History Conceived in 1985 Named for Dr. Ronald Dozoretz, a major

benefactor Created to reduce the shortage of minority

scientists by producing highly trained graduatescapable of earning M.D.’s and Ph.D.’s

Admitted first class of 20 students in Fall 1986 Expanded in 2003 to include students from

Tidewater Community College

Program Description

Degrees offered in Applied Mathematics,Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,Engineering, and Physics

Students participate in a four-week summersession before the freshman year

Students enroll in rigorous honors courses eachsemester

All students participate in summer researchprograms at the nation’s premier laboratoriesand universities

2007 - 2008 Budget

NSU provides an annual operating budget of$2,097,331 to support the program:Tuition, fees, and books $1,236,790Room and board 702,148Personnel, supplies, travel 158,393

Another $186,000 is available from externalsources to fund tuition, room, and board forselected students.

Program Statistics

Students have been awarded more than $2.5M in fellowships. Students received lucrative

fellowships from the followingprograms/foundations: Graduation Education for

Minorities (GEM) Program Packard Foundation A T & T Foundation National Physical Sciences

Consortium More than 50% of graduates have

earned advanced degrees.

The program has had 274 graduates since 1990.The cumulative graduation rate for all students who entered the program is 71%.

The largest number of degrees have been awarded to biology majors.Engineering degrees are expected to increase substantially now that the degree program is again an option for DNIMAS students.

Study Abroad“This past spring semester, I spent studying abroad inthe beautiful country of Botswana, Africa with theSchool of International Training (SIT). As soon as Istepped out of the aircraft, I knew then I wasbeginning a experience to be forever remembered.”

DR. PERMILA MACKEY FOSTERChemistry - Class of 1990

Dr. Permila Mackey Foster earned aPh.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biologyfrom Meharry Medical College. She iscurrently pursuing a post-doctoral degree atVanderbilt University.

Dr. Foster indicates, “As a participant, Iwas challenged to do my best and to alsopersevere through any challenge. I learnedto appreciate myself as an African-American woman and know the sky is thelimit to my potential.”

DR. DIONNE PRICEMathematics - Class of 1993

Dr. Dionne Price earned a Ph.D. inBiostatistics from Emory University.She is currently employed as aMathematical Statistician at the Foodand Drug Administration.

Dr. Price says, “The DNIMAS Programexposed me to various applications ofmathematics via classroom experiencesand internships. As a result, Idiscovered the field of biostatistics, aperfect blend of mathematics and thehealth sciences.”

DR. GREGORY PATRICKComputer Science - Class of 1995

Dr. Georgy Patrick earned adoctoral degree in Computer Scienceat George Washington University.He is currently employed as anAssistant Professor in NSU’sComputer Science Department.

Dr. Patrick states, “Thank you Dr.Dozorez for having the vision to be apart of such a valuable program. Iam fortunate to have been a part of it,and I hope that someday I can do mypart to participate in such anendeavor.”

MR. WALTER LINDSAYPhysics - Class of 1995

Mr. Walter Lindsay received a M.S.degree in Materials Science from NorfolkState University. He is currently employedat the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Lindsay states, “DNIMAS hasprovided the opportunity for young peopleto not only pursue careers in the sciences,but to be surrounded by those who pursuelike endeavors. Dr. Dozoretz, thank youfor having the foresight to help countlessnumbers of African American studentsgain access to their dreams andaspirations.”

Dr. Antionette Adams receiveda Doctor of Podiatric MedicineDegree from Temple University.She is employed at Temple East,Incorporated.
