8.LongtermgoalsiffundingismatchedwithSTACaswelliffundsarenotmatched.

Thelong-termgoalistogrowOCIPandthe1Y+FellowshipProgram.Progresshasbeenmadeinsecuringstablefunding.Aone-yearcommitmentof$225KtoOCIPfromtheCourseDeliveryFeeshasbeensecured.TheCollegeDeanssupporteditandtheUniversityBudgetCommittee(UBC)approvedit.SinceSTACcontinuestoco-fundtheprogram,requestsforsupportwillbesubmittedeachyearsinceamulti-yearOCIPfundingcommitmentcannotbesupportedbySTAC.ArequestforcontinuedprofessionaldevelopmentfundingwillbemadetoDeansandtheUBCforFY15.Ensuringqualityforallcoursesregardlessofmethodofdeliveryistheprimarymissionofthe

AppendixBFacultyComments-ReductioninMaterialsandTextbookCostsIledtheconversationonimplementinganewtextbookforourTechWritingclass(ENGL218).Whatwedidwasgettogetherinasmallcohorttodeterminewhichtextwaspreferableandthenchoosetoeliminateabouthalfofthechaptersthatareeithernotusedorwhosematerialcanbefoundeasily(andfreely)elsewhere.Asaresult,wecreatedacustomtextw/abundledetextthatcostabout$40lessthantheoriginal.IcreatedmyworkbookswithKendall/HuntPublishingCo.inanefforttoreducestudentcosts.SomethingthathasprovenevenmoresuccessfulwiththechangeswemadeduringtheOCIPprocessisthatwenowofferRhapsodyaccessforthelisteningcomponentoftheclass.Itdoesnotreducethecostagreatdeal,butitoffersmuchmorevaluetothestudent,astheynowhaveaccesstoeverythingontheextensiveRhapsodywebsiteratherthanbeingtiedtothe70-100trackswehadavailableontheoldlisteningCDsetswecreated.Istillusemytextbookbutamnowprovidingallmyresourcesonline.Studentsnolongerhavetopurchaseextracomponentsoutsideofthetext.ThetextbooksthatIuseforAst110,Ast308andHon308arenowentirelyon-line.Theyarefree.ThisdecreasedthetextbookcostforAst110,Ast308,andHon308from$100percourseto$0.Totalenrollmentinthesecoursesisapproximately120students.Thestudenttextbooksavingis,therefore,$12,000percoursesetoffering.Iofferedtheoptionofusingonlinetextsandprovidedlinkstothreealternatesourcesforbooks.Ialsoreducedthecoursebookrequirementtoonlyoneandprovidedsupplementarymaterialsfreeofcharge.ThemainwayIreducecostwiththeonlinestatisticsclassisthatsinceIamabletouseCanvasforsomanylearningassignments,thereisnoneedforthestudentstopurchaseastudyguide-itisonlineandtheyareabletopurchasetheoldereditionofthetextbookandthatsavesthemcloseto$100each.Sowith25studentsineachonlinestatisticsclassthatcomesto$5,000ayeartotal.ButtheydohavetostillpurchasethetextbookandthestudentversionofSPSS.IhavereducedtextbookcostsformystudentsassuggestedbytheOCIPgroupbyallowingstudentstousepreviouseditionsandprovidingsupplementalmaterialfromthewebthatallowsstudentstoindividuallyresearchthetopicsthatwereaddedtothetextintheneweredition.Ialsohaveaddedvideostoreplaceadditionaltextsformyclasses.Iamsupplementingmyonlineandfacetofaceclasseswithonlineresourcesthatarefree.Thisissteadilyreducingrelianceonhardcopytextbooks.Itisnoteasytoteachanatomyandphysiologywithoutatextbooksincestudentshavecometorelyontextsquiteheavily.However,myclassroommethodisshiftingsteadilytowardsproblem-basedlearning,andIamconfidentthatinanotheryearortwoIcancompletelyeliminatetextbooksandrelyonfreeresources.

AppendixCSamplesofStudentFeedbackLearningnewformatsandtheirabilities.Thatiswasonlinesoclassroomtalkdidnothindertheteacherperformanceandthoughtsofprogress.Itwaseasilyaccessible.Ireallyenjoyedthediscussionsbecauseitallowedmetounderstandthemoviefromotherpeople'sviewsanditpointedoutstuffImayhavemissed.Also,Ienjoyedthechoosingofmoviestoview.Theonlinecoursewaswithoutdifficultiesorissues.Wasabletomaneuverthroughitwithnoproblems.Itwaseasytofindtheassignmentsandwhatwasrequiredeachweek.IlikedthattherewasadiscussionalmosteveryweekandtheexpectationwasalwaysdiscussiondueonMondayandtheresponsesdueonWednesday.Ireallyenjoyedtheaspectofsubmittingeveryassignmentasadiscussion.Theadditionalacademicreadings.Thecontent,movies,andpapers.IlikedthatwegottopracticecommunicatingprofessionallywithourpeersandIgottopreparefortheworkenvironment.IdidenjoyedthestructuretheclasshadTheinstructor'sfeedbackandthereadings.Regularcourseworkdeadlinesandexpectations.Instructorknowledgeandenthusiasm.Myprofessorgaveverycomprehensivefeedbackthatincludedfollow-upquestions.Thiscontributedgreatlytomycomprehensionofthecoursematerial.Thateverythingwasonline:)IlikethewaytheinstructortaughtandcommunicatedCollaboratingwithotherstudentsandgettingthroughassignmentsasagroup.Howeverythingwasonline.Therewerelotsofinteractionsbetweenclassmates.Thiswasduetotheprofessorcreatingopportunitiesforthistypeofparticipation.

toengagemystudentsinthediscussions,learnedhowtoorganizelearningmodulestofitstudents,uselearningobjectivestomeasurelearning,etc.TheOCIPteamwasveryhelpfulandansweredallquestionsquickly.Iappreciatethat.

• Ifoundtheprogramtobeacriticalpartofmydevelopmentasanonlineinstructor.ThisprogramshouldberequiredforanyonewantingtoteachanonlinecourseatNMSU.

• TheOCIPprogramexposedmetothestate-of-the-artrequirementsfortheonlineteaching&learning.MyparticipationinOCIPhelpedmecriticallyre-thinkmyapproachestodeliveringhybridoronlinecourses.Itwasextremelyinformativeandapplied.IhavemadesomeimportantchangesduringthecourseoftheprogramandIcontinuetheworkonimprovingmycourses.Ihopetoseeasignificantpayoffintermsofincreaseinmystudentslearning.

• Theprogramgavemenewinsightinhowstudentslearnandhowtomaketheirlearningexperiencelessstressfulandmoreorganized.Ijustwishthiscouldbeanon-goingeffortforeachofusteachingattheuniversity.Everypersonwhoteachesonlinecanbenefitfromthisprogram!

• TheOCIPFellowshiphastaughtmethevalueoforganizationofanonlinecoursebyforcingmetovisualizeanewcoursefromastudent'sperspective.IwasforcedtoreexaminethewayIstructureonlineclasses,notwithrespecttotechnology,butratherwithaccesstoandorganizationofcontentandthevariouswaystofosterstudentinteractionandengagement.

• Igotamuchstrongersenseofstudents'needsfromanonlinecourse.IfoundtheOCIPstaffabsolutelyavailable,knowledgeable,andhelpful.Ialsolearnedhowtostreamlinesomeofthebusywork,espgrading.

• Ithinkmyclassissomuchbetterorganized;it’seasiertonavigateforthestudents.Theyknowwhattodofromtheverybeginning.Ifeelasif,becauseofthisprogram,Iwillbeabetteronlineteacher.

• Andhavingprofessionalshelpusoutcertainhelpsmefeelmore…itencouragesmetotrythingsthatsoundlikemaybeitwillwork,maybeitwon’tbutyoucanturntosomebodyifitdoesn’twork.

• Actuallytheroleofreviewisveryimportant.Becauseweallcomefromeducationalgrounds,andalotoftheinformationwewereprovidedwasforaparticularcontextthatsomeofuswerenotfamiliarwith.So,havingsomeonecomeinandsay,well,thisiswhatitactuallymeans,makesitaloteasiertoincorporate.Wearegettingthatfeedbacktohelpusrelatetothematerial.

• Ifeellikeithashelpedmebecomeabetterorganizer,it’shelpedmetomatchwhatIamdoinginmyclassroomwithproventechniqueswiththerubric,andthat’sreallyamatterof

contrastingandcomparingateverylevel.Andthat’sthatreflective,youknow,hereitis,hereisthestandard,amIactuallyimplementingthatinmyclassroom.AndIthinkithashelpedmethinkthroughwhatthatactuallymeans.

• Thewebinarsareverygood,thefirstSoftChalkIdidwasawebinarandthenIcreatedanassignmentpagethathasallsortsoflittlelinkstothehelpsIwantedtogivethem,sothewebinarsareverygood.

• EverythingaboutmyteachinghaschangedbecauseofwhatIhavelearnedinhere.• Ithinkthatthealigningoflearningobjectivesandcreatingoflearningobjectivesatamodule

levelisimportant.• I’veuseditinmyfacetofaceclass.Infact,onaslightlydifferentsubject,I’vemadeallmy

facetofaceclasseshybridnow• OCIPgavemethathandleonhowtoactuallyusethatblending.Soithelped,likeIsaidin

facetofaceclasses,thatIamusingthesametechniqueandthesameprincipalsbutnowthatIhavethoseinfrontofme,Iamusingthisinmyfacetofaceclass,theblendingofitthetwo.

• Ithinkinmycasemystudentsactuallyfindmycoursesmoreorganized• I’mworkingharderoncommunicationwithmystudents;I’mclearlythinkingmoreabout
