FLIPPING BACK THE YEARS
WINTON HERALD 20-1-1935
MAIN STREET TRANSFORMATION
The gradual change being brought in Elderslie Street by the Main Roads Board was marked
during the week by the uprooting of the lamp posts which stood at the intersection of
Oondooroo and Werna Streets. These lamps were of the fuel oil burning variety, mounted on
iron posts set in substantial square concrete bases. These were erected in October 1918 and
operated until the beginning of 1926 when the electric lighting plant began to function.
Since they have been allowed to stand and proceed very serviceable in compelling what traffic
to follow the correct side of the road when taking these corners.
Some residents also used the flat concrete stands as seats and many contentious subjects
have been thrashed out there. It is understood traffic mounds will be laid down at these
intersections, but they will not give the same “touch” as the old functional lamp posts.
WINTON HERALD - 1928
In 1928 Walt Disney’s famous Invention-The Mickey Mouse Cartoon arrived at the Lyric Open
Air, Earthen Floor Picture Theatre (with a mini golf course) which opened in Oondooroo Street
behind Willets café on the corner of Elderslie Street and Oondooroo Streets.
To advertise coming attractions-apart from “posters” on Bill Boards (promptly stripped off
and eaten by goats) Gidyea Taylor, of whom the children were fond of, used to carry
Billboards over his shoulders (front and back) advertising and heralding his approach by
ringing his bell. Sometimes he dressed up to suit the particular attraction. These “town criers”
as they were known, were in most towns. A Miss Clancy played for the silent movies.
The Lyric Silent Movie Theatre closed down when Mr Menzels at the Royal Theatre started
showing motion pictures.
WINTON HERALD - 19th November 1947
An old Winton Landmark was pulled down by carpenters last week.
This was the Dicks Creek Hotel, located near some sixty miles from Winton-Kynuna Road. This
building stood there for many years, and served firstly the travellers on horseback, and they
catered for shearing teams.
These buildings were owned by Corfield & Fitzmaurice who intends to build a shearing shed at
Mountain View with the material obtained from the site.
