Potato Chips and chocolate cake! Sound good? Throw in many spaghetti-like bundles of multi-coloured fabric, Doreen Dyer and 16 very enthusiastic quilting friends and you have got yourself one great afternoon.

Doreen had promised us that the name “Potato Chips” has been applied to these quilts because you can’t just stop at one as they are so much fun to make. This proved to be true, as it was interesting to note that we found them so fascinating most of us stayed on after we had completed our quilt tops just to see how the others turned out. Since ladies were starting the day’s sewing at different stages in the process, those of us who were starting from scratch took longer to get to the point where we could all go “Oh, wow! Look at that”, and no one wanted to miss out! Oh, and we could give a bit of a helping hand to keep all those long, long spaghetti strips of fabric in order!

The fascination of the process is that you have no idea what your quilt top will look like until you have removed your quilt from the sewing machine and made your final cut of the fabric. Then comes the melodramatic flick of the quilt and behold – a delightful surprise! Those of us who attempted to control placement of similar fabric strips found that they had been quite unsuccessful in some very pleasing ways. The more randomly sewn tops also came up with some very interesting results.

The process lends itself to the precut Jelly Rolls and Bali Pops and Judy Pratt, Guylainn Truchon, Lyn Bates, Annie Buckley, Di Howard and Kim Tait took this option with splendid results. Helen Tate was most innovative with her placement of contrasting squares inset between each fabric strip, which produced a very different effect. Another very different and pleasing quilt came from Bev Lee who used plain fabrics which resulted in blocks of solid colour, reminiscent of a landscape. Sue Duffield also produced a pleasing texture with lovely William Morris prints, and Barb Mellon (after much moaning and groaning during the sewing stage mind you) was delighted with the results of her bright and cheerful “Hawaiian fabric cleanout”. Others who produced great quilts with strips of fabric from their stashes were Joy Baker and Chris Knights with lovely brights, Judy Toy with glowing autumns and Janelle Rumble with deep purples. Anne Crossley and Bernadette Izod (both of whom started from scratch) are going to stun us with finished quilts at the next meeting.

It was a great afternoon, thanks to Doreen Dyer and all her assistance and encouragement. We are all looking forward to showing you at the next meeting just how much fun you also can get up to in a lazy afternoon.

Does anyone recognise this quilt?

This little quilt (A4 size) was submitted for the Judging a book by its cover Challenge issued by Karen Conway. Unfortunately, there is no label or any

other means of identifying the maker, so it’s sitting rather forlornly on my

desk. If it’s yours or you know who made it, please let me know on 0488 261

905 or [email protected].

I am also caring for a quilt made by Bonnie Heim who was a Katherine

resident when she made The Beagle – Darwin Sailed In for the Darwin Challenge issued by Christine Nathanael. If anyone has an address for

Bonnie (even a current email address or phone no) please let me know, so I

can arrange to return her little (A3 size) quilt.

Christmas Club - 9th February

There was a really good attendance at Christmas Club on Saturday 9 February. Of course I should have counted heads but I forgot, however I think there were fourteen or fifteen people sewing busily.

At our first meeting in January, we chose the quilt pattern for the Christmas Raffle Quilt and talked about how we would go about the task. At this meeting Belinda and Debbie brought four different pieces of fabric which will draw together the quilt’s theme. Everyone agreed to make one or two blocks using one of the theme fabrics and a selection of their own fabrics to complete these attractive blocks. I will say no more or it will spoil the surprise.

We worked with a buddy which was great for the less experienced quilters like me. As the blocks proved to be challenging there was lots of chat, advice, laughter and reverse sewing, but by 2.00 pm, almost everyone had achieved their blocks. It’s going to look stunning.

Thanks to Belinda and Debbie for a great morning, to Joy Baker for teaching the block, and to Jacqui Izod for her dash to Parap Markets for yummy laksa lunches.

Diane Clark.

Territory Quilts 2013 - Introducing our Judge:

SUSAN HARRIS

Judy Anictomatis and I first encountered Susan in 2012, when she was one of the speakers at the Australian Council of Quilters’ Official Dinner, in Brisbane. We were totally captivated by the superb quilts she displayed; they were large bed quilts that had been intricately hand-pieced and hand-quilted.

Susan has been making quilts for more than 30 years. She has extensive teaching experience across a range of classes from beginner to advanced, both around Australia and internationally. For several years owned a quilt shop, “Hearts and Hands” in Bullaburra, NSW. After selling the shop, Susan concentrated on making commissioned quilts, and wrote the book Classic Quilts (1998, 2003), Sally Milner Publishing. Her commissioning clients have included Bryce Courtney and Don Burke (of Burke’s Backyard).

As a member of the NSW Quilters’ Guild, Susan was an active member of the Valuation Sub-Committee for 12 years, and on moving to Queensland she became a member of Queensland Quilters (a.k.a. ‘2Q’) and is currently a Valuer for 2Q.

Over her quilting career Susan has also contributed a number of articles for numerous publications, including more recently to Machine Quilting and Quilter’s Companion. She is currently writing a new book of projects using the 60º triangular ruler. For a more detailed CV you can go online to

Internet Bytes

Many quilters have blogs and/or websites on the Internet which make for interesting reading.

If you have a blog or website that you enjoy and would like to share with DP&Q members, just

send an email and the websites will be published here.

http://dearjane.com/ A class at the University of Tennessee, Southern Appalachian Folk

Culture, was Brenda Manges Papadakis' introduction to quiltmaking. After writing a research

paper on quilting, Brenda knew she wanted to make a quilt." Since the early nineteen seventies,"

she says, 'I've been doing just that. Most of all, I enjoy the drafting and designing."

This is a great website if you are looking for information about, or tips on, making a Dear Jane reproduction quilt. We have several “Janiacs” in our club, although they seem to be operating

under the radar for the time being. After publishing her first book - on the 1863 Jane A

Stickler quilt (with its 225 block patterns) in 1996, Brenda Papadakis went on to publish Dear Hannah in 2003. This is a quilt in the style of Jane A Stickle, but made up of 143 blocks from

two mid-nineteenth century quilts and named for her granddaughter. A copy is in the DP&Q

Library – Shelf No. 975

Quilts 1700-1945

Quilts are evocative symbols of our collective past — stimulating our earliest memories of security and comfort and awakening the senses through touch and smell. They resonate with historical

references, revealing the social and cultural significance of what has often been simply perceived as ‘women’s work’.

‘Quilts 1700–1945’ explores the personal and social histories embedded in both highly decorative and homemade bed covers that reveal the maker's complex engagement with the wider world. Exploring over 200 years of British quiltmaking, every quilt has a hidden history, an unspoken story concealed within its layers. The exhibition features works from the V&A’s collection and loans from

selected UK museums, as well as one of the world’s most important textiles, Rajah Quilt (1841), from the National Gallery of Australia.

Queensland Art Gallery: Tickets/packages on sale from mid-March. Adults $15, Concession $12.

Ruth Stonely: A Stitch in Time

To accompany 'Quilts 1700–1945', the Gallery presents an exhibition of contemporary quilts by the late leading Brisbane quilt-maker Ruth Stonely (1940-2007).

Stonely was an inspirational figure, not only in terms of the expressive, innovative works she made, but as an active member of the Brisbane quilting and arts community, connecting with other makers through ‘Patchwork Supplies’, her Highgate Hill shop, and as a teacher to many local

practitioners. While Stonely came to quilting later in her life, only committing herself to her craft full-time from 1982, she quickly made up for lost time, making prolifically, and exhibiting widely in Australia, and internationally.

The exhibition will showcase exemplary examples of Stone ley’s practice, showing her transition from early experimentations with the contained patterns of the traditional quilt through to the free-flowing, abstract and expressive works she made in later years, to reflect her feelings, emotions and

ideas about herself and the people around her.

Territory Quilts Exhibition 2013

General Information

1. Entry Conditions Entrants must be either

• A resident of the Northern Territory (NT)

or

• A current, individual financial member of Darwin Patchworkers & Quilters (DPAQ) who has for part of the membership lived in the NT

The quilt is not permitted to have been previously exhibited at any other exhibition, including any Territory regional and agricultural Shows.

The committee has the right to refuse any or all entries. Acceptance of an entry does not automatically guarantee display of the quilt at the Exhibition.

Each quilt will be entered in one category only.

Entries must have been entirely made by the exhibitor, except for entries in Category O3 Group/Collaborative Quilt and Category O4 Commercially Quilted.

Group Quilts (Category O3) must be made by two or more people. The exhibitor must be the owner of the quilt and must acknowledge all other parties. The exhibitor must satisfy the Entry Conditions, ie resident of NT or current individual financial member of DP&Q who has for part of the membership lived in the NT.

Quilts must be submitted complete (including hanging sleeve, please refer Clause 5) and in good, clean condition, (no animal hair or offensive odours).

Commercial pre-packaged kits (e.g. pre-cut, pre-stamped or combination of fabric and pattern kits such as block of the month) will be accepted and should be entered into Category O5 – Quilter’s Choice (Any Other Item).

2. Definitions Definition of “Professional”

A Professional Quilter is defined as someone who teaches or publishes in the field of quilting, sells, designs or participates in making quilts

for financial gain and/or has won Best of Show or two blue ribbons in any major judged competition, excluding Viewers Choice.

Definition of “financial gain”

Financial gain is defined as: any amount above the cost of creating the quilt, cost of creating any article, design, teaching aids including samples, notes and travel expenses.

A major show is a State or Territory Guild judged exhibition or competition, a national or international competition or exhibition.

Having exhibited as a ‘professional, amateur status cannot be resumed.

NOTE: This definition has been taken directly from the ACQ (Australian Council of Quilters) definitions.

3. Copyright: It is the responsibility of the quilt maker to obtain written permission and pay any fee pertaining to the use of copyright material. A copy of the written permission must be attached to the entry form.

If you have used a purchased pattern, or a pattern from a book or magazine, or a pattern taught in a workshop, you have bought the right to use the pattern for personal use. This includes displaying your quilt in an exhibition. You must acknowledge or attribute your source in the Quilt Profile.

If you have copied an image from a postcard or painting, or book or photograph, you may have breached copyright law and need to seek permission, from the copyright owner, to show your quilt.

If someone else has drawn a design, or taken a photograph, they own the copyright to that design. The original item does not need to have displayed a copyright sign or warning.

The act of drawing the design, and/or taking the photograph, gives the artist or designer copyright on the design.

Copyright does not attach to techniques or to the vast majority of traditional patchwork and appliqué block designs.

4. Number of Entries For the exhibition held in the year 2013, there will be no limit to the number of entries per exhibitor per category.

However the quilts will only be exhibited if space is available. The exhibitor will be asked

Page 11: DPAQ Newsletter March 13 - territorystories.nt.gov.au · Page 2 of 13 Calendar of Events 2013 4th March Annual General Meeting, 7 for 7.30 at the clubrooms, 96A Winnellie Road 5th

Page 11-13

to nominate their order of preference in which the quilts will be hung.

If space is restricted, it may be necessary to limit the number of entries exhibited.

5. Entry Forms Entry forms, with fees, and photograph of entry, must be received by:

Friday 2nd August 2013

Each quilt entered will require a separate Entry Form and separate Quilt Profile.

Each entrant is requested to complete a ‘Quilter Profile’ and provide a colour photograph of themself so that a record of the entrants is available to the public and a copy can be kept for the Archives of DP&Q.

Either electronic or hard copy photographs will be accepted.

6. Entry Fees Entry fees are non-refundable, once an entry has been accepted.

Entry fee per quilt

Member $10.00 Non-member $15.00 Category A4 Junior only $ 5.00

Critique fee per quilt

Member $ 5.00 Non-member $10.00

Payment can be made by:

Attached cash, cheque or money order, or

Direct deposit to DP&Q account with the ANZ BSB 015 896 Account No: 258 685 721

Please insure that you insert your name in the reference details (eg A Smith TQ13) and include a copy of your receipt with your entry/entries.

All entry forms and fees must be received no later than Friday 2

nd August 2013.

7. Labelling your Quilt. Upon receipt of each entry form you will be given two labels. One will be for the back of your quilt, and the other will be for the quilt carry bag.

The label for the back of your quilt should be pinned or tacked to the bottom edge of the quilt. If you have already labeled your quilt then you will need to cover that with the entry label or with some other fabric ie calico so that

your quilt can not be identified other than by the entry number.

The label for the quilt carry bag should be pinned or tacked to the top centre of the bag.

8. Sending a Photograph with the Entry Form

One of the conditions of entry asks you to send a photograph of your quilt with your entry form.

It is not necessary for the quilt to be finished; a photograph of work in progress is acceptable.

The photograph will be used to assist with sorting the exhibits into the gallery space

If your photograph is not true to colour, please attach a small swatch of the main fabric(s).

The planning of the exhibition layout starts immediately after the close of entries so sending a photograph at a later date is of no use to the Committee.

Failure to send a photograph may mean that your quilt will not be displayed to its best advantage.

Either electronic or hard copy photographs will be accepted

9. Hanging Sleeve To enable hanging, each quilt must have two 10cms (4”) deep double fabric sleeves sewn to the quilts (no pins), one at the top and one at the lower edge of the quilt. Miniature & small quilts are to have appropriate size sleeves and rod supplied.

Quilts without sleeves may not be able to be displayed.

10. Quilt Carry Bag Please deliver your quilt in a suitable bag, on to which you have pinned or tacked the entry label that was sent to you. Ideally the bag should be an appropriate size that completely covers your quilt and can be closed.

Pillow case protectors are ideal, and very cheap to purchase from any variety store, or you could make a bag especially for transporting quilts.

Plastic/paper shopping bags are unsuitable as they split or tear.

11. Delivery of Quilts. You will be advised closer to the exhibition time as to when and where you should deliver your quilts.

12. Collection of Quilts

Page 12: DPAQ Newsletter March 13 - territorystories.nt.gov.au · Page 2 of 13 Calendar of Events 2013 4th March Annual General Meeting, 7 for 7.30 at the clubrooms, 96A Winnellie Road 5th

Page 12-13

You will be advised closer to Exhibition time as to when and where you should collect your quilts.

13. Insurance, Packing and Shipping costs.

Entrants are responsible for the arrangement and payment of any packaging, shipping and insurance of items in transit both ways and for the duration of the exhibition.

14. Photography Darwin Patchworkers & Quilters Inc will be taking photographs for our archives. These will be added to a CD which will be available for a nominal price after the exhibition

To enable us to photograph your quilt and to protect the intellectual property rights in your exhibited quilt we are now required to have your written permission. This is included on the entry form.

An example of a breach of your intellectual property rights would be when an image or images are innocently reproduced in the club newsletter or posted onto someone’s Internet site or blog where you have no control over how the image is used and for what purpose.

If you choose not to have your quilt photographed, the Exhibition Committee will do everything reasonably possible to prevent the public from taking photographs. This will be achieved in part by placing a sign, which would interfere with the image, across your exhibit.

You should also be aware that, if you allow images of your entry to be taken and you win a major prize that would make your quilt eligible to be exhibited in another competition, then you might have placed your potential future entry in breach of the conditions of the subsequent competition.

15. Sitting Rosters All local entrants will be encouraged to sit at the exhibition for at least one session. You will be contacted six weeks prior to the exhibition to arrange a time when you will be available.

Your time will be greatly appreciated and is vital to the success of the Exhibition.

Territory Quilts 2013 Exhibition Categories

NEW AWARD IN 2013

Territory Quilts 2013 will also see the introduction of a new award:

The Library Award:

A quilt or other item made from a pattern or technique found in a book or magazine currently in the DP&Q Library. This award is sponsored by Jenny Armour.

Jenny has decided to offer this award as an encouragement to members to see, and use, the Library as a valuable resource. Jenny writes:

A quilt (or other item) made from a pattern or technique found in the library (to) be entered in competition, and displayed alongside the appropriate magazine or book. This would lead to studying how the quiltmaker had been inspired, what colour choices s/he had made and how s/he had chosen to adapt the pattern. Education is a significant part of our being.

Arrangements could be made for the extended borrowing period which would likely prove necessary.

Entries for the Library Award must meet one of the existing categories in this Handbook. Entries must identify which library book or magazine was used in making the quilt.
