Scholastic Book Fair – 23rd-29
th November 2017
Thank you to all our families that supported us during the book fair last week. It was a great success and the total sold
amounted to £854.56. This fantastic figure will mean that the school will be able to spend £570 to spend on new
books for our school library. A big thank you to Mrs Flight for organising and running the book fair. Also thanks to all
the children who acted as helpers.
Pantomime – Friday 1st December 2017
All the children enjoyed this year’s pantomime, Aladdin, on Friday morning. Chaplins theatre group performed the
show. Please see photos below

School Discos
We will host the school discos on Thursday 14th December 2017 in the school hall. Tickets will be on sale in the
playground tomorrow and Wednesday before and after school.
Flu Vaccination Programme – Thursday 7th December AM
Reception to Yr4 children will receive the nasal vaccination on this morning. If any parents have not completed the
consent form, please do so and return to the school office.
Christmas Fete – Friday 8th December after school
We are having a Christmas Fete on Friday 8th December being run by “Friends of Woodford Green”. The fete will
commence after school, at 3.30pm and finish at 5.00pm. In the lead up to the fete we will be having 1 more non
uniform day.
Friday 8th Dec – children can come to school for the day in their own clothes and donate cakes for us to sell. If
you make your own cake please supply a list of ingredients (for allergy reasons). No nuts please! If you cannot
make or buy a cake please send in a monetary donation instead.
Many thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing all of you there!
Parking at United Reformed Church
We regularly ask parents not to park in the car park outside the school as this is Corporation of London land,
designated for Golfers and forest users only.
However, we must now also ask that parents do not park in the church grounds when dropping off children or
collecting in the afternoon. The church grounds are expressly for those attending a function of some description in the
church itself and not for general public use.
Also, there is a shared access road which leads to Village Heights (flats for the elderly) and residents are having problems
accessing their own homes safely due to parents parking in the church. One elderly lady was injured recently because
she was forced to walk on uneven ground to avoid parked cars, causing her to fall.
We need to promote good working relationships with our neighbours at school as we do often use the church facilities
to host events, such as the pantomime last week. We therefore ask that you abide by this request from the church and
refrain from parking in their grounds.

Poetry Competition
Some children from school entered a Poetry competition devised by “Young Writers”. Congratulations to Osman and
Ali in Y5 as they both received a certificate to recognise their good effort.
Information and Reminders:
Last academic year, our average attendance at WGPS was 95.57%. The national expectation for good and better
attendance is set at 96.4% and above.
This means that our attendance must improve, particularly where absences unauthorised and term time holidays are
concerned. We will be working closely with the Local Authority’s Education Welfare Officers this academic year to
ensure that we improve our attendance. We ask that parents/carers work closely with us to achieve this. Please see
information below regarding attendance and absence procedures.

As part of our commitment to improving communication between the school and parents/carers, SLT will be available
each Tuesday afternoon between 3:30pm and 5:00pm for parents to drop in to discuss any queries or questions.
Parents who are unable to attend Tuesday drop-ins can contact the school office to book an appointment to meet with
a member of SLT.
As usual, if parents wish to discuss any issues directly relating to their child(ren) appointments should be made with the
individual class teachers in the first instance.
This year we have Phase Leaders: Ms Jenkins (Nursery and Reception); Ms French (1, 2 and 3) and Ms Robin (4, 5 and
6) who will be following up and contributing towards meetings with teachers and parents.

Attendance Procedures
Our Attendance Policy is in line with current Borough and Government guidelines. To help us improve the schools attendance we now have a BACME* Officer from the Borough who will be visiting weekly to discuss pupils with poor attendance and help us to improve this. Please remember that if your child is absent from school, you must call the school office on the first morning they are off. You must call every day your child is off school and explain fully what is wrong with your child or give any other reason why they are not present. Calling and saying they are ill or unwell is not sufficient – we need to know what is wrong with your child i.e. Chicken pox or a temperature or vomiting etc. This is so we can monitor if there are any infectious illnesses spreading through school that we may need to inform parents about. If we do not hear from you by the time the registers are closing at 9.30am we will start telephoning to find out why. All children have to be accounted for each day at school to ensure there are no child protection issues. If we are unable to contact you we may have no option but to report to the child protection department at Waltham Forest that a child is missing/unaccounted for. Please ensure that if your child is off school due to illness for more than 2 school days – even if you have telephoned us daily – that you write us a letter as confirmation. Please put in your letter what was wrong with your child including any symptoms, whether you visited or spoke to your GP and what they advised. If your GP prescribed your child any medication then please take a picture of the prescription or of the labelled medication and attach to your letter as evidence. (The school is not requiring you to visit your GP or to ask them for a letter. A parental letter is sufficient in most cases). If your child was absent due to another reason and you have documentation to support the reason, please bring it in to copy or attach it to your letter. Appointments for medical/dental treatment should be made for outside school hours, if possible, and evidence of the appointment must be given to the school office.

No time off will be authorised in the weeks immediately before or after any school holidays. We have been advised to tighten up on children who arrive at school late. The children should be lined up in the playground each morning for the bell to ring at 8.55am. Once the Teachers have taken the pupils in the line into school the doors will be closed. Any children then arriving must come in through the main reception door. They will be noted as arriving in order to update the registers. If children arrive after 9am they will be marked as late. If a child arrives after 9.30 when registration time officially ends they will get a “U” mark for the morning which is late after registers closed. If you intend to take your child out of school during term time you must complete an Absence Form prior to taking the time off school. Under some circumstances a certain amount of time may be granted and approved. But the vast majority of time off during term time we will be unable to authorise but we obviously still need to know that your child is absent for Child Protection reasons. Holiday taken during term time will most likely result in a fine from the Borough. It is essential that all parents adhere to this policy. Your continued support is much appreciated in our efforts to improve attendance across the school. *BACME = Behaviour, Attendance & Child Missing in Education Service.
Vomiting and Diarrhoea – if your child is suffering from either of these conditions, or both, then they should not come in to school. They must be clear of Vomiting or Diarrhoea for 48 hours before returning to school.
