not been tested, use water
from a source that you know
is safe.

Testing is the only way to be sure it is safe. If you have a well at your home or cottage, testing is
your responsibility.
When should I test?• Test bacterial quality every 6 months
• Test chemical quality every 2 years
• Test more often if you notice changes in taste,
smell, or colour
Did you know? Exposure to high levels of
arsenic in drinking water can
cause nausea, diarrhea, and
muscle pain. Over the long
term, exposure to low levels of
arsenic can cause certain types
of cancer.
Did you know? Many harmful
bacteria and
chemicals have
no taste, smell, or
colour.
Warning signs — Your well water may be unsafe if
• the water contains naturally occurring
chemicals such as arsenic or uranium
• the water is discoloured
• the water has an unpleasant smell or taste
• nearby soil is contaminated by chemicals,
such as pesticides, industrial waste, human or
animal sewage, or seawater
The only way to know your well water is safe is by testing it regularly.
