A new pitching sea-
son is almost upon us. Looking forward to the World Tour-
nament at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg, NY.
If you plan on pitching in this event and don’t have your 4
tournaments you still have time. There is no need to wait
until the last minute. Also, if you have not been to a WT in a
while, it is now electronic scoring. So on page 7, I have
added “Call The Score Correctly”.
You will notice that in some issues of the “MUD” I
will be inserting applications. In this issue it will be the
World Tournament Application. May issue will house the
camping registration which can be sent to Paul Thomas
after May 1st.
On the NYSHPA website under applications in the
table of contents I have made it so that there are three ge-
neric applications on one sheet of paper for printing and
sharing purposes.
Please think about taking advantage of having the
“MUD” emailed to you or just view it online. Postage has
gone up again this past January. If you did not mark it your
renewal application and would like to receive it via email or
be viewed online, just send me an email stating which one

I would like everyone to
know that I will not be running for NYSHPA President this upcoming term. Following
this years NYS Tournament, I will be permanently moving to our new home in Eclec-
tric, Alabama. I will finish out my term and continue to help with this year’s World
Tournament. After that, I shall be helping Montgomery, Alabama to try and win the
bid for the World Tournament in 2016. Can you believe that? Finish up the year with
a bang here in New York and then start out in Alabama where we left off. It’s real fun-
ny and ironic how life works out sometimes. I really hope that someone steps up to
the plate and decides to become leadership for New York State.
Support is still needed from our local clubs for the World Tournament. Erie Horse-
shoe Club from Pa. has generously donated $500.
I would like to thank all the members for giving me this opportunity and supporting
me throughout my Presidential term. I have made many lasting memories with so
many of you, and think of you all as my “horseshoe family.” This will not be the last
time that you hear from me or see me. Diane and I will always be around, just not
during the winters that’s for sure!
Stay warm…..Lyle Dorler, NYSHPA President
Message from President Dorler
you would like at [email protected] Please keep in
mind that only one hard copy is mailed per residence. If
you do not receive your Mud I need to be notified. I triple
cross check my mailing list.
In closing I am going to try one more issue in color
print. I found a cheaper source for ink that I think will meet
my needs. However, if it turns out not to be cost effective
then the hard copies will be printed in black & white.
Online will still be uploaded in color. ~Karen

Hall of Fame
At the, 2013 Hall of Fame Ceremony, our newest inductees did not perform
their respective speeches. I am sure it was do to the hype surrounding the
induction ceremony. I contacted both gentlemen and told them that I would
like to publish their acceptance speech in the February Mud. Here are their
respective replies:
Ray Hall writes: I wish I could thank my dear departed wife I had told her one time that
I was going to quit, she said “honey you can’t quit we have to many friends in horse-
shoes”. She was right as usual.
I would like to thank the Hall of Fame committee for voting for me. I would also like to
thank Jimmy & Marian Gee, John & Marjorie Mosher and Charlie Reigles for being a
great friend for 31 years. There are many more and you know who you are. Thanks to
all the tournament directors for keeping the sport going.
Your Horseshoe Friend, Ray Hall
Lance Hinman writes: I want to say thank you to everyone that voted for me, it was a
nice surprise! I can’t tell you how proud I am to be in the New York State Hall of Fame.
It means so much to me, my family and club members.
A special “Thanks” goes to Rick Whitney. He was so special, he will be missed by so
many. May God Bless each and everyone of you. Thank you, Wayne (Lance ) Hinman
submitted by Rowland Rupp THREE OUT OF FOUR
“Three out of four” I used to hear from my friends at work who knew I liked to throw horseshoes. Sometimes it was a more modest “two out of three.” They were referring to how many ringers were made by someone they knew, or someone else knew, whose prowess in scoring ringers was astonishing. These wonders of the courts were their friend’s uncle or the brother of their neighbor down the street, who just couldn’t miss throwing ringers. At first I was impressed, and somewhat envious – where did these 75% ringer pitch-ers come from? When I asked their names, I never heard of any of them. I would comment to whomever was telling me this remarkable tale that I knew a hundred or more pretty good horseshoe pitchers in the area who played in leagues or in tournaments, and only one of them could get “three out of four” with any consistency and even he (future New York State champi-on, Bob Hayes) rarely attained this lofty pinnacle. One day I figured it out. I had taken a break from practicing at a public court, and when I resumed pitching there was an elderly fellow sitting on a park bench adjacent to the pit where I had left my four shoes. I picked them up and threw them to the other end. I don’t recall what I scored, but when I threw them back, I luckily got three ringers. As I walked back to retrieve my shoes, the old-timer commented words to the effect “that was pretty darned good!” I truly didn’t know what he was referring to, so I asked what he meant. He said, “why, you just threw three ringers.” Obviously he was more impressed than I was, after all, I had done that once or twice before. Later it occurred to me that he might well have gone home and told his family or friends about this incredible horseshoe pitcher who threw “three out of four.” The point is we tend to remember the highlights and dismiss the mundane. There’s a big difference between getting three ringers out of four now and again and averaging that. If this fellow really did go home and tell about “three out of four” he probably forgot about the times I made only one out of four, or the unmentionable, which is worse. After that, when someone would tell me about an unheard of horseshoe pitcher who threw “three out of four”, I would invite them to my backyard where I would throw “three out of four” just for him. I warned him that he might have to be a bit patient! It turns out that a pitcher who averages 35% ringers ought to score three ringers out of four shoes roughly once out of every nine tries. Even a 25% pitcher should get three ring-ers out of four almost once out of twenty. That may make it seem to be a pretty infrequent event, but if someone happens to come along at just the right time, he can go off and tell his friends at work about the guy who throws “three out of four.”

Current Woman’s State Champion Ellen Perry went to her lo-
cal trophy place to see if she could get 3 additional red panels
added to the woman’s traveling trophy. These panels house
