description(abstract): BDDF (Bridging Digitally Design&Fabrication) is a thesis that investigates the intro-duction of digital fabrication techniques into the field of ar-chitecture and its impact on the design process. The evolu-tion of digital design is shortly analysed and the interaction of computation with architectural design is further exam-ined.The effects on the design process are traced, and the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the available fabrication technology are identified. The thesis hints for an emerging design and construction mentality delineated by the documentation and critical eval-uation of a selection of both experimental and built projects. As an experimental output of this research the develop-
ment of a parametric 3d model based on a fully constrained motion, called ‘Bennet linkage’, was chosen. The initial geomtery was further developed and evolved into a kinetic lighting artefact that adapts to enviromental parameters. This project was funded by the IKEA foundation in Swiz-erland and was on show at the Museum of Modern Art in Laussanne during September 2012

description: The aim of this 4 week intensive workshop is to realize in 1:1 scale a structure that leads away from the conventional space frame typologies and enables a new design scope, which generates robust, inherently re-dundant aggregations with multiple load paths and connec-tion opportunities. A script was developed in python where the ground surface and canopy surface are defined. The script then iteratively tiles accordingly the surface and adds columns and iterative bracings based on a user input. The structure was constrcuted with the aid of a kuka robotic arm ,which was cutting (certain lengths) and drilling (according to orientation and the neighbours) the plastic water pipes.

description: Phototropia was a project focusing on the ap-plication of samrt materials in an architectural context. It merges self-made electro-active polymers, screen-printed electroluminescent displays, eco-friendly bioplastics and thin-film dye-sensitized solar cells into an autonomous installation that produces all its required energy from sunlight and responds to user presence through mov-ing and illuminating elements. The generated energy is stored in batteries below the platform and then distrib-uted via microcontrollers to the respective elements.
Phototropia finds its inspiration in participative and transient systems, proposed by visionaries like Yona Friedman or Con-
stant Nieuwenhuys paired with a naive curiosity for self-made (smart) materials and an aversion towards mechanistic kinet-ic systems. It is a proposal for an experimental architecture that can decay while actively being renewed, as a response to our times of tremendous globalization, increased connec-tivity and digital identity within our information based society.

description: Swarm scapes is a project that was devel-oped within a 4 week programming (Processing) module on swarm intelligence algorithms. Its point of origin lies in the belief that we should no longer think in terms of individual elements but rather look into their properties and base our organizational scheme on one comprehensive gesture which incorporates diversity. In this study swarming behav-iors are implemented in order to investigate the possibilities of a more fluent, bottom-up approach towards architectural structures. The swarm/flock is a field phenomenon, defined by precise and simple local conditions and is relatively indifferent to the overall form and extent. A small flock and a large flock are characterized by the same fundamental structure. Variations and obstacles in the environment are accom-
modated by flow adjustments. Flock behavior eventually converges towards roughly similar configurations, not in terms of fixed type, but as a cumulative result of localized behavioral patterns. The rehabilitation of the volume of a quarried landscape is adopted as a case study herein. A specific quarry site forms the swarm’s environment and is imported in the form of a point cloud. By switching between different scales, various spatial effects and assemblages can be quickly and com-prehensively examined. The same information can be transformed in numerous ways without altering any of the structuring parameters. The geometry is topologically generated based on specific information that could nevertheless assume alternate forms.

description: The project was developed with the aim to explore the relationship between design, various methods of generative computer modeling, the importance of mate-riality (in this case Ytong - aerated concrete) in the digital age and the physical representation of information using CAD/CAM devices (in this case a Kuka robot). The brief required for thinking beyond Parametrization and explor-ing the computer as a tool for generating an aesthetically appealing structure, which couldn’t be done manually. The design concept was based on a Reaction-Diffusion algorithm, programmed in Processing, in order to create a three-dimensional self-standing structure. Design was adjusted towards a voxelization of the structure, due to
the limited cutting-angle of the robot (45°), a simpler setup process and a more homogeneous and smoother surface. The orientation of the 1148 individual bricks was adjusted depending on the overall curvature of the shape. The result-ing elments were then intersected with the main geometry and grouped into several modules depending on load and assemblability. Fabrication with the seven-axis robot was developed and continuously improved – the jigsaw, spe-cialized blades and clamping mechanisms.Final structure consisted of six separated elements. Each element was built manually by glueing digitally fabricated bricks together. 350 kg of specialized Ytong glue plus an additonal 50 kg of stong cement glue were used.

description: Crystal decoded is my diplom project, whose objective is the rehabilitation of a quarry around the area of Imetus in Athens. A new way of approaching the quarried-technicalised landscape, along with a research on crystal struc-tures were the ignition points of this diplom.
Through the development of scripting (Rhinoscript) an attempt was made to simulate the crystal growth, the most basic process in the creation of a mineral, param-etrized with architectural terms (program, construction limitations, orientation, views). Additionaly the crystal structure of a specific mineral (limestone in this case) was translated into the structural componentThe final algorithm, based on the L-systems (Linde-mayer systems), asks the user to choose the crystal structure and a series of site limitations. The result of the script was used as the basis for further manipula-tion of the project.
The proposal includes the creation of a suburban met-ropolitan parc, that expands on the three levels of the former quarry. The suggested uses are the following: offices of the forest rangers, parking, botanical garden, climbing centre, exhibition areas, area of alternative mountainous activities, skatepark. The uses are not thought as fixed but rather as something generic that could change along with mutations on the site (i.e. ex-pansion of the quarry) and consequently the structure. A circulation system that yields from the evolution of the quarry ramps, connects the three levels and offers multile views and ways of experiencing the landscape.

description: APO MECHANES was an intensive 2.5 week computational design studio. A studio dedicated to furthering the techniques and concepts of algorithmic processes as means for design and fabrication, apo-mechanes was a a very good chance to investigate the modes of algorithmic and machining processes in archi-tectural design. At present computational techniques are predominantly employed in the optimization, rationalization or surface
decoration of more traditionally created wholes. This research will instead focus on the inherent potential of computation to generate space and of algorithmic procedures to engage self-organization in the design process. All participants were asked to create their own custom algorithms (Rhinoscript) leading to the fabrica-tion (CNC cutter) of working prototypes appropriate to their research trajectories. The final result was an assem-bly of approximately 100 flat components (8mm MDF).

description: Our proposal is a leaf like structure that from a distance it resembles an organic landscape like a congealed statue. As you approach however, it becomes clear that this is an artefact. Its function has yet to be ascertained.Phyllotaxis, the hellicoidal and spiral structural patterns, that one frequently encounters in plants was the main focus for this project. With the aid of paramet-ric design we generated succesive iterations of this self organised structural system, that were further manipulated to obtain architectural qualities.
The phyllotactic structure is further reinforced in critical points of tension with straight rods, that operate as semi transpparent dividing elements. The positioning of the rods, based on the visual effect of the moire pat-terns, strengthen the structural behaviour of the follie while enriching its spatial quality. The whole structure is exposed as it happens on a leaf whereas, our proposed skin would be any kind of vegetation. As a result, it becomes a living organism that blossoms and retracts among the plants that grow on it.

description: Located in the business center of the Chi-nese capital, the new Louis Vuitton flagship store is, we believe, the optimal place to establish a new relationship between the French luxury brand and Chinese culture. The mediator of this recontextualization is calligraphy.Considered the highest visual expression of Chinese cul-ture, calligraphy achieves the merging of past and present in the brushstroke. In its analogy to natural phenomena, without direct representation, the brush form remains eternally contemporary. Our proposal seeks to achieve a rich, multilayered visual effect through the implementation of this unique art form. The façade is conceived as a white
canvas on which the abstract brush stroke is applied. The areas of the stroke reflect the intense movement of the area, literal (passing cars and pedestrians) and metaphori-cal (economic development). The stroke emerges through a series of stainless steel strips with undulating profiles, shaped according to the intensity of the ink. Over the course of the day, the sun creates a shifting play of light and shadow across this three-dimensional “painting”, even as in space the surface’s transparency changes with the angle of the viewer. At night, artificial lighting takes over and the façade becomes a spectacular, abstract, screen.

description: Wall Gallery is an adaptation of an exist-ing two storey building into an exhibition space as well as a leisure space, located in downtown Beijing between the Worker’s Stadium and Sanlitun area. By integrating a chinese restaurant on the first floor and a cafe at ground floor, the aim was create an appealing profile so that local could come into contact with cultural events easier. The area around the building is transformed into a chinese sculptural garden inviting the passers by, from the busy neighborhood. The concrete structure is being preserved while some extra area is added on the ground floor as well
as a rooftop extension, hosting a private clubhouse for the clients. Because of these programmatic requirements the facade was offset, where needed, resulting in a faceted twisted volume. The almost opaque metallic skin, made out of aluminum clad panels has perforations located on critical points create timed moments of darkness and light and produce a peaceful space, that evokes elementary feelings and perception. As project architect we developed the basic programmatic layout with principal architect Zhu Pei , while with the Project manager Geoff Hughes we moved on to the design development

description: Minsheng MoCa art museum is a large scale exhibition space located at the northern edge of the cultur-ally-rich grounds of 798 district in Chaoyang, Beijing. Our proposal, which was done in collaboration with the former chairman of Guggenheim Museum in NY, Thomas Krens, includes the re-adaptation of a 60.000sqm television fac-tory into a contemporary art space and the addition of an observation tower as well as two urban plazas. The existing concrete structure is being mostly preserved apart from some subtractions, where ramps and resting places are being introduced. The roofing truss structure of the
former factory line, an uninterrupted space sizing 300m in length, is being raised in order to provide sufficient light for the main exhibition hall. An elevated urban plaza, as well as the integration of artist workshops at the back of the museum is a gesture towards opening the museum towards the public and making it a living organism. As part of the core design team part of my tasks was to develop programmatic concepts on the one hand as well provide design schemes for the exhibition spaces on the other hand. The museum is currently under construction

description: The original structure of the national art museum of china (NAMOC) built in 1962, houses one of the country’s largest art collections and has played host to some of the influential exhibitions as recorded in contem-porary chinese history. the current plans are to move the institution into a new building, situated within a designated ‘art district’ on the central axis of the 2008 olympic site. Answering to an international competition to design a new home for NAMOC, studio Pei Zhu’s proposal is city-sized institution where the inclusion of public space is empha-sized. part of a larger six volume master plan. The firm’s
concept combines an elevated public square which is pro-tected by a floating mega volume above. Studio Pe Zhu’s design is organized into three layers, where programs are divided by each level.the elevated ground floor operates independently from the museum in off hours. above this, a 20,000 square meter urban plaza program acts as the main gallery for permanent art collections and exhibitions. description: This project draws its inspiration from the activity of confession, and attempts to produce a tec-tonic translation of this experience in a contemporary context. The screen in the confessional room serves as divider and ensures ultimate privacy while by do-ing that becomes a means of liberation for the person confessing. Our proposal seeks to re-contextualize such a tectonic element as a freestanding piece of fur-niture, which aims to achieve interesting light and ray-tracing effects while allowing visibility only from certain
angles. Traditionally such screens were constructed by repeating prefabricated elements, whose arrangement defined the level of transparency. Following this para-digm our screen wall consists of 80 laser cut wooden panels, which stand by interlocking sequentially. The panels are varying in shape achieving by that a gradi-ent light and visibility effect from the one to the other side. “confessional wall” was designed and fabricated from Topotheque for “hybrids” design exhibition at Kalos&Klio Showroom in Thessaloniki.

kind: Urban Furniture Design/ Fabricationdate: September 2011status: Completed
description: “Ripple Bench” is an experiment on an alternative approach of standardized pieces of urban equipment for sitting and resting in the greek urban en-vironment. Basically, it is an attempt to attribute a com-plex and performative geometry on an everyday object like the urban bench. The materialization of such de-sign, takes advantage of modern fabricating techniques and does not suspend the possibility of the mass pro-duction of such an object. Particularly, a doubly curved surface is generated which allow for two seating possi-bilities. The surface is analyzed in a rhomboidal pleating
pattern which add structural strength and is then divid-ed in sections, which are then developed in flat pieces that can be laser cut. The design intention, apart from searching alterna-tives ways of simplifying the materialization of complex geometries, is the creation of an intricate artifact that provokes the user to reconsider everyday objects and hold a different stance towards the urban scape, that surrounds him/her. As part of the Topotheque team I developed the script (Rhinoscript), designed and fabri-cated (in collaboration with KUH) the final object.

Between diversion and re-finement, noble and industrial materials, apparent mount-ing and precious finish, Topotheque expresses its dual style and writes a usage scenario faithful to the spirit of the greek café. This project was designed for profession-als who have a short break between business as well as those who want to enjoy a cup of coffee between their shopping walk. The selected materials ascribe a classic character while the aperiodic penrose tiling pattern , which
is applied on different elements imbue a modern essence. Furthermore, the alternating flooring materials (wood and marble) signify different spaces of the cafe, while the contrast of black and white colors on the walls and the details graphically outline the architectural lines. Most of the furniture was designed or customized specifically for the cafe and is arranged to create a variety atmospheres within an undivided space. As part of the Topotheque de-sign team we realized the interior, and most of furniture as well as the graphic identity of the cafe.

description: Filippas is a branch a small chain of restau-rants in Ioanninia. The client comissioned us for the reno-vation of one fast food restaurant, located in old tradi-tional corner building, in the historic center of the city. The brief was asking for an interior design as well as a new visual identity, that would underscore the new character of the brand, while respecting the character of the sur-rounding area. The basic restrictions, apart from the tight budget and schedule, was the really narrow trapezoidal plan, the existing ventilation system and the grill station
that could not be removed. The removal of a stone col-umn in the middle allowed for better space articulation and opened the store to the street. Following the irregu-lar shapes of the plan and the ventilation we created a surface that would partially hide the equipment without sacrificing valuable space or volume . The surface was then horizontally contoured and analysed in linear wood-en rods, that are held with bracing frames that run along the surface. The construction was realised manually by a traditional carpenter under my supervision.

The table is part of a wider series of case studies. The implemented algorithm (rhinoscript) takes as input any surface and after setting certain parameters (grid density, material thickness etc) , it out-puts a labeled 2d design that can be adjusted and cut
from a flat sheet using laser or water jet technology. The ribs can be assembled easily by non specialized per-sons. In this case the initial doubly curved surface ensures stability while the grid like stucture can serve as shelves. The site is a medieval his-torical building located in a developing part of the city of Mainz. The proposal tries to materially reflect the maturing and ripening process of wine by introducing an scenographic architectural language into the industrial context. By integrating a novel structure which serves mainly as the circulation hub with small exhibition and rest spaces adjacent to it , the aim is to navigate the visitors through a continu-ous route that can let them experience (smell&see) wine as well as get informed on all the related processes. The faceted structure cuts through the existing building volume in order to create double height volumes and form an iconographic scenery equivalent to the long history of wine. The historical facade of the building is preserved in-tact and renovated while only a hint of the new intervention appears at the enhance in the form of a canopy and a staircase. As part of the competition team, during my internship, I was responsible for the design of the wine rooms but main for the lay outing, model building and production of images.

description: The Radisson SAS Iveria Hotel celebrated its grand opening on 2009. The project is about a conver-sion of a 60’s hotel high rise building into a five star hotel. The goal was to transform an urban landmark building of the so-called international style by anchoring it in the lo-cal environment of the city centre and by reconnecting it to the world of today. I participated in the construction phase of the project and my main tasks was the devel-opment of shop drawings and designing further interior details needed for the construction company as well as doing site supervision once a month

description: This furniture design was developed for Graft architects during my internship at their of-fice. The brief included the design of a modular piece of furniture for the reception space in front of the meeting room in the Berlin office. The proposal is a white- box with discreet dark slits that can serve as a showcase or podium when its parts are put together, but mainly functions as seating when its pieces are brought apart. I designed “Graft moebel” and pro-duced all the details, while its fabrication by a local company.

description: Doma is a former clock-tower room that is situat-ed on a terrace of a 19th century eclecticist building in the centre of Thessaloniki/ Greece. The brief was asking for the conversion of the space into a jewellery workshop. The limited space avail-able (7sqm) ordered for a highly ergonomic design, while the aim was to design modular DIY furniture that could be disassembled and transported in the future. The proposal offers two working posts,a seating opportunity and plenty of storage space for the tools, as well as a foldable bed. The whole project was based on “bricollage” (urban recycling) due to the low budget available. The close relation between design and execution, as we had to carry out the construction in 2 weeks, along with the experience of materiality tranfromations (from leftovers into furniture) were the most construtive points in this project.
