Gone with theWind
Last June, the coolest place in Georgia was the CongressCenter in Atlanta (GWCC), despite the 40 degree tem-peratures outside the building. The exhibition centre was at the
time hosting a convention organised by the international Wind
Energy Association. Many of the exhibitors had wind turbines
and fans to simulate winds, and this helped cool the environ-
ment. However one of the worlds leading manufacturers of wind
turbines, Danish company Vestas, chose to focus on large box of
Lego, with the bricks used to construct a wind power system. The
partnership between Lego and Vestas was not just a one-off for thetrade show, but rather dates back several years.
Indeed for two years, starting in 2007, Vestas and Lego set up an
itinerant show called Wind is Free at various airports in the United
States, Canada, Europe and Asia, to entertain travellers. At the Los
Angeles airport, for example, the display included Lego brick mod-

Via col Vento

display also featured a series of lms
on wind energy. The common thread
of the shows was the possibility for the
public to interact with the material on

electricity.
When this partnership with Vestas
concluded, Lego continued its workwith wind energy through a partner-

ergy utility. At Legoland Billund, in

tion of the actual turbines, and there-
fore next autumn the area will be com-

includes hands-on activities to let visi-
tors discover different energy sources
(gas, geothermal, electricity etc.) and
the path that energy travels before get-
ting to our home light switches, plus an

knowledge on the Anholt offshore wind
farm, including themed postcards.
This is not the rst time that windhas been the inspiration for an amuse-
ment park. One of the pioneers in this
sense was Carowinds, opened in 1973
in North Carolina, between the cities
of Charlotte and Fort Mill. The name
itself is in fact a cross between Caro-
linas (North Carolina and South Caro-
lina, in the south-eastern USA) and
wind. The name indicated the parks
mission, involving proposing the re-
gions traditions and culture, with windrepresenting the air streams that tradi-
tionally blow between the two states. A
series of changes in ownership, ending
in 2006 with the acquisition by the cur-
rent owners, Cedar Fair, has seen the
name retained, while the park has be-
come a destination with popular attrac-
tions inspired by lms and characters
such as Snoopy.
As well as keeping the original
name, Cedar Fair also uses wind as an

attraction. Many of its parks in fact,
including Carowinds, have a Wind-
Seeker, the popular ride created by
Mondial.
One park however that is focus-
ing on wind as a resource to improve
prots not through new attractions, but
rather by reducing costs, is Tivoli Co-
penhagen. As G&PIhas already under-
lined in the past, this park is not new to
green records (in 1999 it was the rst
park in the world to receive environ-
mental certication), since 2010 has
established a program for lowering its
energy consumption efcient light-
ing, electric vehicles and solar sys-
tems to recharge them, recycling lake
water etc. and since the same year
has been completely powered by wind
energy. Tivoli has its own turbine in
the Avedre Holme wind farm, again
installed by Dong Energy. Obviously,
the energy consumed by Tivoli does
not necessarily come from that spe-
cic turbine, as the energy produced
is not classied based on the source.
Nonetheless, regardless of the source,
Tivoli receives its annual demand of 10

million kilowatt-hours of electricity at
practically zero cost. In this way, not
only is the Danish park at the cutting
edge, but also helps stimulate the thou-
sands of families who visit the park
to take similar steps to reduce energy
consumption.Science centers and toy manufac-
turers already have displays and prod-
ucts that explain and allow people to
experiment and become more familiar
with wind energy. The main attrac-
tions, however, have different origins.
The state of Texas, for example, until
a century ago had a landscape stud-
ded by windmills that pumped water
for livestock and crops. Thousands of
these installations still exist in more re-mote areas, however recently some of
these, above all in the western part of
the state where it is windier, these have
been joined by modern wind power tur-
bines. Today, Texas has switched from
being one of the main oil producers to
being the biggest wind energy supplier
in the US. This evolution is illustrated
at the American Wind Power Center in
Lubbock, which calls itself the worlds
biggest wind energy museum. It covers
110,000 square metres, partly indoors
and partly outdoors, and hosts dozens
of old American style windmills, ac-
companied by a modern 50m high
turbine that supplies all the museumselectricity and was manufactured, need
we say, by Vestas.
One much more creative solution
can be found at the Maryhill Art Mu-
seum, a small private modern art mu-
seum in Goldendale, Washington state.
To cover part of the annual running
costs of around 1.3 million dollars, the
owners of the land where the museum
is located have leased an area to install
15 wind turbines, capable of supply-ing around 500MW of electricity to the
city of Los Angeles. The contract is for
20 years, with the possibility to extend
it a further 20. A wind of relief for the
museum, given that this lease brings in
250,000 dollars a year: around a fth
of the costs of running the museum,
which for the next 40 years at least will
have a minimum guaranteed income.n
