I am often asked “How do you participate and attend so many community
events and engage in community activities as often as you do?” or “What hat
are you wearing today?” I have also been asked “When do you rest and why
would you want to wear so many hats?” I simply respond “I was raised to
give to others, never say no to someone in need and always be the first to lead,
even if it scares you”. As Trustee and as “Andy Harris” this is just who I am.
I strive to be a leader, but in all actuality all I really want to be is part of a
“TEAM” doing the right thing, for a good cause. I believe my role as Trustee is to influence others
in a positive way in my community by participation of myself, my daughter or utilizing the Wayne
Township Fire Department or government
employees in order to help other charities,
Churches, Not for Profits, Schools or the lives
of our residents. I believe life is about serving
and helping someone, not what you can get
from someone. I never look at what I do as
“wearing many hats”, I look at it as giving
back to our community. There are so many
opportunities to serve in our community; to
help a child, senior citizens, neighborhood
organizations or various charities. Volunteer-
ing will not only help these organizations
grow, but will also help you understand and
gain knowledge of their mission. This is why
I find it so important to be engaged with the
west side of Indianapolis, and the city as a
whole. My first start in community service
was with former Indianapolis Mayor William
Hudnut. In this picture, I was only 14 years of
age, and yes I had hair! I was so honored to be
known as “Clarence Clean-Up”, a
mascot\leader for the City of Indianapolis in
Mayor Hudnut’s Keep Indianapolis Clean
initiative. As Clarence, I had the responsibility
to be a role model for the kids around me, the
community and to always work hard to keep
our city clean. (continued on page two )
Dear Wayne Township Residents and Businesses:
Volume 3 Issue 8 Volume 3 Issue 8 Wayne Township Trustee’s Newsletter
In Wayne Township it is very easy to find service organizations in our area that serves our youth and elderly that are starving
for your help. I know I have enjoyed my earlier years as Clarence Clean-Up, coaching and officiating basketball to the kids at
Hawthorne, Christamore House, Thatcher, Ben Davis, St. Christopher School, Cardinal Ritter, Speedway and Municipal Gardens.
I am still serving my community 35 years later by doing neighborhood clean-ups and so much more. Below are many organizations
that I am engaged with today, and are available for you to give back to. So take a look and see where you can help give back to
OUR COMMUNITY!
If you are interested in engaging with one of these organizations either call the number I have shown, GOOGLE it, and or reach out
to me and I will be happy to put you in contact with the right person:
Hawthorne Community Center (317-637-4312)
Haughville Community which has the Christamore House (317-635-1388)
Ben Davis and Speedway have great sport youth programs
Ben Davis DADS Program, which is a mentoring program and support team of men helping MSD of Wayne Township
(317-313-9450)
Beacon of HOPE, which is a Domestic Violence Support Center for women (317-731-6131)
H.O.S.T. S. Helping One Student To Succeed, which is a program that helps students to read and comprehend better,
(317-988-8675)
Numerous Neighborhood Associations’
Numerous Churches
Ben Davis Lions, Clermont Lions, Chapel Hill Lions and Speedway Lions Clubs
500 Optimists Club
MOOSE Family Fraternity
West Side Chamber of Commerce (Rick Proctor 317-247-5002)
40 West Professional and Business Club (Becki Viewegh 317-246-6269)
BUT, most importantly don’t volunteer so much that you neglect your family or friends in need. Remember it is always good to give
to others, but you must take care of your home first, before taking care of others.
Blessed to serve you,
~Trustee Andy Harris

We began scheduling appointments on June 16, 2014
Program will run from July 1, 2014 through September 30th
We provide $170.00 voucher per child that qualifies for assistance
Our vouchers are accepted at Davis Jeans and K-Mart on Washington
Street as well as Shoppers World at Lafayette Square Mall. These loca-
tions are aware what can and can’t be purchased with our school vouch-
ers.
We base our pricing on Uniforms and this voucher should get you 5 days
worth of shirts, pants and or skirts, underwear, socks and a belt. In many
cases these items are now on sale and shoes are also obtainable.
Shoppers World provides our clients with a 10% coupon for uniforms.
If a child grows out of their clothing after our program ends a letter from
the school is required.
To receive assistance from the Trustee’s office you must be in the United
States legally. If a parent is not here legally but a child is a United States
Citizen and the family qualifies for assistance we will assist with school
clothing.
Every case is different and many factors are looked at how best to assist a client, so we have no answer of what is needed to qualify
without an interview and review of the client’s needs.

Ralph Gordon "Bud" Bee, 86, of Indianapolis a First Responder, Fire Fighter, Police
Officer, Navy Veteran, passed away July 18, 2014 at 10:00 pm. He served his
community in many capacities, but his love was the Fire Department and First
Responder. Ralph was born on June 13, 1928 in Gully Mills West VA to Bernard and
Anna (Bowers) Bee. Ralph graduated from George Washington High School and
served our country during WWII and Korea as a Seabee and a Roscoe Raider and a
P.O.W. After serving in the military he began his working career at Kingan's Meat
Packing Plant. Then he became an inspector for Insurance Service Offices and also
became one of the founders of Station #10 of Wayne Township Fire Department in
Clermont, Indiana. He was driven to serve and earned the reputation in Clermont as
an unselfish man who did whatever job needed to be done-whatever way he had to do
it. He was not afraid to voice his opinions on anything including the weather. As he
worked his way up in the Fire Department he became Chief and was also known as
"Pops" around fire headquarters. He was a member of Chapel Rock Christian Church
and a life time member of the Clermont Lions Club where he served in many roles
including as Past President, Vice-President, et. al. He was also a Mason and member
of the Blue Goose, Ward Chairman of the Wayne Township GOP, and a Special
Deputy for the Marion County Sheriff's Department, an officer for Clermont Police Department and worked for both Dick Simon
Racing and C and H Racing Teams. Ralph was also a part of USAC Officials and the Indy 500 Old Timers Club, which was the
Safety Patrol at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was also a Redman's Lodge member. Ralph was preceded in death by his
wife Doris M. (Byrum) Bee and nine siblings. Ralph is survived by his daughters Maria L. Aytes and Lynda R. (Jerry) Hughbanks
and his grandchildren Stacey M. King, Jasmine B. Gibson, Sarah Rose, Thomas Griffith and Ted Hughbanks and five great grand-
children, His siblings include Donald (Linda) Bee, Howard (Sonia) Bee and Sherry Tamlin.
Officers of the Indianapolis Police Department were dispatched
to the 3400 block of Forest Manor on a report of shots fired on
July 6th. When officers arrived, they approached a group of
unidentified subjects in the alley near this location. As officers
approached, the suspect opened fire on the two officers. IMPD
officers immediately returned fire striking the suspect. During
the exchange of gunfire 21 ½ year-veteran IMPD Officer Perry
Renn was struck. Officer Renn was rushed by EMS officials to
Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. At approximately 9:58
p.m. Officer Renn died of his injuries. “This is a sad day for the
IMPD family and the community as a whole”, said Chief Rick
Hite “Please keep Officer Renn’s family in your prayers. We
will remain vigilant as we continue to take care of one another
and the city in the days and weeks to come.” There was a
community-wide outrage over the suggestion that slain IMPD Officer Renn should have stayed in his car once he spotted a man
armed with an AK-47. IMPD Officers pledge, “we will always get out of our cars!”

On September 4th at the Wayne Township Government Center we will be dedicating our
Community Room to Merri Anderson. Please join us. Merri was not only an employee of
mine, her involvement in the community was heartfelt and true to many organizations. She
was the president of the Greater Garden City Civic Association and September 4th will be
their first official meeting without her and I can’t think of a better way to honor her than to
have the dedication on that night.

So many people have ask, “Where can I drop off my unused
or expired prescriptions?” With the rate of prescription drug
abuse especially among teens (24% of high school students -
more than 5 million kids have abused prescription
medication. )
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department now has a safe way
to dispose of prescriptions/medication. They have the drug
dropbox at 40 South Alabama Street, accessible 24/7.
Let’s be a responsible community and utilize this dropbox
and keep our children safe!

Dear Mr. Harris,
I just want to thank you for
helping me the other night. It
was really kind and some-
thing you didn’t have to do.
Thank you so much for teach-
ing me how to change my tire.
I will definitely need to know
how to do that in the future
when I am alone. Let’s just
hope that I don’t have to use
those skills soon. Anyways,
thank you so much for all that
you did and your hospitality.
