Demand high for new subdivisionMonique Bergman
The demand for land in Richmond re-mains high with a large number of house and land packages already sold in a new 53 lot subdivision located off Wensley Rd.Construction is underway on Langdale Grove, a former berry farm, owned by Home Living Solutions, a syndicate made up of four local businessmen. Graham Vercoe of G.J. Gardner Homes Nelson-Tasman, Simon Collett of Jennian Homes
Nelson and Milestone Homes Nelson Bays, Gary of Donaldson Civil and Andrew Spit-tal, of Ching Contracting Ltd have joined together for this project.“As builders we are in control of the sub-division, so we can meet the demands and requests from our clients and we are able to manage the entire process from consent to planning and construction, making it easier for new home owners,” says Gra-ham, director of Home Living Solutions. The subdivision is offering a new concept
with mixed-sized house and land pack-ages to suit different lifestyles with stage one consisting of 30 lots and stage two of 23 lots. Working exclusively with build-ing companies, Milestone Homes, Jenn-ian Homes and GJ Gardner Homes, fixed packages ranging in price from $480,000 to $600,000 are available.Graham says the plan to offer mixed-sized houses and sections was decided upon

The Cricket World Cup has ar-rived in Nelson and locals are embracing it wholeheartedly. The first ever ICC Cricket World Cup game to be played in Nelson went off without a hitch yesterday at Saxton Oval.A capacity crowd got right in the spirit with plenty of Irish and West Indies support seen on the embankment.Nelson Cricket Association chairman, Dave Leonard, says it was a perfect day for the big game. “It’s pretty amazing. The ground looks unbelievable and I’m sure it looked great on TV, which is good for Nelson.”Dave says he was playing first class cricket for Central Dis-tricts when the 1992 world Cup was held in New Zealand and Australia and the thought that it would come to Nelson one day was “quite unbeliev-able”.“It goes to show all the hard
work from so many people. I hope there’s a lot of people feeling pretty proud today of the input they’ve had in getting these games here.”Saxton Oval will play host to two more world cup games
over the next few weeks. Zim-babwe verses the United Arab Emirates this Thursday, Febru-ary 19, and Bangladesh verses Scotland on March 5. For tickets call 0508 292 2015 or see cricketworldcup.com

after feedback gained from clients over the past three years.“Some people are retired and want-ing to down size and only require one garage and others want larger family-sized homes with more land”, says Graham. Tasman District Council has given approval to build four new show-homes in the subdivision and construction has now started on the two GJ Gardner Homes, one
Milestone Home and one Jennian Home. Stage one of the subdivi-sion, is nearing completion with the road being sealed this week, how-ever building on these lots will not start until around April, when titles come through. Stage two building will commence once stage one has been completed.Four building gangs and multiple contractors are currently on site with an increase of workers expect-ed when stage one building com-mences.

The Black Caps made a great start to the Cricket World Cup by beating Sri Lanka last weekend. Do you think they can go all the way?
A fine day, good marketing and “getting the recipe right” com-bined to make Sunday’s Bright-water Wine and Food Festival a success with a big crowd en-joying the best of the region’s wine, beer, food and music at Middle-Earth Vineyard. The Rotary Club of Richmond’s fundraising event made a suc-cessful return to the social cal-endar last year when about 3500 people attended after it had been put on hold in 2013. It was even better this year with over 4000 people enjoying the festivities and raising “at least $30,000” for the community.“We’ve got over 4000 people which is well past the 3500 we had last year,” Rotary’s Pete Glue says. “We’d pre-sold 1300 tickets, which was up on the 850 we pre-sold last year, so we thought if we had a good day we’d get a good crowd.“We didn’t want any rain but we didn’t want it to be 28 de-grees either so we were lucky it was just right. We also got our marketing right and the recipe right and, of course, we have this great venue.“We haven’t had time to work out how much the festival made but it would more than the $29,800 we made last year - it would be at least $30,000.”
Pete says the all the wineries, breweries and food stalls were busy as were the waterboys and girls from Knapps Law-yers who were dispensing cool drinking water. It was also a big day out for the estimated 50 volunteers from Wanderers Sports Club, Rich-mond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Brightwater Rural Fire Brigade, St John, Brightwater School, Hype-GS and Nelson Marine Rescue who helped Rotary run the festival smoothly.Pete says the proceeds from the festival will be donated to all of those volunteer groups as well as to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.
“Our volunteers did a great job and we’ll be helping the people who helped us.”Nelson police Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Wardle says the festival goers were “well behaved and jovial” and there were no problems. He says po-lice stopped 550 vehicles leav-ing the festival and only issued one infringement notice for a driver with blood alcohol of 296mg, 46 over the new limit.“That’s an outstanding result,” Mike says. “People are really taking on board the new limit which is pleasing - they know the limit is low and the chances of being caught drink driving are high.”

The dry weather is starting to hit market gar-deners and apple growers around the Tasman district and the situation could get worse with the Tasman District Council considering tighter water restrictions this week.“We are due to start sowing winter crops on Feb-ruary 20, if we haven’t got water for the new crops, then we will have to choose what to plant,” Main Rd Hope market gardener Gavin Williams says. “We can just survive on stage two but if it goes to stage three, it is going to really hurt us.“Everyone is in the same boat and has the same issues. An-other fortnight of no rain is going to be a real problem.” The council’s Dry Weather Taskforce imposed stage two water rationing in six of eight Waimea zones on Monday and was to meet on Tuesday night to consider increasing the rationing to stage three. Stage two rationing enforces a 35 per cent cut in consented water takes with stage three increasing to a 50 per cent cut.Director of Appleby Fresh Ltd, Mark O’Connor, says they have a good irrigation system plan for the dry weather and will be able to “manage the plants” to get through the rationing. However, Mark concedes that it will be a concern if the rationing moves to stage three next Monday. The water rationing is also likely to hurt apple growers although the timing of the cuts is pro-
viding some relief because the harvest has al-ready started. Wai-West Horticulture’s managing director Nick Patterson says the dry summer has made it hard to increase the size of fruit on their 100 hectares of apple orchards and the possibility of going to stage three rationing is “a real concern”.“We haven’t really had any significant rain since
Christmas and that’s impacted on fruit size. It’s likely that it will go to stage three and that’s a real concern.”Although the harvest had al-ready started Nick says it still had a long way to go and the water rationing would have a big impact on the latter ripening varieties.
Urban users are also being affected by the cuts with council enforcing a ban on watering lawns in Richmond, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Hope, Bright-water and Wakefield and their rural extensions. Hand-held hosing is only permitted for produc-tive gardens on odd and even days correspond-ing to the house street number.Council’s environmental information manager, Rob Smith says the taskforce was due to meet on Tuesday night when it would consider a number of factors including the weather forecast, river flows and aquifer levels before deciding whether or not to go to stage three rationing. “The aquifers are going down but the rivers have held up well. The salinity levels in the coastal bores is also good so far but do we go to stage three? Who knows.”

Market gardeners, Gavin and Angela Williams of PYO 185 Main Road Hope, say stage two water restrictions imposed by Tasman District Council this week may affect their winter crops. Photo: Monique Bergman.

Students wanting to enrol in retail and comput-ing courses at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s Richmond Campus are hoping that a funding application is successful other-wise the courses will be cut.NMIT has been offering a National Certificate in Retail and Certificate in Computer Technol-ogy (Level 3) at the Lower Queen St campus in partnership with the Skills Update Training Institute. But last week, NMIT’s chief operating officer Martin Vanner confirmed that the two, 20 to 26-week, courses had been cancelled due to funding cuts by the government’s Tertiary Education Commission. However, Martin says the courses, which had been due to start “in a couple of weeks”, could be reinstated if a last ditch funding application to TEC is successful. He didn’t know how long it would take for the application to be processed. Martin says NMIT has “an obligation to make sure any of the students who had started the courses will finish”. He also says there are no plans to close the campus and will continue to offer horticulture, fire fighting and conserva-tion courses at Richmond. Martin says NMIT has been working with Skills Update Training Institute for “nine or 10 years” and is still contracting them to run a number of programmes. The Auckland-based institute is one of the New Zealand’s largest pri-vate training organisations. Skills Update general manager Omid Mohtadi says he can’t discuss the staffing issues related to the two courses until he knows the outcome of NMIT’s funding application. “No staff are affected at this time but if the out-come (of the funding application) is negative, that is a different story,” he says. Omid says the two courses had “two to three classes of around 45 to 60 students last year and he hopes the funding will be approved so they can continue this year. There is a waiting list for the courses and he says if the funding is ap-proved they could resume at short notice.

The Nelson Druids have helped enhance the Hope Recreation Reserve donating a picnic table and all the furniture, fittings and utensils in their Maitai Lodge to the community. The Druids have restored and maintained the Maitai Lodge which was originally situated at Ranzau School before be-ing relocated to Hope Do-main where it was used by scout groups. The lodge is still used by the Druids for their fortnightly meetings but is also available for community groups who book the building through the Hope Recreation Reserve management commit-tee.Last week, the Druids officially handed over the furnishings, fittings and utensils of the lodge to the Tasman District Council to be used by all the community. The group, which has about 60 members, also donated a picnic table situated near the children’s playground which Hope Recreation Re-
serve management commit-tee member Greg Buck says is a very nice gesture by the Druids. “The lodge is an ideal venue for small sports groups and clubs to hold meetings, so it’s very generous of the Druids to donate all the things inside,” Greg says. “All the furniture and fittings are usually the things that the hall committee have to raise funds to buy.” Druid Bob Stewart says it made sense to formally hand
over the picnic table and con-tents of the lodge because they were being used by the com-munity anyway. “We all have to live in and share this place so we thought we’d make it formally available to all other users,” Bob says. The hand-over ceremony was attended by 11members of the Druids, Greg and Tasman dis-trict councillor Judene Edgar and staff member Steve Rich-ards.

The Nelson Motor Show has exceeded the ex-pectations of organiser Steve Steele with a record number of people enjoying the three day event. The show began with a Black Friday Cruz around Nelson and Richmond and ended with a prize giving and raffle draw on Sunday. Over the three days of the motor show, three convertible cars were raffled off to new owners with a BMW making its way to Clyde, a Mustang heading off to Christchurch and a Ford Capri going to Rich-mond man, Al Bates. The highlight of the weekend also saw a night of entertainment thanks to Urzila Carlson, at which an airbrushed portrait of the show’s origi-nal special guest, Ewen Gilmour, was auctioned off for $1600. Amongst those with cars on display at the motor show was Richmond man Nick Appelman with his iconic, award winning car, Behemoth. “It started out as a 1954 Chevrolet four-door sedan,
and it’s been fully customised,” says Nick. “I’d al-ways wanted an American car and back in 1991 I had an accident and I had time on my hands, so I started drawing pictures of the car that I wanted. We changed every panel on the car. First time round I got help from a friend of mine who was a panel beater. It was close but not quite how I wanted it, so I had a trip to America and man-aged to get some parts that I really wanted, like tail lights, and that inspired me to redo the whole thing to exactly how I’d drawn it.”Organiser Steve Steele confirmed that the show was definitely bigger than ever before thanks to the success of last year and the fact people were out and about due to other events on over the weekend. The top two awards for People’s Choice and Best in Show both went to locals with Craig Adams from Motueka taking out People’s Choice with his 1973 Dodge Challenger and Richmond man Grant Kerr winning best in show with his 1963 Holden EJ Ute.

Chris Scott has ridden the width of the South Island 11 separate times to help raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation, this month he’ll do it with some extra motiva-tion.Chris, his wife Sheila and son Ari, will all ride the Child Cancer Charity Ride from Greymouth to Christchurch, raising money for the house in Christchurch where young cancer patients stay.Chris says, for the first time he knows someone staying in the house. “A friend of ours, Petra Nugent, had cancer last year, and now her daughter Jemma has cancer and is currently down there having treat-ment and staying at the accommo-
dation. So it means a little bit more to us this year.”The family had another cancer blow just before Christmas when Chris’ father was diagnosed with the disease. “It’s pretty tough and he’s been laid up since Christmas, but it’s great to be able to do a little bit of some-thing going back the other way.”So far the family have collected around $500 in donations and are hoping to raise $1000, before the ride on February 20 and 21 with 30 other cyclists. The ride has been going for 28 years and has raised around $300,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation. To donate, you can deposit money into the Post Charity Bikathon ac-count, 38-9001-0022368-00 and use “Chris Scott” as the reference.

The best thing that profes-sional free-ride mountain-biker Kelly McGarry learned when he was student at Waimea Intermediate was how to cook “a mean rice ri-sotto”.Last week, Kelly returned to Waimea Intermediate to take the students through some biking skills as part of the Konica Minolta Nelson Bikefest. And while he was there, he caught up with food
technology teacher Helen McCallum who had taught him the recipe 20 years ago.“Helen McCallum is the only teacher I had who is still there and I remember she showed us how to cook a mean rice risotto,” Kelly says. “She’s a great lady and I still use that recipe.”Kelly, who back-flipped to fame at the Red Bull Ram-page free-ride event in Utah in 2013, says “I was a cheeky little ratbag when I was at Waimea Intermediate but I
liked going to the school.“We use to get up to no good with all my mates on the bus from Wakefield. I man-aged to stay out of trouble though.”Although Kelly was focusing on the students bike skills last Wednesday, he did take time to pass on some good advice about life.“I let them know that they can achieve anything if they really set their minds to it.”Kelly left Nelson on Thurs-day.

The Reapers Motorbike Club is hosting a heck of a party at Owen River next month and while they’re there they will be raising money for a good cause. The annual party is now in its third year and will see a couple of hundred motorbike enthu-siasts head down to the Owen River Domain. The family-friendly event is welcome to any-one but does have a motorbike focus. A live band, A.M.O.S, will entertain party-goers on Saturday night and club member Tony Daw-son says it will be a great weekend.“This is the first year we’ve really advertised it to people outside our social club and usually we get around 150 people, so we’re expecting a few more this year.”Raffles will be held during the weekend to raise money for Child Cancer Research. The Owen River Party is being held on March 6 and 7 at the Owen River Domain. Entry is $20 and food will be available on-site.

Nelson MP, Nick Smith is asking the Nelson City Council to reduce its water take from the Roding River and instead use water stored in the Maitai dam, to help remedy the water shortage in the Waimea catchment that is im-pacting on the region’s horticulture.“The City Council has the choice of accessing our town water supply from either the Rod-ing River or the Maitai Dam. Even though the Maitai Dam is at near full capacity it has been choosing to use the Roding River supply as it requires less treatment.” He says the Rod-ing flows into the Waimea system, and “every litre taken is a litre less” that can be used for maintaining Waimea’s horticultural industries.

Golfer being hit ‘not funny’:Not really all that funny. A visiting golfer at a course in Winchburgh,
West Lothian, Scotland, was awarded the equivalent of around 800 000, that’s right, eight hundred thousand NZ dollars, after losing the sight of an eye. The court held the golfer who hit the shot 70 per cent to blame with the club having 30 per cent for not having adequate signs warning of pos-sible hazards. It made clubs the length of the country review their course signage. Sandy L (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).
Busy weekend:What a great weekend. I took my family to the motor show, cricket

Why no lights for Auckland Point?I would like to ask why Auckland
Point School still has not got the 40km per hour speed lights set up at most schools. All I have seen done is a bit of white paint put down for controlling the traffic. I
would say that the area where the school is, is an accident waiting to happen. Can any-body tell me why the 40 km flashing lights have not been installed at this school. Mr G Barker.
Response from Nelson City Council: Police advise that the recent changes to the pedes-trian crossing at Auckland Point and the single-laning through that area have signifi-cantly improved safety and lowered speeds.Surveys and observations show that Auck-land Point School does not currently meet the criteria for a reduced speed zone, which includes high level of on-road school-related activity, the average speed of passing vehi-cles and the number of speed-related crashes outside the school in the past five years. If safety concerns persist then Active School warning signs could be considered in the fu-ture - these flashing active school signs raise the awareness and alertness to a higher lev-el, but do not lower the speed limit.

Osprey Boats began in the quintessential Kiwi way, with one man, Lloyd Elliott. His early in-volvement, passion and expertise in design and manufacture within New Zealand’s fishing boat industry led him to form Alloyd Engineering Limited. Lloyd began manufacturing specialist aluminium fishing boats almost twenty years ago and his products had to be perfect to meet the needs of his early customers in the mussel farming indus-try. The success of Lloyd’s business saw a New Zea-land range of boats un-veiled in 1996, which were immediately recognised for their excellence and safety. Osprey Boats have been purchased by a di-verse collection of groups including conservation departments, harbour boards, adventure tourism companies and the recreational market. Now, 21 years later, with the market changing so much, Lloyd is now selling Osprey Boats direct to the public. Meanwhile, one of the industry’s most experienced outboard technicians, Dennis Ellm-ers, has also gone out and started his new out-board servicing company, The Outboard Shop, on the Osprey Boats site on St. Vincent Street,
Nelson. After bumping into a couple of old school mates a few weeks ago and learning that neither of them knew anything about Osprey Boats, a plan was hatched to have an open day, not only to celebrate Osprey’s twenty-first year of production, but to spread awareness of the fact that Osprey Boats and The Outboard Shop
are right here in Nelson. Dennis is also acquiring an outboard agency and Lloyd is an OEM for an-other brand, so between them, you can source your new outboard at the same time you order your new Osprey boat, built to suit your requirements. The open day will also include the guys from Fluid3 Electronics who can demonstrate and sup-ply your GPS, radar, and fish finder on the day.
They can also install and teach you how to use all the features as part of their service. Kicking off at 9am on Saturday, February 21, there will be most models of Osprey on site, with a couple of very unique and special Osprey Boats for sale, along with a bbq, bouncy castle and some giveways. Choosing the right bank for your business can have a significant impact on its success. If you have ever owned a small business, you will know that selecting a bank is a time-consuming process. In addition to building the business and attracting and retaining customers, there is the added stress of organising a suitable financial structure. A small business owner may look to a bank or their Accountant to help.
All banks will advertise that they have a version of a ‘business banking expert’. The level of efficiency, experience and autonomy with these staff is largely dependent on the size of your business. Turnover and debt levels are key aspects in regard to the seniority of the business banking manager that will be assigned to look after your accounts. Your location will also be a factor as many banks do not have business banking staff located in smaller towns. If you are a small business, with no or minimal debt levels, it is unlikely you will have a close and active relationship with a ‘business banking expert’. If you are also located in a smaller town, the best you can often hope for is a phone discussion via a 0800 to someone you may never meet face to face.
Think about your experience with your current bank. Who do you talk to when you have a problem with your account? Is there a branch nearby where you can make deposits conveniently? Is the person ultimately responsible for making decisions on your loan located at the local branch? As your business grows, the convenience of dealing with these types of day-to-day account issues will play a big part in your satisfaction with your banking relationship.
An established, personal relationship with a bank will make it easier for you to manage finances. The business banking market is competitive, so if you aren’t getting the personal service from your existing bank, don’t be afraid to ask for something better, or shop around for a new ‘business banking expert’. You deserve the service, no matter how big or small your business is.
Do you have a “Business Banking Expert”?

FIRE PERMITS: The Waimea Rural Fire Author-ity has stopped issuing fire permits on the Waimea Plains after the dry weather has escalated the fire danger to high. Principal Rural Fire officer Ian Reade says the fire risk could increase to extreme “if we get two or three windy days” or if it did not rain for two or three weeks. Fire permits were still being issued to orchardists who need to burn dis-eased wood.
CYCLE TRAIL A FINALIST: Tasman’s Great Taste Trail is one of five finalists in the New Zea-land Transport Agency’s competition aimed at finding New Zealand’s Favourite Place to Cycle. It was a real country festival with plenty of music, sunshine, hay bales and farm animals at this year’s Dovedale Country Affair, held in the domain on Sunday.Headline act, The Gypsy Pick-ers, entertained the crowd while kids played nearby in the suds, slipping and sliding on the giant waterslide. There was plenty of locally grown pro-duce from around the valley with handcrafts and baking, plus a wide range of food to fill hungry bellies. Ann Winn, a member of the Dovedale Country Affair or-ganising committee, says they were very pleased with the number of people attending the event and stallholders were happy with sales. “There were a lot more people through the gate compared with last year and we had great success with selling raffle tick-ets and our PTA ran out of baking by 3pm. We were re-ally thrilled with the response,” says Ann.The big red machines looked
impressive with a line-up of vintage farm machinery and the church was packed with local history from wedding dresses through to World War I displays. Animals were the favourite of the day with alpacas, goats, horses and sheep on display as well as pony rides, sheep shear-ing, working dogs and duck herding drawing a large crowd. Lots of fun was had around the cricket pitch too with games
including gumboot throwing, sack races and the heavily con-tested tug of war. Funds were still being counted, however Ann estimates around $2000 was raised on the day with all proceeds going back into the Dovedale community. Money raised from last year’s event was distributed back into the community for things such as lights for the local play group and a new gazebo for shade around the pavilion.

Club Waimea will host the Clubs New Zealand 2015 conference and annual general meeting next month, a prestig-ious event that Clubs New Zealand dis-tributes carefully. It is the first time Club Waimea has hosted the event after it was transferred to their premises, but they are ready to look after the 280 delegates and other guests who will make up the conference party, says Club Waimea manager John Hewison. At the same time, Club Waimea will be
housing an expo on club related equip-ment from coffee machines to gaming machines which will be on display for people to view. The conference is the main event for the club industry nationally, offering a chance for club managers, presidents and boards of governance to come together and update their knowledge on the op-eration of club organisations. This includes speakers, workshops and discussion groups on a range of topics
such as performance, financial trends and li-censing conditions. Clubs New Zealand is the leading association for clubs in New Zea-land and is a not-for-profit organisation that represents more than 300 clubs around the country.
Clubs New Zealand is committed to pro-
moting and safe-guarding the interests, rights and privileges of its member clubs, of which, more than 270,000 people are a part. The event will run from Thursday, March 19, until Saturday, March 21 and during that time Club Waimea will be a hive of activity. The club’s hall will be closed off for the conference, however the rest of the club facilities will be open at all times for club members and visiting members.
The Club Waimea Snooker section will officially commence their 2015 season by contesting the Rex Plum Memorial Trophy on Sunday, Feb-ruary 22. This event holds a special place within the section as Rex was a most popular and enthusiastic member, as well as secretary from the time of the section’s inception in 1994 until his sudden death in 2011. The competition is played on a drawn pairs format, with points scored, both for and against, de-termining the overall winner. The next matter for resolution this year
will be the district interclub com-petition, involving Waimea, Subur-ban and Nelson City teams. Along with our own Club Champion-ships, held over several months for different events, and arrangements for hosting and visiting other clubs from near and far, the 2015 season looks to be heading for a busy time for local snooker adherents. The Club Waimea snooker section is always ready to welcome new, or returning, players to their num-bers. For more information contact either Shane Geddes on 544 2722 or Colin Bowden on 544 7819.

The NZ Sun City Country Music Awards are coming to Club Waimea and those who are fans of country music will be sure to head along for a chance to watch some of this country’s talented musicians perform over three days. The event starts on Friday with performances by the judges. Convener of the awards, Lin-da Hahn says it is a chance for the judges to prove their tal-ents before they begin judg-ing the contestants. Last year’s overall winner Gina Keating will also be performing on Friday as well as Sunday’s fi-nals. This year there are 56 musi-cians participating in the 27 sections, from tiny tots to the old time category. Nelson Pine Industries has been a major sponsor of the event for the last 20 years, al-though its origins begin with
the first convenor, Marga-ret Baigent. After moving up from Invercargill and missing her involvement in country music awards, Margaret cre-ated her own here in Nelson
which she organised for 10 years. The Nelson Country Music Club is now celebrating 30 years of hosting the event. Tickets to the Saturday and
Sunday auditions and finals can be purchased at the Rich-mond Mall information desk or the Club Waimea office, while the Friday showcase is free for everyone.

Indoor Bowls began for Club Waimea players on February 9. With Outdoor Bowls still being played numbers were lighter on the ground but are soon expected to grow as the
season warms up. Club nights for Indoor Bowls are held from 7:15pm every Monday and are open to anyone. The only requirement is to have flat sole shoes. Coming up on
the Indoor Bowls calendar is the Chartered Clubs of New Zealand South Island tourna-ment in April, a competition that will be hosted by Club Waimea too.
Last weekend the Club Waimea cards group earned themselves some successful results at the Nuggett Mc-Donald Cup in Blenheim. Club Waimea player Dawn Smith won the tournament followed by Pattie Criop in second place, also from
Waimea. At the end of February the card group will be compet-ing again in the South Is-land Euchre Tournament, held at the Suburban Club. If you’re interested in play-ing cards at the club contact Anne on 544 7267.
Sun City rockers had their first meet of the year on Tuesday, February 10. They will also be starting their beginner’s lessons on March 3. Everybody is welcome to come and have a look and partici-pate. If people are interested in learning to Rock’n’Roll they
can ring Marie Bone for fur-ther details. Lessons are $30 for six weeks. Lessons are ongoing moving through from beginner to in-termediate with some of their younger dancers being sup-ported in their bid to compete in the dance style.

The Nelson Vintage Car Club celebrat-ed their 50th anniversary last year and their next big public event is this Sat-urday’s swap meet. Originally a swap meet would include the buying, sell-ing and swapping of vintage car parts, but has now evolved into what could be called a super-sized garage sale. All sorts of items can turn up, from an-tiques, plants, art; nearly everything you can think of. “Sometimes there’s a bit of junk but even that can be anoth-er man’s treasure,” says organiser and Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Kevin Mercer. “Swap meets I’ve been involved with in the past have been for Winchester in South Canterbury and we got up to nearly 400 sites at its peak.
It was a great way of raising funds for the club and our aim now is to raise money to fund the alterations to our new clubrooms at the Nelson Speed-way Association track.” This is the first time the Nelson Vin-tage Car Club have hosted a swap meet of this size. As well as creating neces-sary funds for the organisation, it is a great platform for the public to sell items to a larger audience than they would normally get at a garage sale. The swap meet will be open from 8am on Lansdowne Rd, with the grounds needing to be cleared by 5pm, and will feature “just about anything you can imagine,” says Kevin. “I know for a fact on one of the sites there is going to be a
kitchen sink and some carpet. It can even be new, we see a lot of people who trade in tools, or some other product, end up with a bit of surplus stock that they bring along to sell.” The Nelson Vintage Car Club is far more than a monthly club meeting and with a few car rallies thrown in. Their 280 local members are passion-ate about the preservation of cars that are more than 30 years old, and the group is one of the authorities in New Zealand that have a consider-
able amount of power in assisting members with getting new restorations re-registered. “There are a lot of tough rules today that our cars can’t com-ply with for many reasons. For example, many of them don’t have seat belts, and that prevents them from being on our roads today,” says Kevin. “We also have a very strong representation to govern-ment to assist with laws around older cars, so we’re a pretty important body.” The Nelson Vintage Car Club is a branch of

a national organisation, although Nelson members were originally part of the Canterbury branch but with so much local interest it was decided to form a separate branch in 1964. The benefits of the Nelson Vintage Car Club are numerous for car enthusiasts, who not only enjoy monthly club meetings that can range from a visit to a car in the middle of be-ing restored to a night of ten pin bowling, but en-compasses a huge network of car owners available for advice and help. “I really enjoy the involvement with people,” says Kevin. “I’ve been a member of the vintage car club for 37 years and this is the third branch I’ve been chairman of. But what I’ve done over that time is build up a huge group of acquaint-ances, some of them are friends nationwide, so we can go motoring anywhere in New Zealand and, if we have a problem, there’s always somebody we can call. I would think now that more than 50 per
cent of my friends have come from the car club.” Nelson Vintage Car Club is always happy to wel-come new members, especially the younger gen-eration. Kevin says that it’s also important for the club to focus on fostering the earlier cars and pre-vent them from being exported from the country. Every year the cars eligible to be part of the Nelson Vintage Car Club grows and those interested in be-coming members are welcome to contact the club via email at [email protected] And, if you looking to pick up some bargains, don’t miss out on the Nelson Vintage Car Club Swap Meet on Saturday, February 21. A display of the club’s cars will also be there for people to check out.

Amateur astrology pho-tographer, Ralph Bradley is hoping that his new Wai-iti property will soon be registered as the only silver-rated dark sky reserve in the Top of The South.Having previously lived in Richmond, Ralph was finding it increasingly harder to see the stars due to light pollution, so he moved to Wai-iti where he could view a clear night sky.“When living in a sub-urban area, you get a
sky glow and you can only see around 20 to 30 bright stars, I was amazed that I could see the entire Milky Way and stars in detail at Wai-iti, so I decided to start the registration process,” says Ralph.Ralph is in preliminary discussions with the In-ternational Dark Sky Association (IDA) who administer the registra-tions and has submitted all information required. The proposed reserve would be located around

A group of local Wakefield residents are organising a 100th commemoration ANZAC service and pa-rade to be held in Wake-field on Anzac Day this year. Group spokesman, Fritz Buckendahl, is keen to hear from anyone who would like to play the bag-pipes at the event. They are also putting together a display and would like to know if you have any memorabilia relating to ANZAC or any of the wars that you could lend them. Your treasures will be held in care and displayed at the Fire Station. You can call Fritz on 541 9061 or 027 22 44 162 or email [email protected]

16km from Richmond and 30km from Nelson. His long term plan is to build three observatories on the prop-erty, two dedicated to astro-photography and another for visual use. “It would be an awesome asset for the whole community, be-ing so close to town. Mt John Observatory in the Aoraki Mackenzie is a gold-rated re-serve but it is a long way from any major centre and there is now a possibility to have an extensive dark sky reserve in the Top of The South. I would
like to have groups of visitors and school children come out and have a look through the telescopes at things they have never seen before, like the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the craters on the moon,” says Ralph.Part of the process requires public access and Ralph has been in opening discussions with the Tasman District Council about including Wai-iti Domain and eventually incorporating adjacent Tun-nicliffe Forest, making a total area of around 110 hectares.
He has yet to approach neigh-bours and over time will talk with them to see if the area could be extended even more.Ralph is also keen to set up a permanent telescope in the future that can be controlled from other parts of the world via the internet.“Some parts of the world have never seen the night sky and stars because of pollution, with this, someone from the USA for example, can sit down at their computer and book a slot to view the Southern Hemi-sphere live,” says Ralph.

Waimea Old Boys Division one players claimed their second rugby championship in a row in the Car Company division one final last year.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will enter the 2015 season as two-time defending champions having beaten Wanderers in two consecutive Car Company Nelson Bays Division One Champion-ship finals – but they’re not resting on their lau-rels, Waimea want a three-peat.After losing three players to Super 15 contacts and another to a leading French club, Waimea have done some good work in the off season, picking up several new players that will look to pick up where last year’s team left off.Right on the heels of the division one team will be the Superliquor Richmond division two team and the women’s team, who both made their re-spective finals last year but failed to bring the ti-tles back to Jubilee Park. The success of the division one winning side had huge rewards for its players with James Lowe (Chiefs), Marty Banks (Highlanders) and Billy Guyton (Crusaders) all picking up Super Rugby contracts for 2015. That trio, along with Tevita Cabuvati, Pete Samu and Jeff Lepa were also
members of the ITM Cup Premiership runners up Tasman Makos squad. While club president Duane Whiting says win-ning the club championship back to back was a huge achievement, the loss of Super 15 players makes this season an entirely new challenge. “We obviously want to back up where we were last year, and try to improve if possible. We have to perform and do the best we can,” he says. With Sam Prattley at the Blues, there are now four Waimea Old Boys players playing in a profes-sional environment, and Duane says those play-ers are always keen to come back and continue to contribute to the club. It also acts as a perfect pathway for the club and their aspiring juniors. This year the club has picked up former Junior Warrior Viliami Lolohea, Makos first five Rohan Saifolo and former Nelson first five and last year’s Heartland Championship player of the year, James Lash. Two new teams will also join the club this year. An under 14 team and an under 19 team will

play out of the club for the first time in years. The teams will be run by the club in conjunction with Waimea College. Duane says that’s an exciting development. “It’s at that under 14s age that kids are dropping out of the game so we’re hoping to keep them involved playing rugby.”
The upcoming senior season will begin on March 21 with a repeat of last year’s final against Wanderers, in Brightwater.Pre-season training has already be-gun at Jubilee Park but Duane says it’s not too late for players from any grade from under 14s up to come along and get involved in a team.

“We want people to come down and get in-volved, we’re in the full swing already but it’s not too late for people to come down on Mondays at 6pm.”And it’s not just the seniors tasting success. Waimea Old Boys boasts the largest JAB num-bers in the region with nearly 250 kids across 20 teams playing rugby for the club in 2014. JAB chairman Jeremy Salton is looking forward to another successful year with the club’s budding stars, and is encouraging new players to join on the two registration days on March 4 and 5 be-tween 6-8pm at the Jubilee Park clubrooms. The grades range from Under-6 through to intermediate which is basically an Under-13 grade. From there rugby players play for their secondary schools until returning to the club scene for senior rugby. Each junior grade has around “two to three teams”, Jeremy says, and those are often divvied up depending on which school the players go to. Waimea Old Boys is also looking for more jun-ior coaches ahead of the season which begins at start of May. “We’re a really strong community-minded club and we can offer the best facilities in the region so we welcome all families to come along and have a look at playing rugby this year.”

How do you look at life. During my summer holidays, I had the opportunity to see some of the beauty of the South Island as I travelled with some guests from China. One of the most beautiful sights in our travels was the Mirror Lakes, as you looked into the still pools the most beautiful reflection of the mountains, capped with a little snow to contrast the colours.Everyone spending time getting the best photo, then finding just along it was even more beauti-ful.As I looked through my camera at the reflec-tion, then above to the mountains I started to think, why am I trying to take a photo of the reflection. Although perfect and so beautiful, no one will believe that’s a reflection, so why don’t I just take a photo of the mountain. So back to the start this time being careful to take photos of both the mountain and its re-flection together in the same photo frame, and just so eve-ryone would believe it is a re-flection, I made sure there was a tree or two in same photo so the picture reflected the true image of beauty, and the perfect refection in the pools working as the best mirror.I couldn’t help consider the thought, when it comes to life what do we see, do we see beauty, do we see a reflection of how it is or even could be, or do we see some confusion not knowing which way is up or down.Life can be confusing, at times it can seem to go upside down but it is how you look life that shows the real picture. The bible says we are made in God’s image, and living in a country as beautiful as New Zealand, do our lives reflect God’s beauty and love. The bible explains God’s love for us, plain and simple. God’s love is everlasting, God’s love for us is so amazing He sent His only Son to bring us forgiveness and life. Check out John 3 : 16 in the bible. My life is wonderful, is yours?

About 100 cyclists detoured through Sun-dial Square in Richmond last Wednesday when they enjoyed a free breakfast, coffee and bike check as part of Go By Bike Day.The annual event, which was part of this year’s Konica Minolta Nelson Bikefest, was aimed at encouraging people to leave their cars in the garage and get on their bikes to commute to school or work.Bikers were rewarded for their efforts with a free breakfast served by Village Cycles Sue and Jessie Matthews and free coffee from the Coffee Shack. There was also a free bike check and give-aways organised by the Tasman District Council.

Nobody could accuse Aniseed Valley’s Marina Bennett of rush-ing into things after she com-pleted her first marathon at the age of 62.Marina finished second in her F55-64 age group in Saturday’s Buller Marathon after running 42.2km along the Buller Gorge to Westport in 4 hours 20 min-utes 23 seconds. It was an im-pressive marathon debut for the retired Waimea Intermediate School teacher who has been training for a marathon for al-most a year and thinking about doing one for even longer.“I only started running when I got into my 50s and did the Bull-er Half Marathon five years ago,” Marina says. “I really enjoyed it but it didn’t feel like it was long enough so I thought I’d have a go at a marathon.“But I didn’t do anything about it until I retired a year ago and had more time to training seri-ously. I also told someone I was going to a marathon so after that I had to walk the talk.”Marina’s son George, who is a professional road cyclist based in Europe, also encouraged her to keep training so she could
achieve her goal. “He kept saying to me ‘come on mum you can do it, keep train-ing’ and that helped.” Although Marina says she was “extremely nervous” travelling on the bus to the start with the other competitors, she soon re-laxed. “I was sitting on the bus surrounded by all these elite ath-
letes and I wondering what I’d got myself into. But then once we got out and were waiting around for the start everyone was really friendly and encour-aging especially when they knew it was my first marathon - it was such a lovely atmosphere.”Marina says the race went ac-cording to plan, thanks to a lengthy build-up that included some 30 kilometre-plus training runs. “I got sore legs but just ran through that. I just kept putting one leg in front of the other. At the business end of the race, Nelson runner Phil Costley added another win and another record to his name when he fin-ished in 2hr 28min 27sec to beat David Askin’s 1997 veteran’s marathon record by 49 seconds. Phil now holds the Buller half and full, open and veteran re-cords.Richmond’s Ian Courtenay was fourth in 2hr 55min 28sec. Mo-tueka’s Collette Read won the women’s marathon in 3hr 9min 37sec ahead of Appleby’s Carol Cooper who finished in 3hr 11min 10sec. Another Appleby runner, Paula Canning, finished second in the half marathon.Helping grow the country0800 475 455 www.agnz.co.nz

Q: I am pregnant and applying for parental leave. However, I am considering staying at home with my baby and not to returning to work. My partner and I are a bit scared to go down to one income. How can we prepare for this?
A: Use this time of earning two incomes to prepare:
Write up a budget of the new income and outgoings so you know what your costs will be.
Pay off high interest loans (credit card, loan company debt) while you can.
Set up a smooth-pay option for your power.Set up a savings account to save for a financial
buffer (enough to live for 2 months without income is ideal).
Set up small weekly automatic payments to services you may use regularly, such as your doctor, dentist and firewood supplier.
Prioritise spending on needs, rather than wants. Think of ways to earn extra money easily from
home.

It was all about communication for the Waimea College senior girls’ volleyball team as they stepped off court last Saturday for some team bonding at Nelson Fire Station. Station officer Craig Davies says the exercises they were faced with on the day, tested how well they could listen to instructions and carry them out in a foreign envi-ronment. The team spent the morning being blindfolded, soaked through with a decontamination shower and shut away in the dark of the fire station’s training tower. And, by the end, the team all agreed, it was definitely worth it. This is the third year the team has done the team building exercises at
the Nelson station, all in prepara-tion for when they head off to the New Zealand Volleyball nationals in Palmerston North next month. “Not many people get the opportu-nity to do this. It’s definitely differ-ent from any other team building activities.“It helps so much with communi-cation,” co-captain Holly Young says.Throughout their session at the station, the team was required to complete a plywood puz-zle in the dark, with blindfolds on, carry their captain and co-captain through a decontamina-tion shower and tunnel, and then practice some search and rescue techniques, blindfolded, as they recovered life-size dummies from the tower.

It’s almost time for kick off as football sea-son comes round again and Nelson Bays Football are happy to see that a large num-ber of players are signing up for an exciting 2015 season. The season starts on April 11, but there are plenty of things happening on the Nelson Bays Football calendar once things do get moving, says NBF’s general manager, Clive Beaumont. Nelson Bays Football facili-tate the sport in the region and developing youth is a big part of their job; the Nelson Marlborough Falcons being a pinnacle for youth players to strive for. Last sea-son the Falcons were winners of the ASB National Youth League . Their success has made the region proud and the first step on the pathway to being Falcons material is the federation talent centre which be-
gan in early February at the Avery Playing Field. The development centre was led by an exceptional cast of coaches with Mark Johnston, Andy Morris and Ben Wright taking proceedings, alongside George Campbell and Steve Clark. As the district branch of the Mainland Federation, Nelson Bays Football has a job to develop the tal-ented players in the re-gion and give them every opportunity to achieve within the game. “The idea of the talent centre is
to bring together the best coaches with the best players, allowing those committed to learning the technical skills of the game to be-come the best they can be, wheth-er that is playing in the national league, the ASB Youth League or Mainland Premier League sides, or even age group national sides,” says Clive.Football is the biggest participation sport in the region, with thousands
of players from the age of four to a select few still playing in their 60s, enjoying the game each day and every week from April through to the end of the season in Sep-tember. “There is a buzz in Nelson about football and we encourage anyone to come and be a part of it,” says Clive. “At Nelson Bays Football, we try to create games and competition and opportunities for all lev-els of the game so that players fall in love
with football, like I did many years ago, and it becomes their recreation of choice for life.” At senior level, the Nelson Suburbs Mainland side is the top club team playing in the Federation Premier League alongside seven other clubs from Christchurch. Locally, eight teams will contest the first division, along with three other senior grades for men and two for women which are played on Saturdays. Lo-cal clubs playing include FC Nelson, Nelson Suburbs, Richmond Athletic, Tahu-nanui FC, Wakefield, Waimea Plains, Mapua, Upper Mou-tere, Motueka and Golden Bay, as well as Nelson Col-lege, Nelson College for Girls, Waimea College, Garin Col-
lege and Nayland College. “It’s a great year to be involved in Football, there’s plenty of exciting things happening with the under 20 FIFA World Cup being held in New Zealand – the closest games to us being in Christchurch - so we’re go-ing to make sure people playing in Nelson enjoy it as much as anywhere,” says Clive. A special project this year is Nelson Bays Football hosting the Glasgow Rangers FC

Football Academy, to be held from April 13 un-til April 17. The professional football club will be providing a group of outstanding coaches, quali-fied to the highest standard (one having played in the World Cup in 1994), who train and develop youth players in Scotland to attain professional contracts. The camp will offer valuable experi-ence to players aged 8 to 18 with registrations into the training camp available through the Nelson abys website www.nelsonbays-football.co.nz. Another highlight on the NBF calendar will be when they again host the National Second-ary School’s Premier Boys tournament, held from August 31 until September 4, featuring the top 32 secondary school teams in the country. Nelson Bays Football says there is one key mes-sage they’d like to get across before the start of the
season: “Join a club and enjoy the beauti-ful game.”
The AGM for Nel-son Bays Football will be held at the Sports House, Saxton Field, on 25th March 2015 at 7pm.

Draft Tasman District Council Wastewater Bylaw 2015The previous bylaw has expired and the Council has to replace it.A focus of the bylaw is the discharge of trade waste into the wastewater system. Trade waste is any liquid that is not domestic in nature and will typically come from commercial or industrial activities. Trade waste controls are necessary to avoid operational and treatment problems within the wastewater system, public health and safety, and effects on the environment. The bylaw softens a 2005 definition of trade waste in a previous bylaw. Businesses or community facilities that only have conveniences such as toilets, kitchenettes, and/or staff rooms are not now considered trade waste. Many trade waste activities are now ‘permitted activities’ and simply need to register their activity with Council. Trade waste activities that are likely to have an adverse affect will need a trade waste permit. The bylaw also addresses issues such as inappropriate inflow or infiltration, overloading, blockages and working close to the wastewater system.A statement of proposal is available for viewing on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz and at all Council offices, Service Centres, and Libraries during normal opening hours. An open forum to explain the intention of the proposed bylaw and answer any questions or concerns will be held on Thursday 12 February 2015 at 5.00 pm in the Council Chamber, Richmond. This draft bylaw is available for you to have your say – consultation closes at 4.30 pm, 20 February 2015.If you have any questions regarding the bylaw or the consultation process, please contact Daryl Page on, Ph. 03 5437264 or Email: [email protected]
