 6th Bangla Olympiad held on the 11th at the International Turkish Hope School, Dhaka. The students achieved certificates and medals in various categories. The notable achievements were made by the dancers and singers. It was a day long programme where Aitijhyya Pal of Grade 9 was awarded with the 1st prize (Music category) and her younger sister Oindrila Pal of Grade 4 was awarded the 3rd prize (Music category). The event was broadcasted on channel 9 on television an later on, the cultural show of 6th Bangla Olympiad was held in the School premises. This was a great opportunity for the students to sharpen their skills and also display their talents. Students felt inspired and motivated after the Event was concluded.

ON THE SPORT – ART COMPETITION________________________________________________________________________________

On the 28th, the ART Department of DPS STS School Dhaka organised an on the spot painting competition. Students from Grades 5- 9 participated in this vibrant occasion. Everyone gathered at the Assembly Ground of the Senior Campus and exhibited their painting skills. The themes given were Mother Language Day or Landscape. Honourable Vice Principal Ms. Madhu Wal also participated in this event in order to motivate and inspire the students.

GALLERY WALK _____________________________________________________________________________________________

On the 12th, Head of Art Department Mr. Nasiruddin organised a Field trip for selected Senior School Art Students to the Shilpakala Academy in Shegun Bagicha, Dhaka. Students met with some of the Senior Artists present and also gained a lot of insight and information about how to understand art and create it from different perspectives. Students enjoyed a lot and returned feeling motivated.

MATHS QUIZ COMPETITION___________________________________________________________________________ A Math Quiz Competition (House wise) from held the 20th -22nd. Students found it intriguing and are now looking forward to further Math competitions in the future. DPS Boys (U-16) and Girls (U-19) teams were declared Champion and Runner up respectively in the DPS STS Inter School Football Tournament (DIFT-2017) held from the 24th - 26th. 22 prestigious English medium schools participated in this event. The event was scheduled for 3 days and the opening ceremony took place on the 24th. Honourable Vice Principal Mrs Madhu Wal and Principal Mr Harsh Wal declared the tournament open by sharing a few words of encouragement and inaugurated the tournament by releasing balloons carrying the DIFT banner. After a spectacular 3 days’ tournament at DPS STS School Dhaka, the DIFT successfully concluded its Programme by awarding the winners. In the Girls [Under 19] match, the DPS Black team put forth a relentless effort and played remarkably to attain the Runner up position as they were defeated by the Aga Khan Girls Team in the Finals for a total of 1[AKS] – 0[DPS BLACK]. The Boys round was a complete package of stamina and adrenaline on the field. The DPS Boys Pink Team [U-16] played a spectacular match against Sunbeams School. Though the Sunbeams team left no stone unturned and gave it their best, the DPS Pink Team succeeded valiantly and attained the Winner’s Trophy. The final Score was DPS 1- Sunbeams 0. In the Under 19 Boys Round, the Runner up team was Bangladesh International Tutorial and the winning team was Playpen Boys Team. A total of 36 teams from 22 prestigious schools of the region participated in this tournament and despite the concessions and victories, the students had a great time. Not only playing but also the idea of mingling with the peers and also familiarising themselves with the structure of organizing tournaments and successfully concluding a three-day event. The Prizes were awarded by Mr. Manoj Kumar [Dean of Academics and Director of Sports] and Mr. Aminul Islam [Head of Sports Department]. Overall, the students gained a lot of experience and also enjoyed themselves immensely. It was a successful tournament which was hosted by the DPS STS School in its own Football Field.

PRAN RFL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT____________________________________________________________

Bangladesh Basketball Federation organised a Basketball Tourament under the banner of Pran RFL. 16 esteemed English Medium Schools of the region participated in this event. DPS STS School sent Two teams; Boys Team and Girls Team. Both Teams played spectacular matches right up till the Semi Finals. The Final results were: DPS BOYS [21] – ST. GREGORY [36], DPS GIRLS [20] – SUNBEAMS [27]. Even though victory had not been attained, the students enjoyed themselves immensely and felt that this exposure was much needed as they got to practice with other teams.

CIE CAMBRIDGE CONFERENCE-2017_____________________________________________________________________________

Mr Manoj Kumar, Dean of academics attended a CIE Conference held at the Westin Hotel, Dhaka on 13th Feb 2017. The Principals and Heads of about 20 CIE Schools from Bangladesh were present in the Conference. The information about new courses at O, AS & A Level was discussed by Ms Jannet Morris, Director, International Network, CIE and Ms Ruchira Ghosh from India. The Cambridge Global Perspectives- an innovative and stimulating skill-based programme to develop the critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration skills for O Level students was discussed in detail. Some other issues regarding students’ registration for CIE, teacher support & resources and training programmes for teachers were raised in the Conference.

DPS MUN _ _________________________

The concept of Model United Nations took a new meaning with this year’s most

anticipated school-level event, DPSMUN 2017. Hosted by DPS STS SCHOOL

DHAKA on the 16th, 17th and 18th of February, the programme included an evening

of Socials and a Gala Night, alongside the characteristic Committee Sessions. The

Conference was graced by more than 400 students from more than 20 schools.

Mr. Benazir Ahmed, the DG of RAB Forces was the Chief Guest.

STRESS FREE TEACHING _____________

On the 5th, Grades 5-9 Teachers attended a workshop on stress free management. It was conducted by the Art of Living Foundation and the trainer focused on physical techniques to help alleviate undue stress and pressure. He also focused on the importance of laughter and discussed techniques in stress management.

GREEN DHAKA CAMPAIGN___________________________________________________________________________

On the 26th, DPS STS School Dhaka participated in the Green Dhaka Campaign. This was an initiative taken by the City Corporation in order to ensure a pollution free environment and also raise awareness for tree planting. The programme took place at the School’s Auditorium and to commence, the Director of Green Dhaka welcomed the audience with an inspirational speech. This was followed by an enlightening speech by the Honourable Vice Principal Ms Madhu Wal reiterating the importance of planting trees while reflecting on the horrifying statistics of pollution levels in Delhi and Dhaka. Dr. Brigadeer Golam Mostofa (Chief Guest) further spoke on the importance of trees while stressing the levels of pollution in the atmosphere mainly in the region. This was followed by another speech by C.O.O of Pran RFL Group (Special Guest) on a similar topic. The programme was concluded with a special quiz session where 5 Students of DPS STS School Dhaka received stationery items as prizes.

After the Programme, Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Chief Guest, Special Guest and Director of Green Dhaka participated in the demonstration of tree planting and once it was completed, 1500 trees were handed out to students and teachers.It was a learning experience for a lot of students and despite the fact that everyone is aware of the growing pollution problems, the Green Dhaka Campaign reminded everyone about the importance of Trees and also added the element of responsibility within the students towards a cleaner, pollution free Dhaka.

SEMINAR ON LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC) hosted a seminar on the “Building Bridges Leadership Training Junior,” a leadership program for Grade 6-10 students on the 23rd. The interactive seminar was organized by the Career Counselling department and 120 students from Grades 6-10 attended it. They shared their stories of leadership and expressed a strong interest in participating in the program and improve their leadership skills. The program will take place in April and it is very competitive to get admission into the program.

SEMINAR ON UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH, CANADA

On February 8th, 2017, a seminar was conducted by the University of Guelph to inform students about the myriad of opportunities available for academic and professional growth in Guelph, Canada. The presenter, Ms. Kerry Morrison spoke about the programmes, saying there are 80+ majors in arts, business, science and engineering. More than 1200 international students currently study at Guelph. She informed the students that entrance to University of Guelph does not require any SAT exams. The tuition fees for the university is approximately CAD 20,000 year.

SEMINAR ON BROCK UNIVERSITY AND SIMON FRASER INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE-FIC

On February 9th, 2017, a seminar was held on Brock University and Simon Fraser International College to inform students about the study opportunities in these universities. Mr. David Zutautas and Mr. Dylan Hoemsen interacted with the students and informed them about Brock University’s extensive undergraduate programmes ranging from Biological Health Sciences to Business. Their application deadline for the fall semester is on June 1, 2017.

SEMINAR ON BASICS OF CAREER PLANNING AND SUBJECT SELECTION

Seminars on the “Basics of Career Planning and IGCSE Subject Selection” were held from 19th-28th of February for all students of grade 7 by Ms. Nileema Khan, Career Counsellor and Ms. Tashmina Khaled, Assistant Career Counsellor. Students took a career quiz and learned about career pathways best suited to their personalities and skills sets. They also learned about the range of courses that they could take for IGCSE O level examinations. Moreover, students were encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities in order to discover their strengths and weaknesses and continue to explore meaningful career options.

Parents and teachers are requested to motivate students to visit the Career Counselling Office regularly from an early age so that students can plan for their academic success.

SEMINAR ON 'STUDY ABROAD AND EXPLORE YOUR CAREER'

On February 14th, 2017, a seminar was conducted by Ms. Nasreen Sultana, consultant from FutureEd on studying abroad and exploring different careers. Students learned about the importance of matching their education with the current job market demand, both locally and globally. She also shared the importance of selection of subjects which would affect their career choices. FutureEd has helped plenty of students in planning what steps to take to prepare for higher studies, selecting appropriate courses and career pathways.

WORKSHOP ON CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT & ATTRIBUTES OF A GOOD TEACHER by VICE PRINCIPAL MS. MADHU WAL

On the 27th, Honourable Vice Principal Ms. Madhu Wal conducted a very useful session on Classroom Management and Attributes of a Good teacher. All Senior School teachers attended the session which was held at the Senior School’s Auditorium. Vice Principal highlighted aspects involved in efficient teaching and discussed the attributes required in a good teacher.

Tawsif Hasan of Grade 12, received admission and scholarship offers from 'University of British Columbia, Vancouver' and 'Mcgill University, Montreal' in Canada. Moreover, he has also received an admission offer from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Nubaira Forkan has been accepted into the Undergraduate Pharmacology and Chemistry at McGill University abd also

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.

Faizan Ali (Grade 2) has been invited for FIDE World School Chess Championship-2017 in Romania which will held in April-

2017. The student will be accompanied by his parents and Mr. Masud Mallick (Chess Teacher of DPS STS).

Afridee Islam Alif (Grade 12) received admission and scholarship (South Florida 50% & Calvin College 72%) offers from

University of South Florida and Calvin College.

These paintings were published on a desktop calendar by Homebound [Freight and Cargo]. The selected students sent remarkable paintings which were both inspirational and motivational.
