Shaunavon curling fans will be in for a real treat this week.
Not only will local fans get to see some top level competition, but they can watch it all for free.
All of the draws for this week’s Affinity Credit Union Senior Men’s South Qualifier - set to take place Feb. 9 to 12 at the Shaunavon Curling Rink - will feature free admission.
Another drawing card for the south-ern qualifier is the high number of local southwest teams competing in the event.
Among the participants will be Shaunavon’s own Grant Selvig, who will skip a rink comprised of local curlers Kevin Braun (third), Michael Thienes (second) and Dale Burch (lead).
Selvig is no stranger to high level competition, having participated in numerous provincial playdowns - at almost every level - over the years.
Three Swift Current teams - led by skips Max Kirkpatrick, Clayton Wicks

and Rod Quintin - will also be tak-ing part in the Senior Men’s South Qualifier.
Kirkpatrick is among the best curlers in the province. He has com-peted in multiple provincial cham-pionships and even won the Saskatchewan and Canadian mixed curling titles a few years ago. Wicks’ team, meanwhile, will feature Shaunavon curler Greg Moffat, who will throw second stones for the Swift Current squad.
Other teams taking part in the Senior qualifier include Murray Stroeder of Moose Jaw, Randy Gilewich and Ken Rogers of Regina, Daryl Williamson of Moosomin and Mark Walter of Lampman.
Williamson and Gilewich both qualified for the provincial champi-onships last year. In fact, the Gilewich team made it all the way to the championship game before falling to Brad Heidt 5-4.
In total, there will be eight teams vying for three spots at provincials.
The qualifier will open Thursday (Feb. 9) with an afternoon draw at 2 p.m. Among those playing in that
first draw will be Selvig, who will face off against Wicks.
The other 2 o’clock matches will see Stroeder against Williamson and Walter against Gilewich. There will also be a 7 p.m. draw on Thursday.
Three draws are scheduled for Friday (9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) with two draws on Saturday (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.). The draws on Sunday are set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Qualifier #1 final will go at 7 p.m. on Friday while Qualifier #2 is sched-uled for 7 p.m. on Saturday. The final qualifying spot will be deter-mined on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The North Qualifier will be taking place in Prince Albert at the same time, although five teams will earn berths to the provincial champion-ships from that event.
The provincial championship will be held in Swift Current this year Feb. 22-26.
Shaunavon has hosted numerous provincial events over the years, including the provincial senior men’s championships in 2010.

What kind of day will tomorrow be? To find out what the stars say, read the fore-cast given for your birth sign.
For Monday, Feb. 6, 2017ARIES(March 21 to April 19)Today you’re full of bright, genius
ideas because you can think outside thebox. Write them down so that you canponder them later.
TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)Keep an eye on your money scene,
because something unexpected couldaffect your finances and earnings. Bevigilant; do not shoot from the hip.
GEMINI(May 21 to June 20)Make sure you know what you want to
do today, because you are a bit impul-sive. At the same time, you’re also a bitindecisive. Yikes! That’s a bad combo.Tread carefully.
CANCER(June 21 to July 22)Today you feel restless and mildly
indecisive. Don’t worry, because late inthe day, the Moon will move into yoursign and you will know what you want todo. Be patient.
LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)A female friend might surprise you
today by saying or doing something thatcatches you off guard. Nevertheless, youwill be entertained! (Oh yes.)
VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)Relationships with a boss or parent
will hold a few surprises for you today.Don’t hold someone to what he or sheimpulsively says. Don’t quit your dayjob. Wait until the dust settles.
LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)Travel plans will be interrupted today
by silly circumstances and delays. Letthe chips fall where they may, and thendecide what to do afterward.

A young pastor was sitting in a restaurant eating lunch. He opened a letter he’d just received that morning
from his mom. As he opened it a twenty-dollar bill fell out. He thought
to himself, Thanks, Mom, I sure needed that right now. As he finished his meal, he noticed a beggar outside on the sidewalk leaning against the light post. Thinking that the poor
man could probably use the twenty dollars more than he, he crossed out the names on the envelope and wrote
across the top in large letters, PERSEVERE! So as not to make a
scene, he put the envelope under his arm and dropped it as he walked past
the man. The man picked it up and read the message and smiled. The next day, as the pastor enjoyed his
meal, the same man tapped him on the shoulder and handed him a big wad of bills. Surprised, the young
pastor asked him what that was for. The man replied, “This is your half of the winnings. Persevere came in first in the fourth race at the track yesterday and paid thirty to one.

Two zombies were discussing how they were going to go out and satisfy their appetites.
“I think we need to be a little more authoritative and menacing,” Zac said. “These potential victims seem to be taking us for granted.”
“I don’t know about that,” replied Hal. “I think a subdued, common sense approach is the better way to go. That way they’re more likely to let their guard down.”
“I’ve listened to you take the polite approach when you get the urge to munch on gray matter,” countered Zac. “I don’t think that gets the job done.”
“How so?”
“Well, for one thing, you DoN’T ask your victim, ‘can I pick your brain?’”

Daughter: “Mommy, where did I come from?”
Mom: “Sweetheart, you came out from Mommy’s body.”
Daughter: “How exactly?”
Mom: “Well, your head came out first, then your arms, followed by
your legs.”
Daughter: (thinking about what she just heard) “How did you
assemble them?”
