This textbook guide is based on one prepared by an earlier DPC student, and we have tried to update it tomost recent editions. However it is only a guide; ultimately you will find the sources and study method thafor you. Purchasing textbooks may not be necessary, several are available online through the library and udiscover your process, it may be expensive (warning: the required DPC textbook list is not the same as thelist). There is a brief overview of the digital resources of the library included below. At the bottom of eachreview books for topics, and the last section is a review of review series. Review books can be useful whencontent exams, as well as the boards, but they simply do not provide enough information to be used as a p

Comments

Uses pictures of actual cadavers instead of drawings, which makes it much more usefulbecause drawings never get it quite right. The labeling scheme can be hard to follow, butalso makes it much easier to quiz yourself from the images.

Classic depictions of human anatomy, with physiologic and surgical correlations. Each sectionis supplemented with radiographs, as well.

Not to be confused with the Atlas of Anatomy (below), the series consists of three volumes(in order of usefulness): General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System, Head andNeuroanatomy, & Neck and Internal Organs. Very aesthetically pleasing and thorough.Covers structures in a repetitive fashion emphasizing structural and functional relationships.

Essentially isolated selections from the full series, which diminishes the usefulness. Can befrustrating to use because the condensed information is incomplete and has lost the bigpicture.

Required text for anatomy lectures. The information is dense in spots, but the images helphold it together.

More popular than Gray's with DPC students. Truly clinically oriented, with a much heavieremphasis on the functional and clinical relationships than Gray's. The clinical blue boxes are

useful for enlivening dry group discussions of anatomy.Very concise text supplemented with both photographs and drawings. Each chapter includesuseful review questions.

Hands-down necessary for anatomy lab. You may deviate from its instructions during lab, butremains a helpful resource so that you know what you're doing.

An anatomy atlas may not be necessary, as they are simply labeled images with limiteddescriptions of function. They can be useful as a study tool to test your knowledge byattempting to identify structures, but then again, that's the purpose of flash cards.Additionally, they can supplement the texts if you prefer a different aesthetic to the imagesin the texts.

Comments

Great overview of physiology, however it may be a bit too dense without any previous study ofthe subject. If you have a background in physiology, it can be enough information to jog yourmemory. Not excessively detailed, so it should be used in conjunction with one of the thickertexts.

Fills a similar role as Costanzo with a heavier emphasis on visual aids. The clinical correlatesare useful for supplementing discussions and understanding pathophysiology. Once again the

details aren't sufficient to sustain discussion, but the images are very useful for enrichinggroup.

This is another good place to start, especially if you have no background in physiology. Itsintegrated approach helps bring seemingly separate organ systems together and tie the bodytogether as a unit. The level of detail also precludes this from use as an isolated source.

The amount of detail presented varies with each topic addressed. Very good for cardiac andpretty good for renal, but its coverage of other topics doesn't provide any significantadvantages over other texts.

Written in a conversational tone, information is presented very casually and certain parts evenapproach enjoyably, while retaining a significant amount of depth. For most organ systems,there is a chapter covering clinical applications or pathophysiology of the system.

Overall very good, but it is lacking in some areas. The prose is very even throughout because itwas written predominantly by a single author. Unfortunately many of the diagrams were addedto the most recent edition and occasionally there is a significant disconnect between them andthe text. The content of individual chapters is repetitive at times which makes it difficult tobreak up a topic as a learning issue. Many students use this text and it is the preferred text ofthe content writers.

This book is very detailed and pedantic; it is certainly not a source to be used by itself, but itsthoroughness really helps paint a big picture. It was written for students oriented towardsresearch and spends quite a bit of time on physics and equations. Additionally, there is morean emphasis on the images than with Guyton, and finding information within a chapter is mucheasier.

A dense and text-heavy book, the depth of detail is an intermediate between Guyton and

Boron. Contains considerably fewer images than either of them.

Physiology can be found to some extent in textbooks of all biomedical disciplines. If you are notsatisfied with the information in the principle physiology textbooks, then the histology,pharmacology, or pathology texts can give a more satifactory explanation in the correspondingchapters. Failing this, the specialty textbooks on a subject will have a very thorough review ofthe subject (e.g. Orthopedic Surgery texts for bone, Cardiology texts for cardio phys).

Comments

This is more of a physiology text than histology, and is very detailed. It doescover everything you will need to know for histology, but can be daunting on itsown.

Much easier to read than Ross, but not as well organized or detailed. Diagramsare very useful for understanding cellular function and include tidbits ofpathology that are useful for stimulating discussion.

Very basic approach to histology, not enough detail for discussion but useful tolay a foundation. This is a good source for slides showing transitional zones oftissues.

Very structured approach to histology and histophysiology, dedicated to actualslides. This concise approach is helpful for review and understanding slides.

More detailed than the Color Atlas by the same authors, but with fewer pictures.Well organized and numbers details when possible.

Very condensed approach to histology with a combination of drawings andslides. Scantly detailed and the drawings can be misleading, not a particularlygood resource.

Approaching histology can be difficult because of the overlap between it andphysiology, but remember to look at slides.

Comments

Extremely thorough manual of pharmacology. The amount of detail can be overwhelmingat times, but everything you need to know is there. Available online through Access Med,so you don't need to buy it.

Information is presented in a dry, but straightforward, manner. The diagrams are colorfuland supplement the text nicely. Also available through Access Med.

Written from a British perspective, so all of the information presented may not apply tothose of us on this side of the pond (Hint: paracetamol = acetaminophen). However, theinformation is more accessible and the figures are well done.

Whereas most texts are organized by drug class and then discuss the illnesses they areused to treat, Waldman and Terzic addresses diseases and then the drugs that treat them.This novel approach does not make it the best place to start, but valuable for integratingknowledge. Also, the diagrams are very good.

Not excessively detailed with a comfortable tone. Also includes reviews of relevantphysiology, biochemistry, and/or pathophysiology.

Good introductory and review source for pharmacology. Emphasizes classes of drugsrather than specific drugs, so more detail may be needed for discussion.

Very thorough and detailed approach to toxicology, with a concise review of the pertinentpharmacology before each section.

Pharmacology is complicated and can be daunting. It may be helpful to use more than one

resource to study for it. Dr. Goldstein's notes are usually very good to supplement thetexts. Don't forget to cover the toxicology with each class of drugs.

Comments

Straightforward presentation of pathology with slightly less detail than the full Robbins.

Everything you need to know about pathology. Can be an overwhelming amount ofdetail, but the gold-standard for pathology at all levels.

More manageable level of detail than the full Robbins, clearly presented. Good to usewhile you get comfortable with pathology, but not enough for the long run.

Pathology is the culmination of the basic medical sciences, and helps piece together acomprehensive understanding of them as well.

MUST HAVE for path review - get it now and anotate from Robbins. Someinnaccuracies, always check info with Robbins. Goljan also has audio lectures that you'llwant to get from the 2nd years

Very succinct and well illustrated approach to biochemistry. Skimpy on the details,which can occassionally confuse.

The text advances rapidly and integrates physiology and cell biology. Better forreview than as a primary source.

The depth of biochemistry needed isn't as great as most other topics. Selecting asource is about how well you wish to understand it.

Condensed version of The Developing Human, which exacerbates its faults.

Succinct text, but the illustrations aren't well labelled.

The text can be tough to follow but it is well illustrated and has very good clinicalcorrelations.

Text is understandable. The images aren't as good as other texts, but the timelines atthe beginning of each chapter are very good.

Detailed and well illustrated, with a focus on molecular and genetic mechanisms ofdevelopment.

Well written and illustrated, but has a more molecular and genetic approach and covers

all animals, so it doesn't always apply definite timing for human development.

Embryo can be a tough topic to do because so much is constantly changing, keepingtrack of all of them at once is difficult. Strictly a text-based approach to something thatis four-dimensional just doesn't work, and images are recommended over text.

Dense, but balances the molecular and clinical aspects well.Numerous pictures are also useful for understanding.

Too verbose to be considered wholly a review book, but has verygood clinical correlations. Summary tables and questions are usefulfor review.

Quite simply, micro made ridiculous. Cannot be used alone, but anice supplemental source. Also good for antibiotic review.

The text takes a very fun approach to microbiology. However, itorganizes diseases by the region affected rather than by theorganisms that cause them.

Less detail than Murray, but has great pictures. Easy read, good as asupplement/preview before Murray.

Dense and occassionally confusing, text-oriented. The figures included oftenoversimplify the text, worsening the confusion. However, it is very useful uponrepeated reading or with a preexisting understanding of the immune system.

Extremely approachable primer on the immune system. The entire book can beread in a day and lay a nice foundation for further study. A very good place to

start, but not enough detail to be used alone.

Well organized, well written, and well illustrated. However, it is more wordyand less detailed than Parham.

Essentially, The Cell edited down about 500 pages. As a result, can be frustrating touse because it will reference things that were removed during the editing process.The only redemptive value is the multimedia disc, but it's nearly identical to that ofThe Cell.

Very detailed, but enjoyable to read and easy to understand. Well illustrated and themultimedia disc is well integrated with the text. This book is also a good resource for

Immunology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Developmental Biology. The hardcoveredition usually costs the same as Essential Cell Bio and the softcover edition is about$50 cheaper.

More detailed than The Cell, but doesn't cover the breadth of topics. The text is fairlydense, but the illustrations are clearly detailed.

Can be confusing at times, but everything covered in this book is almost identical to whatis covered in OMM lab. A very good resource for understanding functional anatomy.

Poorly organized, verbose, and different from what we do in lab. It has the advantage oforganizing techniques into tables.

Comprehensive manual of OMM, and the level of detail creates more confusion at an entrylevel than it facilitates understanding.
