How does science apply to basketball?
SCIENCE CAN APPLY TO BASKETBALL BECAUSE YOU USE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:
MOTIONSPEEDFORCEWEIGHT AND MASS
![Page 3: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Motion: How does motion apply to
basketball?
![Page 4: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
HowWhen someone is
dribbling the ball or shooting the ball if you have ever noticed the ball changes position over time. The definition of motion is when an object changes position over time. When a ball is being dribbled the ball is rotating and moving with the person that is dribbling it. When a ball is shot it rotates in the air and ether goes up or down and that is motion.
![Page 5: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Speed: What does speed have
to do with science?
![Page 6: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
How it applies!
Speed applies to basketball because the ball can be dribbled at different speeds and thrown at different speeds. When a player throws a free throw or passes the ball or even makes a lay up, the ball is thrown at different speeds. When a player is passing the ball they can control the speed at witch it is going to be thrown. The same concept applies when someone is taking a shot. The player controls the speed that it is being thrown at. That is how speed applies.

Force: Doe’s force really apply?
![Page 8: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Yes:It plays a big roll in basketball!
If force plays a big roll in basketball then how doe’s it apply? Doe’s it apply when you are dribbling? Doe’s it apply when you are shooting? Doe’s it apply when you are running? Or doe’s it apply when you are making a layup? What do you think is the right answer?
![Page 9: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The answer is:
When you use your
hand to dribble the
ball you push down
on it with your hand
and that is force.
When a person is
dribbling the ball
they are pushing
down on it and that
is force being
applied to the ball.

Gravity: Does gravity have anything to
do with science?
![Page 11: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
What do you think?
No, I do not think
gravity applies to
basketball.
Yes, I think gravity
applies and I can
explain why.
I do not know
what is the right
answer.

Gravity: Gravity has a big role in
basketball. When someone is shooting the ball the only way it is able to go in the net is because of gravity. Gravity pushes down on the ball and forces it to go down. Also when someone is dribbling the ball, gravity is pushing down on the ball and that is what makes it go down. If there was not gravity then the ball would not bounce down or it would not go in the net.

MassDoe’s mass apply?
If so why?
![Page 16: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Yes, mass is very
important to basketball!
![Page 17: W h o k n e w s c i e n c e w a s i n b a s k e t b a l l ?](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062521/568166f0550346895ddb4eac/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Mass:Mass surprisingly applies
because in basketball you
play with the most important
thing a basketball! A
basketball as mass because
it has matter. Mass is the
amount of matter in an
object. A basketball has
mass because it is blown up
with air. When you dribble or
shoot a basketball the only
reason it bounces or is easy
to throw is because of mass.
