DEAR FRIEND,Have you ever participated in Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s 6x6 project? The “small art project” brings people together to create original artwork housed on a six-inch square canvas. Then the pieces are sold, with proceeds supporting the gallery. The pieces are collected in the spring and are exhibited and sold at the gallery in the summer. WXXI has been a proud media partner of the project since 2012 and many of our staff submit artwork, including myself (with a lot of help from our creative staff, for sure)!

Teaming up with our creative director Jon Haliniak, Jon and I created a piece that celebrates two big anniversaries happening in 2019. The first is the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing, which we honored with numerous programs in July including American Experience’s three-part series, Chasing the Moon, which told the story of the space race from its earliest beginnings to the first lunar landing on July 20, 1969. If you missed it, the series is available to watch online at WXXI.org/chasingthemoon.

The second anniversary is the 50th Anniversary of Sesame Street. The award-winning children’s television series premiered on November 10, 1969. With the help of a team of educators, researchers, and producers, the founders of Sesame Street created what has become the longest-running children’s show in American television history. WXXI will be celebrating the series throughout the year, including the hosting of a special event at the Central Library on November 2 with Cookie Monster. (For more details on special events

around Sesame Street’s anniversary, visit WXXI.org/events.)

We decided to purchase back our 6x6 piece in support of RoCo. The original piece now hangs at the station but the response to the artwork itself has been tremendous! Though we have created reproductions for events, and have made others available in social media contests, there has still been an ongoing demand. So, in commemoration of the 50th Anniversaries of the Moon Landing and Sesame Street, we thought we’d share it in print form, for you and perhaps a child or grandchild. Enjoy!

Best regards,

Norm Silverstein [email protected] | @normWXXI

THE HUNT FAMILY has been making wine for the public for almost 40 years, but they’ve been farming in the Finger Lakes for seven generations. Alongside their reputation as award winning wine crafters, they also have a long tradition of community engagement and environmental stewardship. WXXI connects with Director of Brand Evolution, Suzanne Hunt, to learn more.

Q. What makes Hunt’s wines distinct? We craft a really diverse selection of wine so that everyone can find something they enjoy. Our love and care for this farm really comes through in the character of our wines.

Q. What impact has climate change had on your farming practices? Intensifying unpredictable and extreme weather patterns present real challenges for growing

highly sensitive fine wine grapes. We’re working to both mitigate and adapt to climate change. We’re enhancing soil health through organic amendments, large-scale composting, mulching and the use of biochar. We’ve also invested in efficiency enhancements and renewable energy like solar and geothermal systems. We treat our land as a complete ecosystem, where the grapes are sharing space with wildlife and plants.Q. Can you tell us a little bit about your other services/offerings? We have our seasonal café which serves up dishes made from local, seasonal, and organically grown ingredients whenever possible. We also host an array of different events, from workshops to concerts with musicians from all over the country. We offer yoga classes throughout the year, and we’re available for hosting private events. We also have electrical vehicle chargers that are free to our customers.Q. What events can people look forward to at Hunt Country this fall? The first weekend of October marks the 30th anniversary of our biggest event of the year: the Hunt Country Harvest Festival! It’s everything you’d expect from a Finger Lakes winery in the fall - grape stomping, hayrides, kids activities, music and food, and of course, wine! But we also have some special plans for this anniversary!Q. “Fun fact” about the early generations of Hunt farmers? Founder Art Hunt’s great, great, great Uncle Josiah Prentiss started commercially growing and breeding grapes on Keuka Lake in the 1830s. He’s credited with introducing “grape culture” to this area. In the 1850s, he sent the first shipment of grapes to NYC, kicking off the “grape boom” in the Finger Lakes.

Recognized for her outstanding dedication to the station, Christine Adamo received the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award at WXXI and the Little Theatre’s Annual Volunteer

Recognition Ceremony. Christine touches upon almost every service of WXXI and the Little. She has helped out with our radio and TV drives, festivals, kids events, and was an integral leader of the Little Street Team, the volunteer leg of The Little’s Screen Saver campaign. She wrote for our volunteer newsletter for several years, volunteered as a guest liaison for our Connections show, and is a member of the Volunteer Leadership Council. Alongside her work at WXXI, Christine has been a strong advocate for veterans, and has been on the Veterans Affairs Task Force since its inception in 2015. Helping to connect the task force to resources they may not have otherwise been aware of,

Christine always approaches everything from the veteran’s perspective and uses their voice to address topics like PTSD and women in service.

The Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year Award, named after the late Charles (Chuck) Wise – a loyal WXXI volunteer for many years, stands as a testament to Wise’s unwavering spirit of volunteerism. Each year, a committee

of staff members from WXXI and The Little identifies one volunteer who has been an ambassador for the organization.

IN DEFENSE OF FOODSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 AT 4 P.M. ON WXXI-TV Join New York Times best-selling author Michael Pollan on a fascinating journey to answer the question: What should I eat to be healthy? Busting myths and misconceptions, this two-hour special reveals how common sense and old-fashioned wisdom can help us rediscover the pleasures of eating and at the same time reduce our risks of falling victim to diet-related diseases.

ALL THINGSBAKELITETHE AGE OF PLASTIC MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TVThis film explores the life and work of Leo Hendrik Baekeland, the “father of modern plastics,” who was responsible for one of the most transformative discoveries of the 20th century. Before inventing Bakelite, the first plastic made with synthetic components, Baekeland’s first big invention was Velox, a paper for printing photographs that he sold to Kodak founder George Eastman for $750,000 in 1899. Entertaining and informative, the film delights with musical performances that capture the wonder, as well as the curse of Baekeland’s alchemy; for while Bakelite and its descendent products became essential to our lives, they have also created serious environmental consequences, raising an existential conflict even Leo H. Baekeland faced as he questioned the value of his miracle material. It is an inspiring, thought-provoking story that explores the promise and the pitfalls of genius and innovation.

*Second Opinion Down Syndrome

INDEPENDENT LENS DOLORES SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT 4 P.M. ON WXXI-TVOne of the most important, yet least known activists of our time, Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez. Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century — and she continues the fight to this day, in her late 80s.

POV THE SILENCE OF OTHERS PREMIERES MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 AT 10 P.M. ON WXXI-TV This film reveals the epic struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco as they continue to seek justice four decades into democracy. Filmed over six years, the film follows the survivors organizing the groundbreaking “Argentine Lawsuit” to fight a state-imposed amnesia of crimes against humanity, where the emotional court battle uncovers a country still divided over its fascist history. record and memory.
