Work Smarter, Not Harder: Impression-Making Designed for Dentists

Solving the Impression Compromise
Dentistry is practiced in the real world. Despite advances in impression material, impression quality continues to be a challenge as the situations dentists encounter are seldom ideal. In addition, the delivery systems that are frequently used to place low viscosity materials do not readily provide the precision required of the procedure, instead relying on borrowed systems. The lack of clear clinical advantages across both material and delivery has required compromise from clinicians, risking poor impression quality, lost productivity, and ergonomic strain.
THE CHALLENGES
• Problems with impression material include tears and voids at the margins, along with unclear work and set times.
• Laboratories are receiving poor-quality impressions.
• Low viscosity material is dispensed via old technology, with inherent ergonomic and control issues.
• Clinicians need to work harder to get results under these conditions.

of laboratories list impression quality as #1 challenge with dentists
Clinicians are often aware of some of these challenges, but they may unknowingly make compromises to work around them. Instead, they need an impression solution that meets their real-world needs and even exceeds expectations consistently. It’s time for clinicians to reevaluate if their system (material and delivery) is truly working for them.

Achieving Precision and Control
HOW CAN AN IMPRESSION DELIVERY SYSTEM DESIGN HELP TO OVERCOME DENTAL IMPRESSION CHALLENGES?
Unfortunately, traditional 50mL dispensers require the dentist to work as much as 8 inches away from the impression site and to apply approximately 7.5 pounds of pressure to pull the trigger. The systems are heavy and clunky, often requiring clinicians to move out of neutral positions to capture an impression. These and other inefficiencies reduce control, which can impair the procedure.
INEFFICIENCIES BUILT IN: CURRENT 50ML DISPENSER OPTION
• Distance to prepared tooth
• Center of balance
• Hand position
• Wrist movement
• Total weight
• Force requirement
• Lack of stabilization
• Range of motion
• Material waste
• Visibility
• Access
For optimal impression-making, the extrusion tip must be fully under the control of the dentist to a very finite degree—equal to the control required for the preparation of the tooth. Throughout the process, the delivery tip needs to be in a continuous subversive state in the material, pushing forward with steady control around the preparation margins and interproximally, which allows for precision of extrusion into the sulci around the full circumference of the prepared tooth.
The process can become complicated with the high grip force required for typical 50mL delivery systems. Dentists often have to control the impression material extrusion tips in ways that force awkward, out-of-balance, and ineffective positions in order to keep the tip submerged and avoid unintended tip movement due to hand movement or bumping against a tooth surface.

Ergonomics Add Up
OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR CAREERS, CLINICIANS MAY SPEND AS MANY AS 60,000 HOURS IN IMPROPER BODY POSITIONS, IMPACTING THEIR WORK AND SAFETY.
• Dental work should happen as much as possible in neutral positions.
• Dentists should limit hand, arm, and body movement.
• Improper positions are often due to complex equipment to obtain “optimal view of teeth.”
Current impression delivery options can lead to poor body position, along with lack of stabilization and control, because they are designed around the material and not the procedure. Often heavy, their continued use can cause physical strain and force ergonomically awkward body positioning that risks injury to achieve control and ensure adequate delivery results.

DESIGNED WITH CLINICIANS AND PROCEDURES IN MIND, DIGIT POWER DISPENSER OVERCOMES THE CHALLENGES OF TRADITIONAL 50ML AND BACK-FILLED SYRINGE DELIVERY SYSTEMS BY IMPROVING THE PROCESS FROM THE START.
• up to 63% closer to the prepared tooth
• up to 42% of the weight of 50mL dispensers
• up to 84% less force required to dispense
The digit Power® Dispenser is a radically different way to dispense low viscosity impression material by enhancing accuracy through optimized control during delivery of the syringe material.
A System that Works with You
The digit Power Dispenser reduces the key features of delivery systems associated with poor ergonomics (shape, distance, weight, physical strain, and complexity) to ensure control. With the distance between the hand and the tooth prep shortened to only 3 inches, there is considerably less risk of tip movement while dispensing, resulting in a more accurate flow of wash material around the tooth prep.
In addition, digit Power Dispenser's design creates a neutral holding position in the space between thumb and pointer finger, reducing muscle complexity. With a unique pen grip and power delivery, it allows clinicians to assume a more neutral position and focus on what matters: control and precision.
CLINICIAN BENEFITS• Increased control of device and intraoral tip
placement to help reduce potential errors• Improved ergonomics and control due to less
physical effort during extrusion• Better access and visibility• Enhanced precision • Built-in timers for convenience and better
compliance
Clinicians will find that by using the optional foot control, the placement of the extrusion tip and impression material is separated from force application: a huge advance in impression-making due to the complete removal of hand force to dispense.

Redefining Material Performance
Impression material performance matters most intraorally, where hydrophilicity and tear strength matter most.
Intraoral hydrophilicity (the ability to work in presence of moisture) improves detail capture from the moment the material is dispensed and demonstrates better wettability of oral surfaces.
Voids at the margins are among the most common impression errors. To prevent complications, clinicians need an impression material that works well in presence of moisture while in the mouth, not later.
Intraoral tear strength is critical, as material placed into the sulcus, natural anatomic undercuts, and flaws must be retrieved in one piece. Tear strength of material while in thin cross-sections and when being removed from the mouth is when it matters.
Tears remain a leading error in impressions. Clinicians should be cognizant of the clinical/intraoral tear strength of their material.
86% of clinicians want a material that works better in the presence of moisture, making this the highest sought-after product improvement
74% of clinicians want a material that is better suited for all the cases they see in their office, not just the ideal ones
The completely redesigned Aquasil® Ultra+ Smart Wetting Impression Material features state-of-the-art intraoral hydrophilicity and intraoral tear strength to deliver better-than-ever results by optimizing performance in all areas, not just one. The clinician no longer needs to compromise between wettability, tear strength, speed, and delivery options.
