GRAPHIC FACILITATION AND VISUAL PRACTICEWendy WardNiagara College, MSVU Grad 2009
what is it?
Storytelling Mind Mapping Visual Thinking Visual Note Taking Graphic Facilitation/Learning
Represent information in a different format and you can unlock a new connection
first activity
Think of a challenge you faced last week. Arrange the symbols and tell your story
relating to the visuals.
why?
Working with incomplete information engages the brain
Doodles relate to what and how your brain is processing
Making the connections = multiple ways of knowing
application
Students in first year college writing strategies course
Biggest challenge: structure in writing
second activity
“home” work
Draft a visual outline/blueprint of your ‘home’ (at least two rooms and how they connect).
Provide a brief written ‘tour’ of your home.
sample student work
student feedback
I liked it because it gave me a picture of my house to remember the steps in writing.
Drawing a floor plan helped me write about my home because it gave a visual image of exactly what I wanted to include so I could write about each room step by step.
I found visualizing made it easier than just writing.
I learned how similar the connections were between a home and a piece of writing. I will always remember this assignment.
principles
TAP – always be clear.Drawings don’t have to be perfect or
complete: just enough for the concept. It’s about the connections: having the
doodler/artist explain those is a key part of the process.
