What’s special about reptiles?

Pets are an important part of the American household.Your pet-owning experience will be most enjoyable if youcarefully consider which pet best suits your family, homeand lifestyle. Unfulfilled expectations are a leading causeof pet relinquishment, so make an informed decision. Taketime, involve your family, and give careful considerationto the following questions.

Reptiles include some of the most ancient species onEarth. They are colorful and interesting. They live inmany different environments and have developedfascinating adaptations to survive in water and on landand by changing skin color. Some reptiles (e.g., manytypes of snakes) only eat once a week, making it easierto care for them when you are away. In general, reptilesrequire less daily care and exercise than other pets suchas cats and dogs.

What choices do you have?

What are the special needs of reptiles? Reptile needs vary with the species. In general, reptilescannot control their own body temperature, and mustbe housed in an environment with a specific range oftemperatures that are known to be best for that species.Humidity ranges are just as important as temperature, and can be more difficult for many people to duplicate(especially during winter in cold climates). Proper typeand amount of lighting is important for a reptile’s well-being, as is proper housing, since many reptilesoutgrow their initial tanks as they mature.

Since each reptile species is unique, thoroughly researchthe animal you want as a pet before you purchase one.Learn what is known about the reptile’s natural habitat

(e.g., diet, environmental conditions) as well as howexperienced reptile owners have cared for that species.Someone who has successfully bred the reptile incaptivity can often provide good advice as willveterinarians whose special interest is reptiles.

It is important to provide the correct environment foryour pet. Some reptiles are climbers and require verticalcaging and branches, whereas others prefer to live onflat surfaces with hiding spaces. Some like to burrow, while others spend most of their lives in water. Somereptiles also need to hibernate. Most reptiles shed theirskin as they grow, and usually cannot be handled ordisturbed during this process.

Make sure you are able to feed the reptile you selectan appropriate diet; for example, you should not get acarnivorous snake if you know you will not becomfortable feeding it meat such as mice or rats. Whilereptiles are often considered predators, there are speciesof animals that prey on reptiles and many people failto consider this source of stress for their pet reptile. Forexample, because some snakes eat other snakes it isn’tgood to house these two types in the same room. Evendogs, cats, birds and other family pets may cause stressfor your pet reptile.

There are many options forchoosing a reptile as a pet, includingvarieties of lizards, snakes, and turtles. Some species live mostly in thewater, others mostly on land andmany live in both. Depending onthe species, reptiles can be herbivores

(plant-eating), insectivores (insect-eating), or carnivores(meat-eating). Many have more than one type of dietand may even change from one diet to another indifferent phases of their life.

Who will care for your reptile?

Does a reptile fit your lifestyle? Reptiles can be excellent alternatives for people whoare allergic to furred or feathered animals. Many reptilesappear to enjoy human handling and interaction whilesome, even of the same species, prefer to be left aloneand observed, although they will often form a strongbond with the person who takes care of them. Researchthe animal you select to learn about its general care, lifespan, and how large it may grow. For example, manyiguanas grow to be three to four feet long and may bemore difficult to handle when larger and sexually mature. As they grow, many reptiles’ needs for caging and carechange and these changes will impact how suitable thatanimal is for your lifestyle.

Most reptiles depend on the sun to keep them warmand to help regulate their metabolic functions, such astheir immune system and calcium levels. They often domuch better in warmer climates where they can liveoutdoors most of their lives. It may be difficult toduplicate the reptile’s ideal living conditions inside yourhome.

Many reptiles will bite and some are venomous. Somereptiles, although attractive and unique, are inappropriatepets because they are dangerous. Permits may be requiredto keep certain reptiles and some species are prohibitedas pets in various states and municipalities and undersome housing rules.

Can you afford a reptile? Prices of reptiles vary greatly with species, rarity, age, size, and coloration. Often supplies for their housingare more expensive than the reptile itself as many speciesrequire larger enclosures as they mature and grow. Somewill require lighting fixtures with special bulbs thatneed to be replaced every 6 to12 months. In addition, while many reptiles need fresh vegetables daily, othersmust be fed live insects (such as worms or crickets) andcarnivores require the regular purchase of feeder mice, rats, chicks, or rabbits for their food. Since reptiles, likeother pets, may become ill and require surgery or otherveterinary care during their lifetime, routine veterinaryvisits are important.

While families should involvetheir children in caring for theirpet reptile, children need thehelp of an adult who is willing, able, and available to supervisea reptile’s daily care. If you travel, your reptile will generally dobetter if left home in its ownenvironment and cared for byfriends or a service. However, keep in mind that some peopleare afraid of reptiles or don’t likefeeding them, so finding a

petsitter may be a challenge.

There is also a human health risk to consider whenhousing a reptile. Since many reptiles can carry theSalmonella bacteria that can cause illness in people, good hygiene must be followed when handling reptiles.Children may be at higher risk of infection unless they

are adequately supervised and taught to follow goodcleanliness practices around their pet.

Most people obtainreptiles at pet stores, reptile shows, or,occasionally, fromshelters or rescuegroups. Most commonpet reptiles are bred incaptivity, but some are

illegally taken from their environment and sold as pets. You should inquire about this at your pet store or thereptile show, so you don’t encourage illegal trade.

Reptiles bred and raised in captivity as future petsare likely to be healthier and live longer than thosecaptured in the wild, and their purchase supportsresponsible reptile breeding and management.

Unless you plan to breed your reptile, it is generallybest to keep onlyone species as a pet. They often becomet e r r i t o r i a l o raggressive whensexually mature, and may even bestressed to see otheranimals. Becomefamiliar with thenormal weight, coloration, and activities of the species you want priorto purchase. Carefully look over the animal you areconsidering buying. You should not see any externalparasites, such as mites or ticks, and the reptile’s eyesshould be clear. Ask about its diet and if the reptilehas been eating (if not, there may be a health problem). The skin sheen and color varies greatly by species, age,and time until shed.

may be necessary to ensure the health and welfare ofyour new pet. Schedule an initial wellness exam soyour veterinarian can evaluate the general health ofyour new pet reptile and check for external parasites(as well as internal parasites through a fecal sample).Since new animals should be quarantined for at leasta month and kept away from other reptiles in thehousehold, your veterinarian can determine when it issafe to introduce the new reptile.

If you find your reptile is no longer an appropriate petfor your family, contact your veterinarian, reptilespecialist, or local animal control office for help infinding it a new home. Never release the reptile intothe outdoors where it will not survive and could presenta health risk to people or other animals.
