REFINED POWER SOLUTIONS ONSHORE AND OFFSHORE
Wärtsilä is the supplier of heavy-duty diesel
and gas engines – onshore as well as offshore.
Wärtsilä engines are true baseload engines
designed for continuous duty in severe
applications. The extensive engine programme
covers unit outputs ranging from 1000 kW
(1,360 hp) up to 17.5 MW (23,535 hp).
Wärtsilä has a portfolio of powerful
reciprocating engines with versatile fuelling
from natural gas to crude oil with power,
efficiency and emission rates superior to other
technologies. Today, diesel and gas engines
have replaced traditional solutions in power
generation and mechanical drives especially
within the power range of 1-20 MW.
Wärtsilä supplies a total factory-
engineered package including design, project
management, installation and lifecycle support
to match the specific needs of your business.
For the oil and gas industry Wärtsilä provides
solutions with an outstanding lifecycle value,
fulfilling the most stringent safety and reliability
criteria in the world.
WHERE THERE IS OIL AND GAS – THERE IS WÄRTSILÄ The choice of fuel is an important factor
when evaluating the reliability, availability and
lifecycle cost of power production for oil and
gas production and transportation.
Traditionally the lifting of the crude was
used as a benchmark. Today, the concept
of intrinsic value of the fuel has become the
determining factor.
Whatever fuel is chosen, the Wärtsilä
power solution can always be switched over
to another fuel depending on availability,
fluctuating prices or changes in environmental
regulations. When fuel supply is insecure or
prices are volatile, a gas-diesel or dual-fuel
solution will provide total flexibility.

FUEL OFF THE WELL – CRUDE OIL, GAS, OR BOTH?
The oil and gas industry has one
outstanding advantage. The fuel is right
there – in the ground. The obvious solution
is to use the same crude oil or natural gas
to run the engines. Wärtsilä engines run
smoothly on crude oil and gas or as dual-
fuel versions for optimum flexibility.

FROM WELLHEAD TO REFINERY FEED – A TOTAL SOLUTION WITH GUARANTEED RELIABILITY
Deciding what is the optimum power
technology and equipment for any upstream
oil and gas operation is a demanding task.
What are the extreme ambient conditions?
Which fuel is available? What is the load
profile?
The basic parameters are known today, but
they could change during detailed engineering
or construction, and certainly just after
commissioning! Over the lifetime of an oil
field the power demand, crude oil quality and
quantity, gas quality and quantity and even
the operation and maintenance regime will
change. On top of that, the economic impact
is huge. Early production is highly valued and
downtime is out of the question.
Coupled with the strict health and safety
regulations and environmental concerns,
the choice of prime movers for the power
production system has become a key issue
for success. Wärtsilä has developed a portfolio
of prime movers that places top priority on
fuel flexibility and environmental compliance.
Coupled with conservative loading, strict quality
control and a worldwide factory-controlled
service organization, a Wärtsilä power solution
is always a safe choice.
The floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Petrojarl 1 has been equipped with two additional Wärtsilä 18V32DF (12.1 MW, 16200 hp) engines for a new period of operation in the North Sea.

WÄRTSILÄ ENGINE TECHNOLOGY
A reciprocating engine is the most efficient
way of converting liquid or gaseous fuels
into power. Wärtsilä has introduced a wide
portfolio of reciprocating engines with
modern combustion technology and with a
broad range of fuelling options resulting in
high shaft efficiency up to 47%.
The range covers both gas- and oil-fuelled
prime movers with outputs from 1000 kW
up to 17 MW. Reliability, high efficiency,
environmental friendliness and total economy
are the key drivers for Wärtsilä’s activities in
the oil and gas industry. This is why Wärtsilä
has more than 3000 MW in the oil and gas
arena, in operation onshore and offshore, all
around the globe.
WÄRTSILÄ 20 POWERSKID Wärtsilä packages diesel generating sets as
skid-mounted units in the range from 1000 to
1600 kW. We are specialized in customizing
power units to fit the special demands and
harsh environment of applications in the oil
and gas industry. Skid-mounted units are
manufactured and designed to meet the
strictest quality demands. All units are factory
tested before delivery. If the heart fails, nothing
works. Man or machine, you rely on it. So
be sure that the power pack is powered by
Wärtsilä.
WÄRTSILÄ DIESEL ENGINES Besides diesel oil, Wärtsilä diesel engines can
also run on crude and heavy fuel oils with
a viscosity up to 2000 cSt @ 50 °C and a
sulphur content up to 5%. Wärtsilä engines
are based on the experience of demanding
applications in the power generation, offshore
and marine industries. Wärtsilä made its first
major impact on the power industry with the
launch of the heavy-oil-fuelled Wärtsilä 32 cm
bore engine in the 1970s. Since that time, our
customers have purchased more than 6000
of these 32 cm bore engines globally. In a
world of increasing fuel prices, a diesel engine
designed to use heavy residual fuel or crude
oil is the obvious choice. This has convincingly

been demonstrated in the power generation
and shipping industry, where steam turbines
were the dominant power source before the
oil crisis. The Wärtsilä crude burning engines
tolerate loads down to 20% of rated power; no
switching over to diesel oil is necessary at low
loads. The crude burning engine can be started
and stopped on crude oil – no diesel fuel is
required other than as back-up fuel.

SG operation Dual-fuel operation GD operation
WÄRTSILÄ SPARK-IGNITED GAS ENGINES Wärtsilä SG engines are spark-ignited gas
engines built on the sturdy frame of a diesel
engine. Gaseous fuel is mixed into the
combustion air and into the pre-chamber at
a pressure of 5 bar. A spark plug in the pre-
chamber is used to ignite the gas. SG engines
have a shaft efficiency up to 46% and the
largest SG engine Wärtsilä produces today has
a unit power of 9000 kW (12,000 hp).
WÄRTSILÄ DUAL-FUEL ENGINES To generate reliable power from ‘fuel off the
well’ is a demanding task. For this purpose
Wärtsilä has developed two different dual-fuel
concepts: the DF (dual-fuel) and the GD (gas
diesel) engines.
In the DF engines the gaseous fuel is
mixed into the combustion air before it enters
the combustion chamber. The ignition is
accomplished by injecting a small amount of
liquid fuel (crude or diesel oil) as pilot fuel.
The DF engine can operate in both 100%
fuel oil mode and in 99% gas / ~1% fuel oil
mode with optimum performance. The DF
concept is mainly used in applications where
pipeline quality gas with a high methane
number is available.
The switch between liquid fuel mode and
natural gas mode takes place seamlessly and
without interruption to power production.
OPERATION ON BOTH ASSOCIATED GAS AND CRUDE OIL In the gas-diesel (GD) engine the gaseous
fuel is injected directly into the combustion
chamber at a pressure of 350 bar.
Pilot fuel oil (5%) is needed to ignite the
main combustion. The GD engine can run in
either 95% gas / 3% liquid fuel mode or in
100% liquid fuel mode, as well as any other
gas-to-liquid fuel ratio in between.

PRIME MOVERS FOR THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY
Wärtsilä power solutions are based on
proven Wärtsilä engines, tuned to meet
the special needs of power generation,
gas compression and pumping
applications in the oil and gas industry.
Wärtsilä prime movers are designed to run
on various liquid and gaseous fuels. The main
component is a complete factory-engineered
and factory-assembled power train with
the engine and alternator or, in the case of
pipeline application, a gearbox and pump or a
compressor, all mounted on a baseframe.
Wärtsilä can offer complete string testing
of the finished unit. Fuel treatment systems,
cooling systems, control panels, automation
systems, and other supporting systems needed
for the complete installation, are engineered as
pretested factory modules, which minimizes field
installation and secures quality and functionality.
All technical solutions, manufacturing, test
procedures and products comply with the ISO
9001 quality system accredited by Det Norske
Veritas (DNV). If specified, the design can also
comply with relevant standards of the American
Petroleum Institute (API).
The Wärtsilä prime movers offer flexibility
and uncompromising long-term performance
in extremely challenging conditions where
other technologies lose efficiency and output –
from the extreme high altitudes and blistering
hot and dry conditions of the world’s most
unforgiving deserts, to the freezing cold of the
arctic tundra.
Since the environment is one of
today’s major concerns, an equipment
investment must meet current and future
demands. Wärtsilä plants meet World
Bank environmental guidelines for thermal
power plants. Wärtsilä also has extensive
experience and expertise to support the
preparation of environmental impact studies.
Over the past 30 years Wärtsilä has
installed a total of 32 GW of power in nearly
4000 power plant projects in more than 140
countries. And there is plenty more to come!
