  • In 1747 the aging Johann Sebastian Bach visited the cosmopolitan court of

the young and highly musical King Frederick the Great of Prussia. This was

the catalyst for the composition of his great late work Musical Offering

dedicated to the king. This programme explores the contrasting styles of

Frederick’s court composers including Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emmanuel

and the king himself. It culminates with Bach’s monumental Trio Sonata

from Musical Offering. The magnificent eighteenth century Gothic interior of

Strawberry Hill House (built around the same time) provides an

    atmospheric backdrop.

    Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) Frederick II (‘the Great’) (1712 - 1786)

  • 2015 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of the ‘Sun King’, Louis XIV

    (r.1643 – 1715) and the accession of his grandson Louis XV (r.1715 – 1774).

These two long-lived-monarchs were contrasting characters and their

respective reigns forged very different paths for France. The former

stabilized the country after a long period of religious strife and saw a golden

age of French culture; the latter overseeing the rise of the decorative rococo

style, but also a gradual decline in the prestige of the monarchy, which

ultimately led to the French Revolution. This concert explores the music from

the reigns of both monarchs, with music by Dieupart, Elisabeth Jacquet de la

Guerre (whose 350th anniversary we celebrate this year), Leclair, Mondonville

    and Corrette.

Jean-Marie Leclair Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre

Duo Follia specializes in the rich repertoire of 17th and

18th century music for violin and basso continuo and, in

particular, the pioneering repertoire for violin and

    obbligato harpsichord. Concert presentations include

informative and entertaining introductions drawing on

the diverse artistic, cultural and historic links with the

    music.

The ensemble particularly enjoys performing in historic

venues. Recent concerts have included music by J S Bach

and his sons, music for the House of Hanover and

entertainments for the Ancien Régime at the Handel

House Museum, the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court

Palace and Garrick’s Temple to Shakespeare.

  • FOLLIA presents a varied programme of chamber music composed in the

two leading European capitals of the 18th century. Composers include natives

of each city, as well as some of the many foreign visitors and emigrés enticed

by the wealth and cosmopolitan atmospheres of Paris and London. These

include Telemann (a German visiting Paris), Geminiani (an Italian resident in

London) and Handel (a German who was the greatest composer in London).
