WELCOME TO HOPETOUN HOUSE AND GROUNDSThis map shows what to look out for as you stroll in our magnificent Grounds. Before you set off, however, drop into the Ranger’s Exhibition where you will find lots of fascinating facts that will help you make the most of your walk.
Enjoy your visit.
From the viewpoint you can look down on the North Deer Park where you may see our herd of red deer. There are stunning views north over the Firth of Forth
to the Ochil and Cleish Hills and west to Blackness Castle
and beyond.
West Bastion Viewpoint
This sheltered and secluded walk leads along the perimeter wall and past the best of our spectacular rhododendrons. This is a great place to catch the
sun on a nice day and foxgloves abound here in
June and July.
Hope’s Walk
The Round Pond was partof the original scheme for Hopetoun House and perfectly reflects the building. From this point you can also
look back over the ha-ha, the deep boundary ditch,
to see fallow deer in the fields beyond.

This folly, known as the ‘Pulpit’, was originally part of William Adam’s arcade for the Spring Garden. The sculpture ‘Salomé’ by
artist John Skelton was commissioned by the 3rd Marquess and added in
1963. The Bruce façade of the House can be glimpsed along
Linlithgow view.
South Grounds and ‘Pulpit’
In early spring, daffodils carpet the slope above the Bowling Green and primroses, bluebells and
other wildflowers grow in abundance.

The mythical sphinxes stand guard at the entrance to the Royal Drive waiting to challenge those who wish to
cross. The horseshoe shaped East Lawns cover an area of
approximately four football pitches and are bounded by a
ha-ha or a deep ditch.

The stone eagle above the North End Gate looks out over the Forth to its previous perch at the former home
of the Hope family in Ceres, Fife. The courtyard beyond
this Gate now houses private studios.

In the wooded area between the Sea Walk Trail and the West Lawns, you will see the miniature headstones where
many of the Hope family pets are buried.
