DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY
1. Services provided:
Outpatient services: The outpatient wing currently functions in 2 units; Unit 1
provides OP services on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while Unit 2 provides OP
services on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Inpatient care: The Department of Psychiatry provides out-patient and in-patient
services on a daily basis. The Department excels in providing affordable mental
health care without compromising on the quality of the services provided. The
department has seen a steady increase in the number of patients utilizing our services
over the years.
The in-patient wing has a total of 32 beds with an average bed occupancy rate of over
80%. There are 2 closed wards; one each for males and females respectively, needed
for the care of restless and extremely agitated patients. There is a separate duty room
for the duty post-graduate so as to attend to any emergency calls.
Community services: In addition to OP services, the department also conducts
community psychiatry camp once a month (Third Tuesday of every month) at
Moodabidri.

Exclusive facilities for in-patients:
A TV and a music system are present for the entertainment of in-patients and their
attendants. There is also a pantry where patients and their attendants can do basic
cooking. There are various recreational equipment for patients such as carom-board,
chess and other games to keep patients active during their stay in the hospital
Department Seminar Hall:
The seminar room is used for various post-graduate and under-graduate academic and
teaching programs. It has a capacity for 40 students and has Audio-visual equipment
for various academic programs.
Clinical Psychologist:
A qualified Clinical Psychologist provides psychotherapy and other psychological
interventions and assessments for patients requiring the same, on a daily basis.
Department Library:
The department library has a collection of over 100 books of the latest editions of
various post-graduate textbooks in psychiatry. In addition, the central library provides
access to online journals and books.

rendering social service as visiting psychiatrist at “Vishwasada Mane” a psychiatric

9. Extension activities:
Consultancy:
a) Dr. Rohan Dilip Mendonsa is a visiting consultant psychiatrist to „Vishwasada
Mane‟, a rehabilitation center for homeless mentally ill at Shankarapura, Udupi
District.
b) Dr. Anil Kakunje conducts free psychiatry camp on last Sunday of every month at
Ujire, which is attended by 60-70 patients on average.
c) Dr. Anil Kakunje visits Seon Ashram for mental and physical disabilities once a week
and provides his services.
d) Dr. Ravichandra Karkal is the consultant child psychiatrist for a NGO called
Akaanksha Charitable trust from November 2014, which works for the education of
underprivileged children. He has attended many programs where he has evaluated
students for psychological problems and learning disabilities. He has also conducted
educational and awareness programs for children and their parents.
Invited talks/lectures:
a) Dr. Rohan Dilip Mendonsa delivered a talk on suicide prevention on 15th
March, 2015 at
the release of a short on suicide prevention „00.01 sec‟ by Kameron studios, held at Don
Bosco Hall, Mangalore.
b) Dr. Rohan Dilip Mendonsa was invited to give a lecture on „Oh mind, relax please!‟ on
25th
January 2015 at the meeting of Sunrise Rotary Club, held at Vinaya Hospital.
