Monday – ScienceL.O. To explore what plants need to survive.
Light
Plants use light to make their own food. When plants make their food,
this is called photosynthesis.Photo means light.
Synthesis means making.
So, plants make food by using light.
Warmth
Plants will die if the temperature is too low (if it’s too cold).
Think about what happens to plants and trees in the winter season.
Read the information below.

Monday – ScienceL.O. To explore what plants need to survive.
Nutrients
Plants use nutrients to help them make their food. Fertiliser contains a
lot of nutrients. Different nutrients help the plant in different ways. Some help the roots grow. Some help the flowers grow.
Water
Plants need water for photosynthesis.
The water also dissolves the nutrients so that they can be can
be taken into the plant by the roots.
Air
Plants need air for photosynthesis. They need oxygen to convert food
into energy.
Read the information below.

Monday – ScienceL.O. To explore what plants need to survive.
Task
Create a poster to show what plants need to survive. You can use the examples opposite to help. Be careful, these examples don’t include all the elements a plant needs to grow!
Meet It: Create a poster to show the 5 elements plants need to survive.
Beat It: Explain why a plant needs each element to survive e.g. A plant needs air to convert food into energy.
Smash It: Add a sentence or two to explain what photosynthesis means.
If you would like to, you could email a picture of your poster to your class teacher. [email protected]
In the email subject, include your name and ‘Plants Poster’ For example, Lucy Clarke – Plants Poster

Tuesday - PSHEL.O. To explore mindfulness to manage our emotions.
12
Do you ever feel like your mind can be like a snow globe? All shaken up with
thoughts falling everywhere?
Have I remembered
to do my homework?
I hope my baby sister doesn’t
keep me awake again tonight.
I hope we haven’t got
pasta for dinner tonight again!
I can’t believe my brother took my football
to the park without asking...it’s mine!
Discussion Time
Think about a time when you have been worried about something that might happen in the future or a time when you were worrying about something that
had happened in the past that had upset you.
Imagine
Just imagine if your mind could be worry free and a calm, peaceful place so that you can enjoy life even more every day.
Well it can…and we are going to find out how.
Have You Ever Heard an Adult Say…?
…‘I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it,’
This expression is a way of not thinking or worrying about a possible problem that might or might not happen in the future. You will deal with that situation if and when it happens but not now.
Have You Ever Heard an Adult Say…?
…‘That’s all water under the bridge,’
This expression suggests not to worry about a problem that happened in the
past which you are no longer in control. It’s in the past, learn from it and move
on to the here and now.
The above bridge expressions are great ways to help us visualise and understand a huge part of something called mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a certain way of thinking that can help us with many everyday situations and help us be calmer, relaxed and enjoy life.

Why do we doodle?
• we are talking on the phone;• listening to music;• watching TV;• doing homework.
The Act of Doodling
Doodling is something we do when we are not really thinking.
We might doodle when:
Think
about it…?
Picture 1
Get an A4 sheet of paper and draw different shapes across the whole page. It can be like Picture 1 or Picture 2.
See each shape as a separate space. Draw patterns in each individual shape as you can see in Picture 2.
The Art of Doodling
Mindfulness patterns are created using doodles.
Picture 2
It is a time to let your mind wander while creating something unique and beautiful.Colour in the different patterns only when the whole sheet is covered.
Remember, small patterns will take longerto colour in.
You could even have a go at drawing your own shapes to complete with mindfulness patterns.
The Mindfulness of Doodling
Take your time with this as the process is more important than the end product. Creating a mindfulness pattern is creative and relaxing.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day – Friday 8th May 2020
There are lots of different VE Day themed activities that you can choose from and you’re more than welcome to complete as many of them as you like.
Victory in Europe Day or ‘VE Day’ took place on May 8th 1945.
It was a public holiday and day of celebration to mark the defeat of Germany by the Allied forces in Second World War.
VE Day was the end of the war with Germany and ended six years of suffering, courage and endurance.
VE Day was the end of the war with Germany in Europe and ended six years of suffering, courage and endurance.
We mustn’t forget that World War II was still being fought in Asia Pacific and didn’t fully end until Japan finally surrendered on 15th August 1945, which then became Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day).

Time to Celebrate
Captain Tom Moore has been in the news a lot recently because he has raised over 28 MILLION pounds (so far) for the NHS.
He walked 100 lengths of his garden which is very hard when you are 99 years old.
Captain Tom is a hero now because of what he has done for the NHS but he was also a hero when he fought as a soldier during World War II.
Captain Tom was one of thousands of soldiers who bravely fought hard to make VE day happen.

VE Day Activities

Design your own bravery war medal. Do some more research and create a VE day fact file.
Learn a 1940s swing dance. Make your own newspaper front page to announce peace in Europe.
Make flags and bunting to decorate your house for VE day.
Bake your own VE Day celebration cake or cupcakes.
Leave a message of thanks for men and women of the World War II by leaving a VE Day message on the Royal British Legion website.
Learn the wartime favourite song “We’ll meet again”
Record your own speech like Winston Churchill, announcing the end of the war.
Write a letter or draw a poster for Captain Tom to say thank you.
Choose any of the activities from the table below but most importantly, enjoy the day with your family.
If you need further help or guidance, look at the slides after the table.
Learn to Swing Dance
Dancing was one of the most popular hobbies during the war. Every town and village had a hall where dancing could take place.
There were many different types of swing dance, to see how one type was performed during the 1940s, click here
You can learn the swing with someone at home, click here for a lesson.
Create a medal for people who served in the armed services during World War II.
Your medal can be any shape or size and remember to design a ribbon too!
Ideas to think about:• The years of the war (1939 – 1945).• The colours of the Union Flag.• A symbol to signify the war and a person’s sacrifice.• A reference to which area of the armed forces – an aeroplane, warship, a helmet.

Have a VE Day Tea Party
On VE Day, street parties were held all over the UK. Friends and neighbours got together and celebrated the end of the war. This year, instead of a street party, you can celebrate in your garden.
Sandwiches were popular at street parties, why don’t you choose and make your own?
Turn to the next slide for some special wartime recipes.
Record a speech like Winston Churchill

Create a flag or bunting
Streets and homes were decorated with flags and bunting on VE day. The colours often used in bunting were red, white and blue, the colours of the Union Jack.
As there had been war for six years, people made bunting out of whatever they could find, including paper and material. Remember to think of the environment and try and reuse any paper or material at home.
