I nternationally acclaimed singerAmeya Dabli launched his music album Ekam Satt - One Truth, One

Humanity, World Music at the hands ofglobal humanitarian and spiritualleader Rev. Dada J P Vaswani as part ofthe latter’s centenary birthday celebra-tions in Pune. The album is available onall digital platforms through Times Music. Inspired by respected Dada’smessage of selfless love and service forhumanity, the album features the worksof legendary poets and saints such asKabirdas, Mirabai, Narsinh Mehta,Guru Nanak Dev, Khwaja Garib Nawaz,Buddha, Tukaram, Tulsidas, Gospelsand others.

Given the continuous stress and tur-moil that individuals across the globeface, there is an urgent need for each ofus to pause, reflect and connect witheach other, cutting across our religious,social and cultural beliefs. The album’ssongs focus on thisprecise theme thateventually it is a ‘oneworld family’ andshowcases the best ofsufi, folk and contem-porary world musicacross different gen-res. groups. With an aim to spread the mes-sage of love and unity across culturesand society globally, Ameya Dabli andhis business partner Purvi Soali quittheir successful corporate careers to become social entrepreneurs.

A versatile singer, Ameya has per-formed over 1,500 concerts across 15countries. The music from the album isalready a rage with live renditions byAmeya across 25 locations including forlarge corporates like Aditya BirlaGroup and at the Indian High Commis-sion in London. He is currently touringIndia, US and Dubai for his other musical concept ‘Heart 2 Heart’ cover-ing melodious ghazals and folk music.

His 10 city ‘Heart 2 Heart’ tour covering melodious ghazals kicked offin Mumbai yesterday and will furthermove to Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad,Kolkata and other cities.

Who is to blame for regressive content on Indian TV? The makers, actors or audience?Small screen actors speak out about television showing regressive content in a bid to rake in the moolah

SHOWS ARE REGRESSIVE TODAY, WE ARE DOING ANYTHING TOACHIEVE RATINGS: NIA SHARMA“It is important to credit the small screen for what we actors have achieved in life, but thefact remains that shows are turning outright regressive. In order to win the ratings game,the makers are making shows on concepts which are completely unheard of. People mightargue that they are catering to smaller towns and villages in India, but if you keep showingsuch regressive content, how will they learn and educate themselves? This has affected thepopularity of TV; people are moving to foreign channels and shows for entertainment. I alsofeel that we can’t sell stupidity, we need to be part of shows that we can be proud of.”

NOBODY IS ADDRESSING THEREASON FOR SUCH CONTENTON TV SHOWS: RIDHI DOGRA“The content on television is mediocre.We are forgetting that we also have a social responsibility to put sensible content out there, which makes peoplethink. If someone is willing to take arisk, people should stand by them.Content on TV is regressive for manyreasons and that should be addressed.Drama is incorporated in every show aswe are told that audiences like that.There are so many things in the showsthat we don’t agree with, but we have todo it. Audiences need to reject such regressive content.

WE ARE STRUGGLING WITH FALLING TRPS ACROSS TELEVISION: NAKUUL MEHTAI'd hate to generalise everything on Indiantelevision as good or bad. I'd like to thinkthat we are going through a phase oftransition, where the attempt is to movetowards finite content, get more grip on thequality of a product, whilst we are alsostruggling with falling TRPs on the wholefor television consumption. In anenvironment like this, there are producersand channels trying different things tostand out and find an audience. I'm gladKaran Wahi came out and called the bluff. Ittakes courage for an actor to express hisopinion. It is also heartening to see that wehave a generation of actors who are willingto give the industry the respect it deserves,but not be subservient to it just because itgives us our bread and butter.

IT IS SADDENING FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE TO SEE HOW TRP-DRIVENDRIVEN OUR INDUSTRY IS: VIKKAS MANAKTALAIt’s true that most content on TV is regressive,but there are still some makers who are doingtheir best in creating intelligent content,which adds up to making a nationprogressive. It is saddening for creative peopleto see how TRP-driven our industry is, thisoften leads to a compromise in content.

THE CONTENT IS REFLECTING THE MINDSET OF THE COUNTRY: ANKITA BHARGAVAThe content ranges from good to pathetic on variouschannels today. Maybe the channels are catering tothe kind of response they get from various regions ofthis country? Or may be the content reflects theexisting mindset of this country, I can’t say!

I don’twatch a single TV show. Itchallenges my sensibilitiesas well, but I work in thosesame shows because that iswhat I am offered as anactor. And that is whatbrings in the TRPs.

‘VOTE AND REMOTE’ ARE THE TWO POWERSTHAT PEOPLE HAVE: GAURAV CHOPRAAMost of the shows on TVare regressive today. Fewprojects are conceived witha progressive thought.Being an actor, I would liketo say that the power lieswith the people. ‘Vote andremote’ are the two powersthat they have; they shoulduse it and stop endorsingsuch shows. Strangely, evenwhen the show is dubbedregressive, people are stillwatching it.

WHAT ARE WETRYING TO SELL TOTHE YOUTH WITHTHE CONCEPTS OFOUR TV SHOWS?: SSHARADMALHOTRAA

Television is a great toolfor motivation, but thethemes of our showstoday have womenfighting with otherwomen, children fallingin love with adults... Whatare we trying to sell to theyouth and generation?

“In that sense, the project is a public collaborative effort,” adds Sujatro, who hasphotographed over 40 women till now,including two girls from Moscow and Boston.

Interestingly, while shooting in publicspaces, nobody questioned or stopped Suja-tro from shooting. “Many didn’t even under-stand what we were doing, while others justwalked past, save for a few who were reallyconcerned about the issue at large. It is real-ly a reflection about how deep-rooted the ap-athy is,” he says. But understandably so, Su-jatro has received flak for his work. “Amongall the backlash I’ve got, I’ve also been toldthat I should be lynched. But that’s hardly aconcern. The project isn’t divided by barri-ers of religion, caste or creed, and I believe itis being talked about across the world be-cause people identify the subject as a globalissue,” says Sujatro.

The series has gone viral, but Sujatrowants to now take the project across Indiaand is currently crowdfunding for the same.He says. “I want to travel with the seriesalong the Western coast, down to Kerala, andthe North-East as well. My aim is to completethe project by the end of August.” Till date,he has collected about 44 per cent of the totaltarget amount.

While signing off, Sujatro says, “It’s important for people to know that I startedthis project when I had no access to the me-dia. It’s a social media project and all pic-tures have been taken on a mobile phone.This is something all of us are capable of do-ing today. We all have access to decentphones, so it’s really up to us to start a dia-logue for change.”

Women take inspiration from the projectInterestingly, some women have taken cue from the series to assert their own identities or implement thesubject into their own practices. Akanksha Shah, 17, though based in Moscow, participated in the projectwhen she visited Mumbai. “I aspire to be a ballet dancer, and posing like one for the project, with a cowmask, was my way of defining myself. I truly feel women are somewhat limited as compared to men,wherever they might be,” says Akanksha, one of the youngest women to participate in the project.

On the other hand, 25-year-old dance/movement therapy student Deepa Sai Avula has been inspired tocollaborate with Sujatro on a couple of dance videos. “I recently started my own Instagram handle,@danceformentalhealth. When I came across Sujatro’s work, I thought that collaborating with him wouldsomewhere help contribute to the silent protest. I plan to use semi-classical Indian dance movements,”says Deepa, who is studying mental health counselling in Boston.

EVERY WOMAN IN THE COUNTRY CAN RELATETO THE STATEMENT THE SERIES MAKES. IT’SSAD THAT THOUSANDS OF WOMEN WHOSUFFER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, HONOURKILLING, RAPE AND HARASSMENT DON’T HAVEA VOICE, WHILE KILLING A COW ATTRACTS ALOT OF ATTENTION. COWS ARE INDEED LUCKY.
