“Prayer, Purpose and Praise”
September is already upon us. We've have heard the phrase "back to
school" numerous times with every kind of promotion. School is now back
in session. We have also enjoyed a long weekend as we celebrate the im-
portance of work.
The truth is that September brings a certain rhythm back to life and our
many pursuits. It is even true for the church too. This September at Archdale
United Methodist Church we have a variety of activities to assist us in pursu-
ing life to the fullest. Let me share just a few.
This Sunday evening, September 7, at 6:30 p.m., you are invited to
join us in the sanctuary for a special time of prayer. As I mentioned this past
Sunday, the word "united" in our church name is more than just a word. It is
a reminder of who we are to be as the body of Christ. One of the most basic
ways that we build unity is to join together in prayer. PRAYER is that im-
portant.
September 13 will be the Bush Hill Heritage Festival. As in years
past, Archdale UMC will be hosting a hospitality booth. We will share
complimentary bottles of water along with information about our church.
Volunteers are still needed to serve one-hour shifts during this important out-
reach event. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the free and uncondi-
tional love of Jesus Christ. That is our PURPOSE.
September 28 is Homecoming at Archdale. This year’s homecoming
preacher is Rev. Kim Collins. Rev. Collins is the director of youth and chil-
dren's ministries at Christ United Methodist Church in High Point. A covered
dish meal will follow worship. Make an effort to invite a friend for this spe-
cial day. It will be a great day of PRAISE.
September is a full month. So let's make sure and devote ourselves to
PRAYER. Let's pursue God's special PURPOSE. And let's PRAISE him
wherever we are.
Stuart

or call the church office.
3. Please invite people that used to go to the church to come back and
celebrate with us on September 28.

Wow! What a fun filled and Godly summer. Over the last three months, the youth have
spent time together learning about God’s Will for their lives, helped complete three (3) local
mission projects, served the Cherokee tribe in the Sarah Smoker community, attended a youth
revival at Fort Caswell, and much more. It has been such an amazing summer that only one
word can do it justice – JESUS!
As I write this update, I remember standing in a circle with a group of students singing “Oh
How He Loves.” What an awesome feeling to let go of our worries and give ourselves freely
to worship God. In fact, one of my favorite ways to connect with God is through listening to
and singing contemporary worship. Our community is blessed to have two contemporary
Christian radio stations that I am able to listen to each day. Knowing that music is such a pow-
erful expression of our faith, it has been one of my goals to find ways to
incorporate music into the youth group as much as possible.
By God’s great provision, He has blessed us with some new friends
Jesse Teal and his fiancée Ashley Garner. Jesse and Ashley have offered
their musical abilities to us and have dedicated themselves to helping us as
we embark on contemporary worship with our youth group. It has been so
exciting to see how God can present himself through a group of youth and
a guitar, and I am excited to see how He moves in the future.

Censer and Incense
A censer (or thurible) is a vessel commonly
used by Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catho-
lic churches, as well as some Protestant ones,
to burn incense during worship, often on spe-
cial occasions. Censers come in many sizes,
shapes and designs. A worship leader may
swing a chain censer to waft the fragrant in-
cense smoke over the congregation during a
procession or benediction. As incense burns in
a censer and smoke wafts upward, it symbol-
izes prayers of the faithful, floating to God.
"May my prayer be set before you like in-
cense; may the lifting up of my hands be like
the evening sacrifice" (Psalm 141:2, NIV).

TO LOVE IS TO LISTEN
Listening is one of the most
powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. In Stephen Ministry, a great deal of time is spent in teaching and practicing lis-tening skills because of its importance as a care giving tool. You too can become a more caring listener by understanding and applying these six listening concepts from Stephen Ministry training:
Listening is active Listening takes patience Listening involves more than just words Good listeners aren’t completely silent Listening happens over time Listening is confidential Listening is a great gift we can give to one an-other, and one we can all use in order to make Archdale United Methodist a more car-ing place.
Our Stephen Ministers are ready to listen!
Dear Friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:11-12
