PERSIAN WAR(499-449 B.C.) -The greatest challenge to the Greek world came during the war against the Persian empire. -Persian Wars: Athens & Sparta vs. Persian Empire Battles: -Marathon -Salamis
PERSIAN WAR(499-449 B.C.) -Battle of Marathon:
-Persia under Emperor Darius, sends 600 ships & thousands of soldiers near Athens -outnumbered, the Athenians defeat the Persians at Marathon using superior tactics
PERSIAN WAR(499-449 B.C.) -The Greeks send a runner, Pheidippides, from the battlefield, back to Athens to announce their victory
PERSIAN WAR(499-449 B.C.) -Battle of Salamis
-Persians fought back and won the battle of Thermopylae but lost more men than the Greeks -after burning Athens to the ground, the Greek Navy appeared and defeated Persia at Salamis

-Greeks controlled the Aegean Sea -Athens preserved its independence -continued innovations in government & culture
