What Is the Church?
Greetings my Beloved Community!
I am thankful to you for so many
opportunities to share, grow and deepen our
faith in Christ Jesus!
I am excited about our current Wednesday
evening study on Dietrich Bonhoeffer and invite all who are available to join us for
dinner, fellowship, study and discussion. Perhaps you have noticed “What IS the
Church?” flyers in various locations throughout the building. Perhaps you have
wondered to yourself “What is Pastor La’Vetta up to now?”
My hope is that these visual prompts will inspire and nudge us to begin thinking about
who we are as the church. It is my hope that as we explore and more clearly discern
who God is calling us to be that we cultivate a healthy dose of curiosity, supported by
brazen courage to live into the call and journey to becoming CHURCH AT IT’S BEST!
I invite you to prayerfully consider with me “What IS the Church?” Let me know how
the Lord is speaking to you. As you begin to hear from God, take a moment if you will
to write your responses on the flyers throughout the building. If that’s not convenient,
make a list and give it to me or slide it under the door of the pastor’s study. I
am anxious to hear how God is speaking to Crossroads Christian Church.
With a newfound sense of purpose and direction we can begin to dream, envision and
imagine how we can live into that glorious calling in Christian fellowship!
I am thankful for the opportunity to dream, grow and soar with you!
Blessings,
Pastor La’Vetta
“The church exists primarily for two closely correlated purposes: to worship God and to work for his
kingdom in the world ... The church also exists for a third purpose, which serves the other two: to
encourage one another, to build one another up in faith, to pray with and for one another, to learn from
one another and teach one another, and to set one another examples to follow, challenges to take up,
and urgent tasks to perform. This is all part of what is known loosely as fellowship.”

T h a n k s g i v i n g O f f e r i n g 2 0 1 7 From the very beginnings of the movement, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning,
encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still
committed to higher education. Currently, over 50,000 students attend our fourteen Disciples related
colleges and universities or seven seminaries and divinity houses. And in the past twelve months, over
12,000 students have graduated from these fine schools.
On November 12 and 19, Disciples churches across the US and Canada will collect the Thanksgiving
offering. Your gift to the Thanksgiving offering helps to support the work of our institutions of higher
learning in many ways: financially supporting Disciples related schools, providing undergraduate scholarships
and support for spiritual life offices, and providing scholarships and support for those pursuing theological
education.
This November, please give generously to this year’s Thanksgiving offering. Your gifts make a world of
difference as Disciples continue our legacy of supporting education and our institutions of higher learning.
