Sun or age spots, brown spots, (pigmentation issues)

Just about everyone has brown spots on their skin. Age spots (solar lentigos), freckles, and birthmarks are just a few of the commonly known marks generally referred to as pigmented lesions and they occur on many areas of the face and body. Brown spots that are conspicuous detract from the skin’s natural beauty. Most brown spots that develop later in life are caused by over exposure to the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays.

With the development of advanced laser technologies, these annoying brown spots can be safely and effectively removed. The choice of technology used depends on many variables including your skin type, the size and number of spots and other associated conditions that you may want treated at the same time. The most well known therapies here are Intense Pulsed Light and Q switched lasers.

When we are looking for more comprehensive improvement in the skin, with improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores (and brown spots, of course), we recommend using the , IPL Lazer or Dermalogica’s Multi Vitamine Skin Peels for skin rejuvenation.

IPL- a non invasive, target specific, yet effective treatment with no downtime and minimal

complications.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common chronic condition primarily of the facial skin. It is common in the third and fourth decade of life, peaking at the age of 40 and 50 years. The causes of rosacea are still not identified but there is a heriditary component. The early stage rosacea is characterized by persistent redness and teleangiectasia (spider veins) predominantly of the cheeks frequently followed by papules (bumps) and papulopustules (pus containing bumps). Later, there may occur diffuse overgrowth of connective tissue and sebaceous glands. This can cause a enlargement of the nose, a so called rhinophyma.

Rosacea occurs in stages and may effect the eyes, most commonly resulting in blepharitis (inflammation of the lids) and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Also other parts beside the face such as the neck, chest, back and the scalp may be affected. The clinical appearance can be similar to acne.

Rosacea can be treated and controlled if medical advice is sought in the early stages. When left untreated, rosacea often gets worse and then becomes more difficult to treat. The two most common procedures for Rosacea include Pulsed Dye Laser (Vbeam Laser) and Photofacial using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

State of the art way to remove unwanted hair using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) tailored to your skin and hair colour.

In pursuit of smooth skin and a flawless complexion, laser hair removal is a welcome technology. There now exists a gentle, safe and effective means for the removal of unwanted hair for both women and men. A careful choice of technologies for this procedure and a facility dedicated to laser treatments will ensure a great outcome.

Laser Hair Removal works by selectively concentrating light energy in the hair follicle, leaving the surrounding skin unchanged. This comfortable procedure can be performed in as little as 15 to 30 minutes and you can return to regular activity immediately following. Laser hair removal can be performed on any area of the face or body and is faster and easier than other methods of hair removal. A series of treatments are provided at 4-6 week intervals to achieve treatment goals.

Laser surgery for leg veins

New technology in laser treatments can effectively treat spider veins in the legs of patients with all skin types. Laser surgery delivers intense pulses of light energy into the veins and this causes them to fade and disappear. Laser surgery appeals to some patients because it does not use needles.

• Laser treatments take about 20 minutes. The IPL lasers is a advanced laser for the treatment of leg veins. Depending on the severity of the veins, four to six treatments may be needed to achieve a treatment goal. There is some discomfort during the procedure but this is gone by the time clients leave the salon. Clients can return to normal activity right after treatment. For larger veins, over 3mm, other forms of therapy are indicated. For tiny veins IPL laser is the treatment of choice.

• It is not uncommon for sclerotherapy to be performed initially and then the laser is used to clean up the veins that have been resistant.

Further information on legs veins:

What factors make it more likely for a person to develop spider or varicose veins in the legs?• Increasing Age • Having family members with vein problems.• Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause or from the birth control pill. • Pregnancy. This is due to the increased amount of blood and pressure of the expanding uterus. • Obesity, leg injury, prolonged standing and other things that weaken vein valves

Why do varicose veins and spider veins usually appear in the legs?

• The force of gravity, the pressure of body weight, and the tough task of carrying blood from the legs to the heart are all responsible.

What are the signs of varicose veins?

• Aching pain • Easily tired legs • Leg heaviness • Swelling in the legs • Darkening of the skin (in severe cases) • Numbness in the legs • Itching or irritated rash in the legs

How can I prevent varicose veins and spider veins?

• Exercise regularly to improve your leg strength and circulation. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Do not cross your legs when sitting. • Elevate your legs when resting as much as possible. • Do not stand or sit for long periods of time. • Wear elastic support stockings and avoid tight clothing around the waist or legs• Eat a low-salt diet rich in high-fiber foods.

What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

• Spider veins, also called telangiectasias, are tiny visible vessels just underneath the skin. They develop most commonly on the face and legs. Varicose veins are distended veins beneath the skin. They may appear as bluish bumps and often cause discomfort. Those with unsightly varicose veins and aching pain often choose to have surgery to remove their varicose veins. If you have both varicose and spider veins, your varicose veins must be treated first. Treating spider veins first is not recommended because, in the presence of varicose veins, they are bound to return soon.

Dermalogica

It's been said that there is nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come. This maxim is proven daily in the success of Dermalogica, the "quiet revolution" in skin care with a huge following ranging from professional skin care therapists to Hollywood makeup artists.

The company was founded in Los Angeles in 1986 by Jane and Raymond Wurwand, who also founded The International Dermal Institute, the post-graduate training facility for professional skin care therapists which sets the industry standard for education. Today, all Dermalogica products are researched and developed by The International Dermal Institute, drawing upon the expertise of the school's worldwide network of educators.

Dermalogica's identity remains unmistakably distinct in an industry of "me too" brands. "We don't try to keep up with trends," says Jane Wurwand. "We are more interested in real innovation for real results. We are always pushing the envelope, raising the bar. We don't feel pressure to launch a dozen new products each year. We may launch only one or two, and only when we are absolutely confident that they will be the best, most effective in their category." Dermalogica products are available only through the recommendation of a professional skin care therapist.

Why use Sunscreen?

• The daily use of sunscreen is an important component to any skin care regimen.

• Proper sun protection will make a great difference in a person’s appearance today and for the future. Ultraviolet light is the primary cause of exogenous skin aging, wrinkles, blotchy, pigmented skin and skin cancer.

What is SPF?

• SPF represents the ability of a sunscreen to delay sun-induced redness. In theory, a person who applies an SPF 15 can stay out in the sun for fifteen times longer without incurring sunburn as compared to an individual not wearing sunscreen. Unfortunately, the studies with SPF pertain only to UVB, which is responsible for the immediate reddening from the sun as opposed to the effects of UVA, which are much later. Thus, use of sunscreen may not prevent all the harmful effects of the sun. And furthermore, no agent offers “sun block” as the name may imply.

Other terminology being utilized today is as follows: • Minimum Protection: SPF 2-12• Moderate Protection: SPF 12-30• Maximum Protection: SPF 30

Does it matter how thick sunscreen is applied?

• Yes. Recent studies estimate that the average person applies an inadequate amount of sunscreen, roughly 20-40% of the amount that should be applied. A useful rule of thumb is that people get one-third the protection that SPF states. Thus, one should use as high a level of SPF as can be tolerated and use it liberally.

When should sunscreen be applied?

• Sunscreen should be applied on a daily basis throughout the year, not just before going to the beach. The harmful effects of the sun is a year round phenomenon and is even an issue when one drives in a car as UVA rays penetrate glass. If one is going to the beach, however, to gain maximum protection, sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes prior to exposure. The exact time depends on the nature of the formulation being used and this information is beginning to be made available on the labels of the preparation.

Does sunscreen expire?

• Yes. Some sunscreen preparations actually have expiration dates printed on the label. In the absence of this information, one should throw out any sunscreen that is over 3 years old.

Are there any potential adverse reactions to sunscreens?

• It is rare to have a systemic reaction to sunscreen, however local reactions in the skin such as contact dermatitis, irritant and allergic dermatitis and phototoxic reactions are common. These may even occur in the absence of sun exposure. The most common ingredients to cause adverse reactions are PABA, benzophenones, cinnamates, and methoxydibenzoylmethane. Physical sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide have never been implicated in causing allergic reactions and therefore are suitable for individuals with a history of allergic reaction to other sunscreens.

Are products that combine insect repellent and sunscreens effective?

• This is a controversial topic today. Until proper studies are completed it is preferable to use separate products rather than the combination products.

Are all sunscreens of an equal SPF value equal?

• No. Sunscreens vary in the way they protect from the sun. There are physical sunscreens, chemical sunscreens, UVB absorbing sunscreens, UBA absorbing sunscreens and combination sunscreens. They differ not only in the agents used to block the sun but also in the vehicles used to deliver the active ingredients. Sunscreens come in different formulations such as lotions, creams, oils, gels and sticks. Not every formulation is suitable for a given person. Typically the higher SPF agents feel greasier and more opaque.

What does water resistant mean with respect to sunscreens?

• A sunscreen is considered ‘water resistant’ if the SPF is effective after 40 minutes of water immersion. Some sunscreens are labelled as ‘very water resistant’ but the term ‘water proof’ is being phased out as it in misleading. One must recognize that sunscreen needs to be reapplied regularly throughout the day to maintain maximal effectiveness even they are considered water resistant.

Can my Therapist help in the choice of sunscreen?

• The therapsits at Body Care are experienced in helping clients decide on a proper sunscreen suitable to their needs and skin type. They not only evaluate your skin and skin type but also the level of sun exposure, dermatological conditions that exist and past experience with sunscreens. The therapists at Body Care recommend sunscreens with low incidences of adverse reactions and products that are easy and comfortable to wear. In this way we are able to get maximum compliance with sunscreen utilization. Three popular sunscreen product lines we have chosen for this reason include Dermalogica, Environ and Guinot.
