Ease of travel, massive advertising blitz and exposure to betterfacilities have largely contributed to the increase in the number ofIndians participating and visiting trade shows abroad over the years.Inspite of the growing number of exhibitions in various corners of theworld, the Indian contingent makes its presence felt everywhere. Therecently concluded Print China in Dongguan and Sino Corrugated inShanghai were witness to this phenomena.

Recognising the interest shown by the print industry, of one of thelargest growing economies of the world, the organizers too offer a lotof sops and encouragement to them by celebrating India Day at allmajor expos including drupa. By and large, this has widened thehorizons of the Indian print industry and the Indian printer hasbecome savvy and better informed.

The election season is in full swing. Till about two decades ago thisused to be a festival for the printers as it brought huge business tothem as each party outdid one another with a bigger and better printcampaign. But all that has become a thing of the past as now theelectronic and social media have taken centre stage fordissemination of information.

As far as the growth of reading habit and the demand forprinted books are concerned, the fears of digitalisation and theadvent of e-books appear to be negligible. We must take heartfrom the outcome of the New Delhi World Book Fair which wasorganised by the National Book Trust in New Delhi earlier thisyear.

With the theme “Books for Readers and Special Needs”, the fairnot only housed over 1,350 stalls put up by 600 publishers fromIndia and 25 foreign countries in the vast area of 23,000 sq. mts.,but also attracted a large footfall of nearly 9 lakh visitors from allwalks of life. Inaugurating the show the Minister for HumanResource Development Mr. Prakash Javadekar stated that“Books and culture compliment each other. The culture ofreading in India is increasing day by day. Despite the growingdigitalisation, the demand for books has not decreased. This isthe beauty of Indian culture”. Praising the theme of the bookfair, Mr. Javadekar emphasised on the reading needs andinclusive learning for normal and differently-abled children. Hevisited the exclusive exhibition of 500 books including Braillebooks, audio books, silent books, tactile books and similar otherbooks for differently-abled children. One of the major highlightsof the theme presentation was the “We Care InternationalDisability Film Festival” where over 50 documentaries from 27countries were screened to highlight persons who crossed thebarriers and achieved success. The Chairman of NBT Prof. Baldeo Bhai Sharma welcomed thedignitaries and spoke about the big role the NBT has beenplaying for promoting the reading habit in the country throughbooks, exhibitions and book fairs since 1972.

Considering the huge success of the World Book Fair as anindication of the growing reading habit as well as the gradualincrease in the demand for printed textbooks followinggovernment’s Right to Education and literacy programmes, thefuture of our print business appears quite bright.

Uteco Group and SimecGroup are now part of theItalian Technology Center(ITC) business network inPune, India, as a furtherstep in their internationaliza-tion plan. The entrance ofthe two companies in thenetwork was formalized bythe signing of the agree-ment, which took place atthe Federmacchine head-quarters. First established in2013 by Ucimu (the associa-tion of Italian manufacturersof machine tools, robots, automation and relatedproducts) and Amaplast (theItalian plastics and rubberprocessing machinery andmoulds manufacturers’Association), the ITC nowalso enjoys the support ofAcimga (the Italian Manufac-turers Association ofMachinery for the Graphic,Converting and PaperIndustry) of which SimecGroup and Uteco Group aremember companies.

The Italian TechnologyCenter offers its membersfinancial and marketanalyses, targeted marketingactions and event andexhibition organizationservices. In a market suchas India, where the industryof printing and convertingmachinery grows at theimpressive rate of 6.5% peryear, being part of a networkenables individual membercompanies to leverageinternationalization serviceswhile reducing costs andhaving a dedicated localstaff. For this reason,Acimga has decided topromote the ITC among itsmembers, prompting Uteco

and Simec to join thenetwork. As part of itsinternationalization plan,Acimga will support its twomembers by providing anadditional resource – anengineer assisting the twocompanies locally andjoining the staff alreadyworking for the ITC.

“India – explains Acimgadirector Andrea Briganti – isa very promising market forItalian printing and convert-ing machinery. Italy is one ofthe five largest exporters tothe country and there is stilla significant growth margin.Italian machinery is gener-ally renowned for employingtop-notch technology. Ishould underline that goingto India doesn’t meandelocalizing, it meansexpanding the scope of‘Made by Italy’ production –our member companies’unique set of high-added-value expertise and skill, regardless of where theybuild the individual parts oftheir machinery. The PuneITC will soon be imple-mented by a spare partswarehouse which will reducecosts even further for

network members.”The Italian Technology

Center will act as a bridge toIndia for the two Acimgamember companies, furtherincreasing their alreadysignificant talent for exports.

“We are widely recognizedas world leaders in printingmachinery – says UtecoGroup president Aldo Peretti– but to us this is not thefinish line, it’s the startingblocks. Our corporate policycovers two directions:increasing our penetration indeveloping markets andcontinuing to innovate tokeep up top quality stand-ards. India is a high-growth-rate country in our industry;we have a number ofbusiness contacts there, andthe ITC will provide us withmore tools to keep growingin the region.”

“Our cylinders are indemand across the worldand they play a key role inthe packaging and printingmarket – says Simec GroupCEO Emilio Della Torre -. Wedo not set any geographiclimits for ourselves: ourmotto is ‘go GLOCAL’; wethink globally and act locally.

Impel-Welbound introduces hardcover case-making solutions

Impel-Welbound is tointroduce hard cover case-making solutions in Indiaunder an agreement withRokin Technology.

Rokin Technology hastwenty years of experience inhandling hard cover, rigidboards and converting themto cases, stationery andboxes. The latest solutionfrom Rokin was displayed atinternational events, andaccording to Nair, they areexemplary because of theircompact design and high-end automation.

“The R18 case-makeroccupies minimal floorspace, and has excellent“throughput to area” ratio. The gluing system has aviscometer which helpscontrol the viscosity of theadhesive–water combina-tion. This is important tomaintain consistency duringhigher speeds. The machinealso accepts a wide range ofcovers and can bind up toseven pieces of boards,”Nair said.

In addition to the R18 case-maker, Rokin also manufac-tures board cutters, cornercutters and other auxiliary

equipment required for hardcover manufacturing.

So far, Welbound hadstayed away from the hardcover market, insteadfocusing its attention on softcovers. Despite customerfeedback about buildingsuch solutions, the demandfor perfect binders kept thecompany’s engineering teambusy.

“A lot of our leadingcustomers who also haveEuropean soft and hard coverbinders, constantly asked usto provide alternate solutions— new, flexible, yet costeffective. So when we met theRokin team, we realised thatwe can be partners and worktogether in order to fill thisgap,” said Kalasur who isspearheading the partnership,in addition to headingWelbound Technical Services.

Seana Huang, salesdirector of Rokin Technolgy, said, “We have alreadyshipped machines to India, and with this association withImpel-Welbound, who have agreat reputation and exten-sive after-sales support, wehope to have many machinesshipped into India soon.”

Cosmo Films launches CPP highbarrier films for packaging

Cosmo Films, has introduced a cast polypropylene (CPP)film for packaging applications requiring high moisture, oxygen barrier and high hot tack properties.

The newly launched heat sealable CPP films offer high hottack (>600gf/inch over a range of 100 to 140 degree celsius)and low seal initiation temperature; enabling packagingmachines to run at higher speeds. Films also offer goodmoisture, oxygen, light and aroma barrier properties. The highbarrier metallized films also offer high metal bond.

The films have been tested well for biscuits, cookies andcrackers, snack food applications, chocolates, and ice-creams. Available in a range of 20 to 30 microns, films are wellsuited for both adhesive as well as extrusion lamination.

Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films said, ‘We see increasingusage of CPP globally as well as in India as a choice materialfor packaging applications in food and agriculture owing toits high transparency vis-a-vis polyethylene and excellentsealing performance. Cosmo Films with years of experiencein the polypropylene space has worked hard to come up withan extensive range of CPP films that it offers today both fromfunctionality as well as monomaterialization standpoint.’

Events

For imparting written knowledge and education to one andall, the priceless invention of ‘Printing’ by JohannesGutenberg over six centuries ago was a turning point in thehistory of mankind. ‘Printing’ is an inseparable part ofpeople of all walks of life throughout the globe and itsvirtues and benefits are well known.

To preserve the memory of Johannes Gutenberg, who isregarded as the Father of the Art of Printing, Delhi Printers’Association has been celebrating Printers’ Day on 24th

February every year.As in the previous year, DPA celebrated Printers’ Day by

organising a function at the centrally-located orphanage AryaAnathalaya in Daryaganj where DPA’s Executive Committeemembers, former Presidents and some printer members

assembled for serving lunch to nearly 800 inmate students. Asa special gesture EC Member Mr. Vijay Goel had broughtchocolates for all the students.

DPA has also been holding social cause events like FreeGeneral Health and Eye Check-up Camps where about 500employees of local printing units as well as underprivilegedpeople benefit with free eye check-ups, medicines andspectacles. In addition, DPA arranges books from printermembers to be distributed to needy students, from differentbackgrounds who cannot afford to buy them, with the aim ofEducation for Every Child.

After the event, all the office bearers, EC members, former Presidents, guest members as well as DPA staff hadthe same lunch which was provided to the students.

Even in the case ofproducts for daily use, firstimpressions matter. And atthe point of sale, the firstimpression is generally thepackaging, because it’s thefirst thing that the customernotices. In this context, design is especially impor-tant, as the packaging hasto appeal to the customer totrigger the impulse to buy it.According to a surveyconducted by Statista, 69percent of German compa-nies are convinced thatpackaging design plays amajor role in brand manage-ment and communicationwith customers. At FachPack2018, packaging design andinnovative materials wereput under the spotlight atthe special show PremiumPackaging, which wascreated by bayern design onbehalf of NürnbergMesse. The around 40 exhibits fromall over the world wereimpressive evidence of how

packaging design can helpachieve a successful brandimage. At the show, whichwas divided into the threecategories EMPOWER,SUSTAIN and CONNECT,visitors were able to admirea selection of award-winningpackaging designs from thepremium segment that bringtrends, technologies andmaterials to life.

Packaging as addedvalue

The EMPOWER categoryshowcased products wherethe packaging doesn’t justperform a protective andtransport function but is atthe same time a part of theproduct for which thecustomer can find anadditional use. For example,Anne Bansen, student ofindustrial design at HTWBerlin, developed a cleveralternative to the conven-tional best-before date withher Tast(e) Food packaging,

winning the German Packag-ing Award 2017 in the“Young Talent” category. Thepackaging “communicates”with the consumer via asealing foil that changes itsstructure and indicateswhen the contents areinedible. As soon as bio-chemical changes occur inthe protected atmosphere ofthe packaged food, this isindicated on the packagingby means of visual andtactile information.

Packaging that issustainable

Sustainability, environ-mental compatibility andavoiding plastic are the hottopics in packaging design. The SUSTAIN categorypresented pioneers in thisarea. One of the manyoutstanding examples was apackaging solution fromFinland using a packagingmaterial innovation made ofFSC-certified timber and

natural binders that iscompletely biodegradable. Itwon the SustainablePackaging Award 2017. Thematerial has all the benefitsof plastic and is alsosuperior to other sustainablealternatives in terms ofprice, barrier effects andspeed of bio-degradation.

Outstanding storytelling,successful brand image

The third category,CONNECT, acknowledgedpremium packaging thatsucceeded in expressing thestory and the spirit of thebrand in a special way andplayfully encouragingconsumers to interact withit. One such example is thepackaging designed for theOberhofer winery’s veryspecial wine bottles for thevery limited release 2016vintage of 400 year-old vinesfrom “RhodterRosengarten”, the oldestvineyard in the world. Thehistory of the wine is verycleverly visualised throughthe overall look of thepackaging: the printedpattern recreating the woodystructure of the vines, thegnarly, vine-shaped cut-outon the front, the four layers –one for each century – thatare fanned out to reveal thebottle, and last but not least,

the solid base in rustic oak. It’s a complete work of artthat perfectly conveys thestory of the brand and wonthe Red Dot Award in 2018.

This and other examplesat the special show PremiumPackaging were evidencethat good packaging designis also always aligned to therespective needs andpreferences of the targetgroup, e.g. added benefit, environmental compatibilityor storytelling. The expecta-tions imposed on packagingalso depend on the age ofthe consumers it is designedto appeal to. This was alsoone of the topics discussedat the PackBox Forum atFachPack 2018.

Generation Y and Z:discerning consumers

In her presentation, Nina

Saller, designer and founderof Munich-based XbeyondS,said that younger targetgroups in particular, likeGeneration Y and Z, are verydiscerning about packaging.Their value systems are verydifferent from those of theolder generations. Theconsumer behaviour ofGeneration Y, also known as“Millennials”, i.e. those bornbetween 1980 and the late1990s, and the subsequentGeneration Z (born 1995 to2010) is characterised byenjoyment, individuality anda social conscience. Sallerexplained that packagingmanufacturers are respond-ing to these preferences, requirements and beliefswith packaging that ismanufactured using fewresources, gives the con-sumer added value, looksclassy and can be re-used,composted or recycled.

Inspiring, smart andsustainable packaging indemand

With regard to packagingtrends, the speaker providedexamples that can bedescribed using the um-brella terms “identify –inspire”, “enrich – smart”and “preserve – sustain-

able”. These includepackaging as an “identity-defining accessory”, thatgenerates elements ofsurprise, offers added valueand serves as a communica-tion medium. For example, acosmetics manufacturer hasproduced a transparentpaper bottle made from100% PCR paper. Once thecontents of the bottle havebeen used, the consumercan break up the packagingto separate the materials forrecycling. As an incentive thepackaging contains a packetof plant seeds. The “enrich –smart” category includespackaging that allows“interaction” with theconsumer, creates “woweffects” and offers theconsumer a benefit. Forexample, packaging ele-ments can be printed withspecial ecologically soundinks that are only visibleunder UV light. These inkscan be used for brandprotection and for advertisingmessages. Packaging in thecategory “preserve – sustain-able” is characterised by thefollowing properties: consistsof sustainable resources orwaste material, easy toprocess, doesn’t look “green”and is biodegradable. TheUniversity of Ghent, forexample, developed asustainable packaging fromcoriander oil and chitosan, abiopolymer derived from theshells of crustaceans, toextend the shelf life of foodproducts and cosmetics. Thematerial has natural protec-tion against fungi andbacteria, is as strong asaluminium but weighs onlyhalf as much, and is com-pletely compostable.

SPGPrints launches rotaryscreen integration module

SPGPrints’ has launched anew RSI III – the thirdgeneration of its rotaryscreen printing integrationmodule for label andpackaging presses. Themachine features time, safety and ergonomicinnovations for increasedproduction efficiency.

SPGPrints has introducedguards to prevent contactwith the rotating screen, squeegee pipe and gearwheels, which can signifi-cantly reduce the risk ofinjury.

A new web-cleaningscraper, positioned on aguiding roller immediatelyafter the nip between thescreen and substrate, automatically removesundesired ink splashes onthe web that may havespilled from the screenduring stoppages or slow-

rotation mode. Operatedonly for the first one-and-a-half screen rotations at thestart of the production run,the scraper ensures thor-ough drying of the substrateat all times. This minimizesthe risk of ink contaminatingthe rollers, thereby reducingthe cleaning requirement. Itslong-life plastic bladecollects the UV-curable ink ina pan attached to thescraper, which is easilyremoved for fast cleaning.

A new color interfacedisplay offers enhancedvisibility with a wider angleof observation. This meansthat operators can monitorand control the unit withoutneeding to view the screenat eye level, minimising riskof strain injury. Among otherbenefits, this facilitateseasier monitoring of controlsand ink levels.

Successful year for manrolandGoss Group - see major orders

After the successful merger of the two printing pressproducers, manroland web systems and Goss International, the newly formed company can look back on a successfulfinancial year 2018. With a combined turnover of EUR 293million and order intake of EUR 327 million, the companyhas solidified its leading market position in web offset. Thelatest major orders at the turn of the year to the value ofEUR 50 million, raised the order backlog to EUR 200 millionin the project business. Thereby, the company is currently ata very good capacity level, stretching into the second quarterof 2020.

manroland Goss web systems has presented itself in thisrespect as a strongly performing solutions partner to theprinting industry. “It is our objective to provide products anda range of services with added value for our customers. Wehave created a global company with the merger and providethe most comprehensive offer available on the market, withreduced cost structures and with a focus on efficientbusiness processes. This is reflected now in our operativeperformance indicators” according to CEO AlexanderWassermann, referring to the balance sheet of the previousyear. “Our strategy is clear: A further expansion of ourmarket position as well as the development of new profit-able business fields.”

In this respect, research and development funding hasbeen primarily invested in future-oriented areas; this meansflexible packaging printing, the preventative press mainte-nance system Maintellisense, and the intelligent B2BeCommerce trading platform MARKET-X. Furthermore, twoacquisitions are supporting the company strategy. On theone hand, the asset purchase of Harland Simon hasexpanded the product and service range in the area ofautomation solutions and, on the other hand, the sharepurchase of GWS complements the global business activi-ties with pre-owned presses and press relocations. Allactivities are directly oriented towards the benefits providedto all existing and indeed new customers.

Hubergroup launches NewV cure for UV inksInternational printing ink

specialist hubergroup hasdeveloped NewV cure, asystem for determining thecuring degree of UV inks.

While UV inks are gainingpopularity and offer a high-speed curing process, hubergroup explained it hasbeen difficult to quickly anddefinitively determine

whether the print is properlycured. Due to the lack ofreliable methods, mostoperators check curingquality subjectively usingphysical tests such aswiping, scratching or athumb, as well as chemicalcharacterization. However, the curing degree affectshardness, robustness, migration behaviour, and theability for further processingof an ink film. In effect, improper curing negativelyaffects the usability andquality of the printedproduct, hubergroup stated.

Dr Carina Sötebier, head ofthe central analytical lab athubergroup, explained: ‘Ournew science-based approach

provides an easy andobjective evaluation of UVcuring within a few minutes. To determine curing level ofUV inks, we use a test liquidand an electronic test device.By testing a predefinedextract, NewV cure canidentify the quality level of aprinted product.’

Roland Schröder, productmanager, UV at hubergroup, added: ‘With NewV cure, weend all subjective methodsof curing determination andcreate a new standard forquality management in UVcuring. It will help to reducewaste and rejects due toincomplete curing andincreases security inpackaging production.’

Lombardi updates Invicta 630 flexo pressLombardi Converting

Machinery has shown off anew version of its Invicta630 mid-web flexo press, an8-colour press designed forflexible packaging.

For the new version,Lombardi has designed theway it works. It is a 100percent gearless full servo

press with three servomotors for each printing unit.It comes with a choice ofweb widths from 450 to750mm and can run at up to200mpm. It works with avariety of substrates, including BOPP, PVC, PE,PET, paper, adhesive paper, thermal paper, cardboardand laminated materials.

This press uses sleevesand Lombardi has auto-mated the sleeve change sothat on the push of a buttonthe sleeve cylinder movesoutwards and the housingopen up to let the operatorremove and replace the

sleeve. Once the new sleeveis mounted, the housingcloses and the cylinderreturns to position.

The press can be con-verted into a pressure-sensitive label machine byadding die-cutting and wasterecovery. The company’sfounder Claudio Lombardistated: “Thanks to theLombardi’s philosophy ofextreme modularity thecustomer will never have tochange the machine he haschosen, but will be able toadapt and implement itaccording to the needs of hisfuture work.”

wasted. This will establish anew benchmark in themarket, reducing costs andenvironmental burdens.

The new DigiColor systemperforms "on-the-fly" jobchanges of color Delta E.Each of the seven ExtendedColor Gamut (ECG) inks issplit into a darker and alighter ink, which are mixedin-line to match the targetedDelta E. Closed-Loop colorcontrol of DigiColor achieves"digital" color-matching,color consistency at any

speed, on any substrate, with any operator worldwide.Converters and brand-owners will now be able torely on a new "digital"technology to protect theirbrand identities.

BOBST also presented aworld premiere for a solutionthat enables the full trace-ability of every piece ofpackaging. In collaborationwith ESKO, AVT, Pantone andX-Rite, the new solutionallows the “digital” traceabil-ity from the original file, to

the press, to the job valida-tion and final storage ofdigital data generated fromthe final printed job. It isbuilt on the BOBST DigitalFlexo technology andcombines WebCenter,ColorCert, SpectraLab andPantoneLive assets. Thisenables a fully digitalizedand connected workflow, transforming the way labelsand flexible packaging canbe done - timely, with theright quality control and theproper costs.

During the event, BOBSTFlexo and Mouvent Digitalpresses also showcased howdifferent print technologieson different substrates canachieve the same Delta E,maintaining accurate colorconsistency. This is veryimportant as brand ownershave various requirements, which can’t always be metby one technology only.
