Why an Amelia Earhart Fellowship?
• Zonta International, the only non-flying organization which Amelia joined voluntarily, in Boston in 1928
• On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in her attempt to be first pilot to circumnavigate the earth at the equator
• At that time, Amelia was a member of the Zonta Club of New York

The Amelia Earhart LegacyIn 1938:
• Zonta voted to honor her memory through a scholarship loan fund for women graduate students in engineering, with a special interest in aeronautics
In 1939:• Zonta established the scholarship of $500 to be
awarded each year to a woman for graduate study in aeronautical engineering
In 1941: • Zonta adopted the Amelia Earhart Scholarship as
an official International Service Project

The Early Years of the Fellowship
• First scholarship awarded in 1940 to Rose Elizabeth Lunn, a doctoral student in Aeronautical Engineering at MIT– In 1940, very few doctoral programs in engineering and
very few women– Second award made in 1941
• Between 1940 and 1957, only 19 applicants were qualified for the Amelia Earhart Fellowships

Zonta’s Leadership of the Fellowship Program
• First three AE Committee Chairs were non-technical University faculty (chairs 1938-1968)
• Fourth Committee Chair (1968-1978) was first chairman with doctorate in physical sciences
• Sixth Committee Chair (1992-2000) was first chairman with doctorate in aerospace engineering
• Only seven Chairs from 1938 to today

Zonta and Technology• Zonta showed foresight into the role that aviation
and aeronautics plays in advancing science and technologies
• Technology is the single greatest instrument of change throughout the world
• Aerospace-related sciences have influenced all aspects of our lives:
• Health• Communications• Materials• Transportation• Energy

Amelia Earhart Fellowships-to date
Zonta International’s Longest Running Service ProjectTo date, Zonta has funded:• 1333 Fellowships• awarded $7.5 Million US• 929 women from 65 countries have benefitted
![Page 14: Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship A role model for improving the Status of Women Sharon Langenbeck Amelia Earhart Fellowship Chair 2010-2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e385503460f94b29a57/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
• Today’s AE Fellows are following in Amelia’s footsteps– Breaking down image barriers – Advancing the status of women
• AE Fellows are mentors and role models for others, improving the prospects for women in the future
• Zonta is enabling women to move into positions of influence in universities, industry and government
AE Fellows and Status of Women

Where are we now in the Aerospace Field?
• In the U.S, women in aerospace-related fields represent approximately 10% – Women make up 18% of engineering students
• From 1999-2008, women entering science and engineering graduate programs increased 31.3%– Number of male students up by 15.8% in same
time period
![Page 16: Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship A role model for improving the Status of Women Sharon Langenbeck Amelia Earhart Fellowship Chair 2010-2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e385503460f94b29a57/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Advancing the Status of Women• Establishment of the Amelia Earhart Fellowship
as an International Service Project was absolutely aligned with Zonta’s goals
• Education is the key to improved economic, social and health status, and, independence
• Through supporting higher education in engineering and sciences, Zonta International helps women overcome gender barriers to careers in traditionally male-dominated fields
![Page 17: Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship A role model for improving the Status of Women Sharon Langenbeck Amelia Earhart Fellowship Chair 2010-2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e385503460f94b29a57/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The Big Picture• Support of women in graduate studies is not
sufficient to get a women to graduate school • Gender inequality in education begins much
earlier in life • Of an estimated 93 million children not in
school, 48.4 million are girls• A significant support system that starts in the
early years is needed for girls to advance in education
![Page 18: Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship A role model for improving the Status of Women Sharon Langenbeck Amelia Earhart Fellowship Chair 2010-2012](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e385503460f94b29a57/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Zonta in STEM Activities• Children benefit from early mentoring and
interaction with role models and local Zonta Clubs are providing that role model
• Many of the successful women in science and technology had childhood and youth encouragement– Math and science elementary education– Opportunities to compete for hands-on experience– Exposure so comfortable with working in math and science
