Since it was implemented in the mid-1980s, The Great
Lake Allatoona Clean Up has won numerous accolades,
including the Take Pride in America Award from 1986 to
1989 and 1991, Certificate of Environmental Achievement
awards from Renew America from 1996 to 1998, Public
Lands Day Award in 1986 and a Keep America Beautiful
award in 1995.
In 2018 innovations were made to further GLAC’s anti
litter message all year long by adding new teams of volun-
teers: The Dive Shop (A Dive team getting to the very bot-
tom), Water Warrior Team (vessel owning volunteers who
organize cleanups throughout the year reaching hard to get
to places), Zone Captains (Adopt a Shoreline teams who
coordinate with the winter warriors) and businesses such
as DOW Chemical (who partner with GLAC members to
conduct cleanups during the year), The Great American
Cleanup 2018, during its 33 years has over 7 million dol-
lars of volunteer value, an average of $237,601.36 annual-
ly.

Great Lake Allatoona - A Great American Cleanup Event
Keep Bartow Beautiful (members of the GLAC Committee) brought 21 stu-dents, 1 teacher, 3 Chamber Leadership members and 6 Master Gardeners
as VOLUNTEERS (31) to the 2018 Great Lake Allatoona CLeanup after event. Each volunteer worked at least 3.5 hours totaling 108.5 volunteer
hours interacting with cleanup volunteers—3,127 were registered. The 21 Cass High Students, led by teacher Chuck Bohannon, presented
activities from KBB’s “Water Works for Kids” (water education program) at River Side Day use Park (513 Allatoona Dam Road SE, Cartersville, GA,
30121). These activities are set up as games and are geared to make par-ticipants aware of the importance of preserving/conserving WATER (a nat-
ural resource we can’t live without). Our volunteers (3 adults - Kaysi Darrah, Linda Fleetwod, and Nichole Varnell) from The Chamber Leader-
ship Team, gave the two person KBB staff some much needed help this year handling crowds,
handing out information and providing the young
attendees, who completed each activity, a T shirt. The GLAC event is a great way for KBB to impact large numbers of kids and their parents with water related education. This year’s October 6 event re-moved 7.11 tons of debris and 225 tires from the lake. Additionally, and for the first time, several smaller cleanups were conducted by the newly formed “Winter Warri-ors” group. These “warriors” were able to get to areas by water that have been im-
possible to reach by volunteers from the shoreline in the past. Using an average of 25 lbs (increased from the normal 20lbs to account for the heavier weight of type of items being removed (metal, bottles etc.)) x 840 bags - they removed an additional
10.5 tons and 246 tires. Increasing the overall total of trash removed our water resource to 17.61 tons and 471 Tires.

Cass High School students helped KBB with
Five activies. 1 - Some of them donned the
Etowah and Cherokee Darter costumes bring-
ing to life The message of “small fish but
HUGE environmental indicator” as darters
need a quality habitat to survive. 2 - Other
students took turns
being the “Bag
Monster” (plastic
bags making up a
large portion of
detrimental litter)
demonstrating the
number of plastic
bags one person
uses in a year.
Many of the cleanup volunteers
who take part in the education-
al activities during the after
event are member of Scout
groups.
3 - Cass Students lead the Scoop
the Poop Race demonstrating
the need to pick up after your
pet.
4 - Cass High students lead
young attendees in the
“Toilet Toss for Water Loss”
game intended to make kids
aware of the amount of wa-
ter is wasted every day do-
ing ordinary things.
5 - Others helped attendees make a water shed with colored markers indicating
all sorts of pollutants that can run into our watershed. Spray bottles of water demonstrate how rain water picks up
these pollutants carrying them into our rivers, lakes and eventually the sea.
Water quality /quantity is an important
part of gardening. Our partners—
Bartow’s Master Gardener’s presented
an art activity and are always around to
answer “growing” questions through
their “Ask A Master Gardener”
program.
