CONTACT DOWNTOWN KINGSTON! NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2017 HOLIDAY WRAP 2016 We’ve wrapped up another holiday season! We kicked it off with the Nighttime Santa Parade in Downtown Kingston! While in town, the jolly man in red left behind four cheeky little elves that had a great time visiting downtown Kingston businesses in December; the DK! He also visited with good boys and girls every Saturday in December in Springer Market Square! The winning windows by three-way tie were Cornerstone Canadian Art & Craft, Minotaur Games & Gifts, and The Rocking Horse – with a “New Kid on the Block” award going to Ars Libri Hand Bookbinding Studio & Bookish. Pewter Collectibles were wildly popular again this year! The tradition continued with another five ornaments – Portsmouth Tavern, St. John the Apostle, Vandervoort General Store, RCHA Club, and The Tragically Hip Commemorative Stone. HERITAGE WEEK AWARDS Heritage Week is Feb. 20-26 and this year marks the 28th year of the annual Heritage Week Awards. A partnership between the Frontenac Heritage Foundation and Downtown Kingston!, Heritage Week Awards recognize downtown property and business owners who have invested in rebuilding and maintaining the beautiful building facades that make Kingston famous. Awards will be presented at the Downtown Kingston! SGM in May, 2017. Send your nominations for your favourite heritage renovations from the past year to [email protected]

KEEP IT CLEANKeep our downtown clean! The new bylaw in the downtown area prohibits garbage and recycling from being set out between 9:30am and 4:30pm. This bylaw allows the City to better control the amount of waste left out on the streets.

SNOW AND ICELet’s keep our sidewalks clear of snow and ice this season! Please ensure the sidewalks in front of your business are shoveled and use sand or salt to prevent them from becoming slippery. Business owners/property owners are responsible for the sidewalk in front of their business/property, as well as the removal of hanging icicles from their buildings. For vacant buildings, the property owner is responsible for ensuring safe passage for pedestrians.

Bylaw enforcement officers will be out enforcing winter control bylaws. Business owners who do not comply may face a fine of up to $5000.

To report unsafe conditions, contact the City of Kingston at 613-546-0000 or email [email protected] For more on the City’s winter control plan visit www.cityofkingston.ca/snow
