The Mon Valley CaliforniaWhat do California, PA and the
state of California have in common?
Visitors can find out by stopping by
the California Area Historical Society.
Located in the Gallagher House,
which was built in 1895 and is now
listed in the National Register of
Historic Places, the Society offers
plenty of information about the
borough’s history.
Charleroi
In the early 1900s, Charleroi was
a hotbed of unrest. From his
Fallowfield Avenue print shop,
anarchist Louis Goaziou was writing
and editing the paper L’Union des
Travailleurs (aka The Workers’
Union). More than a century later, the
Charleroi Area Historical Society is
transforming the old print shop into a
new museum.
DonoraIn October 1948, smog literally
suffocated the Monongahela River
town of Donora, resulting in the
hospitalization of more than 7,000
people and the deaths of 20. Today,
the Donora Smog Museum stands as
a reminder that “Clean Air Started
Here”. Also found in Donora is
Cement City. This neighborhood’s
claim to fame is its 80 Prairie-style
houses, circa 1916, made of poured
concrete. Today, Cement City is listed
on the Register of National Historic
Places.

Jefferson Township
Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic VillageOne day in 1955, Albert Miller looked into a groundhog hole on his farm. What he found ultimately prompted the University of Pittsburgh’s anthropology department to embark on an archaeological dig that unearthed artifacts dating back 16,000 years. Now, thanks to a recently—constructed enclosure, travelers to the Rockshelter can peer into the oldest and deepest parts of the excavation site. In addition, visitors can experience life in a 16th century Indian village, an 18th century frontier farm and a 19th century rural village. Meadowcroft was named a National Historic Landmark in 2005.
Jefferson TownshipBack in 1853, Jefferson Township carved out its corner (the western
part of Cross Creek Township) of Washington County. More recently,
the Jefferson Township Historical Society completed the restoration
of two significant structures — Heritage Hall and the White Church. In
addition, the Society unveiled a Veterans Memorial engraved with the
names of more than 1,100 service men and women.

National RoadThe first thoroughfare built entirely with Federal funds, Route 40 (as it is known in some parts) began to take shape in 1811. But when the money stopped flowing in the 1830s, so did construction. Paralleling the military road forged by George Washington and General Edward Braddock in the mid 1700s, the National Road’s 600-plus miles start in Maryland and traverse through Pennsylvania (PA boasts 90 of those miles), West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana, ending in Illinois. First used by pioneers in Conestoga wagons and then by families in station wagons, the National Road was designed to accommodate travelers. To that end, stone and brick taverns lined its path. Some of those original structures still stand, like Scenery Hill’s Century Inn. In the late 1920s, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution commissioned statues of pioneer mothers known as Madonnas of the Trail. Washington County’s Madonna can be found in Beallsville.

Duncan & Miller Glass Museum
Duncan & Miller Glass Museum The Duncan & Miller Glass Factory operated from 1893 until the company closed its doors in 1955. Opening its doors in 1993, the Duncan & Miller Glass Museum, found on Jefferson Avenue just a block away from the original plant, is home to photos, memorabilia, tools of the trade and, of course, glassware of all shapes, sizes and patterns.
The David Bradford HouseIn the late 18th century, Washington County Attorney
General David Bradford led mobs in protest of high
federal taxes in what would become known as the
Whiskey Rebellion. In response, President George
Washington sent General “Light Horse” Harry
Lee, along with 13,000 other troops, to quash the
uprising. Built in 1788, Bradford’s house still stands
today (on Main Street in the City of Washington, PA)
as a place where visitors may experience the past.

The LeMoyne HouseBuilt in 1812, the LeMoyne House, located on East Maiden Street in the City of Washington, PA, was the state’s first national historic landmark of the Underground Railroad — one of only six in the country. Physician and inventor Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne is also credited with establishing the first crematorium in the U.S. Today, his home (complete with period artifacts) is open to visitors and houses the Washington County Historical Society.

Pennsylvania Trolley MuseumBack in 1949, three forward—looking streetcar enthusiasts decided the time was right to lay down the track for the creation of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. More than six decades later, the facility is now the largest trolley museum in the state. Its education center features authentic tokens, tickets and schedules, period advertisements, photos and dioramas. Its 4-mile (round trip) track takes visitors for rides on beautifully and meticulously restored trolley cars (the museum’s volunteers do most of the work themselves). And its huge — 28,000-square-foot — display building highlights 30-some different trolleys.

If you agree that the perfect day in a perfect
world includes some combination of eating,
sleeping and shopping (and really, who could
argue with that) then the real question
becomes a matter of location, location,
location.
Fortunately, Washington County is the place
for eating (gourmet meals to family fare),
sleeping (campgrounds to luxury hotels) and
shopping (outlets to specialty stores and
everything in between).

OUTDOORFUN &
You don’t have to travel far or wide to enjoy all
the outdoor fun Washington County has to offer.
Seriously, you could golf, fish, hike, bike, hunt or
simply sightsee till your heart’s content.
And when it comes to festivals, Washington
County boasts the annual covered bridge
extravaganza, 4th of July celebrations,
Oktoberfest, apple and pumpkin fests and, of
course, the county agricultural fair.

EDUCATION
There’s nothing complicated about finding your bliss in Washington County.
In fact, you can hear it in the performances of the orchestra, jazz ensemble and choir groups. You can see it in the theatrical productions and art gallery showings. You can experience it in the events sponsored by community and cultural centers.
And if you’re looking for some tangible acknowledgment that you are on the path to enlightenment, the area institutions of higher learning offer certificates and degrees (providing you pass your courses).
I was the big man on campus.
