Hello Dovelanders!
The slides with a peachy
background require you
to do a task!
REMEMBER TO READ ALL
THE INFORMATION
CAREFULLY BEFORE
TRYING A TASK.
Most of the answers will be on the next page so
you need to use your self-control… I trust you
Remember you can send any of the work you do to your teacher using your
class email address.
This week in reading, we are going to look at Graphic Organisers. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what they are as all will become clear!
We will also be looking at some song lyrics and answering questions about them.
But first, quickly remind yourself of all the things a good reader does.
MONDAY
Here are some examples of blank graphic organisers…
They look like ways in which you might plan your longer pieces of writing in English or Topic lessons. Well they basically are!
Graphic organisers can help
you to present a summary of
texts in a visual form and are
also a great way of showing
what you’ve actually
understood from a text!
Think about a graphic organiser like this…
They’re almost like the reverse of how we
plan our writing. When writing, we would
use a graphic organiser to plan our ideas
before we write, whereas this week, we
are going to read texts and work out
what the plan would've looked like
before the text was written.
Power for homes
gascoal
burns Carbon dioxide released
blanket
forms
prevents heat from escaping
Warmer planet
Extreme weather
Resulting in
Ice caps melting
Polar bears homeless
rise in sea-levels
Islands disappearing
Look at this completed graphic organiser that would’ve started like this This style of graphic organiser would be used for ‘cause and effect’ texts that contain words/phrases such
as: As a result, therefore, consequently. These words/phrases are what the arrows represent.
As you can see, you can
adapt the graphic
organisers if you need to!
They can also include
sketches as well as words!
And this is the text that the graphic organiser on the previous page was created from (yr 6 this should look familiar to you!)
The Earth’s Weather
We need power for homes, transport and to build things. Some of this
power is still made from coal and gas, (fossil fuels), and when these
are burned they release carbon dioxide into the air. This builds up in
a kind of blanket beyond the clouds and therefore it prevents heat
from escaping into space. Consequently our planet is becoming
warmer. This also makes the earth’s weather more extreme and
unpredictable and leads to ice melting at the Poles, so that arctic
animals like polar bears have fewer places to live. It also results in a
rise in sea level so some islands are disappearing altogether..
Look at the image at the side to see what other styles of graphic organisers there are and what vocabulary you would expect to see in the texts they’re used for.
Let’s look at another example
Let’s look at the ‘Sequence’ graphic organiser.
What text type might this graphic organiser be suitable for? Look at the language you
would find in these types of texts.. first, next, last etc.
INSTRUCTIONS!
The sequence graphic organiser is an ideal way to represent the information given in a set of
instructions. This is because you follow a sequence when you follow instructions. The reader has to do
things in the right order. You will also find language such as, first, last, and
next, in a set of instructions.
Let’s look at these instructions on how to make a photo frame…
Now think about what the planning for this text
could’ve looked like using the sequencing graphic
organiser
It could have images and/or words in it.
(Don’t worry about the You will need section for now)
Here is a completed sequence graphic organiser for the photo frame instructions. It’s not very detailed but it shows that the reader has clearly
understood what they have read and that’s the important part!
Task
Put the information from these
instructions into a sequence graphic
organiser. Remember, you can use images and/or words.
Answer
Your graphic organiser could look like this but there are
lots of ways to represent the information.
The important thing is that you show that
you have clearly understood the text.
Remember, yours doesn’t have to look like
this
TUESDAY
Today, we are going to look at the ‘description’
graphic organiser.
Can you think about a text-type that would best be represented
by this type of graphic organiser? Look at the language they
contain..
Well let’s have a look…
Task
Read this non-chronological report about
Lee Park Primary School
Now think about how you might represent the
information from this text in a ‘description’
graphic organiser.
It could look like this…
Task
Read this non-chronological
report then draw your own
description graphic organiser to show
you’ve understood the text…
Remember, all graphic organisers
can include images and/or writing.
Answer
Here is the start of agraphic organiser for the Butterfly text, but
there are lots of ways to represent the information.
The important part is that you show that you have clearly
understood the text.
Remember, yours doesn’t have to look like
this
WEDNESDAY
Today, we are going to look at the ‘Cause and Effect’ graphic
organiser.
Can you think about a text-type that would best be represented by this type
of graphic organiser? Look at the language they contain.
Well let’s have a look…
Task
Read this explanation
text
Now think about how you might represent the
information from it in a ‘cause and effect’ graphic
organiser.
It could look like
this…
I have chosen to adapt the graphic organiser slightly and present it in a straight line like a
timeline. Remember, this is fine because the most important thing is that you show you have understood what you have read!
Task
Read this explanation text then draw your
own cause and effectgraphic organiser to
show you’ve understood the text…
Remember, all graphic organisers can include images and/or writing.
And they can look different to this
Answer
I’ve chosen to represent the
information I read like this! Can you see how I’ve used
a bit of the compare and
contrast graphic organiser as well?
But remember, yours doesn’t have
to look like this
THURSDAY
Today and tomorrow, we will be looking at some lyrics to songs with a
‘friends’ theme and answering questions about them.
After all, Songwriters can be described as authors too!

It is written and performed by Randy Newman. It is featured in every Toy Story film. You can watch and listen to it here:

When answering
the questions,
remember to give
reasons to justify
your answers. Use
evidence from the
text whenever
possible!
