EDUCATION CORNER
cDIS ovERIESRespecting Abilities. Reaching for Opportunities. Realizing Dreams.ISSUE 90/ WINTER 2011
Have you ever asked yourselfwhy some organizations are
healthier than others?
Nothing is more important to
the short and long term health of
a business than leadership training
and development, says Bill Gjetson,
a specialist in developing emerging
leaders.
At Hammer, we stand on the
shoulders of a visionary leader,
Alvina Hammer who, in 1923, acted on her
belief that people with disabilities had the
right to lead full lives in a loving atmosphere.
Her leadership continues to inform a culture
steeped in action and service. Fast forward to Tim Nelson, also a true
servant leader. Tim, our former CEO, has been dearly missed since his
death last summer but his contributions live on at Hammer. Tim, Alvina
and many leaders over the years have historically worked to pay it
forward by developing leadership talent in others. We have all been
mentored as leaders to serve with a heartfelt commitment to Hammers
mission. As a result, our senior management teams have developed as
a strong cadre of leaders.
How do we ensure that we have a steady, self-renewing stream of
leaders? In 2005, we launched our first leadership readiness program
for our house managers called the Boot Camp-Leadership Series. The
title speaks to one of our grounding philosophies: never lose sight of the
frontline in service and connection to our mission.
Leadership talent is and will remain thedifferentiator between organizations that
succeed and those that do not. BillGjetson
Bill Gjetson is

in the
development
of emerging
leaders. Bill
has over 30 years of experience
in teaching and coaching and
is currently a facilitator for HRConnection. He has taught
classes in human resources and
leadership for Metro University,
the University of Minnesota,
and the College of Continuing
Education at the University of
Minnesota. Bill holds masters
degrees from the University of
Wisconsin in history and the
University of Minnesota in human
resources.
Leadership Training via Lucy and Charlie Brown
Lucy is upset. She tells Charlie Brown, Everywhere you go you seem to run into phonies.
The people you think are sincere usually turn out not to be, and the people you think arent
sincere, usually turn out to BE sincere! Lucy asks: The question is how you tell the phonies
from the realies?
Good question! At the heart of The Next Step program is the premise that authentic
leaders are not phonies but are instead realies. But how do you become authentic, genuine,
and real as a leader when faced with the demands and pressures of organizational life?
During The Next Step Program, participants are asked to reflect on questions about their life
story. As they probe into their past and create their life story, they are able to discern a path
forward, a way to remain true to their purpose and lead authentically. Along the way, they learn
how to tell the phonies from the realies.Working with Hammer
I met Tim Nelson through my wife, Jean, and was immediately struck by how he could focus his
attention and be absolutely present to the person he was talking to. I subsequently learned more
about the kind of leader he was and the spirited team he built. He reminded me of the best boss I
ever worked for, George Scarborough, Principal of Armstrong High School. My wife encouraged me
to contact Tim and see if he was interested in having me work with his staff. As a result, I was invited
to present my program, The Next Step, to six Hammer managers in early 2011.
Getting to the Heart of Leadership
Since its inception, the Boot
Camp-Leadership Series has grown
and been enhanced to include
peer-to-peer learning groups and
additional follow-up courses. This
peer group then orchestrates their
own meetings to engage in dialogue
and problem-solving, helping to
sustain accountability and support.
I was introduced to the peer-to-
peer concept by my mentor, Bill Gjetson
(see below for more about Bill). He believes
leaders learn best when they are working on
their own real-time priorities and problems.
By providing a safe place for discussion,
a peer learning group enables leaders to develop in ways that are not
otherwise possible.
The Authentic Leadership Program, referenced on P. 2 in the CEO
column and below in the Education Corner, is a new addition to our
leadership development series which affords seasoned leaders the
opportunity for continued personal and professional
development. We are looking forward to broadening the
reach of this signature program to include all leaders at
Hammer. This program emphasizes the importance of
developing strong leaders who know themselves from
the inside out, a legacy to embrace for all time.

Authentic Leadership The Next Step
We lost a truly authentic leader when
Tim Nelson, our CEO,
passed away suddenly
in August of this year.Aswe continue to recover fromthe loss of our leader and
friend, we have grown in ourappreciation for the strongand vital organization whichhe created.
A key element toHammers current strength
is the emphasis Tim placed on developingleadership throughout the organization.
Earlier this year, we embarked on a newform of leadership development called AuthenticLeadership The Next Step, referenced on page1 of this newsletter. This approach recognizesnot only what a person brings to the tableprofessionally but also how we develop as leadersas a result of our personal life experiences.
As part of the process, six leaders fromHammer gathered to share some signicantpersonal experiences and learned more about theimpact those experiences had on our professionallives. I found it to be a truly extraordinaryexperience. I came to understand that throughsome personal difculties, I learned to value moredeeply the differences and unique talents we eachbring to our leadership styles.
We have made a commitment to continuewith this vision of leadership development andto replicate the process with other leadersthroughout Hammer. I believe that as westrengthen who we are as leaders, we will createnew models for greater independence and ways tovalue the needs and talents of the men, women, and children we support.
In Tims words: People with disabilities, supported by their families and dedicatedprofessionals, now hold a new vision for theirlives - one in which they are afforded their fullrights, they are respected and valued for the giftsthey bring to the community, and their desires anddreams for self-direction are honored. It is my hope
that this vision will not be lost, but built upon. *
LbhArstrog InterimCEO* From an article by Tim Nelson published in March 2011 by Minnesota
Health Care News entitled: A World of Possibility Broadening
ParticipationBenets People withDisabilities.
How Hammer Got to GreatI recently attended a great conference hosted by the
Minnesota Planned Giving Council. For two days, I
learned from expert professionals about wills, trusts,
annuities and IRA rollovers. The presenters inspired us with
stories about how great nonprots become great.
While soaking in their wisdom, I came to believe, once
again, that Hammer is one of the great ones.Hammer got to great by doing just what these experts
suggested: we have inspired others to do something worthwhile and of lasting importance out
of a shared passion a desire for all people who live with disabilities to live satisfying lives.
People connect to Hammers mission for a variety of reasons. You may have a family
member who is thriving because of devoted staff members in our homes or you may be a
volunteer who feels energized by interacting with someone we serve. Whatever your reasons,
I trust you share my desire to ensure the people we serve live life to the fullest of their abilities.
A planned gift is an amazing way to feel were contributing something of lasting importance
to Hammers mission. A bequest in your will or a beneciary designation on your insurance
policy or retirement account is an uncomplicated way to make a gift, especially if cash gifts are
difcult for you at this time.
Your planned gift to Hammer is one very signicant way you can leave a legacy to fund
Hammers future success. Hammers giving guide on our web site is rich with information
about planned gifts. To learn more, go online to www.hammer.org/giving/givingguide or contact
me at 952.277.2433.

Lynn Mary Aase September 23, 1947 April 5, 2011Lynn Mary Aase lived at Hammer for over 40 years. She loved her work atOpportunity Partners and was employed there for 35 years. Lynn enjoyed herfamily and friends and her big sister, Karole, her devoted conservator. Lynn lovedto go bowling, to movies and out to dinner. She especially enjoyed spending timewith her best friend and long-time housemate, Paul. Summers were her favoritetime of year and she often spent a week at Camp Friendship.

IN MEMORY
Harry Caloviras2/10/1954 - 12/26/2010
Harry Caloviras was athome, surrounded byhis friends and family, when he passed awayin December last year. His unexpected passing
was especially difcult foreveryone who supportedhim at Hammer for the past 16 years.
Harry had very special way of relating to the people heloved. He would ask people towrite phrases or statements hethought of on a piece of paper. ThenHarry would ask them to read thephrases out loud always adding thewords HAVE FUN! at the end. Hedelighted in hearing phrases like,Harry will go to Grand Casino andHAVE FUN! or, Harry will go tocamp and HAVE FUN! We will missyou dearly, Harry.

I came to understand that throughsome personal difculties, I learned to
value more deeply the differences and
unique talents we each bring to our
leadership styles.
In our 2011 Fall Appeal, we shared a new giving opportunity with you, the
Tim Nelson Legacy Fund, in honor of our beloved CEO who passed away
suddenly in August. Tims family and Hammer leaders initiated this fund to honor
his memory. By designating your gifts to the Tim Nelson Legacy Fund, you will
be a part of innovative projects that support Hammers mission into the future.
Please help us carry on Tims legacy. Make a gift to Hammer today.

WelcomeNewVolunteers:
Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim Heaven, Heaven, Heaven, Heaven!
These were the words of Wentworth House resident,
Mark, at the Hammer-wide memorial service for Tim
Nelson. Mark has some difculty communicating verbally
but his message was clear as he took the microphone. In
his own way, Mark spoke for all of us, thanking Tim and
acknowledging his lifes work.
Tim was a very special person who led by example.
He was devoted to serving Hammer clients. His life was
dedicated to their lives. He focused on abilities, not disabilities
and inspired all of us to do the same.
I rst had the opportunity to meet Tim several years ago
through my Hammer volunteer work at Holy Name Church.
Teacher Celebrates 25 Years at Hammer
An immigrant from Norway, Jenny Malmgren served
as a housemother at Hammer from 1929 until her
retirement in 1972. After her retirement, she returned to
Oslo, Norway where she passed away on May 11, 1984.
According to Evelyn Carlson, There were very few
people as dedicated and trustworthy as Mrs. Malmgren
and many residents can trace their upbringing to her kind
care and counsel. Jenny Malmgren gave 43 years ofservice to Hammer.

Over the years, we became closer and he encouraged me to
join the Hammer Board.
Ive never met anyone as gracious as Tim. When Tim
thanked you for helping, he really meant it. His words were
sincere, genuine and meaningful. I learned some lasting life
lessons from Tim and I am a better person for having known
him.
Tims legacy will remain with Hammer, with those who are
served by the organization, with those of us who work and
volunteer here and everyone who has welcomed Hammer
into their lives. May we all follow Tims example and do
everything we can to serve with the passion and devotion he

In our last issue, we introduced you to Becky who lives with CerebralPalsy and Arthrogryposis. Becky always dreamed of traveling to New YorkCity. Her dream came true last month through the combined efforts of thestaff of Hammer Travel and the generosity of Rory Albanese, an ExecutiveProducer of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Here are some highlights from that amazingexperience.
New York City! Becky roared withexuberance as she savored the experienceof being in Central Park on a sunny day inOctober. She was living a lifelong dream andfelt like she was on top of the world!
With the help of Hammer Travels tripleaders, Becky and ve other individualswith developmental disabilities had a blastexploring the Big Apple. The whole groupattended a taping of The Today Show andmet many of the hosts including Al Roker,Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. They went to the
Statue of Liberty, visited the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center and sawa performance of Wicked on Broadway.
But the highlight of the trip was denitely when they attended a VIP tapingof The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, met The Daily Show staff and posed for
photos with Jon Stewart himself! Becky was thenable to meet her benefactor, Rory Albanese, whoimmediately gave her a big hug. When he asked
if Becky felt like she was living her dream, sheenthusiastically responded, Yes!The experience clearly meant a lot to the
staff at The Daily Show as well. Rory Albanesesent this parting message to Hammer Travel:You guys are incredible. Meeting all of you wasone of the most inspiring experiences of my life.Stay in touch please!
